This is The Digital Story Podcast #848, June 21, 2022. Today's theme is "5 Tips for Photographers Who Shoot with iPhones." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue I think it's safe to say that photographers approach their iPhone cameras just a little bit different than everyone else. And they are more likely to tap the software's advanced features. In that spirit, I have a show just for you, nimble photographer, who realizes the value of photography with any device, even the one in your pocket. I hope you enjoy the show. Customize Tools > Add Tool to [selected] Tab. You can also remove tools as well to tailor each Tab exactly to your liking. If you want to reorder the Tab icons at the top of the Tools column, hold down the Command key and drag the icon to its new location. Save Your Workspace It's a great feeling to get your Capture One Pro house in order. Now is the time to save your Workspace so you can return to it at any time. This is particularly handy if you have different workspaces for different workflows, or if you have multiple photographers using the same computer. Click on the three vertical dots at the top of the Tool Tab column. Save the Workspace, and you're set. This is also where you can move the Tool Tabs column from one side of the interface to the other. Top 10 E-M1X & E-M1 Mark III Menu Secrets You can read the entire article on the GetOlympus site. Here's one in particular that I liked, and it works with the OM-1 as well! Low ISO Processing - On Custom Menu E1. Exp/ISO/BULB (E-M1 III and E-MX) you will find a feature called Low ISO Processing (on OM-1 it's Camera Menu 1, Low ISO Processing) with two options called Detail Priority and Drive Priority. A quick explanation is that when shooting at low ISO's, if we set this option to Detail Priority, the camera will prioritize image resolution and reducing noise, and in Drive Priority it will focus on frame rate (the number of images per second). So, for my camera bodies and/or custom modes that are set for landscape and macro photography, I choose Detail Priority since frame rate is generally not critical. For wildlife photography, I choose Drive Priority since frame rate is more critical and I am not always shooting at a low ISO. Virtual Camera Club News Have you been unsubscribed? In this episode, I interview Ugis Balmaks, the Founder of Recruiter Mill based in Budapest, Hungary, a recruitment firm specializing in helping online businesses hire the best talent to grow and scale their companies. Through the recruitment process, Ugi helps 7 and 8-figure businesses hire A-players in 6 weeks or less. After running and selling a 7-figure iPhone photography business, he discovered and learned the challenges of hiring people. He then launched a recruitment firm in 2020, has developed the skill to find the best candidate, and learned what distinguishes an A-player. He's now working to make this business a mid-six-figure and he's looking forward to adding more people to his side. Ugis has been helping so many companies in finding talented individuals to grow and scale. He also makes them understand the importance of looking for people who are the best in the role. For he says, “Always prioritize getting the best possible talent and person for the role.” This Cast Covers: A recruitment firm specialized in helping online businesses hire the best talent to grow and scale their companies. Saving the time, effort, and frustration of having to manage the hiring process while running the business at the same time. The objective is to help small businesses find A-players for their team. Breaking down the fundamentals on what to look for in a candidate, how to research them, ways to drive applications, and details on the filtering process. An experienced and creative recruiter in the online marketing space. You are at a restaurant. You are seated on a lovely table with beautiful sunlight filtering through the trees. You order your favorite dish on the menu and sip on a refreshing glass of lemonade as you wait. The food arrives but instead of digging in, you bring out your phone, turn the plate so that the sun falls on the right spots and start taking photos from every angle. You even stand up in your place to make sure you capture that beautiful overhead shot.Doesn't matter if the food turns cold, it must serve the camera before it serves the belly.Did I describe that accurately? This is how most of us started our food photography journeys. We took photos with our phones and they were so good that it ignited the desire to move to a DSLR. And even though we might have a DSLR, we still use our phones for food photography today.Which is why you'll love my conversation with Lily Morello @lilybubbletea – a professional phone food photographer. I swear, when you look at her photos you cannot tell they were taken with a phone. She is a master at food photography and is sharing her top tips to rock your food photos using just your phone. Lily will also share the challenges of using a phone, how it impacts brand work but also how she has built her business of working with brands on the foundation of professional food photography taken with a phone. At the end of the day, or rather since the beginning of the day, we have all been phone photographers and shall remain so even if we rock DSLRs. Taking food photos is a natural behavior for most of us and wouldn't we love to learn how to photograph like a pro - Using. Just. a. Phone. This episode originally aired 6/18/2021 Summer is coming and the world is opening up—I'm excited! From simple dinners with friends to graduations and weddings, this seems like a good time to talk photography and taking great pictures. So let's talk about iPhone photography today. My own training included a BFA with a definite interest in photography. I learned how to interpret images, convey your message with imagery, execution of images, darkroom techniques, and more. I also share: My personal history with