In this week of Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings, Fitz is handed the responsibility for a new Queen's Guard and with the mounting frustration of so many relationships pulling him in different directions, it's only a matter of time before he snaps. Pining after Molly and stressing over cheering Kettricken up, he is beset upon by the Fool. We learn the future and get some foreshadowing in a ballad, leaving Fitz embarrassed and frustrated, of course. Zen Kettricken somewhat calms FitzChivalry down until he learns she can use the Wit and others might be able to discover his secret.

In this potpourri solo episode I hit on several issues. First, is it fair to draw conclusions about Bernie Sanders and his campaign on the basis of violent, pro-gulag remarks from one of his field coordinators (as recorded by Project Veritas)? Then I review a recent episode on Twitter in which libertarianism was attacked, and one libertarian group responded in the most self-defeating and grotesque way. Finally, I revisit the controversy over "deplatforming," and respond to libertarians who think they should cheer ("it's a great free-market outcome!") when dissident voices are silenced.

We've been spending lots of time in the 70s, it seems, almost to the point of pricing shag carpeting. Oddly, Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak, their undisputed US breakthrough record and the peak of their notoriety, takes me back...to 2009, when 'Jailbreak' became my antidote to (or respite from) the endless cycle of Michael Jackson tracks on jukeboxes immediately following his passing. "Jailbreak" (the song) always seem to cleanse the palate of the room, if only for the moment, then, and it's perhaps at least a little ironic that Thin Lizzy also featured a shooting star frontman (an unfortunate double entendre) -- Phil Lynott, himself gone too soon. There are some chunks of the Lizzy catalog that are certainly less memorable, and who could blame modern day listeners who have been oversaturated by the prominence of the tracks they know too well. What we cannot hear with fresh ears, might we still appreciate for its immediacy? Only one way to find out. Plan your own Jailbreak on Amazon A Few Minutes With Ryan pays tribute to Chris Cornell AND relives the first time he saw [**Soundgarden**'s video for *Jesus Christ Pose*][2]. In 1896 two New Jersey clam diggers made a bold bid for fame: They set out to cross the North Atlantic in a rowboat, a feat that had never been accomplished before. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow the adventure of George Harbo and Frank Samuelsen, which one newspaper called "the most remarkable event in the way of ocean navigation that ever transpired." Would you be more inclined to listen to this week’s edition of Monday Morning Radio if you knew that one lucky listener would win a Silver Aluminum Apple Watch? Perhaps. But this week’s guest, Susan Fowler, thinks such prize incentives are an awful way to win customers or to encourage employees to perform better on the job. In the long run, they don’t work. Susan, who has worked alongside management guru Ken Blanchard for more than two decades and co-authored three books with Ken, is an expert on the science of motivation. Her own book, Why Motivating People Doesn’t Work…and What Does, explodes the conventional wisdom that to motivate others – or even yourself – you have two choices, the carrot or the stick. That may work for horses, Susan says, but not for listeners of this podcast or for any other sentient human being. Susan is interviewed by Wizard Academy faculty member Dean Rotbart, co-host of Business Unconventional, the one-hour radio newsmagazine that aired weekly on News/Talk 710 KNUS AM in Denver. If you're looking for the one perfect portable computing device that suits every need, my recommendation is to forget about it. The problem with trying to use a computer to find a Wi-Fi hotspot is that you need to be connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot to use an online service to find Wi-Fi hotspots. In Short Circuits: Some investors are suing Microsoft as the company readys Windows 8.1 for release in October. Cisco's profits are up, so the CEO has announced that now is a good time to fire 4000 people. And the New York Times website was offline for several hours on Wednesday and the smoking gun seems to be located at 620 Eighth Avenue in Manhattan.
