Q2 GDP not as strong as the headline numbers show While Real Q2 GDP increased at a 2.8% annualized pace and easily topped the estimate of 2.1%, there were some likely one time impacts that lifted the numbers. The major outlier was the change in private inventories as it added 0.82% to the headline GDP number. As we discussed after Q1 GDP, private inventories negatively weighed on GDP during that quarter as it subtracted 0.42% from the headline number and led to a disappointing growth for Real GDP of 1.4%. Government also saw a nice boost as it grew 3.1% in Q2 and added 0.53% to the headline number. Even though the report may not be as strong as the headline shows, I still believe it was a good report. Personal consumption expenditures grew 2.3% in the quarter as spending on goods was up 2.5% and spending on services was up 2.2%. Spending was different when compared to Q1 considering in that report goods spending fell 2.3% and services spending rose 3.3%. Private investment was also strong in Q2 as it rose 8.4%. Although residential was down 1.4%, nonresidential investment was up 5.2%. Equipment was the strongest subcategory as it was up 11.6% and intellectual property products also saw good growth of 4.5%. Trade was the only component that subtracted from the headline number. The increase in imports of 6.9% more than offset the increase in exports of 2.0% and led to a subtraction of 0.72% from the headline number. I believe this GDP report is exactly what we needed to see for a potential soft landing. We are still seeing growth of around 2%, but it is slowing which should help reduce inflation in the coming months.    June PCE Inflation continues to normalize as the June personal consumption expenditures index (PCE) increased 2.5% from a year ago. Core PCE, which is the Fed's preferred measure showed an increase of 2.6%. Both numbers were in line with expectations and they provide more evidence that an interest rate cut should be heading our way as we exit the year. This report does put more pressure on the Fed to provide a signal for fed policy direction at next week's meeting. I don't think there will be a cut at that meeting, but the market appears to be hoping that they at least hint towards a cut in September.    Legal battle between Warner Bros. Discovery and NBA is set to begin The NBA announced deals with Disney, Comcast and Amazon for rights to games for 11 years starting in the fall of 2025. The deals totaled around $77 B with Disney paying around $2.6 B per year, Comcast paying around $2.5 B per year, and Amazon paying around $1.9 B per year. These deals also include the rights for WNBA games. The current rights that will expire next season were for 9 years and nearly $24 B. Disney will air more than 20 games per season on ABC and up to 60 games on ESPN. NBC will air 100 NBA games each season, including about 50 that will be exclusive to Peacock. NBC is returning as a partner with the NBA after losing rights in 2002. Amazon will offer 66 regular season games. This was a major disappointment for Warner Bros. considering Turner Sports has carried live NBA games for nearly 40 years. This spells more trouble for TNT and TBS as this was a major asset for these stations. The popular “Inside the NBA” show on TNT is also in question if Warner Bros. is unable to win back the rights. Warner Bros did acquire matching rights as part of the current deal, but the NBA rebuffed the bid and said, “Warner Bros. Discovery's most recent proposal did not match the terms of Amazon Prime Video's offer and, therefore, we have entered into a long-term arrangement with Amazon.” It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. The NBA doesn't believe Warner Bros. rights extend to an all-streaming package, which was carved out for Amazon. The last time these deals were made I can't see how streaming would have been addressed. For that reason, my early inclination would be that it would be hard for the NBA to deny Warner Bros. their matching rights.    