1984 studio album by Metallica
POPULARITY
Originally founded by current members Singer and Rhythm Guitarist James Hetfiled and Drummer Lars Ulrich, alongside Bassist Ron McGovney and Lead Guitarist Dave Mustaine, Metallica actually parted ways with both McGovney and Mustaine due to various personal and professional conflicts before recording and releasing their 1983 debut album, controversially titled ‘Kill ‘Em All’. McGovney was quickly replaced by revered Bassist, the now-late Cliff Burton, while Mustaine was replaced by legendary member-to-this-day, solo-master Kirk Hammett. Still an incredibly rough-around-the-edges Thrash Metal band, Cliff Burton would have a massive influence on the maturing of Metallica for their second album, Ride The Lightning. Metallica would follow Ride The Lightning up with 1986’s Master of Puppets No longer just making music for the underground metalheads of the world, ‘Puppets’ marked Metallica’s Major Label debut with Elektra Records. The album was roundly received as one of - if not the greatest metal album of the time, with critics noting how much Burton’s influence in particular had progressed the band’s sound. Tragedy would strike Metallica in September of 1986 - mere months after MOP’s release, as Cliff Burton would die in a bus accident in Sweden, while on tour promoting the record. By 1987, Metallica would find their necessary replacement for Burton - Bassist Jason Newsted. With Newsted in the band - Metallica geared up to release their final album of the 80s, called …And Justice For All. Tragedy would strike Metallica in September of 1986 - mere months after MOP’s release, as Cliff Burton would die in a bus accident in Sweden, while on tour promoting the record. Burton was only 24 years old when he was ejected from the window of Metallica’s tour bus as it skidded off the road suddenly, while the band members slept. The bus would land on top of him, killing him instantly. While the fault of the crash was hotly (and legally) debated at the time, ultimately Metallica’s tour bus driver was found not to be at fault for the freak accident. By 1987, Metallica would find their necessary replacement for Burton - Bassist Jason Newsted. Years later, Newsted would tell VH1’s That Metal Show that he secured the gig by stealthily finding a Metallica setlist, learning all the songs on it to note perfection, and demo-ing them out for Ulrich, who hired him two days later. YOUTUBE CLIP VH1 1 With Newsted in the band - Metallica geared up to release their final album of the 80s, called …And Justice For All. By this point, Metallica had very much made a name for themselves as the premiere Metal band, and Justice would prove it; peaking at number 6 on the Billboard album charts, going double platinum across its album cycle. Mainstream critical success would also soon follow for the band; although they would lose out on winning the first (and only) ever Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental GRAMMY Award to very-much-not-a-metal-band Jethro Tull’s very-much-not-a-metal album Crest of a Knave in 1989, Metallica’s song One would snag them the inaugural Best Metal Performance award in retribution at the following year’s ceremony. Eventually - …And Justice For All would follow in the footsteps of its pivotal predecessor, going more than 8x platinum to date. Now, you may be thinking by this point that this is truly unprecedented success for a metal band. Of course, there’s always a place in music for aggressive, heavy tunes, but as the 80s turned to the 90s - you would be forgiven for assuming that the roughly 4 to 5 million records sold in America across 4 monster albums, was about as good as it could get for any metal band, and perhaps they’d finally hit their glass ceiling. But Metallica, simply put - were not just any metal band, and were ready to change the way the world perceived heavy metal forever. For the first time ever, the band understood that they didn’t know everything there was about not only composing music - but producing it, and they were going to need someone to help guide them through the process, if they were going to do it right. So what did they do, you ask? Call in a Canadian, Naturally. This is the story of Metallica's Epic -' Nothing Else Matters' with newly unearthed footage from the band themselves - including interviews live from the studio while recording the iconic Metallica (Black Album).
You gotta hear this! Guests on The Greatest Mixtape Podcast have to play the "Ride the Lightning Round" - where they are forced to choose between some of their favorite artists. It's difficult. It's painful. But it has to be done. In this clip from Episode #12, our friend Paul is in the hot seat and has to make some tough choices that not everybody will agree with.
