Shoot us a Text.Episode #1054: We're kicking off Tuesday week with a look at surging used car sales and shrinking supply, BYD's aggressive EV price cuts in China, and a Waffle House partnership that brings hash browns and high-speed charging together in the South.Show Notes with links:Automotive News released its top Used Car retailers list showing that the stabilizing of the 2024 market led to some big gains. However, the current complexities and quickly shrinking market day supply is testing even the best players.Used-only dealers like CarMax, Carvana, and DriveTime saw strong 2024 growth as supply chains normalized, with Carvana up 33% year-over-year.Dealers are creatively sourcing inventory—prioritizing trade-ins and direct-from-customer purchases to avoid costly auctions. The current used vehicle supply stands at just a 43-day market supply, the lowest since 2021, with lower-price vehicles hardest to find.Tariff fears have driven consumers to buy quickly, pushing prices for the top 50 used models to an average of nearly $29,000“There isn't a lot of room for error anymore in the post-COVID used-car world,” said Bill Solko, dealer principal of Automotive Avenues.Meanwhile Cox Automotive's Jonathan Smoke warned, 2025 is going to be a roller coaster for this industry,” BYD just launched a fresh round of EV price cuts in China, triggering a market shake-up that's pummeling stocks and ramping pressure on rivals like Tesla.BYD slashed prices across several models, including a 20% cut on the sub-$10,000 Seagull hatchback now priced at an equivalent of $7,780The Chinese EV market is nearing 50% penetration — five times the U.S. rate — largely due to aggressive pricing strategies.EV maker stocks, including BYD, Li Auto, and Geely, fell sharply after the announcement, signaling investor anxiety.BYD's growing profit cushion from 2019–2024 gives it room to undercut less profitable competitors.“This new price war will put even more pressure on Tesla,” Electrek reported, especially as new players like Xiaomi ramp up.In a match made in Southern heaven, bp pulse and Waffle House are joining forces to bring 400kW ultrafast EV charging to your next roadside breakfast stop.Starting in 2026, Waffle House locations across Georgia, Texas, Florida, and beyond will host six-bay charging stations. The chargers will support both CCS and NACS connectors and deliver up to 200 miles of range in about 15 minutes. The 24/7 diner vibe adds much-needed comfort and reliability to the EV charging experience. This builds on bp pulse's growing U.S. network, which includes partnerships with Hertz and 8,000+ retail locations.“Charging up while fueling up on an All-Star Special will be convenient and fast,” said Waffle House Innovation Director David Repp.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
Technovation with Peter High (CIO, CTO, CDO, CXO Interviews)
968: From used-car retailer to tech-powered industry leader—CarMax is redefining automotive retail. In this episode, Peter High speaks with Shamim Mohammad, EVP and Chief Information and Technology Officer at CarMax, about the company's bold transformation into a digital-first business. Shamim shares lessons from his 12+ years with the company, including nearly a decade as CIO and over six years as CTO. He discusses CarMax's transition to a product operating model, its pioneering use of generative AI tools like Skye and Rhodes, and how data governance, platform agility, and agentic AI are powering customer and associate experiences. He also reflects on the company's culture of innovation, his board service at UNFI, and the leadership values that have fueled CarMax's continued growth.
Credit access improved and vehicle prices were steady in March before tariffs took effect, while the first wave of first-quarter earnings point to growth for auto lenders.Auto loan approval rates and subprime share increased in March, contributing to improved credit access.Increased demand ahead of the tariff-induced price hikes led to a surge in vehicle sales in March, while Q1 bank earnings so far reflect strength in originations.CarMax Auto FinanceChase Auto and Wells Fargo Auto all saw year-over-year originations growth, with originations up 6%, 20.2% and 12.2%, respectively. However, ongoing economic uncertainty could affect lenders' strategies. For example, CarMax announced it will shift its long-term growth timelines due to macroeconomic concerns.Meanwhile, a proposed Senate bill could make auto loan interest tax deductible for U.S.-made cars, but some legal experts say the bill's language does not clearly define a U.S.-made vehicle. In this episode of “Weekly Wrap,” Auto Finance News Editor Amanda Harris and Associate Editor Aidan Bush discuss pre-tariff vehicle prices, credit access and earnings trends for the week ended April 11.

