In Welsh history, the period that lies between the medieval era of resistance to English occupation, and the rapid industrialisation of the 18th and 19th centuries, is often forgotten. Yet, there was much more going on in Wales in the early modern period than might initially meet the eye. Speaking with Elinor Evans, Lloyd Bowen describes the ambiguities in Welsh identity and nationhood that arose in the decades following the Acts of Union in the early 16th century, including the impact of the Reformation on the Welsh language, and Wales's changing relationship with the monarchy. We are taking a look at seemingly forgotten era of ska between the third wave boom and present day. Many a fine band got their starts or released some of the best music of the careers in this period. This episode is far more of the former, than the latter but all top notch. Highlighting some of my personal favorites of the time. Featuring the music of The Liptones, Open Season, Babylove & the Van Dangos, Green Room Rockers, Buster Shuffle, Abraskadabra, T-Bone, Beatdown, and Mr. T-Bone.
In this episode, I talk to Prof. Abbas Vali on his upcoming book, The Forgotten Years of Kurdish Nationalism in Iran. This book investigates the forgotten years of Kurdish nationalism in Iran, from the fall of the Kurdish republic in 1947 to the advent of the Iranian revolution in 1979. It sheds light not only on the historical specificity of the phenomenon of nationalism in exile, but also on the political processes and practices defining the development of Kurdish nationalism in the post-revolutionary era. For many reasons, as we discuss that in detail in the interview, little is known about the three decades of Kurdish nationalism in exile between these two events. And this is another reason that makes this book groundbreaking. This book will be published by Palgrave Macmillan, part of Minorities in West Asia and North Africa book series that is edited by Kamran Matin and Paolo Maggiolini. Abbas Vali is former chair of modern social and political thought at the department of sociology at Boğazici University in Istanbul, Turkey. He is the author and editor of a number of books and articles on Kurdish nationalism and identity and political history of Iran. You can find some of his writings on his page on academia at: boun.academia.edu/AbbasVali
In his sweeping 1996 Cato book, Oil, Gas and Government: The U.S. Experience, Rob Bradley described a century of political capitalism in the energy industry. In recent years, leading energy entrepreneurs such as Ken Lay (Enron), John Browne (BP), Jeffrey Immelt (GE) and, most recently, Elon Musk (Tesla) continue the clammy pursuit of wealth via government subsidies and regulations, often perfumed with trendy environmentalism. Now, in Enron Ascending: The Forgotten Years (1984–1996), Bradley identifies a broader context for political capitalism—“contra-capitalism,” a repeating syndrome that links rent-seeking with corporate deceit and personal violation of bourgeois virtues. From this new perspective, Bradley rebuts both the charge that corporate scandals reflect badly on capitalism and the apologia that they are merely committed by capitalism’s “bad apples.” As an alternative, Bradley lays out a well-developed mirror image of contra-capitalism—a suite of behaviors consistent with classical-liberal teachings for business management.