The IRS and Inherited IRAs After 5 years, the IRS has finally come to a decision with inherited IRA withdrawals. The Secure Act in 2019 removed the ability for most retirement account beneficiaries to stretch distributions over their life expectancy and now requires them to fully deplete the account after 10 years. With tax-deferred accounts, this severely limits compounding growth and increases the income tax burden on these beneficiaries. The component that has been up for debate is whether those beneficiaries also have to take required distributions during each of those 10 years. So far, no distributions have been required and a few days ago the IRS confirmed that a distribution will not be required in 2024. However, beginning in 2025, beneficiaries who inherited a tax-deferred retirement account in 2020 or later from someone who was subject to RMDs (which will be most cases) must begin taking small required distributions of their own each year as well. This does not apply to beneficiaries who are spouses, minors, or disabled, and while inherited Roth IRAs are subject to the 10-year rule, they will not have annual required distributions. Keep in mind, if you inherited an IRA in 2020 and wait until 2025 to start distributions, you now only have 6 years left to deplete it because you are still bound by the 10-year rule. This means larger annual distributions and maybe higher tax brackets. So even though you don't have to start, that doesn't mean you should continue to wait or that you should only take the minimum amount required. Every beneficiary should have their own plan on how best to distribute the funds at the lowest tax rate which will be dependent on their own income level, retirement date, level of their own retirement assets, and the fact that tax rates could increase in 2026. This could mean accelerating or deferring inherited withdrawals so they occur when your own income is lower.   Companies Discussed: Bank of America (BAC), Dominos (DPZ) and UnitedHealth Group (UNH)

While the AAP Portfolio traffics in publicly traded companies, there is a market for shares in pre-IPO companies. On this episode of the AAP Podcast, Chris Versace chats with Phil Haslett, Chief Strategy Officer and co-founder of EquityZen, an online marketplace for trading pre-IPO employee shares from privately held companies. Phil provides an overview of the pre-IPO market and the conversation morphs to Chris and Phil discussing the current state of the IPO. Phil shares why he is cautiously optimistic about the IPO market but also shares why he thinks we could see a pickup in the M&A market as well. Greater activity in one would be positive for the shares of AAP Portfolio holdings Morgan Stanley (MS) and Bank of America (BAC), but a pickup in both would that much better. The conversation then shifts to talking about AI companies and how that could impact not only the IPO market but the stock market as well. And you'll want to hear an interesting statistic Phil shares at the end of the conversation.

Bob shares the technical support levels for the S&P 500 that he's watching, and notes we have a bevy of Fed heads coming that could throw some cold water on market rate cut expectations. Chris reviews this week's data, explaining why it supports the Fed not rushing to cut rates, and how one item adds another reason to be concerned about earnings guidance when the 4Q 2023 earning season gets underway. As the two discuss, that season begins with bank earnings late next week, with results from Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), JPMorgan (JPM), and Wells Fargo (WFC). They introduced caps on debt ratios for major financial institutions June 2021 - Evergrande has to cut down its debt Buyers of Evergrande's commercial paper start to claim they have not received payments August 2021 - construction developments halted as Evergrande struggles to make payments on debt. January 2022 - holders of Evergrande retail wealth management products protest offices around the country All that is to say - we've known there's been a downturn in the property development market in China for a long time - that real estate development has been a big driver of demand for heavy industrial and energy commodities over the last decade and a half. 5/17/2023 -  BE report estimates about 11.2 percent of real estate debt in China to be "At risk of Default". Another 37.1 percent are already in default (classified as defaulters). Analysis of 186 listed developers  - borrowing that has been defaulted upon or is at risk is estimated to be 48% of total borrowing. https://news.bloomberglaw.com/capital-markets/china-faces-property-debt-defaults-worth-12-of-gdp-be-says 8/12/2023 "Credit data for July released Friday showed a slump in demand from businesses and households to borrow money for the future". Yes - a slump - of 89%, to 345.9B yuan in new local currency bank credit in July. Reuters reported that this is the biggest slow down since 2009.  