David Sirota Goes to the Oscars

Click here for the full episode, including the extended interview with David Sirota and a Biden Stoned Moment. David Sirota, whose site Daily Poster is now The Lever, returns to Useful Idiots as an Academy-Award nominee for his movie Don't Look Up. And he's got a message for the Oscars: We've got to do something today about climate change. It's like a giant comet is headed towards earth and no one seems to care. “The movie's giant audience proves that you don't have to choose between focusing on important things and not having a big audience, or focusing on stupid, silly things and getting a big audience.” In this interview, David gives us the fun stuff: a tour of his celebrity sitings and stories; and then the dark stuff: Fossil fuels: “Why are we preserving an industry and jobs if in 10 or 20 years, the livable ecosystem that supports all human life is going to be significantly deteriorated or gone?” And student debt: “Student debt and Joe Biden are a 40-year story. You have to understand how motivated he has been, how much he believes in the idea of student debt. He has been a sculptor of the laws in this country that govern debt for 40 years.” To put it lightly, David Sirota doesn't trust Joe Biden. “If you want to tell people not to believe anything politicians say, if you really want to deeply disillusion people to not believe the government will ever do something concrete and permanent to help, that seems to be the message that Joe Biden is trying to deliver. “This is how you turn a country into the joker.” Plus, dems are confused why drug prices (that they set) are so high, Marjorie Taylor Greene thinks we're pro-pedophile, and a total jerk-off on a flight. It's all this, and more, on this week's episode of Useful Idiots. Check it out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

While podcast commentator Joe Rogan continues to ignite controversy as a source of false claims about the COVID pandemic, the roots of such widespread falsehoods are examined in a recent investigative report. Journalist Alex Kotch, co-author of the report “How the Koch Network Hijacked the War on Covid,” tells the story of how that corporate-bankrolled campaign originally started and how it has continued to supplant public health experts and hijack the governmental response to the pandemic. The report was produced by a partnership of the Center for Media and Democracy and The Daily Poster. Alex Kotch is senior investigative reporter at the Center for Media and Democracy and co-founder and executive director of the OptOut Media Foundation.

How The Koch Network Hijacked The War On Covid Center for Media and Democracy exposedbycmd.org- PRWatch prwatch.org- SourceWatch sourcewatch.o rg  Bio: Alex is an investigative reporter with the Center for Media and Democracy. A campaign finance expert, Alex helped launch money-in-politics website Sludge, and his work has been published by more than two dozen media outlets including The American Prospect, The Nation, and Vice.com. David Armiak-608-515-4040David is research director for the Center for Media and Democracy. CMD is a nationally recognized government and corporate watchdog that leads in-depth investigations into the corruption that undermines our democracy, environment, and economic prosperity. CMD's groundbreaking exposés are featured on the blog ExposedbyCMD.org. CMD also publishes SourceWatch, an encyclopedia of corporations, corporate special interest groups and their leaders; and specialized investigative websites, including ALECExposed.org. This story was produced in partnership with The Daily Poster. Earlier this month, as the Omicron variant began to spread, a small liberal arts school on a tree-lined campus in Michigan called Hillsdale College announced it was launching an Academy for Science and Freedom to “educate the American people about the free exchange of scientific ideas and the proper relationship between freedom and science in the pursuit of truth.” The academy was inspired by the pandemic. “As we reflect on the worst public health fiasco in history, our pandemic response has unveiled serious issues with how science is administered,” noted the college president in a press release. But the venture isn't exactly an effort to apply science to the Covid-19 crisis. The so-called “fiasco” was government pandemic measures like mask and vaccine mandates, contact tracing, and lockdowns. Hillsdale is a conservative Christian institution with ties to the Trump administration. And the scholars behind the academy — Scott Atlas, Jay Bhattacharya, and Martin Kulldorff — are connected to right-wing dark money attacking public health measures.  The trio also has ties to the Great Barrington Declaration, a widely-rebuked yet influential missive that encouraged governments to adopt a “herd immunity” policy letting Covid-19 spread largely unchecked. The new academy appears to be the latest effort to provide intellectual cover to a nearly two-year campaign by right-wing and big business interests to force a return to normalcy to boost corporate profits amid a pandemic that is now surging once again thanks to Omicron.  This is the story of how that corporate-bankrolled campaign succeeded in supplanting public health experts and hijacking governmental response to the pandemic.  