EPISODE 71 - “STEVE & NAN's FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1970s” - 1/20/2024 The 1970s was a decade that saw the rise of the auteur. Filmmakers like Scorsese, Coppola, Cassavetes, Altman, Lumet, and DePalma hit their stride and brought to the screen their specific vision and stylized films. It was a very experimental era where boundaries were pushed and once-taboo topics were explored. It became a creative high point and gave us some iconic movies. This week, Steve And Nan take look at some of their favorite films of the 1970s.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Terrance Malick and the Examined Life (2024), by Martin Woessner;  Films of the 1970s (2017), by Jurgen Muller; Hollywood's Last Golden Age: Politics, Society, and the Seventies Film in America (2012), by Jonathan Kirshner; How the Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll Generation Saved Hollywood (1998), by Peter Biskind; Picture Shows: The Life and Films of Peter Bogdonavich (1992), by Andrew Yule; “Jane Fonda on Klute,” July 18, 2019, The Criterion Collection;  TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; IBDB.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Smile (1975), starring Bruce Dern, Barbara Feldon, Michael Kidd, Nicholas Pryor, Annette O'Toole, Joan Prather, Melanie Griffith, Geoffrey Lewis, Maria O'Brien, Colleen Camp, Eric Shea, Denise Nickerson, and Titos Vandsis; Klute (1971), starring Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland, Roy Scheider, Dorothy Tristan, Charles Cioffi, Jean Stapleton, Rita Gam, and Vivian Nathan; Badlands (1973), starring Martin Sheen, Sissy Spacek, Warren Oates, Garry Littlejohn, Alan Vint, and John Womack; The Sting (1973), starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Saw, Robert Earl Jones, Charles Durning, Ray Walston, Charles Dierkop, Harold Gould, Sally Kellerman, and Eileen Brennan; The Last Picture Show (1971), starring Timothy Bottoms, Cybill Shepherd, Jeff Bridges, Ellen Burstyn, Ben Johnson, Cloris Leachman, Eileen Brennan, Clu Gulager, Sam Bottoms, Sharon Taggart, Randy Quad, and Bill Thurman; A Little Romance (1979), staring Laurence Olivier, Diane Lane, Thelonious Bernard, Arthur Hill, Sally Kellerman, Broderick Crawford, David Dukes, Andrew Duncan, and Claudette Sutherland; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 15, 2024 is: hegemony • hih-JEM-uh-nee • noun Hegemony refers to influence or control over another country, group of people, etc. // The two nations have for centuries struggled for regional hegemony. See the entry > Examples: “Beyond Hollywood's scrambled economics, one of the biggest threats to its hegemony is social media—TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X-formerly-known-as-Twitter—with which it has always had an uncomfortable relationship, alternately its victim or master.” — Peter Biskind, The Hollywood Reporter, 26 Jan. 2024 Did you know? Hegemony refers to a kind of domination. It was borrowed in the mid-16th century from the Greek word hēgemonia, a noun formed from the verb hēgeisthai, “to lead.” At first hegemony was used specifically to refer to the control once wielded by ancient Greek states; later it was applied to domination by other political actors. By the 19th century, the word had acquired a second sense referring to the social or cultural influence wielded by a dominant entity over others of its kind, a sense employed by design scholar Joshua Langman when describing the use of found objects by French artist Marcel Duchamp (he of notorious readymade Fountain fame) as a means “to question and criticize the values of the artistic hegemony by eschewing craft entirely.”

