When bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines, it makes infections harder to treat. This increases the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death.  Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) leads to deaths, high health treatment costs, and economic and livelihood losses. Jennifer Cohn, Director, Global Access at Global Antibiotic R&D Partnership (GARDP), joins Ray Suarez to talk about the threat of AMR, and how to prevent it. On this episode, I'll be talking with Jennifer Cohn about her article "Moms for Liberty and the Dominionist Assault on America's 'Education Mountain'," published in the Bucks County Beacon. Cohen unmasks the extremist, Christian nationalist agenda shared by Moms for Liberty and organizations on the radical Christian right. We'll also talk about significant losses by Moms for Liberty-backed school board candidates in this November's elections - both here in PA and across the country. Does this signal the beginning of the end of Moms for Liberty and Christian nationalists? Or, will they double-down on their radical agenda heading into the 2024 presidential election? Jennifer Cohn is an attorney, election integrity advocate, and political essayist. David Waldman makes it to the weekend! But first, we finish up Jennifer Cohn's teardown of the Roger Stone business model, from his sadism to his deceitfulness.  It is difficult to pull off the entire “Roger Stone package”, although many Republicans are out there trying. In the dissembling camp there is of course George Santos, who is sort of the new “Lindsey Graham” but without the craftmanship. And there's Anna Paulina Luna, who is Ashke...”Nazi”...ish. Now there's Andy Ogles, internationally recognized as absolutely nothing he claims to be. There will always be Fox News… or maybe not. But, you just can't count out that bunch of contenders vying for the title in Georgia. In Camp Thug you have… Well, you don't have the Tiki Torch guy anymore, but you do have “Trump biker gangs”, still out there and ready to rumble wherever bigotry and violence are needed. If you are thinking something sounds familiar, perhaps you are recalling “Putin's biker gangs”, who are strangely similar in their methods and intentions. Domestic terrorists don't need biker gangs when they have the police to count on. And again, there's always Georgia. None of them can hold a candle to the former guy, the guy who brought mob criminality and Hollywood duplicity into political corruption.

The Long Game
What is Christian Nationalism, and what is it not? With Philip S. Gorski, author of "The Flag and the Cross"

The Long Game

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 13, 2022 46:30

The topic of Christian nationalism has been much in the news recently. Republican politicians like Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia both have claimed the term as their own, and Boebert in particular has loudly proclaimed that she does not believe in the separation of church and state. “I'm tired of this separation of church and state junk,” she said. “The church is supposed to direct the government; the government is not supposed to direct the church.”Perhaps the most aggressive Christian nationalist, despite his protestations about the term, is Pennsylvania's Doug Mastriano, a state senator who is the Republican nominee for governor in that state. Listen to Mastriano's comments in a 2021 zoom call a week before the January 6 insurrection, in which he baptizes conspiracy theories and his political will to power in the language of spiritual righteousness. That call was organized by a man named Jim Garlow, who is reportedly influential in something called the New Apostolic Reformation, which is a loosely connected network of men and women who call themselves apostles and prophets. These self-proclaimed divine emissaries claim that God speaks to them uniquely, and they claim authority over other people based on these grounds. Here's another example of the growing fusion throughout the country between religion and politics, in a way that confuses the two as one and the same rather than understanding them as separate but enhanced by one another if cross-pollinated in healthy ways. This is audio of an event this past July 1 in Atlanta, Georgia, in which two major figures in the NAR -- Lance Wallnau and Dutch Sheets, along with two other men, Mario Murillo and Hank Kunnemman, according to Jennifer Cohn of the Bucks County Beacon -- lead an audience in a vow to take over the U.S. government and impose a theocracy.Philip S. Gorski is an expert on Christian nationalism. He is the author of "The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy," along with Samuel L. Perry, a professor at Oklahoma University. Gorski is a sociology professor at Yale University and is the author of American Babylon: Christianity and Democracy Before and After Trump and American Covenant: A History of Civil Religion from the Puritans to the Present.Gorski has written this of Christian nationalism: it is "political idolatry dressed as religious orthodoxy."We talk about the ways that sometimes the term is used imprecisely to condemn anyone who is a Christian, and I ask him to help us explain the ways that political extremism, especially the growing willingness to discard democracy and pursue authoritarianism, can be motivated by this belief system. You can also check out David French's interview with Paul D. Miller about this topic here.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week I welcome Jennifer Cohn to the show. We'll be talking about her new article in the Bucks County Beacon, "Underreported And Massive Theocratic Movement Joins Forces With Michael Flynn And Roger Stone." She sounds the alarm about the New Apostolic Reformation, a Christian Nationalist, authoritarian movement that believes that "Christians must take control of government, business, and culture in order for Jesus to return to Earth." We might dismiss this movement as the lunatic fringe if they were not building strong connections with right-wing power and money, including former Trump National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn,  longtime Trump advisor, Roger Stone, and PA gubernatorial candidate, Doug Mastriano. Following Cohn's Bucks County Beacon article, Elle Hardy, writing in The New Republic, amplified the alarm about the rising influence of the New Apostolic Reformation and connections with Mastriano.  Jennifer Cohn is an attorney, election integrity advocate, and political essayist whose articles have appeared in the New York Review of Books, Who What Why, The Independent, TYT Investigates, The Brad Blog, Salon, and the Bucks County Beacon. As recently as 2006, the Voting Rights Act was renewed regularly by a unanimous vote of the senate. So what changed? Why did the Senate Republicans just block even opening debate on the Freedom to Vote Act last week, for the THIRD TIME? That's one of the many questions I'll ask of Jennifer Cohn, election security advocate, writer & attorney when she joins us on today's show. Once we get past the why this is happening, we'll find out the what... as in what evil plans they've put in motion to steal the next and subsequent elections. And they do it while they accuse our side of "the steal". These people project their worst impulses on to us. And as most children under the age of around 11 are quite familiar, they're playing the old "I'm rubber, you're glue" game... everything you say bounces off of me and sticks to you. Sadly, the result of this game is much more consequential. We truly risk losing what's left of this democracy..