https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/14/china-economy-new-loans-fall-property-fears-low-consumer-sentiment-.html 8/13/2023 Country Garden has liabilities of 194 billion dollars as of year end 2022. That's about 1 percent of China's 2021 dollar GDP wrapped up in one company. The company announced it will suspend trading of its 11 onshore bonds from Monday, according to filings to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange on Saturday. The company missed coupon payments on two US dollar bonds last week. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/14/china-country-garden-to-suspend-trading-of-onshore-bonds-from-monday.html 8/14/2023 PBOC lowered one year policy interest rate by 15 basis points. The PBOC is a bit different in that it has two policy rates, one for seven days and one for a year. July data showed consumer spending, industrial output and investment slowing, with unemployment rising. China hasn't had a rate hike since 2019, indicating that the central bank's inclination over the last 4 years has been more stimulative than anything else. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-08-15/china-central-bank-unexpectedly-cuts-key-rates-as-economy-slumps Crude oil was supposed to get some momentum out of the reopening, but that trade broke down quite fast. Crude has traded sideways in a range of $68 to 82-83 dollars all year. Another simple corollary to economic growth is the country's treasury yields. The logic there being that a rising risk free rate indicates that investors are selling bonds and taking more risk.. That increasing taking of risk feeds the supply of credit, which is the biggest driver behind what macro economists call "Aggregate Demand" Well if we look at that in the case of China… Yields have been in a slump since November of 2020. When the reopening narrative was still strong we saw the yield rise from 2.6 to 3 by February 2023, but today the market came within only 8 basis points of its all time (pandemic) low of 2.52. That doesn't look good. And this is the cool thing about the bond market. We don't know what kinds of economic downward revisions are ahead of us for the months that have already passed. China's stats bureau will publish a more accurate reading of those stats we mentioned sometime next year. We didn't know that employment had slowed until a few days ago. But if you had only taken macro cues from the general direction of the 10 year China bond yield, you would've concluded, "something's probably wrong with the economy over there". There are actually more prices we could look at as well, but we'll focus on currency. The US dollar index hit 114 in the bottom of last year's bear market. In the last month it's gone from 99.8 to 103.2. The Yuan has lapsed Macro implications for other countries. What's the bond market signal look like for the US? If the 10 year yield can close above 4.22 for about a week - multiple trading sessions, I'd revise my view on the macro economy which is that we're more likely to see a recession in the next two quarters than we are further out. 4.284 is the level we closed at today - which is interestingly the same level it stalled out at on June 27th 2008. But that wouldn't necessarily be great for stocks - because they tend to move  Related article: Earlier this year, Bank of America (BAC) compiled a list of the S&P 500 companies with the highest exposure to China. Topping the list was Las Vegas Sands (LVS), down nearly 6% this month, with 68% of its sales coming from China. Source: CNN Money (a broken clock is right twice a day) https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/08/investing/premarket-stocks-trading/index.html Implied Rate Cuts Goldman says it's expecting 50 basis points of cuts in 2024, starting in the second quarter, which is not too far off from what the SOFR Futures prices are saying - with about 50 basis points “priced in” from December to June 2024 Options - What they are and an example Definition - Start thinking of all financial instruments as legal agreements - it's a contract. That's the starting point - the building block - for all financial instruments from bonds to repos to total return swaps to credit default swaps. They're all just contracts. What does the options contract say? There are options for pretty much all types of assets - the kind we're concerned with today is stocks and ETFs - but there's options on interest rates, commodities, cryptos, every asset you can think of. They're not a new fangled financial product. I