David Roche is producer of one of the world's most popular podcasts, “Some Work, All Play,” with his cohost and wife, Megan. He's also a contender to win the Western States 100 Miler at the end of June. That's a rare combination. His back story is even more amazing. A little more than a year ago, Roche was seriously injured when struck by a car while bicycling a favorite road near Boulder, CO. At that time, the Duke Law School grad and ultramarathon coach had never even attempted a 100-mile. But last summer he broke a longstanding course record in the Leadville Trail 100, and several months later scored a convincing win (in torrid temps) in the Javelina 100.A fan of “Hamilton” the musical (“I'm not givin' away my shot”) and Simone Biles (“F___ around and find out”), Roche professes to believe that almost everyone's “amazing” and should reach high for their personal goals. Megan is both his coach, a champion ultra runner on her own, and an M.D. and PhD graduate from Stanford University. Every week, their pod covers the latest research findings about running, as they attempt to “science the sh__” out of endurance performance. You can learn more about David & Megan Roche at their SWAPrunning.com website, or at David's Instagram page.David's quest to win Western States has been chronicled here in a YouTube series by video producer Cody Bare.Key Sections Of The Podcast0:00Introduction to David Roche: The Rise of an Ultra Runner10:33David's Background: Life, Family, and Coaching13:43The Dynamic Duo: David and Megan Roche16:47The Birth of a Podcast: Authenticity and Popularity19:44Language and Honesty: The Explicit Nature of the Podcast22:37Uplifting Messages: The Importance of Kindness25:55Science vs. Intuition: Balancing Training Approaches28:42Training Insights: The Art of Adaptation31:44Overcoming Challenges: The Impact of a Serious Accident34:39Life Lessons: Embracing Mortality and Racing37:43The Athletic Journey: From Football to Ultra Running38:46The Journey to Natural Running40:13Genetics and Athletic Performance43:01Rapid Rise in Ultra Running47:35Mental Resilience and Self-Confidence51:32The Competitive Landscape of Ultra Running54:28Key Factors for Success at Western States56:58Reflections on the Evolution of Running01:01:09The State of the Sport of Running01:03:53Wishes for the FutureWHERE TO FIND "RUNNING: STATE OF THE SPORT"Use your smartphone to download podcast apps from Apple, Spotify, Pandora, or YouTube Podcasts. Embarking on an ultramarathon journey while juggling the roles of a wife, mother, and entrepreneur is no small feat. Yet, Beth McKenzie, co-founder of WYN Republic and an ultramarathon enthusiast, navigates this complex landscape with grace and resilience. In our conversation, Beth delves into her rigorous training schedules, recounts overcoming obstacles like a stress fracture, and reveals how she strategically aligns her athletic ambitions with her responsibilities at work and home. Her unwavering dedication to running not only highlights her passion for the sport but also serves as a testament to her remarkable ability to maintain balance in all facets of her life. Beth recounts her experience at the 2022 California International Marathon where she narrowly missed qualifying for the US Olympic Trials. Her decision to step back from the pursuit of Olympic qualification reflects a deep understanding of her body's limits and the realization that longevity in her career is paramount. She is gearing up for this year's 100K Tarawera Ultramarathon, with guidance from renowned coaches David and Megan Roche. She sees this participation as a way to tap into her love for running. She's not out to grab the top spot. Instead, she's in it to push her boundaries, discover what she's truly capable of, and learn how her body responds to intense challenges. Tune into this episode of "Run Fast, Run Forever" for a closer look at Beth's journey, her training, and lifestyle. Learn the principles of balance and sustainability, along with the relentless pursuit of personal bests in the world of long-distance running. Quotes "As far as why I'm running, I think just now into my mid-40s, it's the kind of thing that I can do the most efficiently and the best way to get some training, but also, for me, a way to still be able to challenge myself mentally and physically each day." (03:09 | Beth McKenzie) "As soon as I found running in my late 20s, I knew it was something I wanted to do for life. For me, even in phases of my life where I'm not feeling competitive or not wanting to go on a start line, I'm still going to be getting out every day to run on the trails, to just decompress, to get away from everything else and just be on my own as well." (04:23 | Beth McKenzie) "I honestly aspire to be a hobby jogger. I think that's a great thing. It's that longevity. It's having that in your life on a daily basis to give you joy." (08:21 | Beth McKenzie) "My real wish though, is that I had a lever coming back from pregnancy and during pregnancy. You could just sell levers to pregnant women because seriously, the amount it could have helped me in those stages of life is ridiculous. While you're pregnant, taking off some of the weight, having that freedom to run and then afterwards returning to running. But while you're still carrying some extra weight, it would have been so valuable." (32:29 | Beth McKenzie) "I think that's one of the exciting things about just having the type of company that we do is like, just the ability to help people is like the name of the game for us, right? Whether it's someone coming back from a stress fracture or wanting to get back from fitness post-pregnancy, like my wife just gave birth to our third child a week ago. So even using it for her just to kind of get back to her quote unquote fitness and doing what she loves to do again. She loves the gym and to do gym workouts and things like that. But just to be able to move your body again