Advertising and innovation are perhaps the two most important components of a company, and both are changing faster than ever before. So, how can advertisers better understand and harness the influence of social media content creators? Our guest on this episode is Geoffrey Colon, Head of Brand Studio at Microsoft Advertising and the author of Marketing: What Growth Hackers, Data Punks, and Other Hybrid Thinkers Can Teach Us About Navigating the New Normal. Geoffrey is well qualified to discuss how individual creators and organizations are being challenged to think about accountability, and how their message and actions affect their reputation. We start off the conversation by discussing how every action taken by your company and its employees is a marketing action, even if you don't intend it to be. Geoffrey explains why companies need to consider how they are seen - from interactions with customer service, to social media, to advertising campaigns and thought leadership. Are you presenting a clear and consistent message? Content creators on TikTok and Instagram are capable of massive reach and influence. With that in mind, what can be learned from their methods? Geoffrey talks to us about the changing world of public relations, and how companies can team up with like-minded influencers to create unique campaigns that are mutually beneficial. We round out the conversation by discussing how thought leadership can help build a brand's reputation. Geoffrey goes on to explain how this can only be done when an organization's thought leadership matches the actions being taken by the company. Trust is immediately lost when the audience sees a company speak about something they clearly don't understand, or worse, when the organization's actions are contrary to their thought leadership message. If you want a better picture of how to bet on the future of your company's public relations and reputation you'll want to listen to this episode! Three Key Takeaways: Thought Leadership should stay true to the actions of the company. Don't tell others about customer service practices if your company is known for having bad customer service. Brands can reach new audiences by teaming up with content creators to spread the thought leadership message of their company. It is important for thought leaders to understand not only the financial standing of the company they are working for but the ethical standing as well.

I've been trying to think about anything except our current situation. It's just terrible and not many bright spots, especially as any attempt at dialogue goes immediately to the political, which I abhor. I've been fortunate to be spending time with my immediate family and we have been (mostly) getting along. We've been talking about things we can't wait to get back to, or things we miss from our paused lives. I have been surprised how little my children complain about the isolation measures and how few things I've realized I truly miss or long for from the outside world. Surely, I can't be the only one who has identified a few brands I've already realized I can leave behind. In avoiding "the new normal" I've started wondering what might come of all of this. I spoke to Head of Brand Studio at Microsoft Advertising, Geoffrey Colon about what he thinks the next normal might look like, and the trends driving that. He's looking at the data to see how people are adapting so far. Want the transcript? You can find it here: http://adampierno.com/geoffrey-colon-wonders-whats-next/Dig this episode? Share it. In today's digital world, the latest news, reviews, and competitive insights, are at the buyer's finger tips instantly. If your business does not stand out from your competitors, how are you going to grab the buyer's attention? The Author of Disruptive Marketing, Podcast Host of Disruptive FM, and the Head of Brand Studio, Microsoft Advertising, Geoffrey Colon, challenges marketers to stand out among their competitors to create unique experiences for their buyers. This episode covers branding, redesigning processes, encouragement for reinvention, and discusses trends on podcasts, buying experiences, and career advice, that every marketer can use. Check it out! Takeaways: What kind of in-person experience can you provide to your customers in conjunction with the digital marketing that you are doing? As businesses move into the digital space, they are all starting to look the same. How can your business differentiate itself from the rest? Brands are now more important than ever. A brand is what your company stands for and what your buyers can connect with. It is important to make sure that your brand stands out from your competitors. As businesses reinvent themselves, they need to factor in that mistakes will be made. Human error is inevitable. To stay competitive, companies need to reinvent themselves to evolve with changes in the market and with the trends of their buyer behaviors. Have the curiosity to go and experience an interesting trend or process, rather than doubting it right away. For example, look at podcasts, short-form video, and Netflix, these are trends that took off that people in the past may have ignored because they said, "That will not take off." Career advice from Geoffrey Colon - Don't sweat the small stuff and find people to work with that have had experiences with failure and have learned from their past. Things just reconfigure and evolve or hybrid processes are created. Traditional marketing does not work anymore, only digital matters. - Businesses need to do a blend of traditional and digital marketing. The traditional physical touches with buyers still work when properly placed. Businesses need to understand their buyers and know when traditional marketing is needed and when digital marketing is needed.
