In this episode, Christina engages in a thought-provoking conversation with behaviour specialist Andy Baker. They explore the complexities of behaviour management, particularly in the context of neurodiversity, and how understanding behaviour as a form of communication can transform interactions in both personal and professional settings. Andy shares his extensive experience in the health and social care sector, emphasizing the importance of empathy and the need to approach behaviour with curiosity rather than judgment.   KEY TAKEAWAYS All Behavior is Communication: It is crucial to understand that behaviour, whether it's a child acting out or an adult struggling, is a form of communication. Be a Detective, Not a Judge: Instead of jumping to conclusions about someone's behaviour, it's important to investigate the reasons behind it. The Importance of Self-Esteem: Many individuals, especially those who are neurodivergent, may struggle with self-esteem due to repeated negative feedback about their behaviour. Understanding Neurodiversity: Neurodivergent individuals, such as those with ADHD, may process information and respond to situations differently. Flexibility in Expectations: It's vital to adjust expectations based on an individual's developmental level rather than their chronological age.   BEST MOMENTS "The general premise is that all behavior is communication. I'm telling you something; I may not like the language you're using, but I'm communicating that at least I'm not happy." "Your response is your responsibility, right? Because we're the adults in that situation." "If I look at something like ADHD, one of the analogies I love for understanding attentiveness is like the bingo machine analogy. Some individuals with ADHD, their brain is like a bingo machine." "It's almost like I hate it when people say everyone's on the spectrum. I hate when people use the spectrum as an excuse." "If a kid doesn't know how to behave, then we should teach them. But there's still a philosophy there of sometimes punish them."   VALUABLE RESOURCES Christina Talks Podcast https://www.green-umbrella.biz/how-to-launch-anything-using-social-media/ ABOUT THE HOST Christina has been working with SME's since 2013 to launch, develop and perfect their online presence. In this episode we're diving into the fundamentals of how to get strong, and our guest is one of the best in the game at taking novices to pretty serious levels of strength. Andy Baker began his career in the strength & conditioning industry in 2001, as an intern while attending Texas A&M University. Like many people in the early 2000s he witnessed 9/11 and thought exercise science lectures might not be exactly where he needed to be, so in 2003, he stepped away from college and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served multiple combat tours in Iraq between 2003-2007. While serving on active duty he continued to coach clients and finished his undergraduate degree in Health & Sport Science from American Military University. In 2007, he opened the doors to Kingwood Strength & Conditioning (now Baker Personal Training) and he has served as the owner and lead trainer for the past 16 years! His clients range from Division I college athletes to people in their 80s! As you'll hear in the episode he's been extensively involved in Starting Strength working with Mark Rippetoe, including co-authoring the current edition of Practical Programming for Strength Training and the Barbell Prescription. He has also competed as a Raw and Drug-Free Powerlifter with the Natural Athlete Strength Association. In 2010, I won the N.A.S.A. Grand Nationals in the 198 lb raw division. My winning total included a 529 lb Squat, 380 lb Bench Press, and 562 lb Deadlift. We didn't work it into today's discussion, but his rebrand from strength and conditioning to personal training has also involved a refocus on older adults and strength training for longevity. As that space grows, he has made some really important contributions to that expanding part of the fitness industry.

Host Greg Swatek talks to the guys about what made this team so close knit and why they were able to pull through in so many close games. Prior to their one-run victory in the state final, they beat Patuxent 2-1 on a suicide squeeze in a 13-inning state semifinal that ended close to midnight at McCurdy Field. The guys talk about those memorable moments and the future of the program going forward with so many players graduating. Prior to that conversation, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg to discuss the baseball state titles won by Middletown and Brunswick, Frederick County players currently playing and thriving in minor league baseball and a dramatic increase to athletic fees for Frederick County Public Schools.