Jennifer Cohn is an attorney and election integrity advocate. Since 2016 she has been drawing attention to problems with U.S. election security and was frustrated during the Trump admin years to see the GOP block efforts to improve security. Now that GOP has become the party of "the election is illegitimate", things have swung the other way and it is Democrats who seem unwilling to acknowledge flaws that many on that side were willing to talk about up until recently. We talk about how politics and polarization can impact attempts to solve election security problems, and she gives insights on the problems she sees with elections.

The ascension of Deb Haaland to Secretary of the Interior is both significant and historic. The first native American EVER to sit in a presidential cabinet. Just another win for the Biden-Harris team that is racking up victories and making their GOP counterparts look silly.  3,000,000 vaccines a day?!! Even in our wildest dreams, we couldn't envision that happening and yet here we are. This unprecedented mobilization of resources and expertise defies description. And then there is the Vatican, whose tone-deaf rejection of same-sex marriages demonstrates how out of touch the Catholic Church is with their flock. But hey, take heart! For the last four years, every day was filled with nothing but horror, embarrassment, and humiliation for anyone who didn't wear a red hat, at least we're mixing in some wins with the losses now. In this episode, Robin Biro and David Katzner bounce around the news cycle and then welcome Jennifer Cohn, a voting security expert who breaks down the realities behind the inexplicably bizarre and probably corrupt system of choosing which voting systems tabulate our votes. You've probably heard of Dominion (thanks to Rudy, Sydney, and The Pillow Guy!) but there's another company lurking behind some very strange goings-on.  Jennifer helps us make sense of it all. As always Robin ends the show with a palette cleanser that will surely make you smile.

We all remember Russia's interference in the last election and we know they are back this time, joined, it seems, by the Iranians. But foreign threats are not the only challenges to election security or the reliability of our results next week. We have the potential for domestic hacking, the possibility of voter suppression, the absence of verifiable audits in 47 out of 50 states, the unreliability of some systems, the track record of some election oversight officials for fiddling the results (we're looking at you Georgia), stacked courts, and the public posture of the President and his team that are calling results into question even before they have occured. How do we know the results are real? How do we protect the process? We discuss with three people who have been actively considering these issues, election security analyst and lawyer, Jennifer Cohn, David Sanger of the New York Times, and Rosa Brooks of Georgetown University Law Center. It's a discussion you should not miss.
