In this conversation, Andrew Cohn talks a second time with Martin Rutte, one of the pioneers in the field of spirituality in business, and more recently the author of the book, Project Heaven on Earth. Martin begins the conversation by sharing the three key questions that each of us can consider in order to begin to create heaven on earth—as each of us defines it. He also reflects back Andrew‘s answers to these questions and what that might mean for him. Martin describes his book as a blueprint of discovering what heaven on earth means for us, and the steps each of us can take to begin to bring it to life. He describes the seven gateways to heaven on earth, and shares stories that bring these powerful themes and ideas to life. He challenges us to consider where we might be “out“ of heaven and earth with ourselves. Martin talks about his belief that humanity is at a fork in the road, and it is by tapping into these bigger personal questions that we can navigate in the right direction.

We have been conditioned to think that spirituality is not something we could bring to work. It's something we leave at the door, never to be spoken about in the halls of business and professionalism. But as we'll see later, this is a huge missed opportunity for all stakeholders involved. In this episode, we are joined by Martin Rutte, a pioneer in the intersection of business and spirituality. Martin shares his journey into this transformative space, revealing a pivotal moment at an Indian monastery that sparked a realization about the absence of spirituality in his life. However, as Rutte navigated the resistance, he discovered that spirituality at work holds the potential to enhance authenticity, trust, and engagement. The conversation unfolds to explore the positive impact of framing spirituality as an ongoing inquiry rather than a set answer, highlighting the importance of creating a safe and permissible space for individuals to explore and express their spiritual dimensions in the workplace. Tune in for more!

He helps you discover what Heaven on Earth is for you and what simple, easy, concrete action you can take in the next 24 hours to begin making that real.
Do you think it's possible to change the world in which we live? Maybe so, but how can that happen? We see devastating stories on the news constantly. It seems our world is filled with tragedies – violence, corruption, and endless suffering. This can easily make us feel helpless and hopeless. Yet, there's an innate desire, a profound longing in each of us, for a world that works. We feel we want to do something, deep in our hearts, deep in our souls, which will actually take our planet to its next evolutionary level. As we enter this third millennium, our job is the conscious creation of Humanity's New Story, namely, Heaven on Earth. Listen as today's guest Martin Rutte elaborates on his vision and how his organization is going about achieving this goal through Project Heaven On Earth. Martin guides us through and asks us to contemplate three questions – and through those questions, we can begin to imagine and visualize a world of possibilities. Martin is an international speaker and consultant, and president of Livelihood, a creative leadership management consulting firm, in Santa Fe, NM. He is the co-author of “Chicken Soup for the Soul at Work.” For more than 15 years he has been exploring people's vision for the kind of world they long for – Project Heaven on Earth. His new book is “Project Heaven on Earth: The 3 Simple Questions that Will Help You Change the World … Easily.” He shows us that change really is possible! Info: www.projectheavenonearth.com
Back in the 1990s, Martin Rutte earned his most prominent byline co-writing one of the famous Chicken Soup for the Soul books, which focused on incorporating spirituality into the workplace. Now residing in Charlottetown, PEI, Rutte is again working on a spiritual level—and the scale is far greater than just offices. A sought-after speaker and consultant, Rutte's newest endeavour, Project Heaven on Earth,_ translates the concept of tikkun olam to the wider world, questioning why humans can't create greater peace with themselves and their communities. While the project launched years ago, his book of the same name (2018) is especially timely now, as Jews move on from Yom Kippur and begin thinking about how they can better themselves and the world in the coming year. Rutte spoke with The CJN Daily earlier about his work, but also about how Jews in his home province struggled to keep high holiday services going during the recent post-tropical storm Fiona. Hear how he met a stranded American Jewish tourist on the island. All these struggles only underscore the importance of his messages of perseverence, altruism and faith. Imagine a world where our visions for growth are shared freely among employees and citizens of communities and nations so that we can co-create our ideal future. Martin Rutte is fascinated with the development of vision for individuals, companies and communities. He was once a management consultant for companies like Apple and Sony and was a successful seminar leader. He co-authored Chicken Soup for the Soul at Work: Stories of Courage, Compassion and Creativity in the Workplace with Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Tim Clauss and Maida Rogerson. He envisions groups of people sharing and discussing their deeper, spiritual lives in the workplace to inspire growth, bringing us all closer to our shared ‘heaven on earth'. To align yourself with your heaven on earth, ask yourself these three questions: Recall a time when you experienced heaven on earth. What was going on? Imagine you have in your hand right now, a magic wand. And with that magic wand, you can have heaven on earth. What's heaven on earth for you? What simple, easy, concrete step will you take in the next 24 hours to have more of that. For more information, go to www.projectheavenonearth.com. Episode 120 of Live Authentically features Martin Rutte, president of Livelihood, a management consulting firm. He is also the co-author of “Chicken Soup for the Soul at Work,” a New York Times Business Bestseller. In addition, for over 15 years with his Project Heaven on Earth, Martin has been learning what makes people human, and what they envision their dream world to be.Martin tells Pam that he lives authentically by seeing what's true for him. He says that he sees where he can leverage the difference he makes in the world.“I have to have time for laughter, puns and playing with people, and some intellectual stimulation. I like innovative, unique thinkers,” Martin said.In addition to that, Martin explains how he tries to be the person who will tell people the things they don't always want to hear– the negative stuff– but in a nice way. Constructive criticism overall, and we all know this can only help us grow. Martin says his goal with telling people the negative stuff is “to say that with some heart and soul and yet still get the message across.”Martin believes that the negative stuff should be told, but in a way that invites the person to continue the conversation.“You start with the positive, then you go to the negative and then you give another option,” Martin said. “... I like that a lot because it puts the no inside of a yes. It puts the no inside of forwarding the relationship.”For Martin, forwarding the relationship is one of his life purposes with his Project Heaven on Earth, which focuses on bringing people into the sphere of seeing their own personal heaven on Earth.“I'm fascinated, Pam, by the idea of the soul's dream we have for the kind of life and work and relationship and nation and world that we want,” Martin said, “And the idea popped into my head, ‘Oh, you mean Heaven on Earth.'”For Martin, the last 30 years have been about trying to evoke the “Heaven-on-Earth-knowing” within others. He mentions how it's so much easier to focus on hell that he instead wanted to know what heaven looked like to everyone else.To learn more about Martin Rutte and Project Heaven on Earth, listen to Episode 120 of the Live Authentically podcast or visit his website here. • I'm in my second season, so my first season of Heal Into Happy is all about the different modalities that I've utilized to help me heal into happiness, and then I was contacted by a guy named Martin Rutte, he lives in Canada, and he has things flagged going all over the Internet, when anyone talks about Heaven on Earth. And so some of my first season of Heal Into Happy I talk about that. And so that got flagged for him and he reached out to me. He is a writer of Chicken Soup for the Soul, and just very famous in the world of being on different shows and things like that, he's written a book about Heaven On Earth, and so he likes to become friends with people that are joining what he's doing and hearing about how they're contributing. And if I had ever heard of him... Which I hadn't, and so it was really cool. I actually bought his book about Creating Heaven On Earth, and I asked him to be on my podcast, and he asked me the three questions that are in his book about creating heaven on earth that I asked you. And at the end, he says, What are you going to do to continue this? And I said, Martin, I'm so inspired by you. I'm going to have a whole second season that I bring on all of the people that are nearest to dear to me, that inspire me, and we're going to explore this to just keep co-creating, to keep bringing it into everybody's awareness. (4:11)• I feel like with Sophia Code and all of the things that I've learned around that, and then just thinking about Jesus and everything Jesus did, I feel like that was his message, that we all are powerful, that we can all heal. He inspiring people by what he was able to do and letting us know that we're no different, and so if we have Christ's consciousness running through us, which I believe that we do, it just makes sense... And I feel God is so excited and blessing me in so many different ways for following this path of making this part of my life's journey, passion, work, project to just do. And it's like all of these things are finding me like Martin, to cheer me on. Like, you're on the right path. (6:38)• Yes, acknowledging what we already have allows us to receive more, just by being present, I feel like that is such a huge missing puzzle piece with everybody on technology and... Go, go, go, go, go. It's like people wake up in the morning and the alarm clock goes off and then it's just like the day controls them, and so having