TC PODCAST W/ VALENTINØ Valentinø is the alias of Italian DJ and producer Valentino Marchiori, based in Genoa, Italy. The founder of Mantra Club since 2016 in the suburbs of the city, he also runs his own label, Overtime Records. His label and others have provided a platform for his trademark sound incorporating hypnotic melodies and frenetic rhythms within the techno and Psy-Trance genres. The son of a musician, his games as a child were instruments that his father had at home or in the studio. He developed skills from a young age, which he then channelled and fine tuned into electronic music, and the journey began. Valentinø's very first single ‘Activity' appeared in 2017, on Marco Bailey's Materia label as part of a VA, which lead to his debut follow up EP ‘My Way'. After its success, and notable support from colleagues, he secured releases on Etruria Beat, Suara, Second State, Off Recordings and Galactica Festival's label. Now part of the ARTCORE family, he played for the labels OFFSonar showcase in Barcelona, but he has already amounted a lot of key club plays for Fabrik Madrid, Cocorico, ilMuretto, Khidi Tiblisi, Spazio 900, Barrakud Festival, Complex Maastricht, Complex, and a debut at Amnesia Ibiza alongside Indira in the Club Room for her takeover as part of Joseph Capriati's Metamorphosis party. Looking ahead, he has secured a new residency with Bologia Club, one of the most renowned Northian Italian venues, and will be starting his own festival, called Enigma, with his mission to curate a special line up with scenography effects. There's a lot to think about when playing an early set for such an iconic old clubbing brand like Godskitchen, especially when it's a 25th anniversary show at Amnesia in Ibiza. I need to make sure I stay true to my current sound, while throwing in memorable tracks and moments from back in the day. I need to make sure those classics I do play aren't obvious ones that are peak time and the ones everyone else will think of playing on the night. I need to place those records carefully, depending on how long it takes for the room to fill up (the club was packed on this occasion!), and how the energy is going. And I need to be considerate of which DJ is following me, and also the general flow of the night on a whole, while marrying the expectations of the people on the dancefloor. In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “Underworld”. “Underworld” was formed in 1987 and consisted of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. As a duo they created synthpop music. However in 1990 the group became a trio and add Darren Emerson. At this point they went from synthpop to progressive house and techno. In 1996 they had their biggest mainstream hit “Born Slippy.Nuxx”, which was on the “Trainspotting” soundtrack. Take a listen here. “Born Slippy.Nuxx” captured the emotional and human element of the characters in “Trainspotting”. The use of vocals in EDM was new at the time because EDM tracks were largely instrumental. In addition, this track was a fusion and trance with its driving, repetitive. synth beats. This fusion blurred the lines with the genres. All of these things combined assisted with the evolution of EDM. That's it for this week's Vinyl's from the past; now let's get back to more music. Mousse T.'s first step in the music industry was playing keyboards for the relatively under-the-radar band Fun Key B, where he began his experimentation with synth- pop, and funk infused sounds. Hungry for more, Mousse T. was also already forging his solo career, opening his own recording studio and DJing on Hannover's growing club scene. Along with his own productions, Mousse T.'s writing and producing credits read like a who's who of the music industry, having worked with artists such as Roy Ayers, Byron Stingily, Andreya Triana to name a few. With all his hard work solidifying the foundations for his career, he took the plunge in 1993 and launched Peppermint Jam records, a pioneering label still renowned for its unique uplifting house music and melodic acid jazz. By the late 90's Mousse T. was a household name, dominating the charts with releases such as ‘Horny' and Tom Jones' ‘Sex Bomb'. This success was followed by an Ivor-Novello Award, Grammy Award nomination and three studio albums, most recently releasing Where Is The Love in 2018, a charismatic and sophisticated