just read a paper about the behavior of US financial assets leading up to and during the Panic of September 1873. The author used options prices from that year to show that many investors - probably the savvier ones - were using options to bet against the market leading up to the panic. Now from here on, I'm going to speak in terms of options on ETFs, since that's going to be the best hedge for most people's portfolios. There are two types of options - Calls and Puts. A Call is an option to buy the ETF. A Put is the option to sell the ETF. The best way to really show how these work is with an example. Typically, you would first learn about call options, but since our primary concern today is how to deal with the risk of a declining US stock market, we're going to focus on puts.. We're going to talk about a speculative play, and then follow it up with a hedging or risk management play. Let's say that I think the NASDAQ stock index is going to fall by two percent or more in the next week. Maybe I'm expecting some kind of surprise out of the Fed or something… The biggest ETF that tracks the NASDAQ is Invesco QQQ - symbol QQQ. And let's say I want to get short exposure to 100 shares of the QQQ - which at today's closing price is about $36,300. There are two ways I can do this and options are much cheaper. But the first way is to buy an ETF that does the opposite of QQQ, it's called the PSQ - it's structured to model a short position in the NASDAQ, and therefore it's to gain about 1 percent for every 1 percent the QQQ loses. To get $36,000 of exposure with this method, I need to have $36 thousand on hand in my brokerage account, so I can go in and buy about 3,350 shares of the short ETF at about $11 bucks a piece. That's fine, you can do that. But it kind of sucks. Method 2 - I go into my brokerage account and I buy a Put Option on the ETF at the strike price of $363.00, expiring in a week's time. This gives me the right - but not the obligation - so sell 100 shares of QQQ to the option writer, in a week's time. The cost of entering this trade is the Option premium. And today, that premium was about $3.50. The minimum size of an option is 100 shares of the underlying stock or etf, so my total outlay for this, is 3.50 x a hundred equals 350 dollars.  The magic of options lay in the fact that by spending $350, I now have a short position in 100 shares of QQQ. Also, 350 is my maximum loss. That's because if the trade goes against me and the QQQ goes to an all time high, I don't have to actually do anything with the option, I can just let it expire. And that's the importance of the phrase, “the right, but not the obligation” to sell. Let's see what happens in the case that I'm right and in the case that I'm wrong. First, I'm wrong, instead of declining 2 percent in a week, the QQQ advances by 2 percent, reaching a price of $370.  To sell the 100 shares, I would have to buy them for $370 and then offload them for $363, a loss of 7 x a hundred is $700. But I don't have to do that because it's an option, not an obligation. My max loss is simply the premium I paid to get into the trade: $350 What would've happened if I'd spent $36,000 buying the short QQQ etf? The short ETF would decline in value by 2 percent as QQQ rises 2 percent (that's why it's dubbed an "inverse ETF"). So, if I'd gone out and bought positions in the short ETF... I would be sitting on a loss of $700. And that would suck. With the Put Option strategy, My trade may not have panned out, but I lost 1 percent instead of 2 percent. Second scenario, I'm right. The QQQ declines 2 percent to $356.  I now have two ways of collecting the profit from this trade. I can exercise the option to sell the shares at $363, by first buying them for $356, and by profit is 7 bucks x 100 equals $700.  Or if I don't want to actually buy the shares, I can simply sell the option contract itself, because it will now have a higher price than I paid for it. That price will tend to reflect the intrinsic value of exercising the option, and get me in the ballpark of a $700 profit. Most investors will want to sell the option contract at the higher price, rather than exercise the option and have to procure shares. The long and short of it is - this put option, allows me to get short exposure in $36,000 of the QQQ - which is to say I profit when it drops, for the small price of less than 1% of that portfolio - $350.  Second, I can gain from a fall in the QQQ without even owning the security in the first place.

