Tensions are running high in the AI world this week after Elon Musk made a staggering $97.4 billion bid to buy OpenAI, a move that would mark one of the largest tech acquisitions in history – if it actually happens. Sam Altman shut the notion down fast, even going so far as to fire back with a post suggesting he'd buy X for a tenth of the price. But Musk's bid itself does raise questions about potential roadblocks ahead for OpenAI. Today, on TechCrunch's Equity podcast, hosts Kirsten Korosec, Max Zeff and Anthony Ha are breaking down the offer, the response, and what it means for the AI company's future, plus other headlines from the week. Listen to the full episode to hear about: What you missed from the Paris AI Action Summit: who's backing global AI opportunity and who's calling it a missed opportunity. BNPL startup Tabby's massive raise and $3.3 billion valuation, as well as its IPO ambitions in a turbulent fintech market. Archer Aviation's $300 million boost, and why its eVTOL development is leaning into defense. Equity will be back with a new interview on Wednesday, so stay tuned! Emerging American defense contractor Anduril and U.S.-based eVTOL startup Archer Aviation this morning announced an exclusive new partnership to jointly develop a hybrid VTOL aircraft for critical defense applications, targeting a potential program of record from the DOD. Those are programs that Congress not only intends to fund but has appropriated funding for them in the Future Years Defense Program. The partners hope to bring together Anduril's expertise in AI and systems integration and Archer's ability to rapidly develop advanced VTOL aircraft using existing commercial parts and supply chains in a combined effort to accelerate time-to-market at a fraction of the cost of more traditional alternatives.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.

The future of air travel. In it we cover arrival of flying cars to our cities as soon as next year, what they will look like, the reorganizing of the industrial complex to scale them en mass and how our concept of cities and daily lives will evolve as a result. Adam Goldstein is founder and CEO of Archer Aviation, a publicly listed company advancing sustainable air mobility. Archer builds electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft as part of its quest to develop new urban air mobility networks. Yes we're talking about flying cars. A future that Archer sees arriving as soon as 2025. Partnering with industry giants like United airlines and NASA, Archer is bringing its first aircraft, called Midnight, to ferry commuters over crowded highways and allow airlines to more efficiently feed their large hubs with passengers from the outer suburbs. Before Archer, Goldstein co-founded and led Vettery, a recruiting software company, which was sold to The Adecco Group for over $100 million. Subscribe for the latest episodes. What happens when your frontline employees are tired of apologizing on behalf of the company? When public perception isn't in your favor? This was the reality Oscar Munoz faced when he took the role of CEO and chairman of United Airlines in 2015. So he went back to basics, embarking on an extensive listening tour with thousands of employees — and in time, things turned for the better. We sat down with Oscar to learn about that journey, what's changed since and the value of deploying this strategy. Oscar will lead a spotlight session at IABC World Conference 2024, “Leadership Is an Act of Extended Storytelling.” The format will be part fireside chat and part town hall, to which Oscar says in this episode: “Bring it!” Bring your best questions, ask him about failure and get ready for a refreshing way to kick off your time at World Conference. Tune in to this inspiring conversation and make plans to see Oscar this June in Chicago. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Oscar Munoz is the former CEO and chairman of United Airlines (UAL) and serves on the board of directors of Salesforce, CBRE, TelevisaUnivision, and Archer Aviation, a leading Urban Air Mobility company and developer of all-electric vertical take-off and landing (“eVTOL”) aircraft.

