Spur Of The Moment has, over the past two decades, bucked the odds, transcended the usual ups and downs, and inspired thousands of fans across the world with a vibe that continues to define the word band. The list of artists that have worked with this immensely talented unit grows yearly. Their resume reads like a "who's who" of the R&B and Jazz worlds. From the legendary George Duke to Al Jarreau, Patti Austin, Ledisi, Raheem Devaughn, and Lalah HathawayOnce you experience the magic of the popular ensemble in action, or groove along to Spur of the Moment's exciting 2014 CD “ N 2 Deep”, you will quickly wonder why this group hasn't attained Superstardom; then you will become a fan. “N 2 Deep” features emerging artist, “Grammy” nominated Maimouna Youssef, and incredible singer/songwriter Levi Stephens, as well as an appearance by their friend, "Grammy" nominated Maysa.Outside of Maysa, they have developed a loyal following and some famous fans as well, including Will Downing, Eric Roberson, Ledisi, Lalah Hathaway, Brian Culbertson, and Raheem Devaughn. In addition, this Jazz, Funk, and Soul group, in the past seven years, have become the “House Band” of “The Capital Jazz Supercruise”, performing with everyone from Stanley Clarke and George Duke to Oleta Adams, and Ledisi. There are still so many people in America and around the world who have never seen us perform or heard us. There's also something cool about being the underdog because there's always something exciting still to accomplish. Every career has its ebbs and flows, and we're fortunate to still be around, doing what we love to do – making people happy with our music!”

Mumu Fresh - "A Healing," a 2021 self-released single. Maimouna Youssef (aka Mumu Fresh) is a GRAMMY-Nominated singer, songwriter, and activist, who mines her rich heritage for inspiration. Wikipedia does a nice job defining, "Misogynoir," so I will borrow it here. "Misogynoir is misogyny directed towards black women where race and gender both play roles in bias. The term was coined by queer black feminist Moya Bailey, who created the term to address misogyny directed toward black women in American visual and popular culture. Trudy of Gradient Lair, a womanist blog about black women and art, media, social media, socio-politics and culture, has also been credited in developing the lexical definition of the term. The concept is grounded in the theory of intersectionality, which analyzes how various social identities such as race, gender, class, and sexual orientation interrelate in systems of oppression." Today, we talk about misogynoir from the perspective of a cis white het man's desire to learn and share. Additionally, there is music. Always music. The soundtrack includes Big Freedia, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifa, Leikeli47, Maimouna Youssef, and Jamila Woods. I love all of the Black women who have loved and supported me throughout my life, starting with my step-Mom, Angie, and continuing through the myriad colleagues, friends, and educators with whom I currently work and interact. Love yinz. G
Today’s podcast is co-hosted by musician, community organizer and KEXP DJ, Gabriel Teodros. It celebrates the music of Black artists, some of whom are on the frontlines of the protests against police brutality, calling for long overdue systemic change. We hear from Minneapolis musician, Nikki Jean, who’s been volunteering as a medic during the Minneapolis protests. She recounts seeing police fire rubber bullets and more into medic tents. Teodros then shares some songs that reflect on systemic racism and the police killings of black folks. Songs discussed: “Hands Up” by Nikki Jean “Greeny Jungle feat. Shakiah” by Gabriel Teodros & SoulChef “Let Go” by D Smoke & SiR “Say My Name” by Maimouna Youssef & DJ Dummy “A Tree Never Grown” by Mos Def Support the show.

