Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S44) Ali رضي الله عنه en route Kufa heard that Aisha's رضي الله عنها force was marching. He رضي الله عنه said: “I am being tested with Aisha رضي الله عنها, the most obedient of all human beings. With Zubayr رضي الله عنه, the toughest. With Talha رضي الله عنه, the most genius and with Ya'la رضي الله عنه, the most cooperative”. Ali رضي الله عنه and his force reach Rabadah, an area ~150 miles east of Madinah. This is the place Abu Zharr رضي الله عنه was buried. Ali رضي الله عنه had ~900 men. He رضي الله عنه sends men to Kufa, to get some more people recruited. The governor of Kufa was Abu Musa al-Ashari رضي الله عنه. Only when Ammar Ibn Yasir and Hasan Ibn Ali رضي الله عنهم were sent did the people agree to join. ~7,000 men joined Ali رضي الله عنه. Another ~2,000 joined from Basra. Ali's رضي الله عنه forces were now ~12,000. Ali رضي الله عنه did not want a fight to break out. Ali رضي الله عنه says: “Talha and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم will be martyred, and the Kufans will follow us in even greater numbers”. Abdullah Ibn Abaas رضي الله عنهم said Ali رضي الله عنه could not have known this; the Messenger ﷺ must have told him all those years prior! May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى be well pleased with our mother and our mawla.

She رضي الله عنها mentioned that the Khawarij wanted to hold her hostage! Imam Ali رضي الله عنه changes the capital from Madinah to Kufa. Why?: 1) He رضي الله عنه wanted no disrespect to be shown in Madinah, the blessed city. 2) He رضي الله عنه had a large following in Kufa. 3) There was funds in Iraq which could be used to supply war if needed. Ali رضي الله عنه gives his final Salaam to the Messenger ﷺ and leaves Madinah, never to return. How difficult this must have been, his entire life he رضي الله عنه spent with the Messenger ﷺ and now he has to leave…

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S39) The difficulties in avenging Uthmaan رضي الله عنه: No one could have been singled out as the murderer of Uthmaan رضي الله عنه, as many people were involved. There was also not enough witnesses so Ali رضي الله عنه could not make plans to go forward. Talha asked Ali for leadership in Basra, Zubayr asked Ali (رضي الله عنهم) for leadership in Kufa, so they could immediately get vengeance for Uthmaan رضي الله عنه and destroy the Khawarij. Ali رضي الله عنه said he needed time to think about this. Putting it simply; this difference in opinion between how the vengeance of Uthmaan's رضي الله عنه murder should be handled is what caused the civil war to break out between the noble Companions رضي الله عنهم. Today we still discuss this, and these souls are in Firdaus. Our mother Aisha رضي الله عنها very wisely decides to stay in Makkah upon hearing that Uthmaan رضي الله عنه was murdered and that rebels were loose in Madinah…

The governor of Basra was Uthmaan Ibn Hunayf رضي الله عنه, he was appointed by Ali رضي الله عنه. Our mother Aisha (a.s) elucidates the situation to Uthmaan Ibn Hunayf رضي الله عنه. She رضي الله عنها also sends a letter to Abu Musa al-Ashari رضي الله عنه, who was the governor of Kufa appointed by Ali (a.s). Some people ignorantly claim that nothing good came out of the force that our mother رضي الله عنها gathered. This is false. One of the fruits was such; the killing of Hukaym Ibn Jabala, one of the rebel leaders. All but one of the rebels were wiped out. Talha and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم called out: “We are only here for Uthmaan's رضي الله عنه murderers. If you were not involved then stay away”. Such was the nobility of the Companions رضي الله عنهم. The Messenger ﷺ: “The best of mankind are those who kill them [i.e the Khawarij] or are killed by them [i.e the Khawarij]”.

al-Mugheera Ibn Shu'ba رضي الله عنه (S64) In 50 A.H, during Mugheera's رضي الله عنه seventh year ruling Kufa, the Angel of Death (a.s) arrived. A once muscular Mugheera رضي الله عنه was now old and pale. There was a plague in Kufa, thus it's possible Mugheera رضي الله عنه was martyred by the plague. Thus passed away; The handsome, genius and one of the four shrewdest Arabs. The best fruit from Ta'if. The one who destroyed Laat. The one who our Messenger ﷺ called his beloved son. The last to physically touch our Messenger ﷺ. Governor of Bahrain, Busra and Kufa. The warrior for Allah's سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى sake. The grand nephew of Urwah Ibn Masood رضي الله عنه - al-Mugheera Ibn Shu'ba! رضي الله عنه He رضي الله عنه was martyred in Sha'baan, 50 A.H, aged ~80. Plagues were a punishment for previous Ummahs, however for ours, due to our Messenger ﷺ making a dua, they are a means of martyrdom for us.

