Hello lovely friends,Welcome to the very first edition of The Sketchbook Dispatch! I'll be sharing one of these each month — a mix of what I've been working on in my sketchbooks and a spotlight on the incredible things our Creating Wild community has been dreaming up, sketching out, and bringing to life inside our member space.Honestly, I'm in awe. There's something so nourishing about being surrounded by curious, magical minds, and it's such a joy to be able to share even a small piece of their work with you.Alongside their creations, I'm also giving you a little peek into my own process this month. A video walk-through of my sketchbooks — eclectic, evolving, and full of both fast timed sketches (that challenge my recovering perfectionist tendencies) and slower, more thoughtful explorations (my preferred modus operandi!). I've been feeling a real pull toward “slow art” lately, but also experimenting with quicker studies to loosen things up for my illustrated work.If I had to name a theme that's emerged through all of this, it would be permission — giving myself the space to try something new (like storytelling through illustrated essays) and letting delight lead the way, even if it means stepping off the well-worn path or confronting what I thought I was and wasn't “good at.”So, with that, I hope you enjoy the video. Let's dive into what our amazing community has been creating. Before I send you off into the wild...If you'd like to be part of the Creating Wild community, you can learn more about it here. We've built a private, cozy corner away from the noise of social media. A space to explore creativity together through monthly workshops, weekly prompts, and a shared practice studio where you can connect, ask questions, and share what you're working on. We'd love you to be a part of it.

My guest for this episode is Jane Pike. I first heard Jane's name in context of the World Equestrian Games in 2018. She was the mindset coach for Warwick and Robyn Schiller, who competed in reining, and scored their best scores during an extremely high-pressure event. Prior to those games, I had never heard of reining; however, it was the discipline that captivated me then and has ever since. Back to Jane. I was very intrigued by Jane's approach to mindset training. Not only does she align with my experience of what really works, she aligns very much with the natural world. I met her in 2022 at the Journey On Podcast summit, and also got to spend time with her on at the 2023 event as well. I was thrilled when she agreed to come on this podcast.  This conversation flew by for both of us. We started and were immediately in the flow, speaking about topics like what to do with discomfort, the distinction between the action of fear and the emotion of fear, the way our mind can get in loops like Groundhog Day, and so much more. There were many quotable moments in this conversation. One of my favorite's was this: Our role is not to police other people's passions.  Here's what Jane has to say about herself:  Jane Pike is a writer, poet, and horsewoman from the South Island of New Zealand. In the horse world, her work focuses on practices and understandings that increase vitality for both humans and horses, incorporating nervous system awareness to both mindset and movement. The methods she teaches explore physical and emotional patterns at their most foundational level- the brain and the nervous system- with the aim of creating adaptability and responsiveness, both in and out of the saddle. Jane has featured and written for various magazines around the world and is a sought after international clinician and trainer through her business Confident Rider. Jane's passions and expertise also extend to how we can best live full and creative lives, and develop the tenacity and courage to do so. Her deep appreciation for writing and the arts has also seen her skip down the garden path of how it is we can all find and allow for our own unique creative expression, sharing her own writing and teaching retreats and workshops that focus on giving ourselves permission to and making the time for following the things that we love.

