With his repertoire of musical styles and skillfully-crafted lyrics, his songs have been covered by diverse artists such as Jerry Garcia, Chet Atkins, Judy Collins, The Barenaked Ladies, Jimmy Buffett and K.D Lang. His pioneering guitar playing, both acoustic and electric, has placed him in the company of the world's top instrumentalists. Bruce remains deeply respected for his activism on issues spanning native rights to land mines, the environment to third world debt, and he has worked for organizations such as Oxfam, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders and Friends of the Earth. In this episode, I go deep with Bruce as we chat about his early beginnings, his time at Berklee College of Music in Boston, the inspiration behind some of his most memorable songs (Wondering Where the Lions Are, If I had a Rocket Launcher, The Mines of Mozambique), and we chat about his memoir Rumours of Glory. Whilst navigating his entire career, we explore his in-studio relationships with producers Colin Linden, Eugene Martynec, Jon Goldsmith and T-Bone Burnett. After chatting about Bruce's wonderful last album, O SUN O MOON, which also features a co-written song with Susan Aglukark about the growing threat of global warming (To Keep the World We Know), our conversation wraps up with Bruce saying that "if God shows up I hope I will recognize him." In Episode 1619, Sean Woodley is joined by Richard Stayman (Locked On NBA Big Board) to chat about the state of the 2024 NBA Draft class, the Toronto Raptors' muddled pick situation and some potential players who could be snug fits in Toronto with the Indiana Pacers pick and/or the Detroit Pistons pick at the top of the second round. Off the top, Sean and Richard discuss whether not this draft class is as light on talent as it's been suggested in the lead-up to the Draft, why Alex Sarr is the only higher end prospect he truly believes in having substantial upside, and the notion that the best players in this draft will probably come from outside the Top-10. Next, Sean and Richard tap into the biggest debate of our time: To Keep, or Convey the Raptors' Top-6 protected pick. Of course it's entirely out of the Raptors' control, but should Raptors fans be rooting for the team to hang onto this year's pick at 6, or convey it now and make their pick in 2025 wherever it may fall? Lastly, they run through some potential fits with the Raptors in the late teens or at 31 with their other two picks in this draft, including Tristan da Silva, Isaiah Collier, Kyshawn George, Ryan Dunn, Tyon Grant-Foster, Ulrich Chomche and more! In 2024, more people than ever in history will be going to the polls to vote in elections in more than 80 countries, including the US and the UK. As pillars of democratic societies, universities and colleges are integral to the exercise of choosing our public representatives. In today's episode we speak to two political scientists about voting habits, including among Generation Z, and how universities can encourage their students to engage in the democratic process. Elizabeth Matto is director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics, a research professor and teacher-scholar-practitioner of democratic education and director of the Center for Youth Political Participation at Rutgers University. She talks to us about what civic engagement is, how campuses can support their students to vote and engage as citizens, and universities' mission to prepare young people to be part of a democratic society. She also gives tips for facilitating political discussion in the classroom and creating an environment that allows students to be brave, respectful and open with their views. Her new book, To Keep the Republic: Thinking, Talking, and Acting Like a Democratic Citizen (Rutgers University Press, 2024) is published in April. Michael Bruter is a professor of political science and European politics in the department of government at the London School of Economics and Political Science and director of the Electoral Psychology Observatory. Michael has published seven books, including his latest book with Sarah Harrison, Inside the Mind of a Voter (Princeton University Press, 2020), and multiple articles in the fields of elections, political behaviour, political psychology, identities, public opinion, extreme right politics and social science research methods. He told us what their research has shown about first-time voters, including debunking misconceptions such as that young people don't care about elections, and why voting is like bungee jumping.