Stocks continued their recent upswing as investors absorbed a stream of quarterly earnings. The rally in part reflected a positive response to earnings reports from big banks like Bank of America (BAC) and Morgan Stanley (MS). A certain “euphoria” also gripped the markets as fears of recession and inflation eased. Is this positive momentum overblown? “You have to wonder if this euphoria is enough to carry the markets when the earnings are no longer there,” says veteran bank analyst, DICK BOVE. “Because the biggest problem for the banks is the fixed loans they own.” BOVE adds that pundits and some investors are missing the bigger picture on the economy and the banks. This includes the underlying reality of JP Morgan's reported record profit and its earnings per share (EPS) buoyed by its recent acquisition of First Republic Bank's assets in a government-sponsored deal. “We're not out of the banking crisis,” says BOVE, chief financial strategist at ODEON CAPITAL GROUP.  “The big banks have lost profits.” Despite Treasury Secretary, JANET YELLEN, tamping down worries of an imminent recession—and economists dialing back the risks of a slowdown—the US and global economy may have entered its most uncertain phase in months. MAT VAN ALSTYNE, ODEON co-founder and managing partner, says many are ignoring an important indicator. That's the government bond market, which is signaling recession, he says. Moreover, US tax receipts are down, 20 percent year-on-year, another negative recessionary indicator. Piling on the debt burden, JOHN AIDAN BYRNE, notes the US national debt has soared by $1 trillion since  the debt ceiling was lifted, much of that reflecting a catch up on stalled payments during the debt ceiling standoff. Still, total outstanding public debt has now reached $32.5 trillion. Elsewhere, the CONVERSATION examines the rise of “non-bank” lenders, a sector competing with traditional banks that includes  some pension funds, insurers, mutual funds, hedge funds and other institutions. According to the Financial Stability Board, these “non-banks” had $239 trillion on their books in 2021. “The risk of loan losses in this sector if staggering,” according to BOVE. Meanwhile, a surge in home equity lending is coming, says BOVE, as US homeowners tapped into the rising equity in their homes. Kenny shares his view the economy will likely be in a rolling recession and the Fed could very well lift interest rates yet again at the upcoming June policy meeting. Chris brings us continued strength in the services economy but also notes prospects for further inflation pressure there. Both are watching wage pressures as well as the tight labor market. While the market may rally on a debt ceiling deal, the eventual refocus on the economy, Fed, and other fundamentals are likely to make that rally short-lived according to Kenny. Both shared concerns for “a deal” not “the deal” as well as the debt ceiling conversation bubbling back up during the upcoming presidential election. In terms of stocks, they dished on Bank of America (BAC), Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL), Nvidia (NVDA), and several others. And Kenny agrees with Chris and other AAP team members that AI stocks are out over their skis. Finally, be sure to listen as Kenny discusses what he's making for dinner tonight and it sure sounds tasty!

As Californians dig out from several major storms just since December, major reservoirs in the state are already filled to within 86 and 104 percent of their historical average for this date, and the Sierra snowpack sits at 205 percent of normal. With additional precipitation likely before the end of California's attenuated rainy season, and massive projected snowmelt poised to cascade downstream later this spring, water managers are already deciding what to do with the all this water. U.S. intelligence officials reportedly say that several Chinese spy balloons floated over U.S. soil under former President Donald Trump but “went undetected” at the time and officials only “discovered after” Trump left office that the balloons were Chinese surveillance. As we get ready for a big week of December quarter economic data and the heat turning up on the December quarter earnings season, TheStreet Smarts' Todd Campbell and AAP's Chris Versace sit down for the latest AAP Podcast. The two run through a number of topics influencing the market including the upcoming December Producer Price Index, expectations for a shallow and short recession, China's re-opening, wage inflation, commodity pricing, the dollar and why that combination is likely to keep the market rather bumpy in the near-term.    The topic of minimum wage increases leads to them to talk about the restaurant industry and the recent win by Presto Automation (PRST) with American Mexican style fast food company Del Taco. They then talk chip stocks running the gamut from automotive chip players, including indie Semiconductor (INDI), On Semiconductor (ON), and Wolfspeed (WOLF) in part because EV adoption looks to be a powerful driver of chip demand.   Finally, Todd shares what he'll be focused on as the pace of earnings season picks up this week using Bank of America (BAC), Wells Fargo (WFC), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley as an example. Chris does the same with Procter & Gamble (PG) sharing what the confirmation point he's looking for inside that upcoming report.

Big bank stocks are set to kick of the newest earnings season on Friday. These include JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Wells Fargo (WFC), Citigroup (C), and Bank of America (BAC). "These finance companies will set the tone for the rest of the earnings reports. Earnings estimates are expected to be down 4.1% year-over-year for the entire fourth quarter. This is the first drop since the third quarter of 2020. Could the new earnings cause a stock market rally? Big bank balance sheets are robust now, so what does that mean for a potential recession? I am eager to hear what Jamie Dimon has to say," states Michael Zarembski.

