Isaac Humphries is the only pro male basketball player in the world who is currently playing and publicly gay, having made a tearful, viral announcement to his Melbourne United teammates late last year. The 25-year-old stands 211 centimetres tall and is known for his defensive “beast mode” qualities on court, but in this conversation with Good Weekend senior writer Konrad Marshall, Humphries shows his thoughtful side, stepping listeners through the private pain of the coming out process, including his decision to become one of just a handful of elite sportsmen playing today to share that side of themselves in public. On the eve of Sydney WorldPride 2023, Humphries also details the aftermath of that decision, both good and bad. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last week Melbourne United basketball player, Isaac Humphries, came out as gay. This makes him the only openly gay male player in a top tier men's basketball team. In an emotional video posted to Humphries' Instagram, he shared that coming to terms with his sexuality forced him into a very dark and lonely place. "I hated it about myself. I was disgusted at myself. I thought that I could not be that person within our environment, within a basketball environment," he said. The news made headlines around the world, but left some people asking: do we care more about male athletes coming out than female athletes who do the exact same thing. And if so, why? In this week's Queer Question, Sean asks (and hopefully answers) that very Queer Question! The Respect for Marriage Act, introduced by lesbian Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), championed by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, passes the U.S. Senate with the support of Republican Senators Susan Collins (ME) and Rob Portman (OH). The amended bill will return to the House, where Senator Dick Durban (D-IL) thinks the bipartisan bill will succeed. Following a rancorous public survey, the Australian Senate made marriage equality the law five years ago this week. Our coverage of the debate featured Senators Sarah Hansen-Young, George Brandis, Dean Smith and Penny Wong (reported by Sydney correspondent Barry McKay).