During this podcast, host Tawana Lowery shares three important strategies that will help us overcome disappointment (regardless of the circumstances) AND … Keep our Joy!! And as the new year approaches, let these strategies arm you with a game plan to transcend the disappointment traps that might arise. SCRIPT: How to Overcome Disappointment and Keep Your Joy By Tawana Lowery (excerpts taken from her upcoming book) 1. The Holiday Seasons is typically a time for celebrating with friends and loved ones. 2. But it can also present the greatest opportunity to experience the pain of Disappointment… · Though we might not want to readily admit it… · Disappointment is big part of life… · Disappointment hurts and stings… · Especially when it involves relationships. · But most of all… disappointment steals our joy. 3. During this Podcast, I want to review 3 Strategies that will help us Overcome Disappointment (regardless of the circumstances) AND … Keep our Joy!! 4. And as the new year approaches, I believe these strategies will arm you with a game plan to Transcend the Disappointment Traps that might arise. 5. Like you… I've had numerous disappointing experiences. · But one that stands out happened when I was only 8 years old. · And it happened during the holiday season. 6. In those days we still called it a Christmas Party. 7. Second only to the last day of school, it was the most anticipated day of the entire year. 8. Each hallway and classroom was covered with beautiful decorations. 9. And the tantalizing aroma of Christmas Cookies hung like a thick fog, consuming every corner of every room. 10. Weeks of anticipation followed by hours of celebration concluded with the most exciting part of the day. · The Student Gift Exchange! 11. The ritual consisted of the teacher passing out each gift (in a very orderly fashion of course). 12. After what seemed a lifetime, she found the present with my name on it. 13. As she approached my desk, my exuberance quickly devolved into disappointment! 14. Because my sweet teacher wasn't holding a beautifully wrapped gift with a shiny bow…. It was nothing of the sort! · Instead, she was carrying what appeared to be a ball of aluminum foil…. 15. With an awkward wince of embarrassment, she placed the horrifying blob on my desk. 16. Well…. my initial reaction was total confusion. Surely my name was not on THAT. 17. It wasn't even a present…. Seriously… who in their right mind would give a ball of crumpled aluminum foil as a Christmas gift? 18. Fighting back the crocodile tears, I quickly snatched it off my desk and placed it in my lap… trying to remain expressionless. 19. As I clutched it tightly, in an effort to hide the evidence, I could feel that something was wrapped inside. 20. I thought… “Should I open it now or wait until I get home?” 21. The thoughts were racing back and forth. 22. But soon my 8 year old curiosity took control. 23. With eyes straight ahead and emotions at bay, I slowly pushed back the foil with my fingertips. · That's when embarrassment gave way to complete bewilderment. 24. Inside the crumpled ball of foil was a small Plastic Donkey. · It was the kind of humble little grey burrow you might see in a Nativity Scene. · It had very sad eyes and a bowed head. 25. A donkey! A plastic donkey! What on earth can you do with a plastic donkey? · Just to add insult to injury, it wasn't even new. 26. As I gazed at this unimaginable nightmare… My mind quickly recalled my shopping trip from the previous week. 27. I thought about the time I invested selecting the perfect gift for my classmate. · It was wrapped with tender care, by yours truly. · Then finished to perfection with a lovely bow! · Yet despite my tireless efforts, this is what I get in return? 28. You know… that event happened more than 40 years ago, and yet the disappointment I experienced is branded in my memory. So… here's the point of the story? 29. Sometimes we give our very best to people and circumstances only to receive a Plastic Donkey in return. 30. Sometimes situations over which we have no control cause embarrassment and heartache, leaving us with a stomach full of disappointment and let-down. 31. But… What if we could overcome those deflated emotions and bounce back with a fervent determination to Keep our Joy? · That's what these 3 Principles will help you achieve. The first Principle is…. “Keep it in Perspective.” 1. A few days after the Christmas party, my mother learned the details behind the gift I had received. · My classmate, Teresa and her family were struggling. · Her father had lost his job, and her mom was fighting a serious illness. · Teresa's family had no money and no insurance for medical expenses. · In fact, the community was providing money for food and other basic needs. · No doubt, they were facing a very bleak holiday season. 2. My mom also explained how that little plastic donkey was part of their family Nativity Scene. · And it just so happened, the little sad burrow was Teresa's favorite character piece. · In actuality, Teresa gave me something very near and dear to her heart. · She gave the best she had to offer. You might even say her gift was sacrificial… sort of like the offering of the Widows Mite in the Bible. 3. Although my hurt from the disappointment was real, learning more about Teresa's situation shed new light on the entire event. · It helped me view it from a higher perspective. · As a result, my disappointed heart was transformed into a heart of compassion. · Keeping it in perspective gave me the emotional strength to keep my joy. The second Principle for Keeping our Joy is… “Keep Giving Your Best.” 1. When we returned to school after the holidays… I decided to give Teresa what she had given me. · She gave me her best. How could I do any less? 2. For the remainder of the school year, I poured into her life as much as possible. · I helped her with homework so she could make better grades. · We sat together at lunch so she wouldn't be alone. · Because we were the same size, I gave her some of my clothes and shoes. 