There is lots of action this Friday as we talk about Ford's ‘teach in' where it thoroughly explained its $3B EV Loss. We also talk about JLR offering Dealers more Land Rover Inventory for closing their Jaguar stores, as well as United Airlines first Air Taxis coming in 2025. Ford held a “teach in” yesterday to explain their new reporting structure to an audience of mostly reporters, which was perfect, because they started by explaining that they are set to lose $3B just this year on EVs. Last year's loss was $2.1BThey also reported $7B in earnings from their Ford Blue Division and $6B from Ford ProLast year the company changed their financial reporting structure to focus on the various business units vs. performance in different regions. This was the first time that Ford publicly released results in this mannerCFO John Lawler reiterated, "Ford Model e is an EV startup within Ford, and as everyone knows, EV startups lose money while they invest in capabilities, develop knowledge, build volume and gain share."Speaking of recent hires from Tesla, Doug Field and Alan Clarke “It's about the talent we have,” Lawler said. “We all know there is one profitable EV manufacturer. The folks that designed those vehicles are at Ford.”What will luxury Dealers give up to get their hands on more of that high-margin luxury inventory? If you're a Jaguar Dealer, you may be tempted to give up your Jaguar Franchise. eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing) or ‘air taxis' refer to aircraft that use electric power to take off and land vertically, and are particularly useful in urban areas afflicted with traffic congestion. In this episode, we talk to Adam Goldstein, CEO and Founder at Archer Aviation. He shares how the company focuses on designing and developing eVTOLs, which they believe will “unlock the skies” and enable everyone to reimagine how they live, travel and manage time. Goldstein says these vehicles – which can carry four passengers and a pilot – will not only change the way people move but also allow people to get a lot of time back. “Imagine the trips that you've been taking in your car – it would take you 60, 90, even 120 minutes of sitting in traffic. But you could instead fly to your destination in five or 10 minutes”, he asserts. Such a future is actually closer than we think. Archer aims to get its aircraft certified by the end of 2024 and, along with its partner United Airlines, will begin commercial eVTOL flights in 2025.If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with United Airlines' Scott Kirby on how the airline is pushing the sustainability envelope. Today's conversation is with Geoff Bower, Chief Engineer at Archer Aviation, a developer of electric vertical take off and landing – or eVTOL – aircraft.Geoff is one of the most renowned engineers in the eVTOL arena, and we sat down for an in-depth discussion on developing and commercializing eVTOL aircraft. We start the conversation with a high level description of a day in the life of a chief engineer of a pioneering aircraft company, which sets the stage for a discussion about the assumptions and design tradeoffs that Goeff and his team faced when figuring out the requirements for an aircraft and mission for which there is really no historical precedent to rely on. One of our favorite parts of the conversation is when Geoff talks about the design and development tools, including multidisciplinary optimization and simulation tools developed internally at Archer, that were used to arrive at what Geoff calls productivity requirements of payload, range, and speed, as well as other requirements related to the infrastructure footprint, turnaround time, manufacturability, maintainability and many others. You will also hear from Geoff about the reasons for going with a battery electric and piloted configuration, as opposed to an autonomous aircraft with a hybrid or hydrogen propulsion system, about the economics of eVTOLs, and a deep dive into the certification process, system safety process, as well as differences between the FAA and EASA when it comes to probabilities for catastrophic failure conditions. Enjoy the conversation with Geoff Bower!

Show Notes: Google Fiber Revs Up Its Multi-Gig Speeds to 20Gbps in Newest Field Test | CNET (01:29) Google Fiber CEO Dinni Jain announced Tuesday via blog post that 20 gigs is coming, The company achieved a 20.2Gbps download speed in a field test in Kansas City Google Fiber currently offers two plan options: 1-gigabit download speeds for $70 per month and a 2-gig plan for $100 monthly. cheapest 2Gbps plan among major internet providers CNET reached out to a Google Fiber spokesperson, and was told that more information will be on the way in the coming weeks. No word yet on pricing or when to expect the plan to be available to customers. A 25Gbps speed tier from EPB costs around $1,500 per month According to Google Fiber's CEO this is just the beginning: “In the coming months, we'll have announcements to dramatically expand our multi-gigabit tiers. These will be critical milestones on our journey to 100 Gig symmetrical internet." NASA crashes DART spacecraft into asteroid in world's 1st planetary defense test | Space.com (06:45) For the first time in history, a spacecraft from Earth has crashed into an asteroid to test a way to save our planet from extinction. Spacecraft: NASA's Double Asteroid Rendezvous Test (DART) probe Asteroid: Dimorphos, 7 million miles (11 million kilometers) from Earth The goal of the mission was to change the orbit of the space rock around its larger asteroid parent Didymos . Trying to test if humanity could deflect a dangerous asteroid if one was headed for Earth. Elena Adams, DART's mission systems engineer, said that “our first planetary defense test was a success” The golf cart-sized DART (1,320 pounds) spacecraft slammed into the asteroid at 14,000 mph. Would be enough to move the 534-foot-wide (163 meters) Dimorphos a bit faster (10 minutes faster) in its orbit around its parent. Poses no risk of changing the binary system's orbit to come anywhere near Earth. The DART