Harry sits down with Steven Pinker, who wears many intellectual hats, all well: linguist, psychologist, political philosopher, historian, and social critic, for starters. After some brief discussion of his childhood and background, they dive into Pinker's best-selling “The Better Angels of Our Nature,” (Bill Gates's favorite book at the time), “Enlightenment Now,” and Rationality” (Bill Gates's new favorite book). In those works, Pinker lay out an argument that by and large, in fits and starts, society is advancing incrementally in health, safety, knowledge, and other key benchmarks of Enlightenment values. The two also touch on Pinker's strong if idiosyncratic views about writing (he rejects much of modern pedantry about correct usage); his original Promethean work in linguistics; and his views about certain human cognitive biases. A wide-ranging and provocative discussion with one of the great public intellectuals of our time.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this installment of “A Bit of Blue Sky,” host Bill Burke describes five books he recommends that will help listeners be more optimistic (and hopefully, fulfill their New Year's resolution to do so)!    Blue Sky Bookshelf: Link    Chapters:   00:00 Welcome to A Bit of Blue Sky Host Bill Burke introduces the podcast and its mission to inspire optimism through engaging discussions. He sets the stage for a conversation about books that can help listeners maintain their New Year's resolutions.  01:29 Factfulness: A New Perspective Bill discusses ‘Factfulness' by Hans Rosling, a book that challenges common misconceptions about the world and highlights the progress we've made. He emphasizes the importance of understanding facts to foster a more optimistic outlook.  03:56 The Enlightenment and Its Impact Next, Bill explores ‘Enlightenment Now' by Steven Pinker, which reflects on the values established during the European Enlightenment. He highlights how these values have contributed to a more peaceful and prosperous world.  05:31 Humankind: A Case for Optimism Bill introduces ‘Humankind' by Rutger Bregman, a book that argues for the inherent goodness of humanity. Through compelling examples, Bregman refutes the notion that humans are naturally violent and emphasizes cooperation.  06:49 The Rational Optimist: A Thoughtful Approach In this chapter, Bill revisits ‘The Rational Optimist' by Matt Ridley, discussing how free trade and cooperation have historically led to human progress. He advocates for a rational approach to optimism based on facts.  07:12 The Power of Kind Words Bill shares insights from ‘The Power of A Few Kind Words' by Tracy Gates, a book inspired by the author's father that encourages expressing appreciation through handwritten letters. This practice aims to uplift both the sender and the recipient.

Happy New Year 2025! To celebrate, here is an encore of what proved to be the most popular episode of 2024. This rerun combines episodes 30 and 31 into one epic journey towards the frontiers of human understanding. My guest is Donald Hoffman. Our topics are consciousness, cosmos, and the meaning of life. Enjoy! Original show notes Laws of physics govern the world. They explain the movements of planets, oceans, and cells in our bodies. But can they ever explain the feelings and meanings of our mental lives? This problem, called the hard problem of consciousness, runs very deep. No satisfactory explanation exists. But many think that there must, in principle, be an explanation. A minority of thinkers disagree. According to these thinkers, we will never be able to explain mind in terms of matter. We will, instead, explain matter in terms of mind. I explored this position in some detail in episode 17. But hold on, you might say. Is this not contradicted by the success of natural sciences? How could a mind-first philosophy ever explain the success of particle physics? Or more generally, wouldn't any scientist laugh at the idea that mind is more fundamental than matter? No — not all of them laugh. Some take it very seriously. Donald Hoffman is one such scientist. Originally working with computer vision at MIT's famous Artificial Intelligence Lab, Hoffman started asking a simple question: What does it mean to "see" the world? His answer begins from a simple idea: perception simplifies the world – a lot. But what is the real world like? What is “there” before our perception simplifies the world? Nothing familiar, Hoffman claims. No matter. No objects. Not even a three-dimensional space. And no time. There is just consciousness. This is a wild idea. But it is a surprisingly precise idea. It is so precise, in fact, that Hoffman's team can derive basic findings in particle physics from their theory.  A fascinating conversation was guaranteed. I hope you enjoy it. We look at this topical and timely book by Hannah Ritchie. See more about Not the End of the World: How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet here. Not the End of the World How to Build a Sustainable Planet, reviewed This book is a positive and empowering read. The author, Hannah Ritchie does a lot of good myth busting and deconstructing some of the wilder and less fact based assertions around the future of the planet. Ritchie addresses both overly negative statements, particularly around the 'population bomb' assertions, and also climate change deniers too. She does a series of deep dives into veganism, organic food, and shopping local or further afield. While some books we have reviewed recently have failed to both inspire and offer a road map forwards in terms of if the planet can even be saved. We felt this book made a much better stab at engaging with these issues, while not leaving the reader so depressed as to descend into nihilism and despondency. This is a book that we will pass on to our teenagers, as it is informed, intelligent and a useful stepping stone to doing more in the areas where it can have the best effect. More