After Prophet Muhammad declared Ali ibn Abi Talib's successorship, the angel Gabriel descended with an extension of the verse Quran 5:3, adding "today I have perfected your religion for you, and I have completed my blessing upon you, and I have approved Islam as your religion", showing that there's a version of Islam that's perfected and a version that's incomplete.After the kutba, the people were commanded to pledge allegiance to Imam Ali, and the prophet instructed them to greet him with the title Commander of the Faithful. The Prophet instructed Ali to sit in a tent across from his own tent and ordered the Muslims to enter in groups to congratulate him and refer to him with the new title. This process took three days, and included the Muajirun, Ansar, outling Arab tribes, and the prophet's wives.By requiring the Muslim community to personally greet Ali with the new title, the Prophet legitimized Imam Ali's position and left no room for doubt in the mind of anyone present.Many sources say the companions of the prophet came to Imam Ali and congratulated him on the leadership. The first to address him was Umar ibn Al-Khattab, saying "O Ali, you have become my master and the master of every momin and momina"After the three days had passed in Ghadir, a man from the tribe of Banu Makhzum (a staunch enemy of the prophet) arrived and said "O Muhammad, I wish to ask you about three matters..." and he asked if the shahadah, if the laws of islam, and if Ali's successorship was from the prophet or from Allah. When the prophet replied that they were all from Allah, the man became very angry and said "Oh Allah, if Muhammad is truthful then blast me with fire" and within minutes he was struck by lightning.Lecture notes available at http://www.why-quran.org/?p=777.Subscribe at http://www.why-quran.org/subscribe to watch the lectures live and participate in the Q&A at the end of each class.Video recording of this lecture + Q&A available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9hESB_xSZA&list=PLpkB0iwLgfTat-Pgh4W3WFmupPamiC9UT.

Join us this week on Jumah Nights with Br. Mohamed Ali where we explore the principles of Tanzil & Ta'wil which are crucial in determining and ensuring that the Qur'an remains relevant in all times and eras. This concept is one that isn't given its due importance, however with its understanding we're able to draw teachings from the Qur'an that we would not have been able to without them. It is only through the event of Ghadeer that we are able to learn and understand these principles, otherwise the Qur'an becomes an outdated book!
"Why are you even a Shia?" - The words which we hear all too often, particularly now, between the emotive seasons of Ghadeer and Muharram. In this episode, Ahmed and Sayed Ali are joined by Sayed Jawad Elhassan, a student of Islam and active member of community. We look at responses to hate speech, along with reinforcing the reasons why we accept Wilayah, and accept the leadership of Imam Ali (as) after the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw). We also talk about the value of engaging in religious dialogue, as well as some of our favourite hadith within Shiism. Join us in this upbeat and insightful episode.
Eid e Ghadeer || Ustad e Mohtaram Syed Jawad Naqvi || 24th June 2024
In our latest episode of "Light of Reflection," we confront the harsh realities of our world, where 700 lives are lost in a day, and humanity's suffering seems unending. We delve deep into the moral dilemmas of our time, reflecting on the curse of money and the silence born out of fear of losing status and wealth.
Welcome to the 'Light of Reflection Podcast', where we delve deep into the heart of Islamic teachings, drawing connections between historical events and our present-day challenges. In this episode, journey with us as we explore the pivotal proclamation at Ghadir-e-Khum, understanding the profound bond between the Quran and the Ahlul Bayt al-Assalam. Discover the essence of true leadership as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad and Imam Ali al-Assalam. As we navigate through these enlightening narratives, let's reflect, learn, and be inspired to live by these guiding principles.
Brother Talib, who was raised amongst the urban culture of London and discovered Islam in a unique way. His journey into Islam revealed a startling truth: many lack exposure to different Islamic perspectives. Talib, however, embraced Shia Islam, but was initially discouraged from exploring it further and was told to stay clear from pivotal events like Ghadeer and Karbala, and was told that Shias had a separate religion. With his unique urban background, Talib offers us a fresh perspective that sheds light on the complexities of faith in the modern world.
In this week's episode, brother Mohamed Ali discusses the phases of the religion of Islam and how the religion reached the phase of Ta'wil following the declaration of al-Ghadeer. We then spoke about the effect of Western culture on our understanding of our religion and who we should be taking as our examples in ensuring that we are able to serve the Imam of our time in the best way possible.
In this week's episode, with the celebration of Eid al-Ghadeer - we begin a new series about the Wilayah of the Ahlulbayt, where brother Mohamed Ali discussed the verses of the Qur'an in relation to the event of Ghadir and explored some of the entailments of this declaration. We also discuss whether we have managed to build the correct infrastructure in our communities to welcome reverts joining the school of Ahlulbayt, and covering a few misconceptions a few of us may have with regards to reverts.

In this week's episode, Sayed Ali Radhawi and Ahmed Abbas get into detail about Eid al Ghadeer. Some reject its significance, others recognise it as the solidification and the announcement of the guardianship (wilayah) of Imam Ali (as). We debate, discuss and celebrate in this week's conversation.