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

In the glorious days of the 70s and early 80s in the US, there was a birth of auteurs and a move towards independent films and away from huge legacy studio systems. Just a few of the names associated with this movement, captured controversially by author Peter Biskind in his book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, were Peter Bogdanovich, Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas. All have made film that is memorialized as some of the finest or most ground-breaking in history. All have had, not only success, but their share of misses, as one must when aiming high. But joining them and others in their auteur cohort is a producer and especially a director who, I believe, has changed American and world cinema. A writer, director, producer, actor, conservator of film, a film historian. A man whose background and family bent him, luckily for us, in the direction of the dreams of cinema. And a director who has had to pull himself up repeatedly to make important films, who has gone from critical and monetary successes to works that were underappreciated in their time or missed their audience completely. Laurie Collyer‘s credits include Sherrybaby (2006) which won numerous awards including the National Board of Review's Award for Top Independent Film in 2006 and a Golden Globe nomination for actress Maggie Gyllenhaal; the documentary Nuyorican Dream (1999) which received much acclaim including a DGA nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement and a Grand Jury Prize nomination at the Sundance Film Festival; Sunlight Jr. (2013) starring Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon which premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival; and the miniseries The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe for Lifetime TV, for which she was nominated for another DGA Award. In televison she has directed multiple episodes of Showtime's Billions, NBC's Law & Order: SVU and Apple TV+'s The Me You Can't See. Laurie Collyer IMDB Scarecrow is a 1973 American road movie directed by Jerry Schatzberg and starring Gene Hackman and Al Pacino. The story involves the relationship between two men who travel from California seeking to start a business in Pittsburgh. At the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, the film tied for the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film, the highest honor. While it fared poorly commercially, Scarecrow later gained cult status. In a review of Scarecrow upon its 2013 rerelease, Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian described the film as "a freewheeling masterpiece," describing Hackman and Pacino as giving "the performances of their lives." Peter Biskind has described the film as of "secondary" significance in his book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Henry Jaglom, Renowned Writer & Director About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Henry Jaglom, is a renowned and highly respected writer, director and playwright, whose body of work reflects his life long dedication to truth, honesty and authenticity in his artistic expression.    He trained with Lee Strasberg at The Actor's Studio in New York, where he acted, wrote and directed plays.  He then made his way to Hollywood, first as an actor in movies including “Psych-Out”, “Drive, He Said”, and “The Last Movie”, and then as a filmmaker.  He wrote and directed such classics as “A Safe Place”, “Sitting Ducks”, “Tracks”, “Can She Bake a Cherry Pie”, “Eating”, “Last Summer in the Hamptons”, “New Year's Day”, “Hollywood Dreams”, “Deja Vu”, and my personal favourite, “Train to Zakopané”.   He's worked with some amazing actors including Jack Nicholson, Lee Grant, Maximillian Schell, Dennis Hopper, Roddy McDowell, Vanessa Redgrave, Faye Dunaway, David Duchovny – and he made 3 movies with Orson Welles, with whom he formed a deep friendship.  In fact, in 2014, a fascinating book by film historian Peter Biskind was released, entitled, “My Lunches with Orson”, based on a series of previously unreleased recordings, of private conversations between our guest and Orson Welles every week over lunch at the famous “Ma Maison” restaurant in Hollywood.  The book provides the most riveting and revealing insight into the enigmatic, wickedly witty and restlessly intelligent person that Orson Welles really was.    Our guest is widely considered to be a cinematic genius and a true maverick of American cinema – so much so, that he's the subject of a fascinating 1995 documentary entitled, “Who is Henry Jaglom?”    Well, my friends, you're about to find out.   For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ https://www.facebook.com/henry.jaglom/ https://mobile.twitter.com/henryjaglomhttps://www.youtube.com/user/HenryJaglom #henryjaglom      #harveybrownstoneinterviews