about the book Feeling anxious, powerless, or confused about the future of our planet? This book will transform how you see our biggest environmental problems - and how we can solve them. The data shows we've made so much progress on these problems, and so fast, that we could be on track to achieve true sustainability for the first time in history. Packed with the latest research, practical guidance and enlightening graphics, this book will make you rethink almost everything you've been told about the environment, from the virtues of eating locally and living in the countryside, to the evils of overpopulation, plastic straws and palm oil. It will give you the tools to understand what works, what doesn't and what we urgently need to focus on so we can leave a sustainable planet for future generations. These problems are big. What does it mean to be spiritually strong in a world that wants you to be weak and dependent? Spiritual strength is often scorned by many people in the modern world who misunderstand what it means to be strong. Modern society and culture propagate the false view that strength is weakness and weakness is strength. Based on such an illogical view, a war is being waged on your soul, and sadly, most people are succumbing to an ideology of control and division without even being aware of the war being waged. In the great spiritual traditions of the world, the perspective of strength and weakness is completely different from that of a materialist world, giving one the strength to deal with anything that comes their way. A spiritually strong individual is a threat to an overarching system yearning for control. Learn what it means to be spiritually strong from the sane minds of the great spiritual traditions. David Deutsch is a British physicist at the University of Oxford, and the father of quantum computing. The world is governed by objective laws of physics. His answer starts from a simple idea: perception simplifies the world – a lot. Obesity is a true pandemic and one of the worst health disasters of our lifetime. The best treatment is unknown. Diets that are appropriate for thin people do not help the obese—advice like “eat a moderate diet” and “don't eat between meals” is useless for them. Intermittent fasting and the Adkin's-type diets work but require weeks to months of adjustment and need to be continued indefinitely.Agriculture is a great gift that is saving the world. Farm productivity has exploded in the last 50 years. Worldwide famine deaths have crashed. The chart below is from Steven Pinker's phenomenal Enlightenment Now (2018):Hybrid crops and mechanization have driven up corn yields. There were 20 bushels per acre in 1980, but by 2019 this increased to 160. Other crops show similar trends.Other advances have paralleled and were likely the result of abundant food. Global literacy was 55 percent in 1950 and rose by 5 percent a decade after that. It is now 86percent. No rational person—outside of an oddball billionaire or two—still worries about the “population bomb.” The number of people in the world is projected to be 9.7 billion by 2064, but this will decline to 8.8 billion by 2100.These trends debunk the media's disaster-mongering. But against this optimistic tide, we have obesity. The daily calories food producers supplied to US citizens rose from 2900 per person in 1961 to 3700 today. Adult caloric requirements range from 2000 for sedentary women to about 3000 for a few active men. Big Food must either export the excess or force-fed it to us using marketing. In 1980, 15 percent of us were obese, but this number is now a third. Overweight people are another third (CDC).Authorities have recommended low-fat diets for forty years. “Saturated” animal fats increase blood levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL), which was assumed to be evidence that a high-fat diet caused heart disease. So in 1985, the Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health recommended dietary fat restriction. When the Food Pyramid came out in 1992, these guidelines went mainstream. Later versions were promoted in 2005 and 2011. It all sounded sensible—the government was trying to help. What could go wrong? Our obesity began about the same time as the Food Pyramids promoted low-fat and low animal fat diets. The for-profit food companies helped market these ideas, peddling cheap manufactured fats and processed sugar under “low fat and cholesterol” labels. The graph below shows that how this correlated with the development of our obesity.Although the consensus is not complete, powerful evidence has now developed that we eat too little fat, and that saturated animal fats are safe. (continued in Butchered by "Healthcare."Support the show

Rob Henderson joins the podcast to talk about Season 2 of The White Lotus, Episodes 5 and 6. We originally said we would do Episodes 5-7 all together to close out the season, but decided there was enough here to have an additional conversation, and I'm glad we did. In the course of the discussion, I identify the ideology of the show as “Bisexual Classical Liberalism.” I got this from remembering having previously read that Mike White, the show's creator, had described himself as a classical liberal. I can't find this through googling, and maybe it's an attribution that came from someone else (or something that I just imagined in my head). If you know of anything out there on this, please let me know. Regardless of how White describes himself, I think this ideology I just identified is a great way to understand the worldview of the show, with its openness towards sex, skepticism towards neurotic women and identity politics, and acceptance of human nature. If I were to guess, I'd say that White's favorite writer is Andrew Sullivan. In Episode 6, we see a nod to the ideas expressed by Steven Pinker in The Better Angels of Our Nature and Enlightenment Now. Rob and I get into a possible cuckoldry storyline, which Rob doesn't