We wandered through Arabic poetry and prose to talk about many different forms of literary love: regretful love, unreciprocated love, bad love, vengeful love, liberating love, married love. We read this poem by Núra al-Hawshán: “O eyes, pour me the clearest, freshest tearsAnd when the fresh part's over, pour me the dregs.O eyes, gaze at his harvest and guard it.Keep watch upon his water-camels, look at his well.If he passes me on the roadI can't speak to him.O God, such afflictionAnd utter calamity!Whoever desires usWe scorn to desire,And whom we desireFeeble fate does not deliver.” The Núra al-Hawshán poem, translated by Moneera al-Ghadeer, has a modern musical adaptation on YouTube produced by Majed Al Esa. Yasmine Seale's translation of Ulayya Bint El Mahdi. It isn't long until Muslim scholars will be running on Artificial Intelligence. ChatGPT is a AI chat system that answers your questions based on what it learns over the internet. With your help, our cohost's had fun using ChatGPT and threw at it some puzzling questions. Does AI adhere to Hijab? Where is the Mahdi (ajtf)? What happened at Ghadeer? And more! This is definitely an episode not to miss.
Allah says in Surah Al-Insan that Allah created humans and guided them towards the right path whether a human is appreciative or thankless. But since everyone is not following the right path, many are not on the right path. What was the right path? Covenant on the day of Ghadeer. Syeda Fatima Zehra struggled to protect this message. No one can change others when people do not follow. Prophet's responsibility was to convey the message. Therefore, it is important to know the audience and how to approach them.
2nd Question: How can the companions of the Prophet, who had fought with the Prophet, turn back on the allegiance that they made at Ghadeer? The simple answer is that this wasn't the first time that they had turned back on their allegiance to the Prophet. Here are three examples: 1- Breaking the Beyah al-Ridhwan (Allegiance before the Treaty of Hudebiya): When the Prophet went to Makkah for Umrah with 3-5K companions, Quresh didn't allow him to perform Umrah. Prophet asked all Muslims to renew their Beyah/allegiance to him under a tree outside Makkah. All of them agreed to accept Prophet's decision whether to fight or agree to a truce. This resulted in the Treaty of Hudebiyah. However, many turned against the Prophet in 2 days including Umer. The Prophet ordered the companions to break their Ahram and offer sacrifice. They refused to do so without going to Makkah. The Prophet was very upset and went to his tent where Hazrat Umm-e-Salma was accompanying him. She asked about what is making the Prophet sad. Upon learning, she recommended that the Prophet should break his Ahram and offer sacrifice. Once he, Imam Ali and a few companions did that, other followed. 2- Breaking the covenant at the Battle of Khyber On Day 1, Abu Bakr was given the flag and went to fight with the army but retreated. On Day 2, Umer was sent but retreated. This continued for 39 days. Then on the 40th day, the Prophet gave the flag to Imam Ali AS, who didn't retreat. Rather defeated the army of Khyber. In Surah Ahzab, Allah mentions that the Muslims (companions of the Prophet) have their allegiance that they will not return without a fight but kept running back for 39 days. Thus breaking their promise to the Prophet. 3- Rebellion against Usama The top companions declined to go fight under the generalship of Usama bin Zayd when the Prophet asked all the senior companions to leave Madinah with the army of Usama except for Imam Ali AS. They argued that Usama was young. The Prophet condemned them and said that you did the same against his father Zaid bin Hairitha when he was made the leader in the battle of Mutah The people did the above things and broke the covenant of the Prophet because of their nature. There are two reasons why they ignored the allegiance of Ghadeer: 1- The thought of the Prophet as a regular human like themselves who only became a Prophet when he received the revelation. But Allah says in the Quran that Prophet is a Prophet all the time 2- It was part of their nature to be attracted towards power, authority, and Pride. They wanted to get absolute power, pride, and authority by removing Imam Ali AS from Khilafat. They showed their inclination towards the above even before Islam. For example, when Quresh rebuilt Kaaba and the question was raised about installing Hijr Aswad, they all disagreed and were about to fight/kill each other. But then the Prophet resolved the issue by putting Hijr Aswad on a piece of cloth that all leaders held so that it was brought close to the Kaabah and then he himself installed Hijr Aswad.
All the blessings that come from Allah are through the Ahl-e-Bait AS. This is supported by the Quran - Surah Al-Maidah verses 65-67. Allah mentions the key to getting access to the heavenly treasures. Verse 67 was the impetus for the event of Ghadeer. This is supported by the event of Ghadeer and the message that was sent on that day. This is supported by the sermon of Imam Hasan AS.
Are you proud of your identity as a Shia Muslim? What does Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib mean to you? In this Eid al Ghdeer Special, Ahmed and Sayed Ali discuss all things culture and religion, along with some words of poetry and a short Arabic quiz!

A lot happened after the event of Ghadeer but one question that no one asks is - What happened to the 100K+ Muslim Hajis who were present at Ghadeer? Did they die of a plague within 70 days or did their hearts die? 14 distinct things that happened after this event can be attributed to the lack “Nahi Anil Munkar.” And if we don't change ourselves, how will we be different than those who stayed quite?