David Faber and Jim Cramer explored what to make of Thursday's stock market sell-off and Treasury yield action, one day after President Trump's reversal on tariff policy sparked a historic rally on Wall Street -- including the Dow's biggest one-day point gain ever and the Nasdaq's best session since 2001. At the White House, Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Stephen Miran joined the program to discuss tariffs and tamer-than-expected March consumer inflation data. The anchors reacted to what Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told CNBC about AI and data centers. Also in focus: Bank earnings preview, CarMax tumbles.Squawk on the Street Disclaimer
Brad Lamensdorf and Jeff Zananiri examine CarMax (KMX), which hit a 52-week low after quarterly earnings. Brad notes that CarMax finances a lot of its own cars, which will hit them as volumes fluctuate in the trade war and interest rates stay high. Jeff is a “little cautious” since they didn't release guidance, and says the stock isn't “beaten up enough.”======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Shoot us a Text.Today, struggling OEM Nissan has announced that current CEO Makoto Uchida will be replaced by Ivan Espinosa, their latest attempt to jumpstart a turnaround. Plus, chaos at a Carmax dealership as a customer rammed their vehicle into the building and China is making AI education mandatory, even for elementary school children.Show Notes with links:Nissan has appointed Ivan Espinosa as its new CEO, tasking him with accelerating the company's turnaround after years of turmoil. He takes over from Makoto Uchida, who struggled to win full support internally and is stepping down after five years at the helm.Uchida's leadership saw mixed success, with progress on restructuring but falling short on sales targets and failed Honda merger talks.Espinosa, 46, was selected at a March 11 board meeting and will assume the role on April 1.A product-driven executive, Espinosa has been serving as Chief Planning Officer, overseeing Nissan's global product strategy and helping shape its EV and performance vehicle direction. Nissan faces mounting losses, weak sales, and a junk credit rating, with a significant debt load maturing next year.Espinosa says he will take a “360-degree look” at the company, emphasizing stability, growth, and strengthening the North American lineup.Nissan Chairman Yasushi Kimura admitted, “It would be a very challenging start for Ivan.”A routine vehicle appraisal turned into chaos at a CarMax dealership in Inglewood, California, when an angry customer drove his Subaru Outback through the showroom, injuring eight people after being upset with his offer. The incident occurred this past Saturday at 2 p.m., with the driver ramming into the store twice before fleeing the scene. Two people were critically injured, while six others sustained minor injuries, including two CarMax employees.25-year-old Andrew Arroyo, reportedly on probation for a “wet reckless” charge, later turned himself in at the LAPD Academy.A video of the event has surfaced on TikTok and is being used in the police investigation.Witness Mitchell Marshall described the scene: “He backed up, made a big U-turn, and rammed it not once, but twice.”CarMax issued a statement, confirming their employees were among the injured and thanking authorities for their swift response.Beijing is making artificial intelligence education compulsory for students of all ages, including elementary schoolers.Starting this fall, schools must provide at least eight hours of AI instruction per year, either as a stand-alone subject or integrated into existing courses.Elementary students will get hands-on AI lessons, while middle and high schoolers will focus on AI applications and innovation. The initiative aims to create a “teacher-student-machine” learning model while incorporating AI ethics into the curriculum.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Shoot us a Text.As we greet the first full week of March, we're live from Charlotte, North Carolina with good friend Todd Caputo. Today, we pause and remember titan sales trainer Jim Ziegler, who helped thousands of dealerships during his 48 years in the industry. Plus, we cover Carvana's acquisition of a CJDR store in Arizona and what it might mean in the future.Show Notes with links:Sad news this morning: Jim Ziegler, the larger-than-life trainer and industry icon, has passed away after a battle with brain cancer. Known as the “Alpha Dawg,” Ziegler spent decades shaping dealership floors into profit machines with his no-nonsense style and razor-sharp insights. His family shared the news on Facebook saying: “Jim passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his beloved Debbie and family. ”With a career spanning 48 years, Jim turned green salespeople into closers and taught GMs how to hustle smarter. His seminars were part revival, part boot camp—equal parts inspiration and tough love.He pioneered training that blended old-school grit with new-school tech, pushing dealerships to adapt to the digital age while keeping the art of the deal alive. His company, Ziegler SuperSystems, was his proving ground.Love him or hate him, you couldn't ignore him. Jim's brash voice—online and IRL—called out BS in the industry, from shady F&I tactics to lazy management. His X posts were a masterclass in stirring the pot, and he never shied from a fight.Thousands of auto pros owe their paychecks to Ziegler's wisdom. The “Alpha Dawg” may be gone, but his playbook's still in the glovebox of every dealership worth its salt.Remember him today—then get back to work. He'd hate us slackingFrom the family's post: “Jim may no longer be with us, but his influence, his lessons, and his impact will never leave us. His voice may be quiet now, but his words will be carried forward by the countless people whose lives he touched.”Carvana has taken a bold step into the new-vehicle market by acquiring Jerry Seiner Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram in Casa Grande, Arizona. This is a major shift for the online retailer, which has historically focused exclusively on used cars since its founding in 2013.Carvana plans to reopen the store on March 3, retaining all 41 employees. The move is described as a "small test" by Carvana, which stated: "We don't expect it to have any noticeable impact to our results for the foreseeable future.”This experiment follows a path previously trodden by competitor CarMax, which owned new-vehicle franchises until divesting them in 2021."We are excited to join the Stellantis network and our focus in this test will be learning how to provide great customer experiences at a franchise dealership," a Carvana spokesperson said.Questions still to be answered (per Ben Hadley on LinkedIn)Can all the CDJR cars on Carvana now be CPO?Can ADESA now access wholesale parts for CDJR repairs?Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
