Why is Santa Maria BBQ different from other types and which wines pair well with it? What does it take to earn a living as a full-time wine writer? Why does grammar really matter? Why is passion not enough?   In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Jaime Lewis, a fabulous food and wine writer, journalism professor and host of her own podcast, CONSUMED.   You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks.   Highlights How can you become a full-time wine writer? What does it look like to focus on your strengths? Which unrealistically high standards are placed on wine writers? Why does Jaime distinctly separate her writing from her journalism? What are Jaime's top tips for improving your writing? What makes Santa Maria-style barbecue unique? Why is Santa Maria-style barbecue important to California's history? How did the Santa Maria Club get its start? Why has Pinot Noir become a popular accompaniment to Santa Maria barbecue? Which wine would Jaime pair with her childhood favourite dish? What's Jaime's favourite wine gadget? Which quick trick can you use to aerate a bottle of wine? What are Jaime's favourite wine books?   Key Takeaways I was fascinated with Jaime's description of how Santa Maria BBQ is different from other types, from the various cuts of meat to preparation and cooking, as well as, of course, the wines that pair well with it. She gives a realistic picture of what it takes to earn a living as a full-time wine writer. Gotta love that phrase, marry up. I love that she's a grammar nerd like me and my mother and her mother. For me, a dangling participle is as disturbing as pouring wine into a dirty glass. Why does a lot of writing about wine ignore the alcoholic buzz? How did Audrey Hepburn kick start our guest's relationship with wine? What effect can pregnancy have on your palate?   In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with journalist and podcaster, Jaime Lewis.   You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks.   Highlights How did visions of Audrey Hepburn kick start Jaime's relationship with wine? When did Jaime start writing about wine? Why do wine connoisseurs often avoid talking about the buzz? Why is Jaime transitioning away from wine writing? What effect did pregnancy have on Jaime's palate? What was the inspiration for Jaime's podcast, CONSUMED? Which New Zealand wine left Jaime shocked and inspired? What makes working in a New Zealand tasting room so different from one in the US? Why is it so complicated to navigate the wine world as a woman?   Key Takeaways I like Jaime's reality take on why the buzz of alcohol in wine is often not mentioned in a lot of wine writing. I, too, wish there was more acknowledgement of wine's full-bodied sensory experience. I enjoyed her stories about Italian wine and food culture, with a nod to Audrey Hepburn. I'm fascinated with the impact pregnancy has on your palate, along with other physical and mental changes from depression to other diseases. It's all so connected.   Join me on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube Live Video Join the live-stream video of this conversation on Wednesday at 7 pm eastern on Instagram Live Video, Facebook Live Video or YouTube Live Video. The introductory voice and producer of this podcast, Beth Vukmanic, joined Jaime Lewis of CONSUMED in the much-awaited season nine. The CONSUMED podcast stokes candid conversation about life and flavor, ten episodes at a time. Jaime interviews eaters, drinkers, thinkers and makers across California and especially at its heart, the Central Coast. And, this past year, CONSUMED hit the top 40 podcasts about food and wine in the United States. Enjoy this rebroadcast. An Introduction from the CONSUMED podcast: When Beth Vukmanic came on the podcast, I was certain we'd talk only about her work with the Vineyard Team, an organization based in Atascadero, California that promotes sustainable winegrowing throughout the U.S. But Beth surprised me with all her many special fun facts: she was born in a moving VW Rabbit on a freeway in Detroit, she plays the harp professionally, and — here’s the biggie — she is a fitness superstar. No really. Beth is a hugely popular Instagram fitness instructor with a following like you wouldn’t believe. She’s kind, sharp, thoughtful and fun, and I liked her immediately. Listen to Beth talk about her background in agriculture, her longtime commitment to sustainable winegrowing, and how she likes to eat when getting home from a big HIIT workout. "Yoga therapy differs from contemporary yoga in that the profession has a defined scope of practice based on educational standards and accreditation requirements for training schools and yoga therapists. In dealing with pain conditions, certified yoga therapists possess understanding and knowledge of pain theories and pain physiology and may collaborate with a patient’s health care team to develop an individualized care plan. While pain and musculoskeletal conditions represent the most common reasons for referral, yoga therapists may also see clients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addiction." For Christmas Eve, I dive into the melodramatic and perverse world of Phil Spector, and his seminal Christmas pop record ‘A Christmas Gift For You', with my friend and sometimes producer Jaime Lewis and a large batch of eggnog. Why did the album bomb on first release? Which 60s pop legend considers it the greatest album of all time? How does Spector's sincere love of syrupy Christmas music track with his reprehensible real life behaviour? How does the album mash up innovative contemporary production with traditional holiday standards? What's the history of the album's lasting classic track, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)? What's the right amount of bourbon to put in eggnog? And isn't Phil Spector Jewish anyway? Listen in the player above or download the episode by clicking here. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music.Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. Deeply Twisted Sexy Tribal Affair..   Have had this set on my HD since NYD.. It is the After Party Set.. If you have no idea what an after-party is,  it’s what happens when the main crowd has long gone home.. Whoever is left has somewhat survived the night, as for the DJ on the decks.. well same thing... After Party sets are different to main sets. They are ALL about the Beat & the Bass! Both the Beat & Bassline will (or won’t) bring the punters back to the Dance floor. Tunes do not need to be commercial (whoever is left is usually either f@cked up or really committed to Jack). Normally only tight crews are left, they were here to dance and sipped it to the last drop/beat.. The whole idea of an After Party set is to slowly but surely put the spark back in the eyes of whoever is left and not totally comatose. For DJs, it can be a real treat because they have total creative freedom with revelers they know will get it IF the music is good. Those sets are twisted routes to bring back tired and spacy house-heads back to peak time and put one last smile on their faces before they say their goodbyes, hug, put their sunglasses on and are ready for the walk of shame....  Here is my After Party set.. On the darker side of Deep, with a bit of Sexy Tribal and enough Funk not to completely lose you.  Some sugar but a lot of spices and PA. I had  fun for a lot of the tunes were not in my "zone", furthermore I was pleasantly surprised that I could handle those tricky beats.  As a whole journey, I, for one maybe, would soooo get it.. Give it a listen and if at times you find it twisted, persevere and push yourself. You will be rewarded.    Playlist: Intro Da After Party (DJ Roland Clark) 2011 Welcome To My World (Larry Labirt & Petros Mitolis Vocal Mix) [Xtian Five Fathoms After Party Edit]. Dawn Williams & Mike LaBirt 2005 Five Fathoms (Kevin Yost Everything and a Groove Mix Ben Watt Edit). EBTG 2012 All This Love For You  (Raw Artistic Soul Vocal Dub). Ralf GUM feat. Diamondancer 2012 Dangerous Love (Miguel Mancha's Broken Promise Remix). DJ Divine, Nicole Mitchell 2012 Rock and Roll Love Affair (Jamie Lewis Club Mix). Prince 2012 Fire (Christian Hornbostel Remix) (The Revolution Xtian Edit]. Andrea Depp vs. Nikolas NK feat.D'Layna feat. Oscar P and Soul Rebels 2012 House Music (Robbie F. Suppafunk Remix). Fabio Tosti feat. Marshall Jefferson 2010 H.O.U.S.E Original Mix) [Xtian Added Beats Edit] Jorge Montia 2012 Party Non Stop [Vocal Mix]. Pirupa  2010 Bang Bang (Club Mix). Tommy Vee & Mr. V            2012 Back 2 NY (Original Stereo Mix). DJ Chus, Rob Mirage, Frankie Knuckles 2011 Your Love (Belocca & Soneec Vocal Dub). Frankie Knuckles feat. Jamie Principle 2012 Turn It Up (Radio Edit). Jason Chance & Marcella Woods     Highlights: Starting off with "Welcome to My World" from Petros Mitolis feat. Dawn Williams & Mike LaBirt. Petros is a greek-german prodcer remixer, which was kind enough to befriend me on FB. I always wanted to start the NYD set with this Deep and Sexy gem. In the live version, the tune was coupled with a Jaime Lewis/Kim Cooper track, I rejigged the set this month because I thought that both tracks were too similar and somewhat the Lewis' one, was taking the shine off Petros' production. Then I had to find a monster track which would fit and I could tweak to blend in.. The Kevin Yos/Ben Watt Edit of EBTG Five Fathoms was just perfect.. Massive track but not overpowering "Welcome to My World" Petros Mitolis' production are selling on Traxsource. Follow this link and please support this very talented artist. "All this Love for You" from Ralph Gum just perfect and the adlib is very tight. Love the Jaime Lewis take on Prince's new track "Rock and Roll Love Affair". Their current collaboration is giving Prince's creations the house edge they need to cross to the dancefloor. I am not unhappy of my edit of Hombostel's "Fire". I worked on two fairly poor accapella samples but the track did not suffer too much. Party Non Stop from "Pirupa". Had to be somewhere as it was one of the big track of Ibiza 2012. As for Nang Bang, anyone who knows me will tell you that I would never miss the occasion to put Mr V in a set.. Then 2 cooky Frankie Knuckles tracks, "Back2 NY" and the anthemic "Your Love",  taken from his last album released late 2012. New takes on old tracks which fitted snuggly. As said, if you stay with me on this one from A to Z, you will be rewarded. Next uploads will be progressive and down-tempo but I may slot a Soulful House one in no to lose too many followers not interested in my experiments.  Xtian