mission is the first demonstration of what NASA calls a "kinetic impactor" for planetary defense: crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid to change its orbit. Basic method to protect the Earth if a potentially dangerous asteroid were spotted five or 10 years before a prospective impact. Angela Stickle, the leader of DART's impact working group, said the team's simulations and models suggest the spacecraft would likely create a crater up to 65 feet (20 m) wide. Images Show Huge Plume of Debris as NASA Probe Smashes Asteroid A vast network of ground-based telescopes were trained on the event and will be following the binary Didymos-Dimorphos system over time to see how much faster Dimorphos is now moving in its orbit. The Era of Fast, Cheap Genome Sequencing Is Here | WIRED (13:35) At an industry event in San Diego today, genomics behemoth Illumina unveiled what it calls its fastest, most cost-efficient sequencing machines yet, the NovaSeq X series. Illumina controls around 80 percent of the DNA sequencing market globally The company believes its new technology will slash the cost to just $200 per human genome while providing a readout at twice the speed. Currently costs $600 for scientists to perform sequencing Sequence 20,000 genomes per year; its current machines can do about 7,500 Francis deSouza, Illumina's CEO, states: “As we look to the next decade, we believe we're entering the era of genomic medicine going mainstream. To do that requires the next generation of sequencers … We need price points to keep coming down to make genomic medicine and genomic tests available much more broadly.” Stacey Gabriel, chief genomics officer at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, states they have been “waiting for this for a long time.” She continues to talk about the benefits of the new tech: “With greatly reduced costs and greatly increased speed of sequencing, we can sequence way more samples.” A major benefit of cheaper and more efficiency sequencing is increasing the diversity of genomic datasets. Different populations might have different disease-causing genetic variations that are more or less prevalent. Additionally, by sequencing more genes you can compare and contrast the genetic sequences of a healthy individual and a disordered individual. Allows researchers to see the nuances in their genetic makeup. Illumina's new system will cost around $1 million, about the same as its existing machines. The high price tag is a key reason they're not yet common in smaller labs and hospitals, or in rural regions. Startup Says It Can Store 100TB in Nintendo-Like Cartridges | Futurism (20:24) A startup called Folio Photonics is attempting to take over the archival storage market, one Nintendo-ish cartridge at a time. Storage types like tapes, and hard disks are favored by enterprise-scale archiving purposes. Folio claims to offer a cost-effective, incredibly high-performing optical alternative to tapes, hard disks, and DNA storage Just one of their oddly-shaped, multi-layered cartridges can allegedly fit 100 terabytes of data. 100,000 gigabytes, which is nearly three times the storage of the densest Blu-Ray disk CEO Steven Santamaria explains how their tech can hold this much data: “Traditional Blu-ray discs are three or four layers and have been for 20 years (the Archival disc achieves 6 layers by having 3-layers on both sides) ... Our first product will be 8 layers per side, meaning we will have a 16 layer double sided disc." Additionally, the company claims their storage device, unlike hard drive and tape storage, is "impervious" to electromagnetic disruption, damage from radiation or saltwater, and extreme temperatures We will end off with more of the CEO talking about the tech: “Our talented engineering team has pioneered a fresh approach to optical storage that overcomes historical constraints and puts unheard of cost, cybersecurity and sustainability benefits within reach … With these advantages, Folio Photonics is poised to reshape the trajectory of archive storage." Why United Airlines is betting $1 billion on flying cars | Emerging Tech Brew (25:12) Investors, startups, and aviation bigwigs have all put billions of dollars toward making that vision a reality with electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) ventures. United Airlines being one of them The company has been an investor in California-based Archer Aviation since the startup was preparing to go public via SPAC in 2021 and also reached a $1 billion deal to buy Archer's eVTOLs last February. An option to purchase an additional $500 million of aircraft. Archer is building a four-passenger electric aircraft and aims to get it certified by the FAA for use in the US by the end of 2024. This past September, United agreed to buy 200 eVTOL aircraft from Eve Air Mobility. Why are they doing this? Mike Leskinen, president of United Airlines Ventures, told Emerging Tech Brew: “It's about making our airline the airline that customers choose to fly … A) We want to innovate. And we want to provide that to our customers first B) We have the footprint—the geographic footprint—that makes us the right player C) It decarbonizes that trip to the airport. This is not taking regional aircraft out of the skies, but it is taking cars off the road, many of which will be burning gasoline” eVTOLs could change the way we travel in the long term, with the nearer-term use case of replacing helicopters and serving as a way to get from an urban center to an airport faster. CEO Leskinen talks on the pricing of these eVTOL rides: “They're going to be expensive at first … As you build this product, as you certify this product, there are going to be massive economies of scale. And the cost is going to come down rapidly, to the point where I see a world where—because you get so much more utility out of the aircraft—the cost is no more than using an Uber X. But initially it's going to look like an Uber Black.” The challenging part will be building the infrastructure for air taxis, the “vertiports, ” which could resemble helipads with charging stations.