post-pregnancy is really important." Exercise. Whether you're an athlete or just depend on activity for a little dose of sanity, the pregnancy and postpartum periods can knock you sideways and make you feel estranged from your own body. My fun, fierce and fabulous friend from Colorado Springs, Lauren Puretz, recently completed Javelina Jundred 2023, placing fourth. She's an amazing all-around human who works full-time as OB/GYN, is a mom of two, and an ultra runner who also placed first overall at the Sawatch Ascent 50k this summer, a race she entered on a whim as a training run. In this conversation, we talk about: How she manages her time to get it all done How her medical training and being “sleep deprived and miserable” prepared her to run ultras What she does when the “I can't do this” thoughts enter her brain Breaking down training into one checkbox at a time Why you don't have to be perfect Why she does not cycle sync, and what she does instead The strength training every woman should be doing The mantra that gets her out of tough places How working with coach, Megan Roche, has helped Words of wisdom for those who struggle with self-doubt Connect with Lauren @lauren1642 Connect with your host: Coach Carrie @carriejobradley
Stefanie Flippin and Matt Chittim welcome one of good friends, Dr. Megan Roche, to the show. Megan is one of best runners and coaches in trail running and an experienced researcher at Stanford University. The three of us have a conversation around the current state of trail and ultrarunning, the decision making process for post college athletes about potentially joining the sport, and how some of the best runners in the sport (Dylan Bowman, Katie Schide, Drew Holman, Tori McCann, Adam Merry, and many others) focused on other sports in college and why that may have helped them in their running journeys.
Today on the podcast we are joined by two legends: Megan Roche, M.D. and Jacob Puzey. In this episode we discuss what marathoners can learn from ultra runners and what closely held beliefs in the marathon road running community aren't necessarily gospel in the ultra world. Here are some topics we discuss: Running on pavement versus various types of trail Lengths of long runs and/or weekend doubles Embracing fun and exciting challenges Effort focused versus time/pace focused Nutrition on the run Megan Roche, M.D.: Megan was the 2016 USATF Trail Runner of the Year at the ultra and sub-ultra distances. She is a five-time national champion, a North American Mountain Running Champion, and a six-time member of Team USA. She graduated from Duke University with a degree in Neuroscience and received her M.D. from Stanford Medical School. Megan and her husband, David Roche, created the Some Work All Play Adventure Team where they coach some of the best athletes in the world and dedicated amateur runners. Jacob Puzey: Jacob coaches runners from all over the world of all ages and abilities — from newbies to national champions — and loves helping his athletes reach new heights in their running performance. Jacob is revered for his unique ability to understand family and work demands and address those challenges within a training cycle. Jacob is just as accomplished as a runner. As part of a marathon buildup in 2011, Jacob signed up for a trail 50K, accidentally won that race, and has since set numerous course records on both road and trail courses throughout North America. Hey Running Friends!Today's episode is about using your rate of perceived effort/exertion (RPE) to gauge how easy or hard a particular run is. When the purpose of your run is to go easy, this can help you stay in that lane. Even if you are "supposed" to run a certain pace for that run, sometimes due to circumstances (fatigue, weather, sickness, etc.) we are actually not running easy. This scale allows us to do that easy (or hard) run based on how we are feeling...not tech. That is not to say paces are not important. I run most of my runs with a pace range in mind. RPE is just another tool to use in your training. Find out how I use it today. You can get 30% off your purchase at The Amino Company. Check out Perform and Heal. For the first time in history, just over 50% of all races are run by women. While women are leading in the number of participants, research on women in sport is still stubbornly behind the guys'. We know that women and men perform differently, carry and use fat differently, as well as react to pain differently. Typically, men are bigger, stronger, and faster, until you get to the ultra distance, where women can actually break the tape first. On today's Run to the Top, Dr Megan Roche, 5-time national trail champion and Stanford researcher explores the science behind the biological differences between men and women in endurance running. And this is not just a show for the women runners. Guys, you'll want to listen up as well if you want to know why the women are getting better and better. When the world shut down this past year, sports came to a halt as well. Without the sport they love, what did the day to day life of these athletes look like? How did athletes adapt and find new ways to train? Most importantly, what did altered training regimens mean for their mental health? In this episode, hosts Abby Converse and Floranne Carroll break down the impact of the pandemic on high-level athletes. They are joined by fellow Stanford student-athlete Amelia Smith, beach volleyball Olympian Lauren Fendrick, and future water polo Olympian and Stanford alumna Gurpreet Sohi. The hosts will also discuss a Stanford study on effects of the pandemic on the well-being of high-level athletes through Strava, an organization that connects athletes around the world, tracking their training. Dr. Megan Roche, a researcher who conducted the joint study this fall, stops by to share her findings and explore the study's impacts on future training in collegiate and professional athletics.