Mike's ongoing quest to make Discord & Rhyme more metal inevitably meant we would have to tackle the band so synonymous with metal they put it in their name, and Metallica's incredible mid-80s prime inevitably meant we would need to tackle two of their albums in the same episode. Ride the Lightning of 1984 and Master of Puppets of 1986 are largely the same album in terms of overall flow, but the differences are every bit as important as the similarities, and the best material from these albums ranks among the best rock music (not just metal) ever created. Join with Mike, Phil, and John as they make the case for why Metallica, despite a career with its fair share of ups and downs (and baffling documentaries), should be remembered as one of the greatest bands of its time.Cohosts: Mike DeFabio, Phil Maddox, John McFerrinComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/150-metallica-ride-the-lightning-1984-and-master-of-puppets-1986Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

In the summer of 1984, Metallica were not yet the Metal Gods and household names they are now. They were a band with one record under their belt (Kill Em All, hear UAWIL #138 for our review with The Hook Rocks Jay Scott), some experience playing bigger stages as an opening act and a small but loyal following. However, their US record company didn't have the money to pay for a new album so James, Kirk, Cliff and Lars traveled to Copenhagen and crashed in the studio as producer Fleming Rasmussen helped them pull together what would become their 2nd album, Ride The Lightning. As the album turns 40, we reminisce about how we came to know this metal classic, relive hearing them play (most) of the album live and debate if this is indeed ther best ever (Master Of Puppets is neck and neck according to us). We can really hear the progress on Ride The Lightning vs. the 1st album as the songs are tight with more complexity yet more melodic. And while the lyrics are very intelligent and clear, they deal with very heavy topics like nuclear war (Fight Fire With Fire), suicide (Fade To Black), ancient plagues (Creeping Death) and the horrors of war (For Whom The Bell Tolls). Cliff Burton's psychedelic wah-wah bass is not only unique but a driver of the melody that is inherent in these thrash classics. James Hetfield's powerful riffs are among the best he's ever recorded and provides that steady crunch against which Kirk Hammett can lay everything from frantic solos to trippy fills. This album remains #1 in the heart one of your hosts from the Metallica catalog - the other is on the fence. It's hard to believe Ride The Lightning turns 40 on July 27, 2024 but we love this one and had fun going track by track. Before burning down Lightning, Clint and Kevin talk about the metal scene in the early 80's, the almost insane competitive tenacity of youth and how that's essential for success, the Scorpions, Lars' drumming, the massive artistic leap from KEA to RTL and which Boston accent was the worst in Martin Scorsese's The Departed. Jagbags welcomes Val Kyriakopoulos back to the podcast for an ESSENTIAL DISCUSSION of all things heavy metal. We talk our favorite heavy metal bands and albums, and present our curated 45-minute Table Busting Playlists. We also talk about what got us into heavy metal initially, and how the music has changed over the years. We also talk speed metal, thrash, doom metal (riffs), and jazz metal (to Len's chagrin). Get ready to turn it up ear-bleeding levels and prepare your 2X4 to smash everything in sight!
“Sure, God's all-powerful, but does he have lips? Whoa…” It was the early 90's, and the landscape of metal was undergoing a transformation. Hair metal was effectively dead and gone, the popularity of thrash was rapidly approaching its zenith, and ALICE IN CHAINS were well on their way to becoming one of the most recognized bands in the world, thanks (in no small part) to their slot supporting The Clash of the Titans Tour, opening for 75% (or ¾ if you prefer fractions) of The Big Four as perhaps the most obscure, unknown, and “out of place” band on a bill packed with the biggest names in thrash. While ALICE IN CHAINS brought their own unique brand of metal to a brand-new (and oftentimes “highly resistant”) audience as the “odd ducks” relative to their legendary thrash counterparts, AIC's “baptism by fire” granted them the opportunity to prove their mettle while winning over new legions of metal fans and helping pave the way for the next evolutionary wave of metal which would soon be rising to prominence. Get ready to learn the answer to “Where?” and prepare to get “sucked in” as we unveil the actual reason why glam bands wore make-up and remember why “It's gotta be clean and it's gotta be huge” if you “won't be taking baths this year” whenever you JOIN US for some “third eye gravy” as we go INSIDE THE METAL of a band sharing more in common with Slayer than you'd think and journey to the rainy, perpetually moist, Pacific Northwest (where one might “hunt for some Squatch”) with Seattle's native sons, ALICE IN CHAINS. We had the pleasure of interviewing Warren Zeiders over Zoom video!Rising country star Warren Zeiders recently received the RIAA platinum certification for his standout single, “Ride The Lightning”.As his debut single with Warner Records in 2021, “Ride The Lightning” catapulted Warren into one of the genre's fastest-rising success stories in recent history. Released as part of his critically acclaimed 717 Tapes, the song was only the second Zeiders had ever written, leading PEOPLE Magazine to proclaim him as a “‘Wild Horse' who sings about the truth.”Zeiders – who has since garnered 894 million audio streams globally and 1.4 billion views on TikTok – recently released his Warner Records debut LP, Pretty Little Poison. The collection includes the powerful title track and the poignant Lee Miller and Chris Stapleton-penned breakup ballad “Inside Your Head”. He also extended his Pretty Little Poison headlining tour following his sold-out Spring run, which will kick off in September and include Warren's first headlining show at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on October 4th, 2023.We want to hear from you! Few bands have managed to endure four decades of shifting trends and breakneck performances in the way that Metallica has. Even fewer have solidified their legacy while at the height of their career. They're still selling out stadium double-headers while seeping into the consciousness of Gen Z via Stranger Things and TikTok virality, connecting their past to their future. Forty years after their debut album Kill 'Em All and the sophomore success of Ride The Lightning, even Kirk Hammett seems overwhelmed by the magnitude of it all...
