Today's guest is David Roche—elite ultrarunner, 2024 Leadville 100 champion and course record holder, coach to some of the sport's top athletes, co-author of The Happy Runner, and co-founder of Some Work All Play with his brilliant wife Megan. But beyond the accolades, David is someone who radiates joy, purpose, and perspective—especially in a sport that can sometimes take itself way too seriously. We talk about why running doesn't have to “matter” to matter, how to set big scary goals without tying your worth to them, and why silliness and love might just be your best training plan. Whether you're toeing the line at your first 5K or dreaming of a hundred-miler, I promise—this episode will leave your heart a little fuller and your inner critic a little quieter.

There are many different was or techniques to overcome dark thoughts when running a race, a long or a fast run. I speek mostly from my own perspective and what helps me. Most important is to mentally prepare yourself for the race. You'll find more on the topic in the previous episode of The Happy Runner. If you are well prepared, chances are that you may not drift away into the dark. At the end of this episode I also give my thoughts, why we get dark thoughts during races. If you want to get more tips or you need a training plan for yourself you'll find all of it and more at the Run and Smile webapge
Vic Owens, aka The Happy Runner, is the fastest person to complete the Monarch's Way, has tackled Cobain Events' The Tunnel three times, taken on The Bridge Ultra, run more than 30 miles on her drive and 60 miles around her back garden, and does it all wearing no shoes. This barefoot, vegan runner, has the mental strength most of us can only dream of - and she's even trained herself out of hallucinations. Mind you, she lets on that her biggest fear is water. Even the toughest among us get scared. Listen as I ask Vic about all these challenges, and learn why her son was the reason for her to go vegan.
You know I'm not much into review but to be honest I was intrigued when approached by Mike from Oladance to test their earbuds or as they call the wearable stereo. So after more than a year of running without music or listening to podcasts from fellow creators I decided to try running with music again. If you want to find out more about the wearable stereo from Oladance and my thoughts on the product ... well, you can hear all you need to know in this episode of The Happy Runner podcast. If you haven't thought much about power as it relates to your running, you're not alone. As runners, power isn't something that we often consider in our training. To help us understand power, we have David Roche with us today. David Roche is an elite trail runner, author, and running coach. He is a two-time USATF trail national champion and the 2014 Sub-Ultra Trail Runner of the Year. David publishes regularly in Trail Runner Magazine and wrote the book, The Happy Runner, with his wife Megan. Although the subject of power and mechanical output may sound daunting, never fear! David breaks down the concepts in a way that makes it understandable, approachable, and easy to apply to your running year-round. We discuss: The definition of power and mechanical output, both in theory and in practicality for runners Why power is a bigger limiter for non-elite athletes How most benefits of developing power come from very short work intervals Why maintaining power is your key to longevity in the sport The success of the Norwegian system using power development Five way to consistently improve your own power David is insightful and enthusiastic when it comes to discussing the technical aspects of running. You're bound to learn something new to apply to your own training! Thank You InsideTracker! This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker, one of the most reputable blood testing companies in the world. They were founded in 2009 by aging, genetics, and biometrics scientists to help you analyze your body's data and get a firm idea of how well you're responding to training. Understanding your body's biomarkers, from stress hormones to testosterone to Vitamin D, can help you figure out if you're over-training, under-training, optimally training, or if you have a health issue that might be affecting your running. But the best part is that they give you personalized optimal ranges for each of these biomarkers and a host of ways to improve these markers through diet, lifestyle, or exercise changes. I've gotten several Ultimate tests from them and the process is simple, easy, and very eye-opening if you haven't done a deep dive on your biomarkers yet. Of all the investments you can make in your running, this one is like getting a detailed checkup or regularly scheduled maintenance for your internal physiology. I scheduled another Ultimate test for myself soon and it'll be interesting to compare with the test I got in February. Get yours today! Thank You Athletic Greens! It's time to take a review of this year and make plans for next year. Not only regarding the Happy Runner podcast but also my running plans. So I took some time to check on the goals I had for this year and I'm proud to say that I mostly achieved them. More for the podcast as for my running, but that was due to a medical situation, so I had to change my plans. For next year my path as a podcaster and runner is planned. I just need to follow what works best for me and the results will come.
