In this episode we answer emails from El Yama, Graham, and James. We discuss using risk parity-style portfolios for intermediate term needs, the short-term bond allocation in the Golden Butterfly, accounting for child credit, rising equity glidepaths, the fundamental differences between 100% stock portfolios and diversified portfolios and why you want the latter for retirement unless your goal is to die with the most money, and a CAPE ratio critique from Meb Faber's podcast. And THEN we our go through our weekly portfolio reviews of the eight sample portfolios you can find at Portfolios | Risk Parity Radio.Additional links:Kitces Article re Rising Glidepaths: The Benefits Of A Rising Equity Glidepath In RetirementKitces/Pfau Paper re Rising Glidepaths: Reducing Retirement Risk with a Rising Equity Glide-Path by Wade D. Pfau, Michael Kitces :: SSRNMeb Faber Podcast with Brian Jacobs discussing problems with CAPE ratio predictions: A Century of No Return! The Truth About The Beloved Bonds (Brian Jacobs of Aptus Reveals)Breathless Unedited AI-Bot Summary:"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds," begins this thought-provoking exploration of why most investors are trapped in accumulation-phase thinking even as they approach or enter retirement. The question at the heart of this episode strikes at a surprising disconnect in personal finance: Why do so many investors intellectually understand they're investing to enjoy retirement, yet construct portfolios clearly designed to maximize wealth at death? Through a series of illuminating listener emails, Frank unpacks how portfolios optimized for accumulation often fail spectacularly during the decumulation phase. One listener confesses he "always wondered why anyone would buy bonds when clearly stocks give a far greater return," before discovering through portfolio testing that a 100% equity portfolio would have "failed catastrophically" for someone retiring around 2000-2003.This recognition—that diversification isn't about maximizing returns but enabling sustainable withdrawals—represents the fundamental insight many investors miss until too late. As Frank colorfully puts it, if your goal is to "die with the most money possible" in your "golden coffin," then by all means stick with 90-100% equities. But if you actually intend to enjoy your retirement by spending more than 3% of your portfolio annually, a properly diversified approach becomes essential. The episode also addresses why attempts to use valuation metrics like CAPE ratios to predict market movements have largely failed, and why separating your portfolio into growth and value components offers a more reliable approach to capturing rebalancing bonuses without attempting market timing.Make sure your investment behavior actually matches your stated goals. If you're planning to spend in retirement, construct a portfolio that optimizes for sustainable withdrawals, not maximum theoretical returns.Support the show
Volatility has returned to markets with a vengeance, but is this something to fear or embrace? It depends entirely on your perspective and preparation. When markets plummet, most investors panic. But what if market downturns actually represent opportunity? For younger investors with decades ahead, buying assets at discounted prices might be the best possible scenario. As Meb Faber points out, "You want to dollar cost average when stocks are at a PE of 10, not a PE of 40."The conversation delves into the nature of market volatility itself. Historical data reveals that approximately 70-80% of the market's best and worst days occur when prices trade below their 200-day moving average. This volatility clustering means big down days and big up days tend to happen close together - a phenomenon that quantitative approaches can potentially exploit.Perhaps most illuminating is the discussion around what true diversification actually means. Many investors believe they're diversified simply by owning the S&P 500, failing to recognize they're only exposed to U.S. large-caps. Genuine diversification extends across asset classes, geographies, and strategies - particularly important when correlations tighten during market stress. The discussion explores effective tail risk management strategies, including tactical allocation approaches and explicit hedging techniques. International markets trading at single-digit PE ratios offer compelling value compared to expensive U.S. indices, potentially signaling a regime shift after years of U.S. dominance.Whether this market volatility represents the beginning of something larger or merely a temporary correction remains uncertain. What's clear is that having a written investment plan before volatility strikes makes all the difference between reacting emotionally and responding strategically. As markets continue their wild ride, those who prepared for turbulence will navigate with confidence while others scramble for direction.DISCLAIMER – PLEASE READ: This is a sponsored episode for which Lead-Lag Publishing, LLC has been paid a fee. The financial world stands at a crossroads where unprecedented US stock market valuations meet revolutionary portfolio strategies and tax solutions. Meb Faber, founder of Cambria Investment Management, cuts through market noise to deliver essential insights for investors navigating today's challenging landscape. With US stocks experiencing one of their four major valuation peaks in history and the S&P 500 delivering a 10-bagger return since 2009, many investors find themselves trapped in concentrated positions they can't sell due to tax consequences. The warning signs are clear – market cap weighted indexes have become dangerously concentrated, with most investors significantly overweight in US equities compared to global alternatives.Faber introduces Cambria's groundbreaking endowment-style ETF (E&DW) that reimagines David Swensen's Yale approach for everyday investors. This strategy employs modest leverage (130-150%) across a truly global asset allocation that emphasizes foreign markets, value investments, and real assets – areas consistently underrepresented in typical portfolios. Historical evidence suggests this approach can potentially deliver Yale-like returns (13% annually) compared to the 8-10% from traditional allocations, though with comparable equity-like volatility. The presentation's most revolutionary concept comes through Faber's explanation of Section 351 ETF conversions – a tax strategy allowing investors to contribute appreciated stock positions to seed ETFs without triggering capital gains. This mechanism works like a 1031 exchange for stocks, enabling trapped investors to diversify concentrated positions while deferring taxes. The implications are transformative, potentially creating more impact than the entire crypto ETF phenomenon.Whether you're concerned about market valuations, seeking portfolio diversification strategies, or exploring tax-efficient investment approaches, this presentation delivers actionable insights from one of investment management's most innovative thinkers. The combination of endowment-style investing with tax-efficient conversion strategies represents a genuine paradigm shift in how investors can approach wealth management in 2025 and beyond.DISCLAIMER – PLEASE READ: This is a sponsored episode for which Lead-Lag Publishing, LLC has been paid a fee. We explore everything from Meb Faber challenging the sacred cow of dividend investing to groundbreaking research suggesting that maybe we don't need intuitive explanations for what works in the market. Plus, we bring in a special guest to help us mere mortals understand the complex world of options. As two self-proclaimed "non-controversial" guys, we try to find the nuance in these polarizing perspectives. Whether you're a quant, a value investor, or just someone interested in different ways of thinking about markets, there's something here for everyone. And yes, we even manage to work in references to everything from Little Rascals to My Fair Lady (Matt's brain works in mysterious ways). Join us for an episode that proves even "wildly controversial" Jack Forehand can stir things up once in a while!

