She also talks about what is happening in queer publishing right now and shares some of her favourite queer YA and romance authors. Note to listeners: this episode was prerecorded in September 2022. This summer, on a small road in south-east London, a crowd of people prevented immigration officers from detaining a local man. Protestors sat on the ground in front of the van he was held in for hours, shouting “Let him go!”. From Pollokshields to Peckham, over the last couple of years we've seen how people can come together to physically stop immigration raids in their communities and protect their neighbours. But with the government giving the police more powers to crack down on protests, will actions like these be able to continue? What is happening to civil liberties in the UK? And who is fighting back? Who says Pride is only 30 days? Paul and Corey are discussing queer films in this month's theme, “Pride and Prejudice.” This week, Paul's friend recommended the British film, Pride (2014). Based on the true story of the small organization (created by communist and gay-right activist Mark Ashton) Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) success in fundraising for the National Union of Mineworkers' (NUM) yearlong (1984-1985) strike against Margaret Thatcher's neoliberal assault. With a star-studded cast, the film does a truly brilliant job of combining the personal and the political, showing how solidarity works to overcome prejudice and distrust and builds power, and rejecting the tendency of stories like this to lionize a heroic leader – instead showing how people working together gets the goods.

Erin and Brennan turn left at that one village without any vowels to find themselves in a village with only one vowel. Wait, are we in Wales? Why yes, good chap! We're in the UK in 1984 when Margret Thatcher (Darth Karen) went to war against the mining unions across the nation. And in these dark times, times when help is of the utmost importance, to whom can we turn for aid? THE GAYS!!!! Specifically a small group looking to buck the system called LGSM, Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners. We're treated to Jonathan Blake teaching the straight men of southern Wales to dance to disco, as well as heart warming stories of the most unlikely friendships. Welsh women having the best night of their lives in London gay bars, young queer people finding their voice, and even older generations accepting their own truths. To reach these goals, they must fight the bigotry of Karens everywhere that are so determined in their quest to be Karens that they torpedo the hopes of their own community. Thank goodness there are Siâns in the world.

In the first episode of the LGBTQ+ Podcast, our guest, Vinnosh Kumar, discusses the situation of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in the UK. Asylum claims based on sexual orientation and gender identity are systematically rejected both in the UK and Europe. The officials often expect the claimant to convince them that they are ‘truly' gay or trans or other. One in three claimants is refused asylum because the officials did not believe their sexual orientation or gender identity. According to international human rights law, instead of asking whether the claimant is undoubtedly gay, the officials should ask whether they face a threat of prosecution in their country of origin based on the grounds of their sexuality. There is also a cultural and language barrier. Many languages are not conditioned to express non-heteronormative relationships and identities. In the UK, the LGBTQ+ asylum seekers suffer consequences of hostile asylum policies, especially in regards to housing. 60 per cent of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers live with friends and partners in private rented accommodations or houses of multiple occupations. Those who interact with their landlords face indifference or discrimination. Nevertheless, there have been some positive developments in the case law regarding the LGBTQ+ community in the UK. In Birmingham City Council v Afsar, the case discussed in this episode, the Court agreed that an interim injunction should be granted to restrain the anti-LGBT protests organised by parents of students of the local primary school. SOGICA Project indicates that, according to international human rights law, instead of asking whether the claimant is undoubtedly gay, the officials should ask whether they face a threat of prosecution in their country of origin based on the grounds of their sexuality or gender identity. Moreover, Vinnosh mentions the case HJ and HT v Home Secretary, where the Court decided that the fact that the claimants would not face prosecution in their country provided they concealed their sexuality could not be an argument in favor of deportation. Vinnosh also recommends the movie My Son is Gay. How are you? Hannah: Good, thank you. Gem: Thanks so much for taking part. So if anyone who hasn't come across your work before, it'd be really great if you could introduce yourself and a bit about what you do. Hannah: Yeah, sure. So I'm Hannah Rose, I'm German-born, London-based, Iraqi, trans non-binary, woman of colour, neurodivergent. I think that's all the intersectionalities so it's a long list and it's quite a struggle. I do a lot of work in organising activism and queer spaces here in London, and in some other places like occasionally Berlin and yeah, my goal in London right now is just to help the queer community as much as possible and bring as much positive political change about as I can. Gem: Yeah. And how did you get into and be involved in activism? Hannah: So, it all started with Bi Pandas actually. Bi Pandas is this London based group. They started off last year. They were at pride when Monroe, who's quite a prominent drag performer and use to be a DJ. I was like, Hey, there's no proper bisexual representation, actual queer, bisexual representation at pride. Let's change that. And them and their partner Max, they did so, so, so much work. And spent so much money on getting a float for Pride. And it was just amazing. It was the most queer thing. The pictures from there are so amazing. We're going to do the same thing this year. So you'll see us around pride. And,...