a presence, to wake up with gratitude and then just being in the moment, spreading the jam on your kids peanut butter and jelly or something, and just being so appreciative that you have that food to provide for them as they go off to school. And I bless Stella's school and have all of the angels come around and stay with her all day, and I mean, I feel like it's a beautiful thing, presence... And really being aware of each now moment is such a gift and something that we do really well together. I feel like that is one of the things that has helped us manifest all of the things that we've desired. (10:28)• That's so true, because you do have to have your cup filled first before you can give that to anybody else, so... I love that. Well, last week we talked about mirror work, where we talked about that in the mindset Chick Podcast. We talked about doing mirror work and going into the mirror every morning after you brush your teeth, looking at yourself and really finding something you love about yourself and getting in the habit of looking at yourself and saying, I love you, and picking out the beauty within yourself, your outer appearance, your inner world, and instead of criticizing, changing that habit to just send love to yourself. (16:34)• It's really, really cool to make a decision to spend five minutes and get something that you have a tactile experience with, deciding to peel an orange where it's just you and the orange. And how does it feel to peel it? And what does the peel smell like? And what does the orange smell like? And when you decide to put it in your mouth, just taking one little orange slice and tasting it. I feel like God put us here on this mystery school Earth to have our senses be explored and appreciated. When we're an etheric Angel we don't get to taste the orange. And so really having an experience in the present moment where you're utilizing all of your senses, that's a huge mantra for me. If I'm just discombobulated and I'm doing too many things, deciding to make that cup of tea and have the experience of making it. How does it taste? Enjoying the warmth of it, all of that stuff that you can do that really helps you get totally enveloped in the present moment, where in my opinion, what I found, that's where you feel God. You can't be stuck in your mind in some weird loop and really feel the presence of God, God is in those moments where you're enjoying this magnificent body that he's created to give you all the essential and physical feelings. (22:09) ABOUT LARK ALLEN:Lark is a wife, mom and explorer of ways to appreciate life and all the adventures it brings. • Now, let me tell you what's happened since I've come up with all of these, with these three questions, over the years, I've seen what I call the gateways or when you ask these three questions over and over and over and over, thousands of times what I began to see was patterns in the answers... What I call the heaven on earth gateways. And so what are they? One is internal, there are people who say, the way you create heaven on earth is by creating within the more heaven on earth, within the mark will show up out in the world. So these people go, they take art courses, dance courses, anything to have that divine self come up, or they go to therapy to clean up hurts and traumas in the past, all of that, so they can have more evident earth internally. And we have people who say heaven on earth is about relationships with myself, with another, with others, with God. There are people who say heaven on earth is about living a value, love, harmony, joy. Those people say, the more of that big value in the world, the more they will be having on earth than there are people who say, Well, what about the sufferings in the world? So for them, the gateway is and suffering, not make it better, end it. (3:40)• Well, and now let me go to the next piece which is, let me talk about some of the examples of what people are doing, because I find that by thinking about the examples, the actual physical, tangible examples in the world, it inspires people. So let's start simple. A woman in Hawaii, Susan Alina Fryer. I did a seminar in Hawaii and she saw, can I do it as well? What do you do? I teach people how to grow micro-greens, which are little green plants that grow in about 10 days, and then you cut them and you blend them up and you drink them, and they're healthy drink. And I said, Oh, okay, so what's heaven on earth for you? And I don't have her exact words, but it was something like to recreate the Garden of Eden, and I went, That's it. Don't you get it, what you're doing with teaching, your program is helping to re-create the garden... And she went, Oh my God, you're right, you're right. And so she's now embedded in every email that she sends out, her definition of Heaven On Earth, she asked question number two, imagine you have a magic wand, and with it you can have heaven on earth. What's heaven on earth for you? And she talks about recreating the garden. (7:18)• Let me give you a couple more because you see the range, as we go up. We have a woman in Austria, Elizabeth, who said, Oh well, I know my project, because I was asking what's your Heaven On Earth project? And she said, Well, Austria's a heaven on earth, and I said, Whoa, well, yes, because