3. Teresa and Tawana became best buds, and we both excelled because of it. 4. She discovered there was a great student on the inside with the ability to learn and grow. 5. I discovered leadership abilities that allowed me to inspire others to excel. 6. Staying true to your core values in the midst of the pain, is vital for overcoming disappointment. · That includes being intentional to give your best regardless of what other don't give you. 7. Think about it like this… · If you want to keep your joy, then be sure to engage in activities that set you up to achieve it. 8. After all, it's very difficult to give your best while experiencing sadness at the same time. Let's wrap this up with the third Principle for Keeping our Joy which is to… “Keep Looking for the Good.” 1. On one of the coldest days of the year, I got caught in a huge traffic jam on the way to have my car heater repaired. 2. The temperature was 35 degrees outside and only slightly warmer inside. · Not exactly the best day to be stuck in traffic with no heat. 3. But while I was sitting in my very frigid car, staring at a endless line of traffic, it brought to light another important truth about overcoming disappointment… · There's a big difference between being cold and being left out in the cold. · The first is simply an unpleasant circumstance of life. The second is a distressing place in life. 4. In the same way, there's a big difference in being disappointed with a temporary situation of life and being disappointed with life in general. · Most disappointments we encounter are nothing more than temporary unpleasant interludes between other normal events. · But problems arise when we allow the occasional let downs of life to create a fatalistic attitude towards life. 5. I've discovered the most effective way to avoid this pitfall is to maintain a posture of gratitude while you're in a disappointment. 6. Shivering in the car that morning, my choices were very simple. Either complain and grumble or be thankful and humble. · I chose to wrap my mind in a warm blanket of gratitude. · I decided to focus on the long list of things I was thankful for. 7. Of course, I didn't relish sitting in a cold car during a two hour traffic jam. · But, I couldn't change it. · And, honestly, the situation could have been much worse. 8. So I began to recite (out loud) all I was grateful for. · Things like warm clothes, warm socks and boots, · a full tank of gas, · a semi-hot cup of coffee, · good health, · money in the bank, · friends and family who loved me, · and so on and so on. 9. As I focused more and more on the good, my stress began to dissipate. · I became less focused on what was trying to steal my joy and more centered on what would revive it. 10. I believe when we form the habit of looking for the good in the “not so good” we actually Teach our Minds to be Joyful. Closing 1. I'm not suggesting we should never admit or feel Disappointment. 2. It's part of life because …. a. We live in a fallen world full of fallen people doing fallen things. 3. But I am suggesting that we use the Plastic Donkey's of life as a reminder… To Keep it in Perspective, To Keep Giving our Best and To Keep Looking for the Good. 4. When we do so… we Keep our hearts and minds positioned to KEEP our JOY (during the holidays and throughout the year). What the Oppenheimer movie gets right about the treat of nuclear war, the impact of period-proof gear at the Women's World Cup, Bruce Cockburn and Susan Aglukark on their new song, To Keep the World We Know, and more.
Proverbs 4:23 says 'Keep your heart with all diligence for out of it spring or flow the issues of life." Pastor Larry has, in the last few weeks, been sharing about the Word of God defining and changing this part of us – our heart – our soul -- our thoughts, feelings and choices. To KEEP our heart is to stay connected with what God says and is saying over us – to rightly divide the Word of Truth – to let the Word purify and wash us. This message will help us to understand how that happens and how it does not so we don't fall for the bait of the enemy!
EPISODE ON HARVEST EATING Let me come right out and say this; we are in very uncertain times in this country. Recently I heard the pathetic treasure secretary attempt to “calm the people down” and convince us the banks are safe. The illegitimate puppet leader said the same thing too, basically, everything is fine, go back to your devices, nothing to see here. However, the banks are vastly undercapitalized, FED reduced the reserve requirement in 2020 to zero %. The BRICS nations are trading without the dollar, OPEC just cut crude oil production by over 500,000 barrels per day for the rest of 2023, and the border is wide open. Suffice it to say, our republic is quickly falling apart. So on to the bundles…..the idea here is to get inexpensive and related items that can be made into simple meals that will satisfy and keep you from going to stores. These simple ideas and strategies are aimed at those of you who have not started storing