Kevin Righter's book, Philadelphia's Pencoyd Iron Works: Forging Along the Schuylkill River began as a family history project. Righter's great grandfather, Walter Righter worked at Pencoyd from 1885 through 1933, retiring as superintendent of motive power. When Righter began research for this project, he realized that little had been written on Pencoyd Iron Works, which operated in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia for nearly a century, so he sought to fill that gap. This interview covers that family history and interweaves it with the history of steelmaking in the United States, from Pencoyd's opening in 1852, through coming under control of US Steel to its closure following the end of WWII. Pencoyd's steel was most famously used in the construction of bridges and the first elevated railways in the United States, but many architects in the late nineteenth century incorporated Pencoyd steel into their structures, including Philadlephia's Frank Furness. Many bridges and structures containing Pencoyd manufactured steel still exist around the world today in places as far apart as Japan, Sudan, Mexico, Taiwan, Kenya, and throughout the United States. Kevin Righter works in planetary sciences in Houston, Texas. He has a lifelong interest in genealogy and Philadelphia's industrial history. Part One: My first time having sex with a woman was on my wedding night and it was her first time too. We were virgins. We knew nothing. My pastor gave me a book to break it down. I tell this story as if I am at a Stand-Up comedy club open mic. Part Two: Seeing the Paul Taylor Dance Company today brought back a flood of memories from when I first saw them in NYC in the late 1980's. At that time I was deep into gay conversion therapy trying to become straight. What would have happened if I didn't go down that path? Part Three: A Sound slice of audio recorded in my study in Sunbury Pennsylvania. My husband and I live in a renovated passenger railroad station that was designed in the late 1880's by famed architect, Frank Furness. I heard it was the first railroad station to be lit by electrification, set up by Thomas Edison and his crew. Music: The Bubble & Squeak Theme song is Worthless by The jellyrox from the Bang and whimper album. You also heard Know Your Lies by Water Mirrors and I Will Remember Everything Forever by Ave Air. My next guest is an internationally sought after sales and technology speaker and social media presenter. His talk on the new world of sales has been presented locally. He specialises in LinkedIn Advance Google search and video marketing. Frank Furness works in tandem to produce great results for organisations helping them to prospect and sell more. I asked Frank for his advice on selling through these challenging times of COVID19.  Well, about two weeks ago, I was contacted back on to New York. say to me Listen, all my salespeople are going to start working from home. Can you put together a course, so I put together a course: sellingfromyourhome.com and it is based around the acronym HOME. You have got to form the right kind of Habits, get up early and post every day. You have got enough time to Optimise all your social media, your LinkedIn, especially to attract people. The M using the Mobility you have got to use things like zoom and boom.TV and a lot of other great resources out there. And E is Establishing your credibility. Frank advises to regularly stay in touch with past clients, he got asked to do a virtual conference on working from home. So, he recommends staying in touch with all your clients and make use of technology. Frank gave an example of demonstrating your expertise to attract clients. He formed a LinkedIn group of  20. They post every day and get between 2 and 5000 views, people now coming back and saying you seem to be an expert in this area let's talk. Only after demonstrating your expertise that leads to conversations you should start the sales process. Frank said, “if I get something from someone just saying use me for search engine optimization, I'm like, I don't know you, I've never heard of you. why should I use you?” Instead, develop a relationship, prove your expertise, and maybe they will do business with you. The first thing is prospecting, and Frank uses an advanced Google and Boolean search strategy. He said you have got to know who your ideal target market is. Frank works in the insurance fields, so he looks for financial advisors, owner sales directors of insurance companies, and he works in health and fitness, so, looks for owners of health and fitness clubs. Frank recommends using the great searches that you can use with Boolean and a great little tool called recruitin.net, which gives you LinkedIn Advanced Search without paying for it.  