SoFi (SOFI) CEO Anthony Noto recently purchased $5 million worth of SOFI stock and then added another $2.4 million. Insider buying is a valuable metric when looking at a company, and Noto's large purchases are a clear indication of his confidence in the company. Why is he so bullish? And more importantly, should we be following in his footsteps and buying big for 2023?Noto has been buying SOFI stock all year long, but these are his biggest purchases by far. And they represent massive votes of confidence in the company. This is someone you want to listen to. Not only is Noto highly experienced on Wall Street, having served as CFO of Twitter (TWTR) and the NFL, but SOFI has also demonstrated strong growth under his leadership, with revenues increasing by 50% every quarter. So, in our opinion, his bullishness holds even more weight than a “regular” CEO's would. It's no surprise that we love SOFI stock. The company has been steadily growing revenues at a 50% clip every single quarter while mature firms like Bank of America (BAC) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are not. Additionally, SOFI's valuation is lower compared to those incumbent firms, making it an attractive investment. What's more, with several potential catalysts on the horizon, such as the end of the student loan moratorium, SoFi could be looking at outsized growth.Overall, Noto's purchases and SOFI's strong performance make it a worthwhile investment for 2023. It could soar when interest rates turn around, when the economy stabilizes, when the student loan moratorium ends. There are so many dormant catalysts here that could make this stock rocket. It's no wonder that the CEO is piling in. And we'd be buyers, too.But SOFI isn't the only stock we're bullish on right now – certain EV stocks have had our attention for a while. Lucid (LCID) and Rivian (RIVN) come up quite often, but do we have an absolute favorite for the next 12 months? We do. (Watch the video to find out which stock we're talking about!) We really believe that affordable electric vehicles will sell the best in 2023. The only uncertainty for us here is whether the company will be able to hit its production targets next year. If it does, this EV stock will sell tens of thousands of EVs per quarter by the end of 2023. And that simply isn't reflected in its current stock price. We think the stock can more than double in 2023.Something else we've been bullish on all year? Solar stocks. And lately, we've only gotten more bullish. The fundamental momentum in the solar industry is incredibly robust right now. For example, last week, McDonald's (MCD) signed a major deal to buy 190 megawatts of solar power to essentially power its entire U.S. supply chain. This means that the biggest restaurant chain operator in America is going all-in on solar for its entire operations. Not to mention, Meta (META) – one of the world's biggest companies – also signed a similar agreement to power its data center in the Southeastern U.S. Everywhere you look, there are positive news developments and really positive earnings from these companies in the solar industry. This underscores the stunning momentum the sector is feeling. We think it will only accelerate in 2023. This year, the world faces an energy crisis. We came to a fork in the road and had to make a choice: try to make oil and gas work, or embrace clean energy technology to power our world. All major governments around the world passed landmark legislation to accelerate the clean energy transition. Don't fight that trend. It will only get stronger from here.

1. Schizophrenic markets. Last Thursday, the major indexes staged a massive short squeeze rally only to give most of it back on Friday. Today, the major stock indexes are surging higher to start the day in what I call a schizophrenic market. Many investors and traders are thinking that these markets might hold up into the elections, but i'm not sure of that.2. This week is options expiration for October. As most of  the listeners know, this is a week to be more neutral and remember the institutions will play a lot of games with the popular stike prices in the popular stocks. While most stocks have been lower recently there is always a chance of a bounce for a few days this week. 3. Earnings season has begun. Today, Bank of America (BAC) and Charles Schwab (SCHW) reported earnings before the opening bell. BAC is up over 6% and SCHW is flat. Earnings will continue to pour in over the next few weeks. The mega cap tech stocks do not report until late next week. 4. Precious metals are catching a bid today after hitting a rough patch last week. We always have to be careful with the precious metals during options expiration week as they always seem to come under pressure. We shall see if this week is different. 5. Bitcoin is rallying higher by nearly 2%. It is trading around 19,600. Either way, the larger pattern trend is down and it should go sub 13,000 on a break of the current pattern. For now, its living to fight another day.
