In Hour 1 we welcome back Taraval celebrating the release of his new EP 'Aardvark', which is out on Four Tet's Text Records today. The title track has been whipping festivals and dance floors into a frenzy all summer long when played by the likes of Four Tet, Daphni, Floating Points amongst others, getting many Track ID requests and features in this mix. The San Francisco based producer also has a background as a band member in Caribou. He told us; "Always exciting to get to mix for Solid Steel. This one features a lot of music I’ve discovered and loved in 2018, plus a couple of tracks from my Aardvark EP on Text Records out on Oct 19. I recorded this live at Crowbar Corner studios, a new and very inspiring place in San Francisco I share with a bunch of artists. It starts off in an aquatic groove then shifts into some psych-y techno then dissolves into some American drones and tones old and new." Since 1995 he has promoted countless classic events in Stockholm - besides generally being a strong force in the Swedish Techno scene. Some of Kim’s main inspiration derives from the early Swedish Techno scene, where fellow artists like Cari Lekebusch, Adam Beyer, Joel Mull and Jesper Dahlback where amongst the fore front. His own sound has been colored by anything from Hip-Hop artists like Onyx and Mobb Deep to James Ruskin, Carl Cox and Eric Prydz. It can best be described by himself. “I always look for that specific drive in a dancefloor track and never really mind any particular genres. But overall i tend to get attracted by drum and percussion based stuff. Born in the suburbs of Rotterdam in the early eighties, Paul Hazendonk already developed an excessive interest for music at a young age. After seeing a documentary about one of the early editions of the Mystery Land festival he found his passion and bought his first DJ equipment at age twelve. After winning various local DJ contests in his teens, he secured his first club gigs by the time he turned eighteen and his first international gigs followed not long after. In his early twenties Paul was a resident DJ at infamous Dutch clubs Las Palmas (Rotterdam) and Asta (The Hague), whilst being a regular guest at clubs and festivals all over Europe. Throughout the years he has performed in more than 25 countries worldwide. In 2000 he started working at the legendary record store Basic Beat which was located in the heart of Rotterdam. This was also the place where he released his first mix compilation CD's, started doing A&R for various labels and, eventually, where he started his Manual Music label in 2005. Paul left the Basic Beat company in 2009 and adapted the Manual brand name for his own company, simply calling it Manual Music. Having always been a DJ first and a producer second, it wasn't until a couple of years into his career that Paul released his first records. By now he has released music on respectable labels such as Hope Recordings, Diynamic, Sudbeat, Proton Music, Sleaze Records, Einmusika and naturally his own Manual Music amongst many others. In 2014 he released his long awaited debut album 'Adapt' which again showed his versatility as a producer, working together with vocalists such as Sian Evans (Kosheen), Alice Rose, Patchy and spoken word wizard The Lazarusman next to collaborations with Noraj Cue and Olaf Stuut. Although people like to genre-tag artists nowadays, it's not easy to do the same with Paul Hazendonk. Emanuele Millozzi was born in Rome in 1985. He started attending the Techno and Progressive parties in his hometown when he was just a teenager, ending up very often spending his Sundays in the raves and remaining fascinated by them... Over the years he understands that electronic music is more than a passion for him and begins to approach the first sequencer, at the same time he bought his first console and begins to externalize all these feelings that music had always resulted in him...so begins a journey that takes him across several musical styles, his mind lives and feeds from the atmosphere breathe in the clubs that are continuously part of his life and elaborates by proposing personal ideas of the sounds that hit him. Meanwhile, time passes and his dj-sets are beginning to be appreciated so much that led him to perform in the period 2008-2011 in some of the best parties in Italy in spaces dedicated to emerging Djs as the "darkroom" of the famous and "Diabolika @ Nrg Superclub" and the "Bar "of "Traintek @ Rashomon Club",established techno party in which he performed in sets of 4 hands with his friend Claudio Petroni with whom he often collaborate in the studio at that time. At the same time his technique in music production grows and its products are now published by high-profile labels and collect even 2 vinyl releases that are soon sold out so his sound gets strength and confidence. In a short time his works are published on the label which, in time order : AFULAB, Land Of Voodoo Nutempo, Miniaturesrec,Elektrax,!Organism, Illegal Alien and his promos receive positive feedback and are played by DJs such as Chris Liebing, Richie Hawtin, Speedy J, Len Faki, Phil Kieran,Dubfire, Jesper Dahlback, Dj Emerson, Markantonio, Slam, Xpansul, Thomas P Heckmann, Claude Von Stroke, Ramon Tapia, Alexi Delano, Lars