It was a pleasure to host a discussion with Meb Faber, the Founder and CEO of Cambria Asset Management. Our conversation begins with the question of whether it's a good idea to buy the market at an all time high. To this, Meb argues it's actually a great idea, pointing to the data and that markets in an uptrend continue to move higher. We incorporate the notion of a trend following strategy, which Meb illustrates can be helpful in managing the inevitable and substantial drawdown which forces many investors out of the market and destroys the value of compounding in the process. No strategy is perfect, and trend following can underperform during sideways, choppy markets. But it has proven important to cut off the deep left tail with reasonable success. We also explore the work Meb has done on shareholder yield, a strategy that he's passionate about and argues works particularly well in foreign and emerging markets.Lastly, we talk about that a vastly under-appreciated aspect of return generation in investing: taxes. The team at Cambria is doing some interesting work on this front, utilizing a feature of the code that helps investors diversify risk in a tax efficient manner. I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Meb Faber.

My guest on this show today is Meb Faber, the CEO at Cambria Investment Management. Cambria manages a number of ETFs that in total have over $2 billion in AUM. Meb is also the host of an excellent podcast where he interviews people from all different corners of the investment world. I have been a listener of the podcast for years but recently realized that I knew a lot more about Meb the podcast host than I did about Cambria. Accordingly, I was interested to chat with Meb about: Cambria's journey to get to over $2 billion in AUM; Who the target audience is for the various ETFs; The Trinity portfolios that Cambria offers its clients; What is so interesting about “shareholder yield” strategies; and How Cambria differentiates itself in a the now crowded ETF space For more information about Cambria Investment Management, please visit: https://www.cambriainvestments.com/ Listen to all Compounders Podcast episodes on either Apple or Spotify iTunes: https://apple.co/3xlUvPY Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3jxkxLl All opinions expressed by your hosts and the podcast guests are solely their own opinions and do not reflect the opinion of SNN or its affiliates. Barron's Senior Managing Editor Lauren R. Rublin, Deputy Editor Ben Levisohn and Cambria Investment Management's Chief Investment Officer Meb Faber discuss the outlook for global markets, portfolio diversification, momentum investing, and the lastest corporate earnings news.
Cambria Investment Management's Meb Faber on staying ahead in the era of democratized markets -- with too many choices and maybe too much information. We discussed diversification, risk and the tech heavyweights dominating U.S. returns. And Faber's career journey.
Dan and Corey kick off the show by discussing inflation staying persistently higher, rampant government spending and money-printing, and the repercussions of the Federal Reserve's decade-plus of low interest rates. (0:41) Next, Cambria Investment Management's Meb Faber joins the conversation to talk about the exchange-traded funds ("ETFs") at Cambria and why the team focuses on shareholder yield when picking stocks for these ETFs. He breaks down the importance of shareholder yield in mega-bubble markets like today's and urges investors to pay more attention to it. (24:25) Meb then discusses managing risk on a portfolio level, including focusing on quality and value. He also covers why emerging and foreign markets are so attractive today, the opportunity in fixed-income investments like bonds and Treasury bills, and how higher interest rates have changed the game. (38:21) Finally, Meb describes himself as a value investor and shares which areas of the economy he's most concerned about. He talks about inflation driving commodities sharply higher, gold hitting new highs, and why investing at all-time highs can still be a smart choice. (56:43)

Meb Faber, chief executive and chief investment officer at Cambria Investments, says value investing is poised for success, not just in the United States -- where the market has been dominated by a few high-priced big names -- but globally, and particularly in emerging markets where the technology names that almost never trade at discounts here are bargain-priced now. In a wide-ranging interview, Faber discusses how the market's run has highlighted the disfunction of some conventional indexes, the parts of the market that excite him -- and that Cambria Funds has released new issues to cover -- and more. In "The Financial Crunch," Brent Thurman, chief executive officer at Money Pickle, dispels some common misconceptions about financial planning that are being spread in television commercials by a big national firm. Plus, in the Money Life Market Call, Eric Boughton, chief analyst at Matisse Capital, talks about buying the big discounts currently available in closed-end funds.
