ENDO on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/27/22 About ENDO - There are individuals who are early adopters, then there are those who are innovators. Mike Henderson aka ENDO falls into the latter category. A ubiquitous figure in electronic dance music for going on two decades, ENDO is a musician, a DJ, a teacher, an inventor, and a visionary. A graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in electronic music production and music synthesis and a lifelong drummer, ENDO's technical know-how is an inherent gift. He serves as a product specialist for the always innovative audio technology company iZotope and as an online DJ instructor for his alma mater, Berklee Online. He has an ongoing relationship with Native Instruments as a certified Native specialist, having trained the likes of Carl Cox, Grandmaster Flash, Danny Tenaglia, and David Morales on Traktor. He has contributed greatly to the accuracy of Mixed In Key's algorithm. He is also the co-founder of the evolutionary mapping platform, MIDI Monsters, and the booking platform, AGNT. “My sets are all harmonic progression,” says ENDO. “Every song is in key, or intentionally out of key, modulated harmonically. You can subliminally play with people's emotions with harmonic mixing. There's all this tension, then you give them the harmonic release. You have to tell your story. You have to find the songs that speak to you. That's the art form, the intuition of a good DJ.” ENDO has unleashed his patented brand of harmonic mixing at events across the globe including: Pacha, Marquee, and Cielo in New York, Sound in Los Angeles, Guvernment and Coda in Toronto, Stereo in Montreal, Spybar in Chicago, Heart in Miami, Sands in Ibiza, Club Vertigo in Costa Rica, as well as BPM Festival in Mexico and Electric Festival in Aruba. He has played alongside John Digweed, DJ Craze, Roc Raida, Victor Calderone, Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Chus & Ceballos, Eric Prydz, to name just a few, and perhaps given them a much-sought-after technical tip or two in the process. Gangstercast 49 comes from Toronto-based Nathan Barato. Nathan Barato is a Toronto favourite and has been a staple in the city’s underground scene for more than 15 years. Early into his career, his ability behind the decks was quickly recognized by industry peers and fans alike, landing him residencies at some of Toronto’s most established nightclubs, including the iconic Guvernment nightclub, Footwork and Mad Bar. Musically, Nathan’s range dabbles in many genres, going back to his early influences of 90’s garage, and ranging to many spans of house and techno. His music has been released on some of the most prestigious labels in the industry, including Hot Creations, Rekids, Cajual, Saved Records, MOOD, Defected, Suara, Inmotion, Snatch, and of course, his very own Roots And Wings Music. As Nathan Barato continues to turn industry eyes and ears in his direction, he remains a well-respected and sought after name. He’s been booked to play some of the largest events and clubs around the world, including Womb Tokyo, Stereo Montreal, DC-10 Ibiza, Amnesia Ibiza, Fabric London, Coda Toronto, Output New York, and Magazzini Generali in Milan to name a few. Nathan recently enjoyed a summer spent in Ibiza where he held residency at arguably the largest party of the summer, Marco Carola’s legendary Music On. Nathan was also invited to play Music On in Mexico, Milan and Miami, as well as Jamie Jones’ Paradise in Ibiza. While Nathan’s career has him busy playing in cities around the globe, he remains proud to call Toronto home. He explains that this mix represents him well as him as an artist, because it was taken live from Coda for his recent open to close set. “I think it shows my versatility, timing and flow” says Nathan. CODA nightclub is in Toronto, Canada where Nathan lives. It is one of the only underground clubs in the city. It used to be called Footwork which is where Nathan use to play a lot, also with Carlo Lio, another Toronto house music hero. He describes the House Gangster sound as “raw, fast and fun”. When asked what the House gangster movement meant to him, he replies; “To me, it means be yourself, believe in yourself and fuck everyone else.” Nathan would like to give a special mention about this mix, in saying “Thankyou to the people that were at Coda and giving me good vibes to influence me in the way they did.”

Afflicted with the house bug? Don't worry, we know how you feel. Been addicted to house music since were were 16yrs old. This is the best time for house music we've ever seen. It's wonderful to be excited every week about new house tracks you've never heard at your favourite mp3 stores. House DJ/ Producer friends on facebook and twitter sharing their mixes, their youtube video picks of cool house related stuff- it's endless!! Parties with different types of house music all over the city, tons of up & comers and tons of great international House DJs visiting Toronto. Yes, there's too much house now, too many mixes, too many sub-genres and too many related electronic music- COMPLETE SYSTEM OVERLOAD!! But, hey... gone are the days where you are begging for a mixed house cassette tape by a popular dj and having the pickings be slim. Gone are the days of going to your favourite record stores each week, buying the same records as 30-50 other djs and everyone playing the same records. The selection was scarce compared to now. Gone are the days of paying $16.99 for a 4 track EP- where you only bought it for the one goosebump track. Now there's so much music out there that you can actually not sound like everyone else. You can listen to thousands of house tunes and the chances (at the sheer volume of what's coming out) of you sounding like someone else are small. And the best part? It's dirt cheap, after getting a 15-20% online discount coupon you end up paying $50-60 bucks for 30 traxs- what a thrill!! It's so good to be constantly re-excited (if there is such a word ; ) or re-energized about house. It's a ritual with Jim and I. Putting a few tracks every few days into our virtual bins or spending a weekend going crazy hunting for tracks that make us want to dance. Then listening to them together in a long car ride- finishing with some late night food in Chinatown or Greektown in downtown Toronto. Then it goes into iphone or ipod and listened to in pockets of time, more car rides, getting on the treadmill, then making a mix. Then another car ride together seeing if it makes us both happy- we've always DJ for ourselves and if some people like it along the way, then that's the cherry on top. Back to the house ritual... then going through the frustration of redoing the mix over and over again because it just wasn't fun enough, wasn't good enough or wasn't timeless enough. You just don't want to throw something together. If it's not special to you, it won't be to someone else. We want to make mixes where people would hopefully enjoy it enough to actually want to listen to it a 2nd time and if they listen anymore, then it's Christmas! In this day and age of having too much available and nothing getting any real attention- attention is a precious commodity. We don't value what is easily attained. Rather have a few hundred people that really love our brand of house music, then to have thousands of people who don't care and can't tell the difference. Worst to be background filler house. Usually make anywhere between 4-8 mixes from a selection of 60-90 tracks within a month or two (between the cracks of time sandwiched by work and family)- then the mix that moves us the most gets posted. That's the whole process in a nutshell. Thank you so much for taking your time to visit us here and for listening to our mixes. We are so excited to share with you the tracks that move us each month. All the best to you and all your endeavours- be the best you can be and stay passionate!! Cheers, dattrax Please comment on each mix you enjoy or email us- we would love to hear from you.