Martin it's simple. And she taught me the value of simple, I don't know what your simple is, but you do for her. Simple was Austria's Heaven On Earth Nation. She's taken a copy of my book Project Heaven On Earth to the President of the country. She's a Catholic, she organized on Halloween a session at the local monastery where people came in, they got a little magic wand and they went around to different stations around the monastery, some of which asked the three have a questions that I just asked you, obviously in German. She went to the local priest who asked the three questions in one of his sermons, and this woman is... She gave away for Christmas one year, shoes that were engraved in German with Heaven On Earth, so that when people walk in the snow, they leave this pattern. (12:27)• He has a new program called Africa, a Heaven On Earth Continent. Wow. And if we have a guy in Canada is getting his PhD in Heaven On Earth, so I know it goes on and on and on, but I think you get that if you think of heaven on earth like that, it's a metaphoric software program that allows this new possibility to exist, like any software program, you download it, you open it up, you boot it up and it says to you, Okay, here's a whole bunch of new possibilities that you never even thought of, and I need your input. I need you to make it real. How are you gonna do that? • I really, I want to learn from you. What is it? And so that, doing that hundreds and hundreds of times, I came up with these three questions, and you and I didn't talk about this prior to the interview, but are you willing to answer my questions? Absolutely. And as I'm asking you, I want you, the listener to answer the same question, so here's question one, recall a time when you experience heaven on earth, what was going on? (7:06)• It's because you have within you what I call the already knowing about what heaven on earth is, and so when I say recall the time you experience heaven on earth, you can go right to that time when your daughter was born, placed on your chest, so there isn't already knowing what they know about what it is, or you couldn't have answered the question and I didn't define it.(10:27)• Every time somebody shares what they're having on earth is it opens the space even deeper for others to share, even though the answers are different. Okay, so the magic wand removes the necessity of having to know how... And without the necessity of having to know how big... Bingo, you go right into the What, which is where I want you to go, and then we go to the third question. What's simple, easy, concrete step you take in the next 24 hours to move that forward, because I don't want to just leave you an answer number two, which is the discovery of what happen on Earth is for you. (12:28)• But we are so free that we can choose to suffer or we can choose to do this co-creation, and so I'm really excited that more and more of us are feeling into... Okay, I'm un-hooking from all of that and I am going on my own way and I'm creating, and I feel like there's a lot of us that are starting to light up that path, so it doesn't even need to be scary, like we are here, we're here to support love and encourage more and more co-creating. Martin Rutte is the co-author of The New York Times Business Bestseller, Chicken Soup for the Soul at Work, translated into over 20 languages, with sales over 1.1 million copies. Martin has worked with many corporations such as Sony Pictures, Virgin Records, Apple Computer, and more — assisting them to expand their outlook and position themselves for the future. For over 15 years he has been exploring peoples’ visions for the kind of world they deeply long for – His new book on this subject: Project Heaven on Earth: The 2 Simple Questions That Will Help You Change The World...Easily,has just been published. There is a desire, a longing in each of us, for the unnecessary, immoral, and recurring problems of the planet- war, hunger, poverty, disease, hatred, addictions, abuse, crime, pollution, and more. Not just to get better, but too once and for all end! We’ve suppressed these yearning that arises from our soul, yearnings for a world that inspires hope, creativity, and engagement. What keeps this self-censoring in place is a culture that believes having the kind of world we yearn for is simply not possible. Fundamentally, it calls for re-envisioning who we are as humans and as Humanity. From our most profound cores, we continue to know the kind of world we want. Let’s discover and create our new, collective story – Heaven on Earth. How did you get started with bringing spirituality into business? Martin has a traditional background as a management consultant and speaker. About 25 years ago, he came back from consulting in Hong Kong and found himself in a bit of a funk. He ended up at an Augustinian Monastery and realized what was missing was God. At the time, everybody advised him not to talk about spirituality. He realized that his fear was holding him back and decided to explore the intersection of spirituality and work. What did you see as some of the results of bringing spirituality into the workplace? Were people happier? People realized that they could bring into work this part of themselves that they didn’t think they