+++ PLAYLIST +++ 22:56 - TO LIVE FOREVER IN A SKYLIT ROOM von SUNDEN 22:52 - BLANKET von TIM & PUMA MIMI 22:48 - HARVEST SKY von OKLOU/UNDERSCORES 22:46 - ADORE von CHILD STAR 22:41 - DIAMOND (ON THE MOON) von WORRIES AND OTHER PLANTS 22:38 - CRUZ von MARINERO 22:33 - NUESTRA VICTORIA von MARINERO 22:30 - ME PASA von ASTROPICAL 22:26 - AFTERLIFE von SHARON VAN ETTEN AND THE ATTACHMENT THEORY 22:21 - LET IT GROW von SKELETEN 22:17 - BUILDING 650 von SQUID 22:14 - THE LADDER von THE VEILS 22:09 - LOW LAYS THE DEVIL von THE VEILS 21:56 - TONIGHT WITH THE DOGS I'M SLEEPING von BONNIE PRINCE BILLY 21:50 - I SEE A DARKNESS von BONNIE PRINCE BILLY 21:46 - SILVER LINING von MOUNT JACINTO 21:42 - RODEO von SOPHIA KENNEDY 21:39 - YOU HURT ME von PABLO NOUVELLE 21:35 - FEEL GOOD von MARIBOU STATE 21:27 - BLACKOAK von MARIBOU STATE 21:24 - BLOOM von MARIBOU STATE 21:17 - ALL I NEED von MARIBOU STATE FEAT. +++ PLAYLIST +++ 22:57 NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS IT FEELS von LAMBRINI GIRLS 22:50 TAXI MAN von WITCH POST 22:48 RUST von WITCH POST 22:44 SURFIN' ON A ROCKET von AIR 22:39 DEALER von DRESS KIT 22:35 MANHATTAN von DRESS KIT 22:32 THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE von TOMMY RICHMAN 22:29 POINT & KILL von LITTLE SIMZ FEAT. Life of the Record
The Making of I SEE A DARKNESS by Bonnie "Prince" Billy - featuring Will Oldham

Life of the Record

For the 25th anniversary of the first Bonnie “Prince” Billy album, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Will Oldham grew up studying acting but decided to pursue music while he was attending Brown University. In 1992, he released his first single with Drag City under the name Palace Brothers. A series of albums followed under several variations of the Palace name, which reflected Oldham's unique approach to treating the album, rather than the artist, as the primary entity. In 1998, he had an epiphany that he could inhabit a new character named Bonnie “Prince” Billy for his music moving forward and put his concerns about an artist identity to rest. He began living in his father's farmhouse in Shelbyville, Kentucky along with his brother, Paul, who had been studying recording and set up a makeshift studio. In this isolated environment, Oldham worked on writing songs and had the freedom to record himself in a way that he never had before. Eventually, Oldham invited other musicians including Peter Townsend, Bob Arellano, Colin Gagon and David Pajo to flesh out the songs that would make up the I SEE A DARKNESS record. In this episode, Will Oldham describes a newfound approach to making music at this time and how he viewed his former Palace work as his apprenticeship years. As Bonnie “Prince” Billy, he found that he could portray a larger than life character who had the power to sing songs across the emotional spectrum. The Bonnie character opened up his approach to songwriting as he began to incorporate some traditional elements like bridges and dramatic builds. From a growing confidence in his singing to a deteriorating relationship and the decision to form a sub label to a love of post-apocalyptic landscapes to adding humor as a release valve to taking inspiration from contemporaries like PJ Harvey to the unlikely events that led to Johnny Cash covering the title track, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

In this episode I speak to one of my songwriting heroes, Will Oldham, A.K.A. Bonnie "Prince" Billy. From Louisville Kentucky, Will has over the past thirty years forged a highly distinctive path as one of the great American songwriters of his generation. Recording under various iterations of the name Palace from the early 1990s onwards, before settling on the BPB moniker in 1999, Will has honed a songwriting style drawing on country music, old world balladry and classic rock, always tempered with his uniquely lyrical voice. Along the way Will has collaborated with Johnny Cash, who covered his 1999 classic I See A Darkness, Tortoise, Matt Sweeney, Dawn McCarthy, David Berman and Bill Callahan among many others. Will has also been booed by Bjork fans at the Holywood Bowl, taken the cover shot for Slint's Spiderland and followed his original calling of acting in movies (Old Joy, Matewan), among much else. Will and I discuss among other things his relationship with social media and promotion in general, the three books he read that inspired him around the time he started writing songs, the five mixtapes of Scottish traditional folk ballads that set him on a path toward songwriting, how Will feels about streaming (with some very pointed words for Spotify and its subscribers), and the family circumstances which led to perhaps his most personal album, the self titled “Bonnie ‘Prince' Billy” (2015). We also discuss Will's experience working with Disney, Moana vs Encanto, hunting Octopus, the time Will received a text informing him of an imminent nuclear attack, and why Will is especially looking forward to playing for Irish audiences again soon.