think there's a lot of evidence for, but which I think could explain where the show is going. In contrast, we have similar views on what is going on with the hookers. We'll be back to discuss the season finale next week. StoryShots Book Summary and Analysis of Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress by Steven PinkerIntroduction“Nothing is more responsible for the good old days than a bad memory.” - Franklin Pierce Adams Find out why Bill Gates refers to https://geni.us/enlightenment-now-b (Enlightenment Now) as his new favorite book of all time.  https://geni.us/enlightenment-now-b (Enlightenment Now) is Steven Pinker's follow-up to The Better Angels of Our Nature. The latter asserts that human life is getting healthier and longer. The world is now safer, less violent, and wealthier. Pinker identified six major trends and five historical forces for this change. The most important one is the humanitarian revolution that the Enlightenment and its associated cultivation of reason brought. Enlightenment Now elaborates this argument by using social science data. It shows reason, science and humanism have brought us a general improvement of the human condition over recent history. Humanism is the belief that people can live by reason, rather than religious faith. Pinker explores the nature and importance of reason more in his next book, Rationality. We can use the ideas of the Enlightenment to understand things better and solve climate change - the biggest problem humanity faces. There are grounds to be hopeful about the future, despite the challenges. The world may improve for many more decades if we stick to the values of the Enlightenment. It is refreshing to think the world is a better place and will continue to improve. Join us to find out if you agree with the overarching theme of hope inhttps://geni.us/enlightenment-now-b ( Enlightenment Now). About Steven Pinker Steven Pinker is one of the world's leading authorities on visual cognition and psycholinguistics. He is a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Time magazine listed Pinker as one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World Today.” Pinker was born in 1954 to a middle-class Jewish family in Montreal, Canada. His grandparents immigrated to Canada from Poland and Romania, and owned a small necktie factory in Montreal. His father was a lawyer, and his mother was a high-school vice-principal.  He received his BA from McGill University and his Ph.D. from Harvard. He has been a psychology professor at MIT and Harvard University.  His popular and highly praised books include The Stuff of Thought, The Blank Slate, Words and Rules, How the Mind Works, and The Language Instinct. He also writes frequently for the New York Times, The New Republic, and other magazines. StoryShot #1: The Enlightenment is The Age of Questioning, Understanding, and Critiquing   The Enlightenment has given us a gift; the notion that reason and science can increase humanity's ability to thrive. Enlightenment's motto, as the German philosopher Immanuel Kant proclaimed, is “Dare to know!”. Its foundational demand is freedom of thought and speech. The Enlightenment period, also known as the Age of Enlightenment, was a philosophical movement prevalent in 18th-century Europe. It sought to question everything. The practitioners believed...

When I wrote up my experiment to live with my apartment off the grid in Manhattan for a month, I looked up what I did the morning I started. My library records show I borrowed and listened to Sebastian's book Tribe, then my browser history shows I watched a ton of videos featuring him. Soon after I read Freedom, watched Restrepo and The Last Patrol. His work makes you question your values, the values of our culture, and what you do about it. In my case, his exploration to why in a culture of material plenty, that according to, say, Steven Pinker's Enlightenment Now or The Better Angels of Our Nature, which say life is the best its ever been, in head-to-head competition, people who know civilization choose to live in other places. His books and our conversation clarify and refine the conditions, but the main appeal of not-civilization is feelings of mutual dependence and feeling needed. Our culture isolates. With affluence has come anxiety, depression, and suicide. His research and writing helped me understand why I enjoy each step of polluting less. People from the outside read me as extreme, but America pollutes extremely much. I've reduced over 90 percent, but I still pollute. I'm finding myself not extreme but traditional.Sebastian shares the main points of his books on community, mutual support, feeling needed, war, love, and more versus isolation and anxiety. At the end we talk about how to restore what we've lost and the prospect of changing culture to sustainability, which looks promising.Sebastian's Home PageLots of videos featuring Sebastian See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

My guest today is Associate Professor Ted McCormick. Ted is a specialist in intellectual history and the history of science at Concordia University in Canada. He examines the intersections between science, technology, economy and empire in the early modern era.Recently, he has taken an interest in how the concept of “the Enlightenment” has been taken up as something of an ideological cause by some popular writers. In particular he has critiqued the way the Enlightenment has been portrayed by Steven Pinker in his books The Better Angels of Our Nature and, particularly, his more recent work Enlightenment Now which Pinker has subtitled “The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress”. As a historian of the Enlightenment, Ted has serious problems with the way Pinker – a non-historian – characterises the Enlightenment and the rhetorical purposes to which he puts his version of history. Ted has also provided a list of selected reading on aspects of the Enlightenment.