food yet. Think about this, if you have a can of tuna, a jar of peanut butter, some bullion, and a jar of BBQ sauce what are you going to make? On the flip side if you had a can of roast beef, a box of potato flakes, some bullion, and a can of vegetables you could make a beef stew. The idea is to make sure these bundles or kits are built with related items that go easily together into simple meals. Pasta Bundle, Buy: assorted shapes of pasta small cans of tomato paste 28 ox cans of tomatoes, petite diced are my favorite but whole peeled are good too. Parmesan cheese-good stuff if you can afford it and have a freezer, or green can if not, better to have than not IMO Italian seasoning Rice and Beans Bundle, Buy: black beans, I buy at Costco rice, I prefer aromatic rice like Basmati or Jasmine but long-grain or brown rice is perfect too organic if possible, onion and garlic powder (keep frozen) full-fat coconut milk, which I buy from Walmart or Amazon (links below) Chipotles in Adobo Tuna Casserole Bundle, Buy: your favorite tuna egg noodles or other shapes like farfalle or even pinwheels cans of peas and carrots or bags of frozen cans of cream of mushroom Soup (I eat this stuff once per year, but in a pinch, I'm fine with it) bags of powdered milk (see below) containers of cheddar cheese powder (see below) Roast Beef Stew Bundle, BUY: cans of roast beef, which I buy from Costco cans of green beans cans of peas and carrots Better than bullion beef base or cubes you like 1 Potato starch Chicken n Dumplings Bundle, BUY: cans of chicken breast cans of green beans cans of peas and carrots or frozen Better than bullion chicken base or cubes you like all-purpose flour Morning Coffee Bundle-MOST IMPORTANT ITEM!!!!!!! your favorite whole bean coffee-you know what mine is! freeze-dried instant coffee, yes I keep this stuff too (see below) half & half or other creamers or 2 cases of Evaporated milk (unless you take coffee black) packets of sugar in the raw Fat Bundle (I prefer To Keep these Frozen if Possible) butter extra virgin olive oil coconut oil lard beef tallow Duck fat? These bundles can be customized with dried spices, dairy, seasonings, fresh vegetables, etc. These are examples to get you thinking of buying bundles so all items are in-stock and ready to go should the day come you need them. Storage: I think these bundles or kits could be ticked into a flat plastic container and slipped un a bed, or stacked together on top of shelves or just about anywhere. I also suggest placing a simple label on the front so they are easily identified. And lastly, these should be rotated thru every so often to ensure they stay fresh. Damon and Damo are joined by active-duty Command Master Chief and host of ‘The Rising Son' podcast, Dean Howell. The guys kick it off with a conversation about Dean's upbringing. From a Harvard University “recruit” to a Navy Recruiting Office, Damo asks Dean what made him “Choose Navy.” This turned out to be an excellent choice as Dean made Master Chief in 15 years. He also spent the greater part of his military career in Japan, where he met his wife and raised his three daughters. Dean is an advocate for Service members maximizing on their talents while still serving our country. The guys discuss alcoholism in the Navy. With Dean being on the tail end of a “75 Hard” challenge, discipline and challenging yourself to fight temptations is a reoccurring theme. How the hell does someone make Master Chief in 15 Years? What the heck does it mean to be in the “right place at the right time”? Why does Damo hate that expression so much? The guys discuss where the Command Master Chief falls in the command's organization structure. You may be surprised by this. Is the Senior Enlisted Advisor community a separate entity than the CPO Mess? How's the state of the CPO Mess right now? What can we do to fix some of the negative thoughts about the CPO Mess? Damon wants to know how Dean approaches his Chief's Mess on Day 1. Dean discusses one of the craziest things that he's seen as a Command Master Chief. The life of a podcaster is explored. The guys talk the power of “thinking big” and taking risks. Dean dishes some detail on the book that he's currently working on, ‘H.O.L.D. F.A.S.T.' which he intends to release later this year. Is the Navy pay system “all jacked up”? How does a CMDCM feel about “CMDCM pay”? Do Command Master Chiefs make enough money? There is so much more in this episode. The Two Trees Genesis 2:15-17 Main Point of the Sermon: Jesus is the way back to life for every sinner who chose death. Introduction What is good? What is evil? How is it that there are some people in the world who will consider one action evil, while others call it good? Never has there been more confusion regarding what is good and what is evil. Instead of beauty being in the eye of the beholder, it seems that it is now “good and evil is in the eye of the beholder.” Right now in our culture, there is a belief that has taken root that the ultimate good for a human is to live authentically. Authentic living, it is said, cannot be defined by anyone else. It must come from yourself. In other words, you are the ultimate definition of reality for yourself and