photography, from the Kodak 110 to the Kodak Disc camera What I learned from studying photography through high school and college The importance of the book Ways of Seeing by John Berger Why seeing and recognition—visual understanding—is so important to what we understand and what we share. How I used my degree to photograph much of the hip hop and cultural scene of the 1980s I also learned why it's important to acquire a “design eye” when sharing your brand. Now I know what works, what doesn't work and what could work when it comes to images and how to apply these concepts to working with brands. Some of the ways digital photography has improved the ways you can share your brand: Using photography on websites, social media and more The importance of a specific direction to keep you on task How digital cameras and phones have really enlarged the barriers to snapping unlimited photographs There are some classical foundational concepts such as composition, background and lighting you can apply when taking photos. Here's what I share in this area: A shortcut to easily open the camera on your phone (bet you don't know this one!) Some concepts that professionals all use when they take photos, such as the “rule of thirds” to create a more engaging image for you (and where to find this on your iPhone) How to make the most of selfies—what to do to improve them Tips to upgrade the backgrounds in your photos (and avoid the faux pas made by Megan Kelly at the Billboard Music Awards) The unexpected tip for best lighting when taking photos outdoors The best lighting when you're indoors and how to get the most of it (especially important for product photography) Artificial lights: pros and cons Remember, the better quality of light, the better clarity of image, too. You really can tell the level of professionalism from the quality of the light. A few other tips about iPhone modes: How to use the portrait mode on your camera “The blitz” and how it can help you capture that split-second image The insider trick you've never heard before to get full clarity and sharpness in your photos The importance of the timer function on your phone Other fun gadgets you can buy to help you take steady photos for sharper images Don't forget that all these concepts apply to photographs of people as well as things. You may be surprised by the amazing quality you achieve with landscapes or your products. So head out this summer, snap away and share with your audience! Linda Holt is one the most brilliant people I know. She’s an interior designer and a photographer. She has combined these two loves into teaching interior designers how to photograph their spaces with an iPhone. We start by talking about how we met and then why to invest in a really great smartphone. When I considered how much a camera cost, add up the cost of film back in the day, and realized that my iPhone could now replace my big heavy DSLR, it became a no brainer. Fact is if you’re a small business owner, not just designers you need to take great photos. But you also need to be productive about how you get your work out on to social media, so have a system. We also discuss watermarks, copyright, and lighting. We even foray into Swedish death decluttering. If that doesn’t make you want to tune in, what will? About Linda Holt is a Boston based certified color and interior decorating consultant who guides homeowners to decorate their own homes and a former professional photographer who teaches smartphone photography. I've been scared a lot in my business. Scared of not making enough money. Scared of the competition. Scared of using up my good ideas. Scared of running out of energy. Scared of embarrassing myself. What do these fears have in common? They all come from a scarcity mindset. And, frankly, it's one of the biggest things that will hold you back in business, and in life. So in this episode of the Workshop Weekly Podcast, I’m going to share some super powerful mindset shifts you can start making today to get a rock-solid foundation for going after all your big shiny goals. I'll show you how to flip limited thinking into an abundance mindset that has no limits, and once you've mastered it, it will completely set you free! Does that sound good to you? I thought it might. Let's do this! This is The Insider’s Guide to an Abundance Mindset. An abundance mindset lets you: Live an unlimited, full, and satisfying lifeExude happiness despite circumstanceGive and receive affection and items of high value with easeFeel plentiful, creative, and inspiredTake full advantage of and enjoy new opportunities that come your wayCreate memorable and meaningful life experiencesandFeel secure and confident in your life endeavors and create successful outcomes Ok, so here are my top tips for cultivating an abundance mindset The first thing you need to do is to start by becoming fully aware of your thoughts. The next step is to practice gratitude. Step three is to recognize the unlimited possibilities you have in your life. Then, cultivate and share your passions and purpose. Step five is to create Mastery Experiences for yourself. Next up, step number 6 is simply watch what you say, Step seven, my favorite, is Think Like a Beginner, Step number eight is for those days you might be feeling a little down in the dumps: Focus on What Is Going Right, And, ta-dah, step 9 is all about Creating Abundance Affirmations. >>> DOWNLOAD THIS EPISODE’S FREE WORKBOOK HERE