The Origins of Russian Roulette

The concept of Russian Roulette has a very interesting history and over time, this soldiers' trick game became a dangerous film stunt. In this episode we're re-watching the Deer Hunter, the first film made about the Vietnam War after it ended, which featured scenes of POWs (and paid participants in back-alley gambling houses) playing what we know as "Russian Roulette", in which two participants shoot a revolver at their own heads with a bullet randomly placed into one chamber of the gun. If you like our content please become a patron to support us, and you'll get our public episodes ad-free. It turns out that the history of Russian Roulette started as a ficitonal plot device but became more "real" for lack of a better word when it made it to American film audiences, as multiple people have actually died imitating the scenes from the movie with real guns and real bullets. The film was a massive success for the director Michael Cimino, it was nominated for 9 Oscars and won 5 of them. It also launched the career of Meryl Streep, who was the lead actress of the film alongside her tragically dying lover at the time, John Cazale, who passed away from cancer shortly after the film was completed. Christopher Walken and Robert De Niro also starred in the film, and they of course went on to great acting careers as well. 1 Long term success was not in the cards for Cimino, however. He tried to rip off the author of the Deer Hunter, Deric Washburn, when the original story was modified into a film script but history has proven Washburn to be a more capable writer than Cimino. Cimino's next film, Heaven's Gate, was a massive failure that actually bankrupt United Artists, the studio which financed it. While the film industry is distinctly American, Sandra's home country was not spared having to sit through all 3 and a half hours of the Deer Hunter either, she has a hilarious story of the one lady who translated all bootleg American films during the last days of communism, to varying degrees of accuracy. Irina Margareta Nistor was the voice of everyone in a film she translated, and thus the voice of American film for many Romanians. Sadly the title of the Deer Hunter was not available when she translated it back in the 1980s and it came out as "Dear Hunter" which Sandra says is still a running joke today. 2 We also talk about other dangerous (or marketed as dangerous) film stunts, such as the tragic deaths of Vic Morrow and two children on John Landis's set for the film version of The Twilight Zone in the 1980s, The multiple cases of accidental shootings on film sets most notably Brandon Lee's fatal shooting on the set of The Crow, and Alec Baldwin's accidental shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust. 3, 4 1. In Episode 42, Team Vintage Sand returns yet again to the source of some of our most popular episodes: Danny Peary's hard-to-find 1993 classic "Alternative Oscars". In the past, we have used Peary's model to approach the Best Picture Academy Awards from the 1930's, the 1950's, the 1970's, the 1980's and the 2000's. For this episode, we hop in the Way-Back Machine and travel to one of the most interesting periods in film history: the 1990's. As best described in Peter Biskind's must-read book "Down and Dirty Pictures", that decade began with the promise of an honest-to-goodness revival of independent films emerging from smaller companies, most notably Miramax. It was also marked by the rise of the Sundance Festival, a time long before that event became the completely corporatized show it is now. That period, from roughly 1989-1995, witnessed the arrival of such new voices as Steven Soderbergh, Richard, Linklater, Todd Haynes, Kevin Smith, Carl Franklin, John Dall and most notably Quentin Tarantino. But that fertile era came to a crashing halt with the sale of Miramax to Disney, and the subsequent absorption of most of the smaller production companies into the studio conglomerates. As a result, things turned a bit flabby in the middle of the decade, only to return with a boom in 1999, considered by many film historians to be one of the great years in the history of the medium. Another interesting aspect of the 90's with regards to the Oscars is that unlike in the other decades which we have examined, the Academy made an unusual number of solid choices for Best Picture, such as "The Silence of the Lambs", "Unforgiven" and "Schindler's List". Who could argue with that? (Hint: us.) But there were plenty of head scratchers as well, such as "Dances with Wolves" over "Goodfellas", "The English Patient" over "Fargo" and perhaps most egregiously, "Forrest Gump" over "Pulp Fiction". So kick back, relax and join us as we return to a uniquely fascinating decade, and remember: you're entering a world of pain, Smokey. A world of pain…

The prize-winning novelist William Boyd has set his latest novel, Love Is Blind, at the turn of the 20th century. He tells Amol Rajan how his young Scottish protagonist travels across Europe in a tale of obsession, passion and music. Lust and violence combine in Strauss's opera Salome in which a young princess performs the Dance of the Seven Veils for the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Director Adena Jacobs has put a bold new spin on the story for English National Opera in her psychologically challenging interpretation. Nietzsche may have written the famous phrase 'God is dead' but he also wrote movingly about love, guilt and hate. Biographer Sue Prideaux argues that Nietzsche is one of the most misunderstood philosophers. She explodes prevailing myths that he was a Nazi-sympathising, humourless misogynist. And popular culture is under the spotlight in the film critic Peter Biskind's latest book, The Sky is Falling. He argues that zombies, androids and superheroes heralded the age of political extremism. Producer: Katy Hickman.

Does it matter what we watch and read? Is it possible for a film to be just entertainment or are the stories that our mass media tells us shaping how we see the world? Peter Biskind, author of The Sky Is Falling: How Vampires, Zombies, Androids, and Superheroes Made America Great For Extremism has been covering this territory for a while. Jessa calls him to discuss our current love of disaster and revenge and what that reveals about the current American psyche. ---SUBSCRIBE to the #PublicIntellectual #Patreon page to access BONUS CONTENT, EARLY EPISODE RELEASES, SHOW NOTES, MERCH and more: www.Patreon.com/PublicIntellectualPLEASE SUBSCRIBE AND RATE US on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.PUBLIC INTELLECTUAL IS A FOREVER DOG PODCASThttp://foreverdogproductions.com/fdpn/podcasts/public-intellectual/

In this interview, filmmaker Henry Jaglom describes the Orson Welles he knew and loved. Their friendship began in 1970, when the upstart Jaglom impertinently asked Welles to be in his first movie ("A Safe Place") and the master improbably assented, and it continued until Welles's death in 1985. They were frequent dining companions at LA's then-trendy Ma Maison, and Henry recorded many of their conversations. Now film historian Peter Biskind has transcribed and edited some of the Welles-Jaglom tapes into a book, "My Lunches with Orson." Though the dishy parts have drawn most of the media attention, I was more interested in the sheer breadth and insight (both Orson's and Henry's) on display.