therefore decide what is good for you. Any push back from another or unwillingness to accept one's self espoused identity and truth, therefore, is the ultimate evil in our culture. Where does God fit into all of this? Well, he doesn't. Because by claiming total self-determination one actually takes the place of God. The self is god. The world is championing this idea in every sphere of society. It's making it's mark in the young and old, in men and women, and even in the church. And surprisingly, when you come to the story of God, which he has given in the pages of Scripture, you find that this sort of idea is nothing new but is in fact the ancient idea behind every sin ever committed on the face of the earth. If we're going to understand the mess we all face in our world, we have to understand trees… two specific trees, planted in the very beginning in the middle of the garden of Eden, the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The trees are going to show us much about the fundamental makings of a relationship with God, which hinges on a daily choice, a choice of life and death. And we're going to finish seeking to answer the question, what hope is there for a sinner who chose death? Context So far in the story, we've seen that God created the cosmos out of nothing just by speaking. Then God created mankind in his image, male and female, to put his glory on display as they multiplied and expanded the garden of Eden on the face of the earth. But today, we take a small step back in the narrative, even before the woman was created, to focus in on the two trees introduced and God's first command to the man. So, let's look together at verse 15. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. The Personal Covenant-Making God Notice here the use of God's personal name, Yahweh, signified by the word LORD in all caps. Chapter 1 of Genesis introduced God as Elohim, but chapter 2, beginning in verse 5 uses not just Elohim, but Yahweh Elohim, which I think brings an intimacy to the story. In other words, this is not just some unknown, unseen God, but the personal God, who had revealed himself by name to Israel. This is the one who is intricately involved in his creation and in his relationship with man. He is near, forming, breathing life, planting, watering, and now having conversation with the first man. Our God is personal and near, not distant and uninvolved. To “Keep” the Garden Temple Secondly, look again in verse 15 at the reason God placed the man in the garden – to work and keep it. Now, Ross already did an excellent job unpacking the topic of work and showing that it is very much part of our daily worship to God. But I want to highlight briefly this second task, to “keep” the garden. Most of my life I overlooked the importance of that word, thinking it was just another aspect of working the garden. But I believe God had something more in mind here. This Hebrew word for keep can also be translated “watch over” or “guard”, which several English translations do. Cultivating the garden, in other words, was not the only task of the gardener. He also was to carefully guard the garden from being tainted. He was to be a watchman over God's garden temple as it expanded over the whole earth. Why is that so important? Man's task to work and keep the garden was much bigger than pulling weeds. Working and keeping the garden was as much spiritual as it was physical. Working and keeping is about faithfulness to the God who makes covenant with mankind. It's about faithful worship, and not just for him but for his future wife and children. What Adam didn't know at that point was that there was a Serpent who had rebelled against God and that God was tasking him to guard himself and the garden from this evil. This point is crucial for us if we are going to grasp the purpose of God's singular boundary in the garden – the tree of knowledge of good and evil. In fact, this point is crucial if we are going to grasp the reality that everything we do in this life, whether eating or drinking, working or playing, is a matter of worship. All of life is lived before the face of God and in relationship to him. The Fundamentals of Relationship with God I want us to look now at verse 16, where we'll see the fundamentals of a relationship with God? And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” There is a lot here and we will break it down carefully. Blessing and Joy First, this is a relationship of blessing and joy. Before God gives a stipulation, God reminds us of the blessing he gave them at first: “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over all creatures… (1:28)” The whole earth is there's! Now here, in saying that they are free to eat from any tree in the garden, he's reminding them of just how rich they are by being in relationship with him – “you are free to eat of ANY/EVERY tree in the garden is an invitation to freely enjoy all the benefits of being in relationship with God. This is so important because in our sinful nature we are very quick to focus on the one stipulation rather than the blessing and joy being offered. But when you take your eyes off the restriction for one moment, you find in these words a God who