Midnight Oil, one of Australia's quintessential bands, is probably best known for its tireless political activism as expressed through hits like "Beds Are Burning" and "Blue Sky Mine," as well as the on-stage acrobatics of their 6′4″ frontman, Peter Garrett. But behind the sloganeering and agitprop, the Oils are a fiendishly creative and charmingly oddball band, and their 1982 Australian breakout album 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, recorded at a make-or-break moment for the group, was when they first really landed on their unmistakable aura. "Blue Sky Mining" von Midnight Oil erschien im Jahr 1990. Die australische Alternative-Rockband schaffte es mit der Platte erneut, mit Protestsongs die Leute zum Tanzen zu bringen. Mit "Blue Sky Mining" haben sie eine Antwort auf diese Frage gefunden und sich künstlerisch weiterentwickelt. Das Album wird erneut ein internationaler Erfolg und von der australischen Musikindustrie gefeiert. Unter anderem erhält es die Auszeichnung als Australiens Album des Jahres 1990. Midnight Oil sind dafür bekannt, komplexe politische und gesellschaftliche Themen in ihrer Musik zu verarbeiten. Auch "Blue Sky Mining" ist ein eindringlicher Protest – jedoch ohne erhobenen Zeigefinger. Dabei bleiben sie stets das, was sie immer waren: eine ehrliche Rockband. We're going extra-deep this week with alternative rock group The Coolies. The name comes from a derogatory term for 19th century Chinese immigrants who had to work hard for little pay. The Atlanta based group was only around for about three years and produced two albums. The first called "dig..?" was largely a collection of Simon and Garfunkel covers. Their second album, Doug, is a rock opera with an odd premise.Doug follows the rise and fall of a skinhead named Doug. He kills a transvestite who happens to be a cook, and becomes rich by using the stolen recipe book. The money is spent in riotous living, and in the end Doug ends up right where he began.The Coolies vocalist and front man was Clay Harper. Other band members included Jeb Baldwin, Rob Gal, Teddy Murray, and for this album had Frogg Jaguar Mellonball (most interesting artist name) on percussion. He replaced Billy Burton, who was percussionist for the first album but was unavailable for “Doug” due to his commitments to The Swimming Pool Q's, another locally well known alternative band.Harper would go on to be the owner of Fellini's Pizza and La Fonda Latina restaurants in Atlanta. It is not believed that the events from the Rock Opera are in any way connected to Harper's future culinary success.Wayne takes us on this deep cut journey to explore one of his favorite albums. Ice Cold SoulThe lead track introduces Doug, the main character of the rock opera. He is a skin head with the Pledge of Allegiance tattooed on the side of his head. He hangs out with his fellow skin heads stealing from people, beating them up, and generally being intimidating. “Schlitz Malt Liquor is my favorite food and pissed off is my favorite mood.”Pussy CookThe transvestite cook is warned not to walk where the “skin heads chill,” but failed to heed the warning. After beating up and killing the cook, Doug and his gang “open up the purse to get a good look. Got the money and the dope and the recipe book.” There are a lot of similarities between this song and “Cooky Puss” by the Beastie Boys, which this song spoofs.40 Foot StretchThis track continues the tale with Doug living large in the back of a stretch limousine. We're beginning to question whether that recipe book was referencing food...or something else! This song has a sound reminiscent of Miami Vice.Crack Pipe BurningIt is becoming obvious that things are not going to end happily ever after with Doug. The reference at the end of the song to “I got blisters on my fingers” hearkens back to a statement Ringo Starr makes at the end of the Beatles song “Helter Skelter.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Do You Love Me by the Contours (from the motion picture “Dirty Dancing”)This 1962 single made a resurgence after appearing in 1987's “Dirty Dancing” film, and was on the charts in the summer of 1988. STAFF PICKS:Rough Night in Jericho by Dreams So RealBruce stays with the local flavor with his staff pick featuring a trio from Athens, Georgia. The lead-off and title track from the band's second album hit number 28 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. The band produced three albums in total, with this song being their most successful single. Waiting for a Star to Fall by Boy Meets Girl Rob brings us a more pop song than he normally features. Keyboardist and vocalist George Merrill met singer Shannon Rubicam at a wedding where they were hired to perform, and later got married themselves, making it a “boy meets girl” story. In addition to this song which made it to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, the duo also wrote songs for other performers including “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston.Beds Are Burning by Midnight Oil Lynch's staff pick is a protest song from Australia's Midnight Oil. It criticizes the Australian government for its treatment of Aboriginal communities in forcing them off their lands. Midnight Oil performed this song at the Sydney Olympics, and wore jackets that said, “sorry” after the Australian government would not apologize for the treatment of Aboriginal people.This Note's for You by Neil Young & The Bluenotes Wayne features another protest song, this time from Neil Young. At the time many rock bands and artists were being recruited to appear in commercials for Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Budweiser, and other consumer goods and drinks. MTV controversially banned the video for a period of time due to concerns from advertisers, proving Young's point. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:End Title (from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?") by Alan SilvestriThis live action/animation combination was a hit on the big screens in June of 1988.