al-Mugheera Ibn Shu'ba رضي الله عنه (S61) Muawiya رضي الله عنه appointed Ziyad Ibn Abee as next governor of Kufa. He also governed Busra - spending 6 months in each city. With Hasan's رضي الله عنه martyrdom, Hujr رضي الله عنه thought his binding was over, thus began speaking up. He رضي الله عنه was a supporter of Imam Ali (a.s). Mugheera's رضي الله عنه words were true. Ziyad did not show the same treatment to Hujr رضي الله عنه as Mugheera رضي الله عنه did. Amongst other things, when Ziyad found out Hujr رضي الله عنه had a gathering in his house in which were supporters of Ali رضي الله عنه, and that Hujr رضي الله عنه threw pebbles at Ziyad, tensions rose. Ziyad sent police to arrest Hujr رضي الله عنه and solve matters. After some resistance, Hujr رضي الله عنه and 13 of his close allies were arrested and sent to Ameer ul-Mumineen Muawiya رضي الله عنه. Ziyad sent a letter that there is witnesses that testify to these men criticising the Khalif.

al-Mugheera Ibn Shu'ba رضي الله عنه (S60) Hujr Ibn Adee رضي الله عنه was a supporter of Imam Ali رضي الله عنه. When Hasan رضي الله عنه gave Baiyah to Muawiya رضي الله عنه, Hujr رضي الله عنه was the first to say to him: “O son of The Messenger! ﷺ. It would've been better if I died before this day! Why did you do this?”. Hasan رضي الله عنه replied: “To prevent bloodshed”. How did the supporters of Hasan رضي الله عنه react to his decision? There was 3 groups; 1). Acceptance and Happiness straight away. This includes Abdullah Ibn Jafar رضي الله عنهم 2). Initially weren't happy, but later accepted. This includes Qais Ibn Sa'ad رضي الله عنهم. 3). Weren't happy, yet accepted reluctantly. This has 2 subsections - a). This binding is only until Hasan رضي الله عنه is alive. This included Hujr Ibn Adee رضي الله عنه. and b). This binding is only until Hasan and Muawiya رضي الله عنهم are alive. This included Hussain رضي الله عنه. An aged Mugheera رضي الله عنه knew his time was near. Mugheera رضي الله عنه said that they will not see a governor like himself after his leaving - and true were his words. The Salaf (r.h) said: “After Mugheera رضي الله عنه, we never had a leader like him”. The governor after Mugheera رضي الله عنه was Ziyad Ibn Abee. He governed both Kufa and Busra.

al-Mugheera ibn Shu'ba رضي الله عنه (S57) When Sa'eed Ibn al-Aas رضي الله عنه was previously governor of Kufa, he conquered Tabristan, Jarjaan and settled the uprising in Azerbaijan. He was known for his incredible strength and bravery. Just as one searches for the new moon in Ramadan, people would search for Sa'eed on the battlefield to witness his show. He رضي الله عنه was extremely generous. A man had 4 blood moneys that needed paying, 4 people were suggested; Hasan Ibn Ali, Abdullah Ibn Jafar, Sa'eed Ibn al-Aas and Ubaydallah Ibn Abaas رضي الله عنهم. A man once wept when Sa'eed رضي الله عنه helped him. The man said: “Where will I find a man like you on Earth after your passing?”. Sa'eed رضي الله عنه would put himself in debt just to aid others. Our Messenger ﷺ said whoever is in a [lawful] debt, then Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى is with you. Indeed, Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى was with Sa'eed. Sa'eed was just like his first cousin, Uthmaan رضي الله عنهم. He gave without being asked, he never said no. This was the man who Mugheera رضي الله عنه didn't want to lead over the Kufans - imagine how they would treat this noble soul.

al-Mugheera Ibn Shu'ba رضي الله عنه (S56) A now elderly Mugheera asks Ameer Muawiya رضي الله عنهم if he can be removed from his post in Kufa - Muawiya originally didn't want to remove him but upon seeing the aged physical condition of Mugheera, he decided to relieve him from the post. Muawiya رضي الله عنه wanted the replacement to be Sa'eed Ibn al-Aas رضي الله عنه - a brief overview of this elite companion: He was first cousins with Ameer ul Mumineen Uthman Ibn Affan رضي الله عنه. He was a descendant of Abd Manaf. He was of the most eloquent amongst the Quraysh, his speech matching The Messenger's ﷺ himself! Sa'eed رضي الله عنه was extremely righteous and Mugheera رضي الله عنه didn't want him to have to deal with the Kufans - so Mugheera رضي الله عنه asked Yazeed Ibn Muawiya to ask his father if he should succeed. This silences those who claim Muawiya رضي الله عنه wanted his son to succeed him straight away out of nepotism! Mugheera رضي الله عنه was appointed as governor of Kufa again, to pave the way for Yazeed.