welcomes you to abundant life and joy in him. How many of you men when you came to the altar on the wedding day thought to yourself as you stared into the eyes of your bride, Geez, this woman sure is going to restrict my life? No! As you stared into her eyes, yes, you recognized that you are in that moment giving up the chance of being with anyone else, but you jump in wholeheartedly because you are overcome by joy and gratitude that you get her! The vow to singular devotion to her seems like no restriction at all because you feel that with her you are gaining the world, that you are the richest man alive! Such is our relationship with God. If only the world understood that God is not a kill-joy out to restrict you and slap your hand for having fun, but he is a generous God who says look, “the world is mine and I give it all to you.. This phrase “You may surely eat of every tree” is not just about fruit, friends. When God says “You are free to eat”, he is saying indulge yourself in the gift of life! Taste and see! He is saying, go play, enjoy yourself. Enjoy swimming in the ocean. Enjoy intimacy with your spouse. Enjoy good food. Enjoy laughing and building and running and singing. He's inviting you to live abundantly! And it all points to him, to his generosity, to his goodness. He could not be any more generous, church. Mankind's relationship with God is built first on a blessing, on freedom and joy, on life. Do you see God this way? As a generous giver, not a taker? Pause. The Tree of Life The tree of life is further proof of that. Verse 9 tells us that there was another tree in the Middle of the garden called the tree of life. God's invitation to eat freely of any tree was an invitation to this tree also. To be in a covenant relationship with God was to have access to a tree which allowed you to live eternally. This tree is a picture of the life and joy that all have access to in relationship with their God. It's symbolic for God's life-giving, joy-giving presence. Where God is, there is life – it flows from him, which is the picture we see in Revelation when God will restore all things and bring heaven and earth together again. The tree of life is there on each side of the river, which flows from the throne of God. The tree is proof of God's good intentions for you! To have God is to have life. There is another fundamental reality of relationship with God that comes from the first law God gives to man in verse 17. Establishing Lordship 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” There's something important to learn here about covenants in the Bible. As the story of the Bible progresses, we learn that laws are essential parts of covenants. A covenant is essentially a loving relationship with firm boundaries that have the goal of intimacy. You could think of a marriage covenant, for example. When we make vows to another, we vow our lives, our love, and all our possessions to the other. But there is also a stipulation. We vow to be faithful to the other “until death do us part”. We are saying I will taste the fruit of your garden alone and promise to go nowhere else. You see, the boundary provides intimacy. God is aiming for nothing less here. Just as God vowed himself and all his riches to mankind as we do in marriage, he also set up a boundary in the relationship. Covenant with God demands loyal and exclusive devotion. Though we see marital similarities, here is where we must break from the marriage analogy. God's covenant with man is not like that of a man with a woman, who are on equal playing field. No, we must remember again at this point to whom we are covenanting with. He is God. He writes the rules of space and time. He speaks and all things obey his authority. He formed us from the dust of the earth. He is the potter; we are the clay. And this God gave a command to the man: “There is one tree of which you may not eat.” In giving the command, God is establishing his Lordship in the relationship. In other words, the forbidding of a particular realm, the knowledge of good and evil, is God establishing his authority in the relationship to define reality and what is good and evil. The one who created mankind and began a relationship with mankind must be obeyed by his creatures. Loyal devotion to God in this covenant meant full obedience. So, a second fundamental tenet of relationship with God is his Lordship and our submission and obedience. But lest we quickly fall back into the notion that this is some restrictive power-grabbing God, let me draw attention to how even this tree and the command again puts God's goodness on display. Benefits of the Command First, God's creation of this tree provided an opportunity for humans to worship daily by displaying trust and faithfulness to God. Many have asked the question, why did God place this tree in the garden? It seems cruel. But it's not. It's actually beautiful. I believe we can only conclude that by placing the tree in the garden and allowing the potential for unfaithfulness to him, God was showing us what kind of relationship he was interested in having with humanity. Namely, one that was built on free trust. Friends, I need you to get this. God was more concerned that our relationship with him was built on an ever-increasing trust in his goodness and character than he was in providing a sheltered or robotic environment where there was no other option. Again, the tree provides an opportunity for humans to daily display their devotion to God. The great Reformer Martin Luther said that Adam standing daily before the tree, “[had the opportunity] to yield to God the obedience he owed, give recognition to the Word and will of God, give thanks to God, and call upon God for aid against temptation.”