Why is it that people so often close themselves off to good advice? Why do people stubbornly refuse to meditate or consider controversial nutrition tips? Moses was open to new ideas, and he took the advice of his father-in-law with graciousness.Among the great German composers, Mendelssohn may have been too willing to take advice and yield his individuality, whereas Wagner was too egotistical and insular about his music. #19 - "Die Hard" (1988) with Laramy Wells

80's Flick Flashback

John McTiernan‘s 1988 action tour de force is often called one of the greatest action films ever made. It’s a masterclass on every level: building entertaining characters, crafting escalating action, establishing and navigating geography, and putting an empathetic hero through the ringer in the face of extraordinary odds. McTiernan and his collaborators made this all look easy, but as the rash of Hollywood imitators quickly proved, it was anything but. So come on out the coast, we’ll have a few laughs as Laramy Wells and I take off our shoes and make fists with our toes as we discuss “Die Hard” for this episode of the 80’s Flick Flashback. Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: Near the end of the film, Hans Gruber mocks John McClane by saying that the conflict wouldn't end like an American Western with "Grace Kelly riding off into the sunset with John Wayne". McClane corrects him and says he means Gary Cooper. The film referenced is High Noon (1952), another action movie about a lone hero having to defeat a large group of enemies while being vastly outnumbered. At the suggestion of director John McTiernan, Ludwig van Beethoven's Ode to Joy (Ninth Symphony, Fourth Movement) is the musical theme of the terrorists. Hans Gruber, the terrorist leader, even hums it at one point in the movie (while he is on the elevator with Mr. Takagi). Film composer Michael Kamen at first thought it was a "sacrilege" to use Beethoven in an action movie, telling McTiernan: "I will make mincemeat out of Wagner or Strauss for you, but why Beethoven?" McTiernan replied that Ode to Joy had been the theme of the ultra-violence in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971). Kamen, a Kubrick fan, then agreed. From the US midwest in the early 1970s, we find Cleveland proto-punk act the electric eels, who were toying with the tropes of punk years before the movement started. Then we look at Death from Detroit, a band of three brothers who turned down a twenty thousand dollar recording contract in 1975 because they refused to change their name. If any of these subjects make you uncomfortable or are triggering in any way, we recommend not listening until you feel safe and comfortable listening. Please stay safe and take care of yourselves. This week, we take on Stanley Kubrick’s most controversial film, 1971’s A Clockwork Orange. Largely considered an unfilmable novel, Kubrick’s uncompromising vision and incredible visual eye are on full display - and his problematic style of directing. It’s not a stretch to say this is the moment that made Kubrick at best negligent, and at worst, a monster. Yet Malcolm McDowell’s charm is so captivating, and the film’s style so stunning, that somehow you can’t look away. Today, a challenge: bear with us. We decided to shake things up at the show so we threw our staff a curveball, Walter Matthau-style. In two weeks time we told our producers to pitch, report, and produce stories about breaking news….or bears. What emerged was a sort of love letter for our honey-loving friends and a discovery that they embody so much more than we could have imagined: a town’s symbol for hope, a celebrity, a foe, and a clue to future ways we’ll deal with our changing environment.  This episode was reported and produced by Simon Adler, Molly Webster, Bethel Habte, Pat Walters, Matt Kielty, Rachael Cusick, Annie McEwen and Latif Nasser. Special thanks to Wendy Card, Marlene Zuk, Karyn Rode, Barbara Nielsen and Steven Amstrup at Polar Bears International, Jimmy Thomson, Adam Kudlak, Greg Durner, Todd Atwood, and Dawn Curtis and the Environment and Natural Resources Department of Northwest Territories. And thanks to composer Anthony Plog for allowing us to use the Fourth Movement of his "Fantasy Movement," "Very Fast and Manic," performed by Eufonix Quartet off of their album Nuclear Breakfast, available from Potenza Music.  Support Radiolab today at Radiolab.org/donate.