Jane will share a bit of her own personal journey, and will talk about how relaxation, excitement, and anxiety all relate, as well as the importance of creativity. About the Guest: Jane Pike is a coach, writer, poet, and horsewoman from the South Island of New Zealand. Often, when I close my eyes, I return to your oaks. It's not a single tree I go back to. It's the whole forest. I stand, head pressed against a trunk, and I wait to be shown. A few months back, I walked in real time there, feet on the domed diaphragm of the earth, lungs stretching up, around me, over me. I felt you there, even though I don't know exactly who ‘you' is. Maybe that's the draw of the forest, of the oaks. It's never only about the trees. We somehow know they're a touchable version of truth if only we're still enough to hear it. As I stood, people passed through, walking their dogs. We'd nod hello, exchange a murmur of required politeness and I'd want to call out, do you feel it too? What we're feeling I don't know. Perhaps I could make it physical? Do your legs feel stronger for being here? Your heart more stable for spending the time? Questions based on the universal knowing that if we stepped sideways out of our body, we too would grow leaves. I stood longer than I had time for in your forest. I lingered. It felt rude to leave. The trees there, showing so much strength and care. If I left, I'd be missing something. A limb perhaps, a branch, a green shoot, something important. I wanted to be sure they knew. Thank you, I tell them, I understand your generosity. I read more about your oaks, and I want to tell you, to the Greeks, the oak was the sacred tree of Zeus. To the Nords, it was to Thor. The Greeks believed in hamadryads, spirits born and bonded to a certain tree on which its life depends. I whisper, and wonder to myself, are we not all then hamadryads? And to you the woman, who walked the Scottish countryside in a time not hers to own whose money reclaimed the land but whose spirit revived its breath, it was Zeus, and Thor and the spirit of Hamadryads that coursed through your blood, that saved the oaks. But perhaps I have that wrong. In hindsight, I think perhaps it's you, and the oaks, that coursed through theirs. ~ Jane PikeAnother Beautiful Question with Jane Pike is a reader-supported publication. We begin and end this conversation with the topic of happiness. In our culture, we're taught that happiness is the pinnacle of life, and when we aren't happy, we have somehow failed. But what if life is meant to provide more than just happiness? What if it's the view of the hills and valleys, the experiences of our journey that make up the rich tapestry of feelings and experiences that constitute a life? We explore how some really deep and brilliant moments are born from intense pain and grief. Experiences like grief can create an opening that connects us to our higher selves and allows us to feel everything, including joy, more richly. Is judging those moments more valuable than fully feeling them? But what do we do when we feel disconnected, lonely, or lost? How do we remind ourselves that we are not alone? The beautiful, and sometimes paradoxical, part of life is that many different elements can coexist at once without negating one another; we can be thriving, and also devastated or heartbroken. Rather than searching for happiness, maybe we can just let ourselves feel our feelings and move towards what we love and what makes us whole. Each of the guests shares their strategies for reconnecting, grounding themselves, and regaining perspective. We hope you enjoy this episode and that you'll join the conversation and share your experiences for the enrichment of all of us!Podcast GuestsSukie BaxterBarbara SchulteChristine DicksonJane PikeCarla BauchmuellerMusic by Mark RashidPhotography by Crissi McDonald

What a treat of a conversation with Jane Pike of The Confident Rider for this episode of the Whole Horse Podcast! Before we even started recording, my face was hurting from giggling, and that spirit continued as we traversed territory around working with and not against our emotions with our horses, practical simple steps to restore regulation in our nervous systems and build in resilience, how to work with healthy activation and discomfort, and how to navigate losing our tempers with grace and growth, so that we can find better footing in the future. When she's not coaching her fabulous students, Jane hangs out with her beloved horses and family, in Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand. Jane is a US and NZ Board Approved Coach, Certified Mental Skills Coach, Registered NLP Coach and Practitioner, Yoga Therapist & Trauma Informed Movement Coach, Certified Master of Hypnotherapy and Certified Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator. I spoke with Jane Pike on Oct 21, 2020. We had a very insightful conversation not only about her journey to working with riders but also about how all her past experiences and roles prior to doing this work are incorporated in what she does to help people be the best they can be. She also shared observations and tools that help with connecting to intuition from the helping people who have gone through trauma or deal with pain to reconnect with their intuition when they don't always trust their body. So many ways that her work and insights can be applied in everyone's daily life. BioFor as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by two things: horses and well, how to be happy. What is it that makes us happy, successful, brave, bold? Why do some people end up sinking when others thrive? And what’s more, how do we be our best selves when it comes to showing up for our horses? To non-horsey people, it might be a stretch to see how human psychology and behaviour and horses blend together so seamlessly. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it is possible to have a horse/ rider relationship that’s purely transactional (we see it all the time across all disciplines). Where we ride for a result, and horses are just the means for us to get that result. There are loads of us though who know that as soon as you start to scratch the surface, then it’s pretty clear that if you want to take it to the next level you have to look yourself before you turn to your horse. We see that to create a partnership with our horses where we are both happy and purposeful in what we’re doing requires us to be integrated, emotionally connected and in charge of ourselves. That’s where the gold is.Integrated in that we are constantly developing our skills and methods in a way that’s ethical, empathetic and effective.Where we value the importance of emotional and intuitive intelligence as well as the intellectual stuff.Emotionally connected in that we can recognise how we feel and channel it effectively, which benefits not only our horses, but ourselves and those around us.Connected because at the end of the day, the connection is where the fulfilment lies. When I take all of this, what I see is that horses are my life practice. They have gifted me with insight and self-reflection. They prompt me to learn more about myself and how I operate in the world so that I can be the best horseperson possible. Best person possible.Horses and life. They are impossible to separate. I know there are many people out there who feel the same and chances are you are one of those people. I’m excited to adventure with you!I get to tie all the threads together- the mental and emotional skills we need- and present them in a way that allows you to develop a wholehearted and fulfilling relationship with your horse, no matter what you want to do together.https://confidentrider.online/Also find the Confident Rider on Facebook