Guest Mark Hemmings, Author of iPhone Photography for Dummies, 2020 Have you ever stumbled across someone's work and just felt awestruck by it? For me, this is what happened when I found the work of Mark Hemmings about thirteen years ago. He is a magician with photography, with a timeless, real, and raw approach. Recently, he has found a niche by specializing in iPhone photography. Mark was hired to go to Japan for student recruitment in 1997. Beforehand, he asked his grandfather if he could borrow his Nikon camera. From there, he learned a style of photography in Tokyo that was high key, and from there, he was able to craft his own signature style. Mark now does a lot of photography teaching on Instagram, where he attaches a lesson with most of the photos he posts. We get to hear a lot of tips from Mark today about taking great photos with your smartphone and how to edit them as well. Mark's beginnings as a photographer.Teaching people photography through travel photos on Instagram.Advice for people who want to take better photos with their phone.Using older devices to take photos and fine-tuning composition skills.Taking a one-photo-a-day challenge. How to get started with photo editing.A tip that Mark has recently learned in Japan and Mexico.Struggling with the issue of blurry photos.Looking at other peoples' work for inspiration. Two steps you can take today to improve your photography skills. We all want to create beautiful images for our social media, but what if we don't have a camera and we just have to use our phones? Learning the basics of photography can help make your iPhone images better, but what if you want to add that special magic to really make your images pop? Thanks to some awesome photo and video apps, you can create crisp, clean, and bright images without having to use Photoshop! There are hundreds of awesome photo and video apps but in today's episode, Shaunae shares her favorite photo and video apps that she personally uses. Touch Retouch TouchRetouch is an app that offers you all the tools you need to efficiently remove unwanted content from your iPhone photos. This app is $1.99 but it's totally worth it. It allows you to clear distracting and unwanted things so your photos can really pop. It helps make your photos look clean and intentional. ColorStory A Color Story focuses on fresh photos and video, on-trend editing styles, and colors that pop. They have over 300 filters designed by top photographers and influencers, over 100 movable effects and over 20 advanced tools, including HSL, curves, and selective editing. Shaunae uses this app for the tools like curves but if you are looking for fun filters, this app has a lot to offer. The app is free but you can purchase different tools and filters within it. WordSwag Word Swag easily and magically turns your words into beautiful photo text designs. It's free and it allows you to share your own quotes, announcements, and deals in a stylish way. They have custom sizes so you don't have to stress about cropping for Instagram, Stories, Facebook, and Twitter. Facetune This app is basically the crazy cousin of Photoshop. Facetune gives you the ability to retouch and add artistic flair to selfies and portraits with ease, from the convenience of your iPhone. This $3.99 is fun but you can definitely go overboard and start making people look “too perfect.” It's great to use in moderation but try out all its features so you can see just how far you can go. Over This free app has inspiring templates, tools and effects to make your brand and personal projects shine! You can choose a template or create awesome graphics from scratch. This app is free and has tons of free templates. You can choose to purchase other templates and customize them in the app as well. RotateNFlip Super simple app but a true video life-saver. If you have ever wanted to rotate or flip your video or Boomerang but don't know how, this app is for you. It's self-explanatory and it's an awesome app to have if you need to make any of those quick video edits. Austin Mann isn’t just one of the best photographers in the business he also happens to be one of the best iPhone photographers. Every year when Apple puts out a new iPhone, Austin takes it somewhere jaw-dropping to test out the camera, like Iceland or the Sahara, and then he posts a review of everything he likes and, yeah, doesn’t like about the new sensor, chipset, and software. And when he’s not doing that, he’s traveling around the world shooting famous places, famous faces, and capturing awe inspiring moments from pretty much anywhere and everywhere. I had a chance to meet up with him when he was in Montreal a couple of months back and had so much fun chatting I asked him if he’d come back so we could chat with all of you as well. It's all the rage: “content marketing”. But if you think just giving away lots of great content for free is going to make you money, you haven't thought the matter through. Chances are you're making one of the three big content marketing mistakes. St. John's Cathedral in Spokane, WA, taken with my iPhone. In this episode, I'll explain how to create content that actually makes sales. Announcements: Conferences where I will be attending and/or speaking: NAMS Conference, August 9-11 SCORRE Conference, October 14-17 Platform Conference, November 3-5 And if you enjoy the podcast, I would consider it a great favor if you subscribe (and leave a review) in iTunes. Spiritual Foundations “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17 What we put into our brains makes a difference in our life, and that includes our spirit life. I'm not big on rules, so I'm not going to tell you there are things you should or should not listen to or watch. But I will suggest you might want to be careful what you put inside yourself. If the answer to the above questions is “no”, you might want to reconsider whose word you listening to, and what the consequences might be. Feature Segment: How To Create Content That Sells Content really does sell, but if you give away the store, you go broke fast. The key is you must create content that encourages a buying decision. The three big “content marketing” mistakes: Creating mediocre content. Creating content that completely satisfies your customer's needs. Creating content without being intentional. Keys to creating content that sells. Your best material is your best marketing. Create content that is “useful, but incomplete” (thanks Jimmy D Brown). Be strategic about the content you create.