The War On Public Health When COVID began its spread across the United States in early March 2020, states responded by locking down to varying extents. All 24 Democratic governors and 19 of the 26 Republican governors issued weeks-long stay-at-home orders and restrictions on non-essential businesses.  Lockdown measures drove down cases in the U.S. and likely saved millions of lives globally. But the decline of in-person shopping and work, combined with factory shutdowns in places like China, disrupted the economy. A 2020 report from the corporate consulting firm McKinsey & Co. found the hardest-hit industries would take years to recover.  One sector in particular that took a big hit was the fossil fuel industry. Oil demand fell sharply in 2020, placing the global economy on uncertain footing.  Before long, business-aligned groups — particularly those connected to fossil fuels — began targeting the public health measures threatening their bottom lines. Chief among them were groups tied to billionaire Charles Koch, owner of Koch Industries, the largest privately held fossil fuel company in the world. The war on public health measures began on March 20, 2020, when Americans For Prosperity (AFP), the right-wing nonprofit founded by Charles and David Koch, issued a press release calling on states to remain open.  “We can achieve public health without depriving the people most in need of the products and services provided by businesses across the country,” it read.  A month later, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a business lobbying group partially funded by Koch Industries, published a letter calling on President Donald Trump to enable states to reopen. That letter was signed by over 200 state legislators and “stakeholders,” including leaders from Koch-funded groups like the Texas Public Policy Foundation and the James Madison Institute.  To fight its war, the Koch network also relied on the astroturf roadmap behind the anti-government Tea Party movement, using its dark money apparatus to coordinate anti-lockdown protests. Participants for a number of anti-lockdown rallies were recruited by FreedomWorks, a dark money group tied to Charles Koch instrumental in organizing Tea Party protests in 2009. Several of the 2020 rallies were also promoted by the Convention of States Action, a group founded by an organization with ties to the Koch network and hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer that wants to rewrite the U.S. Constitution. In Michigan, a major event was organized by the Michigan Freedom Fund, a nonprofit funded by the family of Trump's secretary of education, Betsy DeVos. Groups funded by the Kochs and their colleagues also turned to a more insidious form of combat adapted from Tea Party strategies: building an academic and intellectual network that would create and promote its own “science” to attack COVID mitigation policies. “Build Up Immunity… Through Natural Infection” On October 4, 2020, the Great Barrington Declaration was released to the world. Authored by Stanford University professor Jay Bhattacharya, former Harvard Medical School professor Martin Kulldorff, and Oxford University professor Sunetra Gupta, the declaration recommended governments allow younger, healthier people to become infected with Covid-19 while reserving “focused protection” for the vulnerable, in order to reach herd immunity. Suggestions included having nursing homes limit staff rotations and businesses rely on workers with “acquired immunity.” “The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection,” read the declaration.  The document boasted a veneer of academic legitimacy. Its credentialed authors wrote the letter at a conference hosted by the auspicious-sounding American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. According to the declaration's website, the letter has since been signed by more than 2,700 “Medical and Public Health Scientists,” and “none of the authors or co-signers received any money, honoraria, stipend, or salary from anyone.” But the declaration arose out of the world of right-wing dark money and corporate interests, and many of its signatories aren't verified.  AIER, which hosted and filmed the conference and registered the declaration's website, is a Koch-tied libertarian think tank. From 2018 to 2020, the Charles Koch Foundation donated more than $100,000 to the institute. And before that, the Koch Foundation donated nearly $1.5 million to the Emergent Order Foundation, formerly Emergent Order LLC, a PR firm that engaged in hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of marketing consulting for AIER. AIER has also received $54,000 from the Atlas Network, an anti-regulation group formerly known as the Atlas Economic Research Foundation that has received more than a half million dollars from the Charles Koch Foundation and the connected Charles Koch Institute. The Atlas Network also pocketed nearly $3.9 million from DonorsTrust, a dark money fund connected to wealthy right-wing donors such as Koch and Mercer, and its sister group, Donors Capital Fund.  In exchange, AIER has provided fellowships to academics in several Koch-funded programs. That includes economist Peter Boettke, the former president of the Mont Pelerin Society, of which Charles Koch has been a member, and Michael Munger, an adjunct scholar at the Koch-backed Cato Institute. AIER's trustees include Benjamin Powell, director of the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech University, which has received millions from the Koch network. Powell is known for his defense of sweatshops. Bhattacharya, co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration, is a former research fellow at the Hoover Institution, which received $430,000 from Charles Koch's foundation between 2017 and 2018, as well as $1.4 million from the dark money fund DonorsTrust from 2016 to 2020. Since then, Bhattacharya has appeared in multiple Hoover video programs. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host David Dayen, executive editor of the American Prospect, and David Sirota, founder of the Daily Poster.  - MR Live 10/29/21 It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host David Dayen, executive editor of the American Prospect, as they walk through as much of the two hundred policies in the Bipartisan Infrastructure framework as possible, and David Sirota, founder of the Daily Poster, joins in the fun half, to discuss his new podcast, “Meltdown” The former David (Dayen) first takes on his summary of why the infrastructure battle was a failure for Democrats, starting with complete mismanagement of expectations of what could make it into the bill, how they imagined their success in making it bipartisan, before he dives into the failure to optimize what they could do as the constraints became more clear. Working into the effects of the Manchin-Sinematic wrecking, David explores the waste of the 1.75 trillion top-line through provisions that include 90 billion for “equity,” and other nonexistent policies, effectively weakening the parts of the bill that democrats, and Americans, actually want. He also covers what could've been another use of these “ornamental” provisions, which work to build up the total spending, using their necessity to ensure that Republicans will still pass them, while removing them from the spending equation, including hundreds of billions for anti-trust, privacy bureau, and bolstering fisheries. While recognizing the obvious fault of Democratic leadership, Dayen, Emma, and Sam discuss the role of non-profits in tandem with the progressive caucus and Democratic base in pressuring expectations on the party, forcing a packaging of the entire agenda into a single bill, resulting in practically no lasting structural policy, before they dive into what (or who) has stood in the way of specific climate and pharmaceutical policy, from Manchin's rejection of penalties for unsustainable energy to the countless Pharma-bolstered representatives that fought back against the government's negotiating capacity. Next, they move onto the policy put forwards for our children, including universal pre-k and an extension of the Child Tax Credit, alongside the bureaucratizing of childcare provisions to hinder their utility, before they wrap up the interview by touching on the restructuring of Medicare funding and corporate and white-collar taxes. And in the Fun Half: David Sirota joins Emma and Sam to discuss his upcoming 8 part investigative podcast, “Meltdown,” covering the collapse of the Democratic party in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, with Obama's promises and their opposition (his policy) working to undermine faith in our government, as a top-down (emphasis on top, not so much on down) bailout left homeowners struggling for agency, and gave room for a rebirth of the Republican party in the shadow of Bush's failures, and eventually paved the way for Donald Trump's election. Emma and Sam also touch on Ben Shapiro's claim that climate change, the threat of which he has constantly been downplaying for years, is now “baked into the cake,” John Eastman talks representing the rural republicans at the Claremont Institute Gala, and Zuck shows us his metaverse, plus, your IMs! After the promise of major legislation that would rival the impact of FDR's New Deal, Joe Biden's Build Back Better agenda has been sucked dry by corporate America and their pawns in the Senate. Instead of massive new programs to help children, parents, students, the elderly and all us by dealing with the climate crisis, Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema appear to have brought the $3.5 trillion bill down to some crumbs. And rather than having it all paid for by taxing the wealthy, they may be putting a halt to that plan, as well. This is a monumental disaster that will not only hurt the American people, but will once again expose the Democratic party as weak, feckless, and still in the grasp of Wall Street, the pharmaceutical industry and the usual special interests. Turnout for the 2022 midterm elections will be suffocated and the Republican party will feast on the Democrats' stupidity and ride back into power on it (with Trump waiting in the wings in 2024). Mike's joined by a great journalist and former Bernie speechwriter, David Sirota, to talk about where things stand and discuss the need for progressives in congress to HOLD THE LINE and not support these bills moving forward unless items like Paid Family Leave, Medicare Expansion, and taxing the ultra-rich are put back in. Progressives hold the line, forcing Nancy Pelosi to postpone a vote on the $1 trillion Kyrsten Sinima promoted the “bi-partisan” (aka the fossil fuel) infrastructure bill.  Meanwhile, Joe Manchin says he won't support a reconciliation bill larger than  $1.5 trillion - $2 trillion less than the compromise package and $4.5trillion less than the original package.  