could. They were happier, calmer and excited about being able to talk about spirituality at work. What does spirituality mean to you? How would you define it? Martin purposefully doesn’t have a definition. It means different things to different people and he didn’t want to lose his audience by trying to force them to agree to his definition. He wants people to feel they can bring more of their soul into work. Project Heaven on Earth is very ambitious. So many people are wandering around and wondering what their purpose is. But you ask a much bigger question – what is Humanity's purpose? Many years ago, Martin read a paper that asked the question – What is the common purpose of Humanity? The idea of Heaven on Earth came just before he was making a keynote speech at a conference. He was meditating and asked himself, ‘If every business is spiritual, is that what you want?’ He realized that if we can transform business, we can transform the world. This formed itself as the idea of Heaven on Earth. What were your next steps following that thought? He was in Toronto in the late 80s, running a management consulting company, the first time he heard the word vision. He knew he wanted to talk about it, but everybody told him he was crazy and that no-one would take him seriously. So when he had the concept of Heaven on Earth it concerned him that people might find it controversial. So project Heaven on Earth lets talk a little about what that is. He many people and distilled down these 3 questions: Recall a time when you experienced Heaven on Earth Imagine you have a magic wand and with this wand you can have Heaven on Earth. What is heaven on earth for you? What simple easy concrete step will you take in the next 24hours to move that forward? When he asks these questions, no one ask him -what do you mean by Heaven on Earth. He believes this is because we all have within us a knowledge of what Heaven on Earth is. If one person believes from their soul that something is right and someone else believes that something else is right, how do you work through that? To create more Heaven on Earth? For many years Martin led dialogues with opposing parties. They would come in ready for a fight and then through good dialogue processes they started to find some overlap. One of the roadblocks that comes up in a highly polarised time is ‘they are not with me.’ You talk a lot about belief People think ‘In order to do something you have to believe that you can do it. In order for someone to do X, they need to believe they can do X.’ They can either wait for the belief to come or they can set the goal lower so the belief is not needed. Martin thinks that belief is not necessary to accomplish something. He asks the question – Have you or anybody you know done something that they didn’t believe was possible for them to do? Everybody says yes because belief isn’t necessary. What you’re saying is take action even if you don’t believe it’s possible? You also have to make a commitment. For example, someone wants to end hunger in the world but doesn’t believe it is possible. The commitment is the end of hunger and the belief is that it’s not possible. The belief could stop them which would be justifiable. Or they could say I’m working on ending hunger and I have a belief that it’s not possible. The belief is there in both cases but in one there is stoppage and in the other there is action. You tell a story about running a marathon. You’d only run 5 miles and you signed up for a marathon. It sounds like you didn’t really train for it? His friends encouraged him to sign up for a marathon and the most he’d ever run was 5 miles. To this day he doesn’t believe that he did it. But he did. There’s this messaging in the personal development world that you have to believe it to see it. But you’re saying that’s not always true. Somebody didn’t run the 4minute mile until they did. Shortly after Roger Bannister ran the 4-minute mile, other people achieved this too. He broke the belief that it couldn’t be done. What are some conversational tools you can use to bridge gaps? When Martin has a fight with his wife the essence of it is always – you’re right and I’m wrong. They’ve been together long enough that they can recognize what is happening and go into separate rooms for a moment. When they come back together, everything is fine. The key is to break the pattern. How long did it take you to write the book? 25 years. He needed to get clear about certain things before he could write it. It was tough. Martin doesn’t like writing. He likes the results but he doesn’t like the actual writing. How would you describe your younger self? Martin was a kid who loved to play. He still has a playfulness about him. As a child, he knew he was here to change the world. It was very clear to him. How do you play? He does a form of printmaking called monotype. He loves playing with children and making jokes with his wife. He’s become fascinated by comedy and has been watching a lot of Martin Short and Jerry Lewis. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Follow your passion. Follow what is true for you. And when people say you can’t do that, it forces you to look and see if your truth is still your truth. Links Project Heaven on Earth HTTP://PROJECTHEAVENONEARTH.COM