Daniel March is an exciting new face taking his place amongst the independent soul music movement with his debut self titled album. Released October 17 in Japan via a deal with acclaimed label P-Vine and in Korea through Leaplay Records (Angus & Julia Stone, Brian McKnight) the 10 track long player showcases a rich blend of soulful sounds that is both lyrically refreshing and musically appealing. The first single ‘Magic' from his latest release is a breezy, intoxicating slice of pop-soul produced by Daniel and Simon Cohen (Justin Bieber, Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy) that will be accompanied by an animated video by Isaiah FiftyFour Design in London. Splitting his time between London and Sydney, the well-respected multi-instrumentalist has been honing his craft working with the likes of Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, and MC, Maimouna Youssef aka Mumu Fresh (The Roots, Common), Chantae Cann (best known for her work with Grammy Winners Snarky Puppy and Foreign Exchange), Jordan Rakei, Wallace, Thandi Phoenix, Young Gun Silver Fox's Andy Platts and rising UK star Tiana Major 9 to name but a few. Influenced equally by the likes of Prince and Van Hunt as he is the soulful acoustic work of Ben Harper and John Mayer, Daniel's organic early recordings took place in Atlanta, Georgia USA alongside the likes of Khari Cabral Simmons (Donnie, India Arie), acclaimed songstress Julie Dexter and Bugz In The Attic's Daz-I-Kue but it was his 2015 single ‘Nina' that saw him mentioned as one to watch in soul circles. In December 2017 Daniel followed up ‘Nina' with the single 'Falling For You' and a remix by Ashley Beedle through Ramrock records. ‘Falling For You' landed Daniel substantial airplay on UK radio such as Mi Soul, Solar, Jazz FM and BBC. WITH THE HOT NEW SINGLE ' I GOT A MAN " “The Blooming” is the title track that opens up Maimouna Youssef's first solo full-length CD since she came upon the mainstream scene in the early new millennium as a vocalist featured on The Roots' GRAMMY-nominated song “Don't Feel Right”, and a lively performance artis...t sharing the stage with a bevy of artists ranging from Angelique Kidjo and Nas to Martin Luther and Mos Def. The eclectic and out-of-the-box Youssef presents her title track as the CD's kick-off, bursting through the speakers with a revolutionary fire as she becomes Mumu Fresh, her MC alter-ego who unabashedly steals the mic from her softer chanteuse side to break rhymes inspired by an unapologetic childhood in Baltimore's concrete jungle coupled with an enchanting spiritual foundation borne from a close relationship with her spiritual guides and supportive elders. Youssef breaks conformity with a rap song that is neither conventional nor predictable, wearing lyrics that are both transcendental and contemporary in their message. Delivering said lyrics as fiercely and uncompromisingly as a young Lauryn Hill on the now classic Miseducation CD, Youssef become's Hill worthy successor. Zap Mama bequeaths the crown to Youssef at the song's end in a fleeting voice-over alerting you that this track is only the appetizer.Maimouna “Mumu Fresh” Youssef is a Grammy nominated seasoned singer, emcee, songwriter and poet. She received a Grammy nomination for her contribution on the Roots hit “Don't Feel Right” in 2007 for best rap song. She has swapped musical licks with such artists as Angelique Kidjo, Brian Wilson's band, Big Daddy Kane, Nas, Dead Prez, Wilco, Zap Mama, Cody Chestnut, Martin Luther, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli.

She has swapped musical licks with Angelique Kidjo, Brian Wilson's band, Big Daddy Kane, Nas, Dead Prez, Wilco, Zap Mama, Cody Chestnut, Martin Luther, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli. Maimouna has also rocked the stages of venues such as Denver Colorado ‘s Red Rocks Amphitheater, Radio City Music Hall, Switzerland's Moniteau Jazz Festival, and The Carter Baron Amphitheater in Washington, DC. Her musical endeavors were a springboard to make her big screen debut in Dave Chapelle's “Block Party.” Mumu released her first Solo EP entitled Black Magic Woman March 2011. A Baltimore native born into a family of exceptional artists, Mumu began performing traditional African and Native American songs on stage with her family at the age of 5. As a youth she joined the Baltimore/Washington based musical theater group called Uprising and toured with them as a lead vocalist. In addition, she played a leading role in the Bway musical “Once on this Island”. Some of her other theatrical experiences include the original trio showcase “Three Generationz” that consisted of Maimouna Youssef, her mother, Nataska Hummingbird, and her grandmother, Mountain Eagle Woman (now deceased). At 16 Mumu formed a jazz/hip-hop/funk/ band with her cousin Omari “AzIz” Forman-Bey known as Cirius B. Maimouna Youssef won the title of “Baltimore's Idol.” Cirius B's unique sound found it's way to producer James Poyser. The Roots recognized Maimouna's raw talent and asked her to sing lead vocals. Shortly thereafter, Maimouna was packing her bags to join the Roots world tour.