Some West Virginia kayactivists paddle up to Joe Manchin's yacht, ask him better questions than most of the beltway media, and get more from him that any cable news show.  Writing in his newsletter The Daily Poster, David Sirota reported Thursday that: Joe Manchin backed a huge bank bailout for Wall Street execs almost 13 years ago to the day. That's just rich as he deridedan "entitlement mentality" as a reason to kill the reconciliation bill that would help millions of people struggling to survive. The Wall St execs then bankrolled him. Greta Thunberg chastises world leaders about their climate change “blah, blah, blah,” over the past several decades; she calls for immediate, decisive action.  FEMA is removing subsidies for flood insurance as claims are expected to rise significantly due to the effects of climate change. Insurance premiums are expected to rise 18% per year for at least the next 20 years, particularly in areas already prone to flood.  Twenty-three species have been removed from the endangered species list. But this is not good news. They are being removed because they have been declared extinct. In the 50 years since the passages of the Endangered Species Act. Until Wednesday's announcement, only 11 species have been removed from the list - until today, that is.  Are you ready for some serious snail mail? “Beginning Friday, the U.S. Postal Service will start to "implement new service standards" for first class mail and periodicals — slowing its target delivery time by about 30%,” USPS spokesperson Kim Frum told NPR. Back in the day there were the “sewer socialists;” today, “sidewalk socialists” are making the theoretical question about what it would mean to govern as a socialist into a very practical one. Rebecca Burns of In These Times has a great article on the victories of India Walton in the Buffalo Democratic Mayoral primary and over 60 DSA-backed candidates who have been elected to local office from Denver to Chicago to Knoxville, TN.  Supreme Court Justice and all-around horrible human being, Brett Kavanaugh, tests positive for COVID-19 just a few days before the new term begins. Before you have to google it, yes, he's been vaccinated. Just didn't want to get anyone's hopes up.  Pennsylvania House Republicans shoot down their own school voucher bill.  They were planning on giving vouchers to parents of students who didn't want to wear masks and let them go to school districts or private schools that do not have masking requirements. House Republicans advanced their voter suppression agenda once again.  They voted House Bill 1800 out of committee and a series of constitutional amendments that would politicize the Secretary of State's office, mandate voter ID, establish election audits and more. About 3,000 people showed up in Harrisburg for a maskless, superspreader Pro-Life rally. Sean didn't want to get close to that thing even with his zoom lens.  Tomorrow, Women's Marches are happening around the country tomorrow including right here in the Commonwealth. Rallies will take place in Harrisburg @ 11 am. You can look for a rally times and locations near you by going to https://map.womensmarch.com/. Cyril Mychalejko - Central York High School students light a path for student uprisings in Bucks County and across the Commonwealth.  Happy Birthday to NASA. Yes, on this day in 1958 the legendary space agency was born! On Oct. 1, 1958, NASA was born!  The FAA is investigating Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin about safety measures after an explosive letter published by a group of 21 employees blue the whistle on the company's move to cut safety corners, pressuring employees to works long hours, in a rush to try and gain government contracts and compete with SpaceX.  The letter also alleges that there is a toxic working environment at the company, especially for women.

That doesn't stop them from proclaiming it as fact. We live in strange times when otherwise intelligent people spew lies and proclaim them as facts. Even some who call themselves "news" organizations. So it's a good thing when a new, independent news organization takes off. Today, we'll celebrate one of those. Sam and Emma host David Sirota, founder of and editor at The Daily Poster, to discuss the tough developments around progressive hopes for the Biden Administration, including bipartisan dead-ends, bad-faith attacks on Ilhan Omar, and the possibilities of filibuster reform in the Senate. Sam, Emma, and David touch on the power of narcissistic spotlight syndrome, and how it presents differently from Manchin to Sinema, before they look into the Manchin human shield theory and how Democrats manage to hit the emotional core of the donor class without working the rules to get things done. They chat about how the party of “hope and change” is seemingly afraid of making actual structural change, how the role of the federal government in spearheading progress has all but disappeared, and what the best tactic is to bring the Left into the discussion of Manchin's niche view of bipartisanship. They round out the discussion on how democratic leadership's continued vilification of Ilhan Omar spotlights the party's hypocrisy, choosing to hide their own stances on tough issues over centering genuine policy change. Then, Andrew Callaghan, creator of Channel 5, joins to discuss his chaotic documentation of the fringes of America, from the connections between the wellness community and Q-anon, to conspiracies around the deaths of celebrities like Prince and Kobe. They end on discussions of exploitation in the media industry, and Andrew enquires about Crowder's cringe and cold feet. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk about getting cops off the street without boosting the surveillance state, why the country reopening has seen a boom in demand reasonably not met by supply, and watch Ryan Grim stick by his leftist roots and provide Emily Jashinsky with free education on WWII. Tucker Carlson then continues his discomforting obsession with AOC, particularly around the topics of fertility and womanhood, and Dave Rubin shows off his arts and crafts skills, constructing a perfect straw man, before Sam ponders a debate with Ben Shapiro on his roles as the King of the Jews and quick-talking fascist and Fox & Friends draws the line from Critical Race Theory to… China. Emma and Sam finish it off with Ron Paul's BitCon speech on the entertainment of the pandemic, and the unsurprising fact that a Bitcoin convention promoting these beliefs resulted in a COVID outbreak, plus, your IMs! We have a very interesting episode for you today. In our second, feature segment we speak with Aaron O'Brian and Jason Gusman of the true crime podcast Return to Snakeland. It centers around the mysterious murder of high school student Kathy Herold in the summer of 1985. Content warning: some of the details are graphic. Aaron and Jason were students at the same school in Kenmore, NY and were haunted by the murder and the subsequent bungling of the case by investigators. Their research began with Jason's blog in the mid 2000's. As a result Aaron and Jason met and turned the story into a fictionalized graphic novel. Feeling the story deserved more attention, they began their podcast this May of 2021 and are currently releasing episodes weekly on Wednesdays. We enjoy the podcast as it focuses on the tragedy and humanity of the story, and not the gruesome details. You can find more information on their website. Photo credit: Getty Images This week is President Joe Biden's 100th day in office, and so The Daily Poster's latest podcast takes a look at Biden's personnel appointments to see whether or not his administration has been captured by corporate interests. On the podcast, Sirota talked with Max Moran of the Revolving Door Project and David Segal of Demand Progress, two groups that have been pressuring Biden to stock his administration with progressive appointees, rather than corporate cronies. The Revolving Door Project recently issued a report card on Biden's first 100 days, which you can find here. This newsletter relies on readers pitching in to support it. A few weeks ago, The Daily Poster noted that the exclusion of a $15 minimum wage from the American Rescue Plan was a missed opportunity and a tragic failure. Then again, our reporting also pointed out same bill's direct aid to millions of people was an enormous victory and a huge success for a grassroots movement that has so changed politics that even a former longtime austerian like Joe Biden ended up signing legislation that included those investments.  On this podcast, I talked to author Anand Giridharadas about the idea of losing and winning — and whether or not we are finally moving out of the Reagan Era and into a new epoch of positive change. He is the author of the fantastic book Winners Take All and has a great newsletter called The Ink.  During the discussion, we talked about how to simultaneously remember the awful and unforgivable parts of Biden's senate record, remain circumspect about his commitment to progressive change, criticize his ongoing capitulations, but also acknowledge some of the victories that are being won during the early weeks of his presidency.  As you listen to this podcast, please know: I've spent a lot of my life standing up to Biden. As a young person, I was ostracized by powerful Democrats for daring to criticize his bankruptcy bill. As a reporter, I wrote one of the definitive pieces exposing his pernicious role in the student debt crisis. As a campaign staffer, I spotlighted his efforts to cut Social Security. And now as the founder of The Daily Poster, I've been leading a team of reporters that has continued to scrutinize his actions. The point is: I'm under no illusions about who Biden is. But I also know that politics is much bigger than any one politician — and that the best reporting is the kind that focuses on the policy. I hope you'll listen to this whole podcast because it delves into lots of issues that so many Daily Poster subscribers have raised over the last few weeks. Rock the boat, Sirota Thank you for subscribing. Leave a comment or share this episode.

Why do Democratic politicians try to means-test every social program to the point where they become incomprehensibly complex? Will stock market populism save the republic from the predators on Wall Street? The Daily Poster discussed these topics and more this week with Thomas Frank, the famed author of classics such as What's The Matter With Kansas and Listen, Liberal. Tom and Sirota review The Daily Poster's reporting over the course of the last week, and focus in on Democrats' obsession with means testing and how that undermines universalist social programs. They also discuss the GameStop controversy and how it at once threatens Wall Street kingpins but also celebrates the kind of market populism that was first touted in the boom-bust 1990s. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