Why are so many women not in work? Kim Chakanetsa brings together women from Jordan and South Africa - countries with two of the highest female unemployment rates in the world - to discuss the barriers women face getting into the workplace and how they could be overcome. Ghadeer Khuffash says that in Jordan, most women graduate not expecting to go into work. It's not just because jobs are scarce, it's also because they and their families aren't comfortable with them being in mixed sex workplaces. Ghadeer aims to provide more economic opportunities for women through her work with the nonprofit Education for Employment. In South Africa, in the midst of a jobs crisis, female unemployment is even higher than male. Pearl Pillay says that on top of the economic barriers, women are also overlooked, exploited and harassed in their attempts to find work. Pearl runs Youth Lab, a think tank that aims to give young South Africans a say in the policies that affect them, and she believes the whole conversation about jobs should be refocused on aspirations and fair wages. The angels and the Spirit (of the faithful) ascend to Him in a day the measure of which is (equal to) fifty thousand years (a day of spiritual advancement of the faithful is equivalent to fifty thousand years of material advancement, thus the development and progress of the human soul knows no end). (70:4) Commentary NUMBER 50,000: In Sūrah al-Maʿārij (chapter 70), after speaking of the punishment which befell a specific person, which according to the history of revelation, was in regards to a person who mocked the Prophet’s proclamation on the day of Ghadeer of the mastership of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭalib, Allah then states that the Angels and the Rūḥ ascend to Him in a day which is equivalent to 50,000 of “our” days. What does this mean? Does it really take 50,000 of “our” days for the Angels and this creation known as the Rūḥ to ascend to Allah? Is He that far away? Don’t they travel at the speed of light or something even faster? Why make mention of this number in the Quran? Is it metaphorical? Without a doubt, this ‘ascent’ is not physical, rather, it carries with it spiritual connotations – these creations of Allah ascend to Him with haste seeking proximity to their Lord –preparing themselves to take orders from Him and then fulfill them. Scholars believe that the meaning of the Rūḥ in this verse is the Rūḥ al-Amīn – the great Angel also spoken about in Sūrah al-Qadr where Allah said: تَنَزَّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ مِنْ كُلِّ أَمْرٍ٤ And as for the phrase that this ascent takes, “…50,000 years…” to complete, well this may be an allusion to the fact that the Day of Judgement, according the days of our world and as mentioned in Sūrah al-Sajdah, verse 5, is 1,000 years and when we combine that figure with the ḥadīth which states that the Day of Judgement has 50 stations which we must traverse, doing the math of 1,000 years x 50 stations gives us the total of 50,000 years. Other commentators of the Quran have the opinion that the usage of the term, “…50,000 years…” is metaphorical and refers to a large amount – not necessarily the actual number – but that the Day will be extremely lengthy. In any case, as the aḥādīth tell us, the Day of Judgement and accounting on that day will be that long for the guilty ones, the oppressors and the disbelievers. In a ḥadīth related by Abū Saʿid al-Khudrī it has been mentioned that when this verse was revealed, someone asked the Prophet, “O Messenger of Allah! How long is that day!?” To this the Prophet replied: وَ الَّذِى نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِیَدِهِ إِنَّهُ لَیَخِفُّ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِ حَتَّى یَکُونَ أَخَفَّ عَلَیْهِ مِنْ صَلاَةِ مَکْتُوبَةِ یُصَلِّیْها فِى الدُّنْیَا I take an oath by the One who holds the soul of Muḥammad in His hand that that Day (of judgement) will be so effortless for the true believer such that it will be less strenuous than the obligatory prayer which they prayed in the transient world.[1] Point of Reflection The challenges of the world to come are, without a doubt, extremely difficult and stressful, however if we maintain our akhlāq in this world, perform our obligations in terms of the aḥkām – the rules and regulations - and ensure that we have the correct ʿaqīdah – the belief system - then with Allah’s permission, we will be able to fast-track ourselves on that day. Tonight's special guest is Ghadeer Elghafri from Toronto, Ontario. Originally from Gaza City, Palestinian, she's a sexual, physical, emotional, mental, verbal and psychological child abuse survivor. "I am Muslim and Arab .. and both cultures need help in child sexual abuse," she shares. "My mom, my eldest brother and my 2nd eldest sister abused me physically and psychologically. There was sexual abuse from my eldest brother." Ghadeer goes on, "There was domestic violence in my family home. My mom used to abuse my dad emotionally, verbally and psychologically. It seems that my grandma forced my mom to marry my grandma's relative, my father. My mom forced me to marry her relative too. It is generational trauma." In her own marriage Ghadeer experienced domestic violence from her ex-husband. "He abused me sexually, physically, mentally, emotionally, verbally, psychologically and financially. His step mother was also so abusive to me and him in all kind of abuse to get money from us." She points out that this re-trauma causes layers of trauma. "That's why I was diagnosed of having CPTSD and chronic depression! I had a chronic pain due to ankle injury 10 years ago which caused me a disability."