reminder of his gifted abilities. His other recent achievements include appearing as a judge on DSDS (Germany's Got Talent) and producing film soundtracks for a number of German titles. With no signs of slowing down, Mousse T. continues to be one of the most prolific producers in the game, putting his signature shizzle touch on tracks like Mike Dunn ́s „If I can't git down“, Horse Meat Disco ́s „Love if you need it“, Flight Facilities ft. Channel Tres „Lights up“, Selace ́s „Hooked on your lovin ́“ and Davie ́sTestify" „ to Spiller ́s „Groovejet“, as well as releasing his own productions constantly, DJing across the globe with residencies at parties like Glitterbox and continuing to uphold the legacy of his own label, Peppermint Jam. Mousse T. is currently residing on the Glitterbox roster with Colluded Management. His recent gigs include playing at Hi Ibiza, Viper Room Los Angeles, Cavo Paradiso Mykonos, Amnesia Ibiza, Pacha Ibiza, Creamfields Festival, Cocoon Club Frankfurt, Loveparade, Rex Club Paris and Montreux Jazz Festival, with his live band. BIO As dance music tends to deliver younger bright stars every year, here's a prodigy the world surely will be talking about. 17-year old DJ/producer Curbi isn't even new to the game, he has already making tunes for a couple of years now. For sure, he's the talk of the town, early 2015, after signing a deal with Spinnin' Records and MusicAllStars management at the tender age of sixteen. But the signs were all there; a young lad from Essex, UK, making music in his bedroom, breaking borders as he created a house sound of his own. After Dutch tastemaker Oliver Heldens got hold of his track 'Discharge', it didn't take long for Curbi to get signed to Heldens' home label Spinnin' Records. The story is enchanting. 'Discharge' getting hundreds of thousands SoundCloud plays in mere days, getting picked up by the biggest DJs out there, remaining in the Top 10 of Beatport's main chart for 28 days (!) while the video is now counting over 2 million Youtube views and over 2.5 million SoundCloud plays. Not bad for a debut, the buzz around Curbi is only becoming larger by the day. After releasing his first mixtape early June, which scored 125,000 plays within a week, his second single 'Rubber' comes out on Spinnin' Records. And surely, this is a worthy follow-up, a gem for the clubs, including Curbi's characteristic raw bass lines, adding tension with some deep synth chords creeping up on you during the breakdown. Pete Tong can't wait to premier it in his BBC radio show, while artists like Diplo, Oliver Heldens, Martin Solveig, David Guetta, Michael Calfan as well as Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike give it full support. Genre crossing, you could say, which is exactly what Curbi does with his bass heavy house music - his sound hits a nerve everywhere. Summer 2015 also sees Curbi make his DJ debut, playing at Martin Solveig's event My House in Pacha Ibiza - not bad for a show debut. After that, the young Brit sets on doing more performances, while also venturing into some collabs, releasing the exciting club tune 'Hoohah' together with fellow Brit Fox Stevenson (a track getting picked up by jocks like Hardwell, Diplo and Showtek), followed in October by the release of 'Butterfly Effect', a collab with Dutch duo Bougenvilla. In short, Curbi is going through a rollercoaster ride in 2015, concluded with a personal 'thank you' to his fans when he releases the free downloadable 'Fraternité EP', including three full tracks by the youngster. 2016 sees Curbi continue living up to all the promises. His first release '51' already meets widespread DJ support (including Hardwell, Calvin Harris, Oliver Heldens, R3hab and Porter Robinson) before it's officially released, reaching #2 on Beatport's Electro House chart. The follow-up to this, the mighty club tune 'Triple Six', Curbi's first release on Tiësto's label Musical Freedom, reaches the same height, getting support from the label boss as well as DJs Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Hardwell, Oliver Heldens, Calvin Harris and Martin Garrix. May 2016 also sees Curbi play his first show in his home country, performing at the DOORN Records Label Night in London, while the young Brit also gears up to play key events across Europe in summer 2016, including Creamfields, Amnesia Ibiza, Myseryland and Parookaville.