Haidar Hobballah completed his PhD in Comparative Religions and Christian Theology at the University of Religions and Denominations in Qom, Iran. Prior to this, he spent several years studying in various seminaries and universities in Qom. He is currently the Head of the Department of Hadith and History and a Senior Lecturer in Islamic Studies at Al-Mahdi Institute in Birmingham, UK. Alongside this, he continues to teach advanced courses (dars khārij) in various disciplines of Islamic Studies. He is the author of two dozen books and numerous articles in the fields of hadith studies, jurisprudence, legal theory, theology, philosophy, and Qurʾanic studies. He is currently working on a book on the history of hadith across different schools of thought.

It also exhorts the Believers to be sincere in their faith and make charity.[3] According to Muslim theologian, Javed Ahmad Ghamidi, the theme of Qur'an 63 is to inform the Muslims that the Hypocrites are absolute liars. Amin Ahsan Islahi elaborates that: This surah is a supplement to Surah Jum`ah, the previous surah It can be divided into two sections. The first one consists of eight verses, while the last three verses constitute the second section. In the first section, the character of the hypocrites is evaluated and shown that their real ailment is their lust for worldly riches In the second section, Muslims are warned that the love of wealth and children should not make them indifferent to the remembrance of the Almighty If today they do not truly benefit from their wealth by not spending in the way of Allah, they will feel sorry, once their life ends and at that moment their regret will be of no use to them In other words, in the first section the illness of hypocrisy is elaborated upon, while in the second section, Muslims are asked to guard themselves against it Translation Asbāb al-nuzūl (occasions or circumstances of revelation) is a secondary genre of Qur'anic exegesis (tafsir) directed at establishing the context in which specific verses of the Qur'an were revealed. Though of some use in reconstructing the Qur'an's historicity, asbāb is by nature an exegetical rather than a historiographical genre, and as such usually associates the verses it explicates with general situations rather than specific events. A hadith recorded by Muhammad al-Bukhari which narrates the occasion of revelation of this surah is as follows Narrated Zayd ibn Arqam: While I was with my uncle, I heard Abd-Allah ibn Ubayy saying, "Do not spend on those who are with Allah's Messenger, that they may disperse and go away (from him). And if we return to Medina, surely, the more honorable will expel therefrom the meaner. "I mentioned that to my uncle who, in turn, mentioned it to the Prophet. The Prophet called me and I told him about that. Then he sent for Abd-Allah ibn Ubayy and his companions, and they swore that they did not say so.The Prophet disbelieved my statement and believed theirs. I was distressed as I have never been before, and I remained in my house. My uncle said to me, "You just wanted the Prophet to consider you a liar and hate you." Al-Jumuʿah is the 62nd chapter of the Quran, with 11 verses The chapter is named al-jumu`ah ("Friday") because it is the day of assembly, when the community abandons trade, transactions, and other diversions in favor of assembling to seek the all-encompassing truth and most beneficent and seek the "bounty of God" exclusively (Verse 9) This is an Al-Musabbihat surah because it begins with the glorification of God. It is He who raised a mes-senger, among the people who had no Scripture, to recite His revelations to them, to make them grow spiritually and teach them the Scripture and wisdom––before that they were clearly astray–– to them and others yet to join them. He is the Almighty, the Wise: such is God's favour that He grants it to whoever He will; God's favour is immense. Those who have been charged to obey the Torah, but do not do so, are like asses carrying books: how base such people are who disobey God's revelations! God does not guide people who do wrong. Say [Prophet], ‘You who follow the Jewish faith, if you truly claim that out of all people you alone are friends of God, then you should be hoping for death.' But because of what they have stored up for themselves with their own hands they would never hope for death––God knows the wrongdoers very well–– so say, ‘The death you run away from will come to meet you and you will be returned to the One who knows the unseen as well as the seen: He will tell you everything you have done.' Believers! When the call to prayer is made on the day of congregation, hurry towards the reminder of God and leave off your trading––that is better for you, if only you knew–– then when the prayer has ended, disperse in the land and seek out God's bounty. Remember God often so that you may prosper. Yet they scatter towards trade or entertainment whenever they observe it, and leave you [Prophet] standing there. Say, ‘God's gift is better than any entertainment or trade: God is the best provider.'

Before we can continue our discussion of the struggle between Abdulmalik and Ibn il Zubayr, we need to step back and survey the complicated situation in Iraq. Deep divisions made its cities difficult for either leader to claim, especially considering the significant Hashemite sympathies in Kufa which now had no outlet following the clan's massacre. The situation was dangerous and volatile, but presented the perfect conditions for one especially innovative and ambitious local leader.