How do we understand and engage in today's conversation about gender? What on earth is going on with gender and identity politics, and what is the personal dimension? Ben is at Queen's University in Kingston to chat with Dr. Lee Airton, author of Gender: Your Guide — A Gender-Friendly Primer on What to Know, What to Say, and What to Do in the New Gender Culture. It's a fascinating, important and unexpectedly fun conversation about the unique historical moment in which we live today. About the Guest Dr. Lee Airton is an Assistant Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies in Education at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. As a researcher, blogger, advocate and speaker, Dr. Airton focuses on enabling individuals and institutions to welcome gender and sexual diversity in everyday life. In 2012, they founded They Is My Pronoun, a Q+A-based blog about gender-neutral pronoun usage and user support with over 30,000 unique visitors in 2017 alone. Dr. Airton is also the founder of the No Big Deal Campaign, a national social media initiative that helps people show support for transgender peoples' right to have their pronouns used. In recognition of their advocacy work, Dr. Airton received a 2017 Youth Role Model of the Year Award from the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity. Dr. Airton's first book is Gender – Your Guide: A Gender-Friendly Primer on What to Know, What to Say and What to Do in the New Gender Culture, which offers practical steps for welcoming gender diversity in all areas of everyday life. As a university-based teacher educator for over ten years, Dr. Airton has worked with hundreds of teacher candidates to widen the circle of belonging and participation for students of all genders and sexualities. Dr. Airton's current SSHRC-funded research explores how K-12 schools are responding to the inclusion of gender identity and gender expression protections in human rights legislation, including implications for teacher education. Dr. Airton's scholarly publications have appeared in the journals Gender and Education, Sex Education, Curriculum Inquiry, Teachers College Record, and the Journal of Education Policy, and their editorials have been published in The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star. With Dr. Susan Woolley, they are also editing a forthcoming collection of lesson plans on gender diversity for K-12 teachers. Learn more about Lee or follow them on Twitter (@LeeAirton). Happy New Year it’s Episode 90! We’re starting 2019 with returning guests JoJCast’s Jo and Jay, reviewing Jo’s choice Pride.   Pride is a 2014 British film true story of the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign during the 1980s that supported and raised funds for the miners during the strikes. It’s easy to lump this in with the likes of The Full Monty - Pride does have moments of humour but it’s not the driving force. Its story was very nearly lost and if you know it then you’ll realise how it’s almost unbelievable - while the film does employ some artistic license most of what is depicted is the truth. So important is its story it could have been leaden with over sentimentality or sugarcoated over some of the more serious elements. It’s not a documentary or a biopic, it’s a starting point for learning more about the story and the work LGSM, a documentary would certainly be welcomed though. Pride has such a wide appeal that you can’t feel for everyone involved, supported by an excellent cast that includes Dominic West, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Paddy Considine is it unsurprising Flixwatcher and guests gave it a lot of love. Scores [supsystic-tables id=93] Pride scores very highly in all categories and overall a very respectable 4.32, highly recommended if you haven’t watched it already.  What do you guys think? If you have seen the film, Pride, about the involvement of lesbian and gay activists in the UK miners' strike of the 1980s - or even if you haven't - you will find this discussion that took place at Birkbeck, University  of London, hosted by  BiGS (Birkbeck Gender & Sexuality) and The Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities  fascinating. The event was called Pits and Perverts Revisited, a reference to the benefit ball organised by LGSM (Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners), at which the line up included Bronski Beat. The discussion starts with the making of the film and goes on to look at the politics of the Thatcher era when, as Mike Jackson says, you had to be a "very brave person indeed" to declare your homosexuality.  It explores the legacy of the Miners strike and the relevance of LGSM to today. The first section brings together Mike Jackson and Sian James MP, both active in the strike and featured in Pride.  It is chaired by Daniel Monk. In the second part of the event,Diarmaid Kelliher of Glasgow University focuses on the politics of the 1970s and 1980s and explores the culture of solidarity that was so important in the strike and beyond. In the final section, Bev Skeggs, Professor of Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London 'commits a sociology' as she considers the 'enemies within'. ......................... A couple of years ago, we carried a blog by Chris Creegan which also considered the legacy of that period (Margaret Thatcher had just died). It carried a picture of Chris's copy of the Pits and Perverts poster, one of the few still in existence, and reflected on Chris's own experience as a gay trade unionist and how Thatcher's triumph on the economic front contributed to her defeat in the social arena. ............................... One of the most moving parts of the film Pride was Bronwen Lewis singing Bread and Roses - and here it is...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiiKgST_G2Q