[2] What he's saying is right. God didn't create a tree to tempt Adam to sin. And the tree is not a lesson on God's desire to keep certain information from us. No, the tree informs us that our God wants a real relationship with us built on real choice. Every day that Adam and Eve saw the tree or came near the tree, which was in the middle of the garden, they were confronted with the choice, do I believe that God is good, do I believe that he is right, do I believe that he is Lord and God? Or do I believe that God is stingy, that he is withholding, that I should determine what is good and evil? You see, this tree is not just about getting understanding of what good and evil is. No, to choose to eat from the knowledge of good and evil is to choose to define for oneself what is good and evil. It is to become judge, to become Lord, to become God, the definer of reality and truth. I said earlier that the chief virtue of our culture, to be whoever you fashion yourself to be without any restraint, is rooted in this story. And here's what I mean, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil represents the choice every human has to either let God be God, defining what is good and evil, or to take the role of God yourself by defining good and evil. To eat from the tree is to pursue independence from God. And this, friends, is exactly what sin is. In fact, every time we sin, we figuratively eat from this tree by taking the task of defining good and evil for ourselves rather than depending on God to define good and evil. So, we've seen why the tree is there, but now let's focus on what happens if they eat from the tree. For God said to Adam in verse 17: for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Sin boasts freedom from any restraint, but in fact, it is not freedom, but slavery and a path of death. Why is sin a path of death? Because sin breaks the covenant relationship with God, and he is the source of life, depicted in the access to the tree of life, sin therefore destroys life. A choice to be independent from God is nothing more than a choice to die. A protection from death A second benefit of this command from God is a loving warning and protection from death. This command is not a harsh restriction or a power grab, but a loving warning to mankind. God wants us to know and understand that apart from him, there is no life. Sin is not to gain, but only to lose. It is choosing death. Sin leads to a spiritual death as one is separated from God, which is inevitably followed by a physical death. God's restriction is really an invitation to freedom. Because to throw off God and his Lordship is not to become free and more happy, but to become a slave to sin, as we'll see next week, a slave to the Serpent and his kingdom of darkness and to die as a result. God is not a stingy God. Though he does not always disclose everything to us like we may want him to, it is for good purpose. So, if he says no, you can't have that, it is because he knows best. He loves us. And as we wait on him patiently with trust, God strengthens us and matures us and grows our wisdom. Joy never comes from taking matters into our own hands, but in seeking understanding from the place of faith, from a place of rest in God. Application I believe some of you today are toying with sin, and flirting with the idea that you really could be happier choosing your own path. Some of you are believing the lie that God is withholding from you. Believe me. He is not a withholding God. You will understand in time. Some of you need to stop entertaining the idea that you will be better off if you just take the easier road and do what you want. Instead, I invite you to look the temptation in the face and simply say, “God, even though I don't fully understand, I believe you are good and that you know best for me. I trust you.” And friends, every time we do that, our God is glorified. I imagine that he lights up like you might light up when your husband brings you flowers or writes you a special note that communicates his singular devotion and love to you. Every time you resist sin, you are saying that you believe that God is better and more worthy of your time than anything else my heart be drawn after. So, God has set up boundaries for mankind in his Law. He has told mankind certain things that please him and certain things that he hates. With every word, every command, a test is before us, a choice is before every human every hour. Will we trust him and take him at his word and let him be God and receive life or will we reject his word and take our own path and receive death? As we'll learn next week, Adam and Eve were deceived like all of us by Satan and made