In this episode of State of Southasia, assistant editor Nayantara Narayanan speaks to Harsh Mander, the peace activist and founder of Karwan-e-Mohabbat, a campaign in solidarity with victims of communal or religious violence. Mander says that over the past decade the Modi regime has normalised, legitimised, valourised and incentivised hate to such an extent that it is difficult to undo despite any kind of electoral setback to his party, and that much more is needed to defeat the social project of hate that is underway. State of Southasia releases a new interview every four weeks.
One of the songs I keep coming back to is “Mohabbat” by Arooj Aftab. It's really special to me. I listen to it all the time. I've been listening to it so often that I wanted to revisit Arooj's episode about it. In the time since the episode has come out, she has released a collaborative album with Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily called Love In Exile, which got two Grammy nominations. And she has a new album that's about to come out on May 31st, called Night Reign. Here's her episode: Arooj Aftab is a singer and composer based in Brooklyn. She grew up in Saudi Arabia, but her family is from Pakistan. And earlier this year, she made history by becoming the first Pakistani artist to win a Grammy. Her song, “Mohabbat" won the Best Global Music Performance Grammy, and she was nominated for Best New Artist. "Mohabbat" was first released on her 2021 album, Vulture Prince, but it's been a part of Arooj's life for a long time . In this episode, she tells the story of how the song was first born, and how it lived with her and evolved over the years before she finally recorded it.For more, visit songexploder.net/arooj-aftab.

In this episode, Dhruv and Aryan invite returning guest Ashwani Kumar Tiwari to discuss Anubhav Sinha's COVID-backdropped social issues drama "Bheed." Before that, however, Sanjeet joins them to talk about two other films directed by filmmakers frequently appearing in the "Special Thanks" section of every Sinha film -- Anurag Kashyap and Hansal Mehta. These three films -- "Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat," "Faraaz," & "Bheed" -- together reflect a specific type of leftist didacticism that exists in opposition to the right-wing films raking in cash at the box office nowadays. The film Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat is about two couples – one in London and the other in Dalhousie. Both are played by Alaya F & Karan Mehta. There are differences in class, religion, identity but the barriers they face are the same – bigotry, patriarchy and hate so strong that there is no reasoning with it. Not surprisingly, tragedy strikes but Anurag, always an advocate of revolution, ends on a fiery note with DJ Mohabbat declaring: Mohabbat se hi toh kranti aayegi. Listen to the full review by Anupama Chopra.
Anurag Kashyap has claimed in all the interviews that this is a 'Gen-Z' film. After a banging album by Amit Trivedi and Shellee, the Alaya F and Karan Mehta starter releases in theatres. Was the 50-year-old filmmaker able to explore the complex nuances of young love? Tune in to find out!

For season 13 finale, our guest is someone who defies the conventional boundaries of musical expression. Arooj Aftab, is a Grammy-winning Pakistani singer, composer, producer, and editor whose music has gained international recognition for its infusion of many genres. Her song, “Mohabbat,” was featured on Barack Obama's list of favorite songs for the Summer of 2021 & won the 2022 Grammy for "Best Global Music Performance". Her music is usually described as “Neo Sufi” as it heavily draws from the stylistic and structural components of Sufi music. She uses things like repetition, meters, or the use of specific instruments. But make no mistake, Arooj's music has no set genre. You can hear hints of jazz, minimalism, and South Asian classical weaved into her songs. Her music is captivating and haunting at times, it feels like it sucks you into the emotion of the song. Her third studio album, Vulture Prince, was released last April, receiving heavy praise from publications like Pitchfork, NPR, and Al Jazeera. Her music was recently featured on Coke Studio Pakistan Season 14-Coke Studio is a very popular Pakistani television show where established and emerging musicians from across all sorts of genres showcase their talents.. We're so excited to talk to Arooj about artistic expression and the way emotions like love, grief, and longing are conveyed through music. During the dark days of the Raj many predicted that the idea of India would eventually fail and the divisions of caste, religion and race would come to define the subcontinent. The 75 years of independent India have proved these doomsayers utterly wrong. Instead of the divisions, the peaceful co-existence of its various ethnic and cultural groups has come to define the Indian nation. Hence it is naturally a matter of grave concern that much of the national and international media in their coverage of India have been featuring alarming headlines about the rise of intolerance. Gruesome stories about communal violence and mob lynchings appear to have become commonplace. Many of India's prominent artists and academics, along with veteran bureaucrats and opposition politicians have felt compelled to draft public letters, deliver emotional parliamentary speeches and file writ petitions in the Supreme Court, seeking urgent action to check this disturbing trend. Even foreign leaders such as Barack Obama and Kamala Harris have pushed diplomatic boundaries to remind India of its commitment to democracy and the strength it derives from being inclusive. Can all of this be simply an overreaction or is it a sinister conspiracy to defame India? Or worse, is it true? Is India seeing a rise in hate?If indeed true, the alarm bells must be heeded. Hate, if allowed to fester for too long, can tear the social fabric of any society. Moreover, experts point out that "rising intolerance, hate crimes and moral policing can seriously damage the economic growth of the nation." That's a risk India, which still needs to lift hundreds of millions out of poverty, cannot afford to take. The doctrine of hate cannot be allowed to reverse India's upward trajectory. In this session, we meet face-to-face with Mr. Harsh Mander, who has been nominated this year for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his extensive work with victims of mass violence and his campaign 'Karwan-e-Mohabbat'. 'Karwan-e-Mohabbat', meaning “Caravan of Love” was founded by Mr. Mander in 2017, to show solidarity to victims of hate crimes. An award-winning author, researcher, teacher and human rights worker, he has been hailed as "an important voice for religious tolerance and dialogue."Explore More at - www.argumentativeindians.comDISCLAIMER:We invite thought leaders from across the ideological spectrum. Karwan e Mohabbat is an organization in Uttar Pradesh, India fighting bigotry with empathy and solidarity for families of people killed or lynched in the name of religion.