Klein, Paco Osuna, Mateo Murphy, Stephan Bodzin, and many more. In 2012 he moved to London where he founded Silent Storm Records on which he works four hands with his partner in crimes Luke Di Lullo. In short time they managed to bring their brand inside the Techno scene and make it well known releasing music from artists such as Brendon Moeller, D. “It’s been over five years since my last installment in the Freakshow Disco mix series…perhaps too long….perhaps not. After recording the initial blend of tracks for this mix, I went back and re-edited most of the songs to make them more concise for the purposes of home listening. Once the arrangements were all sitting tight, I went back yet again and overdubbed live oscillators, synthesizers, theremin, percussion, dub delays, vocal samples and other assorted noises to send the whole thing further into a dark psychedelic bubble. Finally after all the music had been constructed, I ran the entire mix through a series of vintage and analogue tape machines to add extra spongey warmth and cram the disparate sounds into the same environment…… That about ends my nerdish musical rant/description. The only other thing I would say is that I tried to put this mix together in such a way that it listens like an album, as opposed to just a bunch of tunes thrown together in a club. Hertz (SWE) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 64 Pt. 2 Bio: Originator of the Hertz-project is the famous Swedish producer Pierre J. In 2001 he laid the foundation of what would become a tale of success. Several hits have been released on major key labels and the Hertz-imprint has gained respect from the techno scene’s elite DJ¹s. Over the years Pierre has been involved in several collaborations with numerous well-known artists to keep the project fresh and current. What started out as one of those experiments slowly transformed into something that would last even longer. In 2007 Pierre invited the Swedish producer Petter B into the studio and the result was not only a close friendship but also formed a solid production team. Petter has a history of performing at clubs since 1996 and has released records on various labels, both solo and together with other well-known Swedish techno artists. Pierre and Petter saw the potential of combining their experience into something bigger than they could achieve solo. After working together on numerous releases, their ideas triggered the evolution of Hertz from being a solo-project into becoming a duo where they have different roles to play. Although they are creating all the magic together in the studio, Petter B will be the one to perform the Live and DJ-sets to the audience. This is the start of the new era of Hertz, including for both Pierre and Petter. Gayle San (SIN) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 48 Pt. 2 Bio: Gayle's first steps into the London clubs were via DJing at record company parties, various one-off guest spots and fashion shows. These slots soon led to Gayle being made resident at 'Reach for the Sky' at London's Limelight club, where she played alongside global DJs which Gayle describes as "the steepest learning curve possible". Having honed her DJing skills and broadened her understanding of music, Gayle began to experiment with the harder side of dance music, particularly the lesser known techno sounds coming into Britain from Europe and the US of that time. Her chance to pioneer this music in England came when Gayle became resident at Universe's legendary Final Frontier club, at Club U.K. in south London, which then moved on to become Universe Voyager at their new club, the Complex in north London,and she was also resident at all the Tribal Gatherings Festivlas. Final frontier was widely regarded as one of the best club nights in the world, it was not long before Gayle had amassed a following of techno pilgrims who would make journeys from as far as Edinburgh to hear her play. Gayle's reputation of her 3 decks mixing skills and dj sets spread like wildfire over the techno centres of Europe, most notably a residency once a month at the legendary Omen club in Frankfurt, the socalled 'Mecca of techno' that opened doors.Other European and American dates have included some of the most underground clubs in the world,from playing at high profile parties for Prince,Chaka Khan and Kylie minogue to name a few, to playing clubs like Bionic in Detroit, Pure Pleasure parties in Chicago, Soma in Montreal, Twilo in New York, Zouk Club in Singapore, Florida 135 in Spain, Fuse Club in Belgium,M47 in Hungary and many more all over Europe ,South America and the U.S.A. In 2000 she was voted number 6. of the most popular international DJs in Germany. Remaining in the top ten list has been a regularity ever since. In regards to the massive competition of the worlds DJs,and to be the only female dj in the top ten, it was an honour of her hard work in the last years. DJing has naturally led to various studio work and starting her own label Equator. Gayle has developed a sound that takes the intelligent beats of the underground, funky/hard/groove techno sound mixed with her very own style.Gayle loves producing on her own but also enjoys collaborations with other producers to absorb outside creativity.