Numerous studies suggest that consuming caffeine could help you run faster or longer and burn more fat while running. So there really are benefits of caffeine for runners. But not all runners respond to caffeine in the same way. Some even experience jitters, headache's, upset stomach or insomnia. As with everything you should try using caffeine products first in training. In this episode of the Happy Runner podcast you will also hear, how I use caffeinated products.
In this episode of The Happy Runner podcast I host Kaylee, a Swiss - South African girl running through the UK to chat about her running story. We talk about benefits from working with a running coach and why she enjoys being a member of a running group.
All tunners need some kind of mental support. We find the most support from our friends and family. But it the end it's up to us. We need to take care of our own mental support. We are all different, so try out what you think could work for you and you will find just the right combination of things that keep you motivated to go out running.

In this episode of the Happy Runner podcast I talk about marathon race tactics. How to set your race tactics, what is important to run a strong marathon, when and how to practice your marathon race tactics. We often see books for either beginner runner's or the elites, but the largest portion of runners is somewhere in between. This is why authors Anji Andrews and Martin Yelling decided to write Running in the Midpack, How to be a Strong, Successful, and Happy Runner, which is a book for the midpack runner. Midpackers train hard and have big goals, so this book aims to help them progress in their running. Midpackers also have jobs and families, so the book the book tries to give tips on incorporating best practice into busy lives. There are 6 chapters and a conclusion:1. The midpack runner2. Psychology3. Whole body health4. Training5. Nutrition6. Race day7. ConclusionIn this episode of the podcast we had the pleasure of interviewing both authors, and hope that you enjoy the conversation as much as we did. Thanks to Bloomsbury for providing review copies of the book, and also for helping to put us in touch with the authors. If you are interested in getting a copy of the book, it can be found directly on the Bloomsbury website here: https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/running-in-the-midpack-9781472973405/ Any feedback or suggestions on this review or any of our other podcast episodes would be greatly welcomed. In January whilst most of us were either hiding in the house, warm and cosy or getting back to some form of post-Christmas binge training our guest this week was doing something extraordinary. We're joined by Vic Owens, better known as The Happy Runner. Vic chose to run 1000 miles in January. Now, if you're like us that may take you a little time to compute, 31 days and an ultra-marathon covered in every single one of them. Welcome to the world of The Happy Runner. Vic amazes us, she'll amaze you too. Listen in to find out what drove her to run what would be a brilliant annual mileage total………in one month!! Vic, who started running seriously in 2016, quickly realised that running on tarmac wasn't for her but after finding trail running she well and truly caught the bug. Shifting through the distances in a flash and choosing to enter events most of us would baulk at. An advocate for barefoot running Vic gives us a fascinating insight into how minimalist footwear (or sometime no footwear) is her ride of choice. Food for thought for your hosts! It's an inspirational chat as we explore lots of Vic's own motivations. Incredibly Vic reckons she is just doing what anyone could do. Vic's fastest known time on the 625 mile Monarchs Way might give you an idea that she really is a bit of a wonder woman. If you need to little shove, or your mojo has currently gone amiss this episode will give you a jolt. Next on Vic's agenda is the small matter of the 250 mile 'Lon Las Ultra Marathon' in Wales, another of Mark Cockbain's wicked events! Vic is an Ambassador for Active Root - https://activeroot.co.uk/ Some of Vic's fav events are Cockbain Events - http://www.cockbainevents.com/ Follow Vic's adventures on her Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/the_happy_runnernw/ For a last chance to enter our Pyllon Exposure race place competition head over to Young Hearts Run Free Twitter and Instagram to enter.