Then start connecting with those people but be personalised. If they look at my profile, Frank takes them to a video squeeze. Form a relationship with them on a personalised level. Secondly, put out great content. Thirdly, set up a zoom call, which is when the relationship starts moving. Frank recommends his pre-sale strategy. Look at the company website, get a feel for the company and the person that you're going to meet. Take a look at their LinkedIn profile to get a feel for them, read their posts, do a search on that person and the company see what comes up. Look at the news, what has been said about that company and Facebook is a good source of personal information. Frank discovered a prospective client he was going to meet loved Go Karting. For the first 30 minutes, they discussed his special Love of karting, and he became a client. Frank said, you have got to do your homework you have got all these great tools out there now, why not use them? Set up Google Alerts with your search key terms, it will send you relevant articles and see what comes it could lead to a potential lead, says Frank. Now's the time to contact your clients and your prospects because what is the biggest objection, I'm too busy. They cannot be busy now; you have got their undivided attention. You have got great tools like Zoom where you can have a great conversation with them. Now is the best time ever, to be selling. Frank Furness (1839-1912) has remained a curiosity to architectural historians and critics, somewhere between an icon and an enigma, whose importance and impact have yet to be properly evaluated or appreciated. To some, his work pushed pattern and proportion to extremes, undermining or forcing together the historic styles he referenced in such eclectic buildings as the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania Library. To others, he was merely a regional mannerist creating an eccentric personal style that had little resonance and modest influence on the future of architecture. By placing Furness in the industrial culture that supported his work, George Thomas finds a cutting-edge revolutionary who launched the beginnings of modern design, played a key part in its evolution, and whose strategies continue to affect the built world. In his sweeping reassessment of Furness as an architect of the machine age, Thomas grounds him in Philadelphia, a city led by engineers, industrialists, and businessmen who commissioned the buildings that extended modern design to Chicago, Glasgow, and Berlin. Thomas examines the multiple facets of Victorian Philadelphia's modernity, looking to its eager embrace of innovations in engineering, transportation, technology, and building, and argues that Furness, working for a particular cohort of clients, played a central role in shaping this context. His analyses of the innovative planning, formal, and structural qualities of Furness's major buildings identifies their designs as initiators of a narrative that leads to such more obviously modern figures as Louis Sullivan, William Price, Frank Lloyd Wright and eventually, the architects of the Bauhaus. George E. Thomas is a cultural and architectural historian who serves as co-director of the Critical Conservation Program at Harvard's Graduate School of Design. Penn's picturesque urban campus features some of the most impressive architecture in Philadelphia, including buildings that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. For 120 years, Penn was located in Center City Philadelphia before the campus relocated to West Philadelphia in 1872. The Gothic Revival style College Hall, designed in 1872 by architect Thomas Webb Richards, was the first building constructed on the new campus. The multi-purpose building housed faculty offices, classrooms, a gym, the library and research labs. The original building included clock towers on each side of the center portion of the building. The west tower, which had a large bell that called students to class, was removed 1914 (the bell is now on display in Houston Hall). The east tower was torn down in 1929. Professor David Brownlee of Penn's Department of the History of Art, says, "the University relocated itself really on the crest of a wave of prosperity and achievement. Those buildings built in the first decade or so after we moved to West Philadelphia reflect the energy of an industrial America and of its greatest industrial city." Brownlee, an architectural historian, co-authored "Building America's First University: An Historical and Architectural Guide to the University of Pennsylvania." Fisher Fine Arts Library, designed by prominent Philadelphia architect Frank Furness in 1891, is also in the National Register of Historic places. The Furness building was renovated and restored to its original grandeur in 1991, and it was renamed Fisher Fine Arts Library in honor of donors Anne and Jerome Fisher. In 1957, during a second building boom on campus, Penn hired renowned architect Louis Kahn to design the Richards Medical Research Building. It was completed in 1960, and Brownlee says Kahn's innovative design changed the world of modern architecture. "It was, in every conceivable way, as different from the architecture from the recent past as it was possible to be," Brownlee says. "Rough and granular, where that architecture [of the recent past] was smooth. Irregular and picturesque where that architecture had been composed defined by simple geometric forms. Highly specialized with respect to its purpose and to its place as that architecture had been generic." Having designed the structure to fit in with surrounding buildings, Kahn, a Penn alum, incorporated complementary colors and textures from the Morgan Building, and the Quad dormitories. Today, the Richards Medical Research Lab is among the buildings on an elite list of National Historic Landmarks, under a program run by the National Park Service. Text by Jeanne Leong