Barry saw Midnight Oil live at a Club 1235 in Miami Beach in June 1988 with his medical school classmate, Dr. Michael Franz. Abigail heard the iconic first three notes of Beds Are Burning as very similar to the iconic first three notes of Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. Abigail associated Dreamworld with Can't Get There From Here by R.E.M., although she couldn't quite put her finger on why. Androporosphere (which appears in Whoah) is a made-up word that is a play on anthroposphere. Barry recommended Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson. Abigail believes The Home Depot Beat may be a direct rip-off of Sell My Soul. The double clap at the beginning of Sometimes reminded Abigail of this TikTok. Midnight Oil burst onto the TV screens all over America in 1987 with the videos to "Beds Are Burning" and "The Dead Heart." It was like they were from another world. Well, they kinda were. They were from the other side of the world, at least: Australia. But their follow-up album, 1990's "Blue Sky Mining," proved the Oils were more than just a one- (or two-)hit wonder, or just a vehicle to showcase the frenetic dancing of the tall, lanky, and bald lead singer Peter Garrett. "Blue Sky Mining" brought a rich album across the oceans, an album full of Oils topics du jour: the environment, overdevelopment, the plight of indigenous people, and so on. "There are people who do it really well," R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe once said about artists who sing about politics. Garrett was one of them, with Stipe calling him "brilliant." "Blue Sky Mining" is brilliant in its own right with Midnight Oil creating anthemic, rocking sing-alongs that just so happen to be about asbestos mining, war, or killing the earth.

The LP record (from "long playing" or "long play") is a phonograph record format characterized by a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm, having a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter, and uses the "microgroove" groove specification. Introduced by Columbia in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. The new product was a 12- or 10-inch (30 or 25 cm) fine-grooved disc made of PVC ("vinyl") and played with a smaller-tipped "microgroove" stylus at a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm. Each side of a 12-inch LP could play for about 22 minutes. The average LP has about 1,500 feet (460 m; 0.28 mi) of groove on each side. The average tangential needle speed relative to the disc surface is approximately 1 mile per hour (1.6 km/h; 0.45 m/s). After taking a 2 week long look at 1986, we're taking a detour back to Bizarro World with our third installment of Bizarro Covers. What are Bizarro Covers, you ask? Basically, these are songs that were not originally considered hard rock/metal (mostly) and are being covered by, you guessed it, hard rock and metal bands. There's no shortage of strange cover songs out there and we're happy to share, what we think, are some of the best. We start things off with Yngwie Malmsteen's take on an ABBA disco classic. Of course, Yngwie shows complete restraint; letting the song breathe and allow lots of open space to take in the lyrics.....NOT. Either way, it's an interesting approach to this sugary pop number. Next up is a case of Germany covering Australia as power metal veterans Sinner cover the Midnight Oil 80's classic Beds Are Burning. We keep the German theme going with power/speed metal legends Blind Guardian's 1996 cover of the 1954 Chordettes sugary Mr. Sandman. Not quite as snuggly as the original. Keeping with the old-school vibe, Aaron pulls out The Misfits covering the 1960 Drifters hit This Magic Moment for their Project 1950 album. Jerry Only in fine form on this one. We break new ground coming out of the first break with a cover of a Lady Gaga track! Before you hit the 'unsubscribe' button, give us a chance to expose you to a great performance of Bad Romance by Halestorm. Being the KISS nerds that we are, we couldn't help but pull out a great version of 1977's Plaster Caster from the Love Gun album performed by grunge forerunners The Lemonheads. We really go deep into Bizarro World with the next track being a cover of A-ha's 1985 hit Take on Me from Italian progressive power metal band Vision Divine. You get extra cool points if you've heard this track before. In keeping with strange cover versions, Aaron's choice of Mindless Self Indulgence's cover of Rush's Tom Sawyer will have you looking at the song in a whole new way. Paul Stanley really created a monster (no pun intended) when he penned a song titled Hide Your Heart in the late 1980's. Originally a rejected song from the Crazy Nights album, Stanley put the song on the open market and it was snapped up by a number of different artists including Bonnie Tyler, Molly Hatchet, and Ace Frehley with Frehley's version being the only one that could compete with KISS' release of the song for their 1989 Hot in the Shade album. We take a serious listen to Ace's version of the song from his Trouble Walkin' solo release. Closing out the show is a Doro Pesch cover of Procol Harum's 1967 timeless classic A Whiter Shade of Pale.