He discusses how he gradually got better and stepping into the leadoff role for Middletown at the start of this season. Meanwhile, Baker talks about challenging this team to help it reach its potential and what winning another state title, the school's first in baseball since 2017, would mean to him and his players. Doublly blessed this week to be joined by not one but two HOP professionals - The Dynamic Duo of Andy Baker and Matt Florio.Andy started practicing and teaching Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) principles while working for one of the largest multinational industrial companies in the world. As an environmental health and safety leader of manufacturing, assembly and distribution facilities, she worked through the complexity of adopting HOP principles from the ground up.In 2014, she was named the HOP leader for one of the company sectors. She taught HOP Fundamentals and Learning Teams around the US and helped develop and implement strategies to anchor the concepts in existing operating rhythms. She began extrapolating these strategies to a larger scale, and in 2015 became the HOP Senior Expert for the company's 300+ multi-sector locations in Europe. In this position, she coached fatality and serious incident investigations while continuing to train and develop culture change strategies to help embed HOP principles into industrial day-to-day activities. After hearing about HOP for almost a decade from his sister-in-law Andrea (Andy), Matt left his last role as a VP in the software/start-up world to join the HOP movement. He has a background in education and training (both virtual and in-person) and experience as an executive in the software industry. His immediate focus is on finding ways we can share, teach, mentor, and coach on HOP concepts outside the safety space. Thanks for listening. We have some great guests coming up in future pods so get ready to learn. Until next time, enjoy the rest of your week, and stay safe. https://plus.acast.com/s/health-and-safety-conversations. We're back with another “Xs and Os” episode about how to plan your training, this time focusing on strength specifically. In this episode Drew lays out his version of the Heavy-Light-Medium framework. His primary influence here was the work of Andy Baker who was in turn influenced by Bill Starr, and you'll find many commonalities between this framework and some of the most popular templates like Starting Strength and Westside. This version of Heavy-Light-Medium is different from the original. Instead of relying on different %1RM of the same movements, it uses exercise selections that force the athlete into differently loaded variations of the same foundational movement pattern. This adjustment makes it more applicable outside of powerlifting. Drew also introduces a variety of ways to incorporate variations on the core framework, ultimately arriving at a tactical template that looks an awful lot like “Heavy – Pump – Metcon” (you'll have to listen to figure out that part). Some of this can get a little hard to picture visually when you're only listening to the audio, so this episode will be accompanied by both a blog post and an Instagram post with the visuals for the 3x3 charts that are discussed. Yes, I (Alex) know I mispronounced Schoenfeld's name at the beginning, and yes I should know better. But Drew is the one with the Master's degree in this field, so I blame him for not correcting me. On today's show Robert and Trent welcome guest coach Andy Baker, Starting Strength Coach and co-author of Practical Programming for Strength Training, 3rd Edition and The Barbell Prescription: Strength Training for Life After 40. Andy is a master coach with a wide range of expertise and interests. He coaches high level competitive powerlifters, bodybuilders, high school and collegiate sport athletes, and regular folks just looking to become generally fit and strong. Along the way he's learned a lot about packing on muscle, and has identified common mistakes guys make when struggling to add mass, especially to their upper body.   In today's show Andy addresses the difference between strength training and hypertrophy training, a frequent point of contention amongst powerlifters, bodybuilders, and the "gym bro" crowd. As Andy puts it, both bodybuilding and powerlifting are performance based, whether you like it or not. The powerlifter obviously must perform on a platform where his or her best lifts will  be judged on completion, while a bodybuilder is judged on more subjective criteria such as muscle size, symmetry, and separation. Both competitors are strength athletes; growing muscle requires regularly adding weight to the target lifts and progressively overloading them. Where they will differ is specificity. The powerlifter will need to train his skill and neuromuscular efficiency in producing 1RM's on meet day, while the bodybuilder needs to look a certain way. For the bodybuilder, then, the ideal rep ranges will be higher -- most likely 4 to 12 reps -- while the powerlifter will spend more time in the 5 and under rep range. Likewise, the bodybuilder will choose exercises which stimulate the most muscle group for their unique body type, anthropometry, and genetic predisposition, while the powerlifter will spend most of his time performing the competion lifts (squat, bench, deadlift).   Thus, one of Andy's keys to growing muscle mass is understanding that the goals are different from general strength training and especially competitive strength sports. There are no required lifts for growing muscle. Instead, you want to focus on lifts which are highly stimulative to the muscles you're trying to grow, and these lifts will vary from person to person. Andy paraphrases one of his influences, bodybuilding coach Dante Trudell, when he says "pick a handful of movements that work for your body and get them as strong as possible in a medium rep range."   Andy has written extensively about training for strength, mass, and sport on his website. He also offers in-person and online coaching, as well as programming templates for a variety of fitness goals: https://www.andybaker.com   Andy also has a podcast, the Baker Barbell Podcast, available on all the usual streaming platforms. Coaching can be a fun and highly rewarding profession, because you get to help people become better versions of themselves, gain confidence, and build more resilient bodies. One of the quickest ways to burn out from the profession, however, is to make financial mistakes. There are a number of financial pitfalls young coaches fall into when leaving their W-2 jobs and going into business for themselves, including saving for quarterly taxes, managing bank accounts, and setting aside money for retirement.   In this episode, Andy Baker offers simple and practical advice for young coaches (or people going into business for themselves for the first time) to avoid the most common money mistakes. He lays out a strategy to set aside money from every payment for taxes and retirement savings, and explains how you can use multiple bank accounts to ensure you always have enough money to cover quarterly tax payments and unforeseen business expenses that may come up as you grow your income.   Want to work with Andy one-on-one to solve your business problems?