Finding your strong isn't always easy, but if you're familiar with SWAP Coaches David and Megan Roche, you are probably familiar with their infectious optimism. David and Megan are both coaches of their company, SWAP- Some Work, All Play that David founded in 2013. The powerhouse couple coaches some of the top trail runners and obstacle course athletes in the world. Their coaching speaks for itself with over 17 US National Championships won, athlete appearances on Team USA 14 Times, Spartan World Champions, and more. "For us, it's all about finding your strong. We want athletes to really embrace the athletic strength-based nature of being an endurance athlete. What that means in practice is that everyone's strong looks so different. So you can't go on looks, you can't even go necessarily on what you're seeing in the mirror because that is so distorted. And it's not analogous to anything with performance or growth or anything. What we really want is someone to be "Ok, I want to be a boss! I want to be strong!" And that's how you eat, that's how you train. What we're there for is supporting that with gentle affirmation that you're enough as you are, you are perfect the way you are and things like that, but then also coming in with science. " -David Roche Megan is the 2016 USATF Trail Runner of the Year at the ultra and sub-ultra distances. She is a five-time national champion, a North American Mountain Running Champion, and a six-time member of Team USA. She graduated from Duke University with a degree in Neuroscience and received her M.D. from Stanford Medical School. At Stanford, she is doing a PhD in epidemiology, focused on population health and genetics for athletes. Megan started coaching with SWAP in 2016 with the premise that she could help athletes learn to love the process of training, embrace their inner ninja, and recover using a Taco Tuesday approach. David is the 2014 USATF Trail Runner of the Year at the sub-ultra distance. He is a two-time national champion and three-time member of Team USA. He graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Environmental Science and received a master's degree and law degree from Duke University. He also is a writer for Trail Runner Magazine. The two also wrote a book, the Happy Runner. I had David on the podcast once before going all into their book. David and Megan's book really resonated with me because it's about being a happy athlete. This year, the couple started the SWAP podcast which happens to be one of my favorites. This episode is packed with energy, fun, and great learning about secrets to happy coupledom, eating lots of food, self-acceptance, how to deal with quitting, death, talent and so much more! David and Megan's message to you is: YOU ARE SO LOVED AND PERFECT JUST AS YOU ARE. YES, JUST AS YOU ARE RIGHT NOW. AS YOU ARE READING THIS. AND AS YOU GROW AND CHANGE, YOU'LL BE PERFECT TOO. THIS IS ADDIE DOG TALKING. But David and Megan agree with this statement 10000%. YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!!! I'm really excited about today's guest, David Roche. I feel like he is a kindred spirit, especially after reading his awesome book, the Happy Runner that he co-authored with his wife (who is also an incredible human), Megan Roche. Author is just one of the hats that David wears. He started his own coaching company in 2013 called SWAP - Some Work, All Play where he and Megan coach some of the top trail runners and obstacle course athletes in the world. Their coaching speaks for itself with over 17 US National Championships won, athlete appearances on Team USA 14 Times, Spartan World Champions, and more. David is also well accomplished as a runner as a two-time national champion, a three-time member of Team USA, and was Sub-Ultra Trail Runner of the Year in 2014. He also is a writer for Trail Runner Magazine. If that's not enough, he is also a former lawyer. David and Megan's book really resonated with me because it's about being a happy athlete. We talked about important topics like sport as a celebration instead of a measuring stick of how good of a person you are, we talked about having a healthy relationship with results, we talked about how to have more self-acceptance, and even contemplating mortality. I think you'll get a lot out of this podcast feel like you're walking, running, or riding away with your cup and your heart more full. Topics Discussed in the Podcast removing pressure with authenticity (as a writer and an athlete) getting away from looking at achievement as a benchmark for success Imposter syndrome how to cultivate more self-acceptance Dissociating with results how to view competition in a healthy way positive affirmations and mantras to help you enjoy the process more viewing the human as a whole when it comes to coaching why training more hours won't necessarily make you faster fun stories about some of the athletes he coaches Listen Now Resources SWAP Running Website Follow David on Twitter Follow David and ADDIEDOG on Instagram Get the book: The Happy Runner ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Support the Show If you would like to support the growth of my show, I'd love your contribution on.