The Gulfstream G700 broke a transatlantic speed record, reaching Mach 0.88 - can they break the sound barrier in the near future? The FAA is investigating Virgin Galactic, asking why they departed from their flight path; they'll be grounded until the answer is satisfactory. And, Archer Aviation just received their G-1 certification, but the ISS nonetheless has issued a warning to investors to decline the intended SPAC merger deal. Will it go through? EP69 Transcript this episode is brought to you by Weather Guard Lightning Tech at Weather Guard we support design engineers and make lightning protection easy you're listening to the struck podcast i'm Dan Blewett i'm Allen Hall and here on struck we talk about everything aviation aerospace engineering and lightning protection welcome back to the struck aerospace engineering podcast i'm your co-host dan blewett on today's episode we're gonna talk about golf stream setting a new transatlantic speed record at 0.88 mach from savannah to katar uh we'll talk about faa and virgin galactic some of their woes ryanair also with boeing and talks to get some 737 max 10s out the door but it looks like those talks might have collapsed in our evt well segments say we've got a bunch about archer the faa has approved a g1 uh certification for them and the iss on the other hand is advising against the arger spac merger so we'll talk about that some big stock news there and lastly uh interesting uh article from the vertical flight society uh explaining that they've taken a directory of what now includes 500 evtol concepts a which is up from 200 from last summer so we'll talk about some of that and what we can expect if maybe all 500 designs will come to fruition um i'm sure Allen has a lot of thoughts on that so first let's talk about golf stream so Allen this is a g700 that reached 675 miles per hour or mach 0.88 on the flight across the atlantic from savannah georgia here in the u.s to qatar and then they also hopped over to paris uh reaching mach 0.90 which is 690 and a half miles per hour so this is pretty fast but i mean how fast is this it's pretty good for a business jet yeah for especially as large as it is i think the cessna citation 10 which was the fastest at the time was like 0.9192 maybe on mach yeah so it it's it's really moving aerodynamically the gulfstream's earthcraft have gotten better and better as it gotten bigger and bigger obviously it takes bigger engines yeah yeah i mean i mean if you're going to have a top-end business aircraft gulfstream is definitely leading the pack at the moment it's beautiful airplane so obviously supersonic flight is a big one um is that just breaking mach 1 like or is it are we really looking like mach 1.5 like companies like the now defunct arion and now boom who are looking in the supersonic jet realm i mean is this not is this not close enough or i mean what's the big difference here well it just takes a lot more fuel to go faster uh and a different kind of aircraft to break this sonic sound barrier gulfstream has pushed the envelope pretty well in terms of subsonic flight the aircraft is very clean and as they as they develop and continue to develop they have better computational models better aerodynamic cfd models for the aircraft so the aircraft keeps getting cleaner and cleaner if you look at a g3 to the g700 it's it's almost a different aircraft in terms of its aerodynamics and its performance i always think it's really interesting when they do these sort of like speech trials or world records on speed because they used to happen the united states quite a bit they would go from the airplanes would go from like new york to los angeles or new york to miami places where the busines...

This week saw the first evacuations out of Afghanistan following the withdrawal of US troops, which resulted in chaos in the capital. In this episode of the World of Aviation Podcast, host Adam Thorn and reporter Hannah Dowling discuss the concerning images and reports coming out of Kabul Airport as frightened residents attempt to flee the country. Plus, the crew finally reveals the details of Norse Atlantic's livery, which, somewhat surprisingly, does not take after its co-founder's previous (and very similar) venture Norwegian Air. Finally, the team talks about the current court battle between flying taxi frontrunner Archer Aviation and its rival, Whisk Aero.
Archer Aviation is seeking $1 billion in damages from Wisk Aero, according to court filings Tuesday, significantly escalating the ongoing legal battle between the two air taxi rivals. Wisk “deployed a knowingly false extra-judicial smear campaign that projected stand-alone defamatory statements about Archer to the world,” the filing says. On this basis, Archer claims that […]

Cathay Pacific and Lufthansa are working with Airbus to reduce the number of pilots required in the cockpit during high altitude cruise on long-haul flights to cut costs, but what are the implications of having just one pilot responsible for a plane-load of people? In this episode of the World of Aviation Podcast, host Adam Thorn and reporter Hannah Dowling mull the potential consequences of airlines moving to reduce the number of pilots in the cockpit as planes become ever-more automated. Plus, the team talk about Ryanair finally welcoming its first 737 MAX after a near-two-year delay, and the beginning of the end of a 17-year-long spat between the EU and US over aircraft government subsidies. Finally, the crew reveal the latest development in the world of air taxis, as Archer Aviation unveils its first demonstrator model for an eVTOL that could soon grace the skies of LA and Miami.
Archer Aviation eVTOL for urban air mobility, losing your frequent flyer account, more 737 MAX woes, Airbus A380 fading, Avelo Airlines starts operation, Aviation Safety Reporting System extended to drone operators.