the tragic choice to try to claim independence from God in eating the fruit. And from that day, every human has followed suit and thus are under condemnation and will die in sin and suffer eternally in hell apart from God. Here's how Paul frames it in Romans 5: 12 When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam's sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned[3]. Do you see that. Death spread to everyone? Why? Because everyone sinned. We've all chosen to eat from this tree. We've all chosen independence from God at one point or other and therefore, we are under a just sentence of death apart from God. By claiming independence from God, all of us have a broken relationship with God, the source of life. This is the primary issue with humanity. Not that people aren't authentically living out their self-proclaimed identity, but because we have rejected our God and broken ourselves off from the source of life. But listen to the rest of Romans 5: 6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us [or instead of us] sinners… God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Why is that such good news? Because God made a way for those sentenced to death to live! His death on a tree symbolizes that he had come to overcome the harm our first parents did. But more than that, he made a way for us to be brought back into relationship with God. Jesus was the only human who ever lived in complete dependence on God, and through faith in him, we are promised that his record becomes our record and his relationship with his Father, which was never broken by sin, becomes our relationship with the Father. Conclusion: The main thing I want you to take away from this sermon is this: Jesus is the way back to life for every sinner who chose death. The choice is yours today. Which tree will you eat from? Will you choose to trust God in all of his goodness and believe in Jesus, who is your life, or will you choose to be independent of God and die in your sin. Which tree have you been eating from? Have you taken things into your own hands, deciding what is good and evil? If so, give it back to the rightful owner. The choice is ours today. Will you choose life or death? The Serpent is doing everything he can to make sure we choose death, but God has opened the door wide for you to have life and life eternal in Jesus. Come to him now. Today is the day of salvation. Let's pray now for God's help to stand and keep choosing life. [1] The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (Nu 1:53). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles. [2] Mathews, K. A. (1996). Buck rocks it solo while Clay takes the day off to do dad stuff. SCOTUS reaffirms right "To Keep and Bear Arms", voting 6-3 to strike down New York's unconstitutional concealed-carry law. Buck says, "As an adult, I have not been able to enjoy 2nd Amendment rights in my home state... It's obscene." Unelected Governor Hochul knows nothing about the 2nd Amendment. Buck reads from Justice Thomas' brilliantly written opinion on the NY gun law. Buck takes a call to wrap up the hour. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What's More Evil Than Covid? Something is happening around the world in an unprecedented way. It is one thing to administer treatment and cause harm. It is another thing when the cure is worse than the disease. But now they are using Covid to justify an evil agenda Hitler would be proud to sponsor. Are you OK with throwing people into Covid concentration camps? Are you OK with chipping people or putting nano-robots in their bodies so they can be tracked and controlled? Are you OK with letting people die in the parking lot of the hospital or on the table waiting for a transplant? Are you OK with starving people to death? Do you think your neighbor should lose everything just because he won't take a job that doesn't even work? No matter how we feel about masks, shutdowns, and supposed vaccines, we should all be able to agree that these are things that Jesus would never do. But they are exactly what Hitler and Stalin did. Help Us Save Our Children I am passionate about protecting our children. Unfortunately, a new threat has gone unnoticed, and parents need to listen closely. What is this threat? The needless jabbing of our children. Even the Wall Street Journal admits that the evidence behind vaccinating our children is flimsy at best. For example, did you know that according to the CDC, only 335 children have died from Covid in 17 months?[1] To put that in perspective, around 16.6 kids per month (200 kids per year) die from the flu versus 19.7 for Covid.[2] Indeed, there are not enough statistical differences to warrant virtually any popular responses to Covid-19, yet alone, a mandatory experimental jab filled with genetic material. What is also astonishing is that none of the CDC's 21,000 employees have ever investigated any of these deaths. Yet, the most disturbing point is that the “FDA's own Pfizer approval document suggests myocarditis from the shot might be a bigger threat than COVID.”[3] Still, they haven't stopped using fear to keep pushing the false narrative. When the New York Times issued a correction after egregiously exaggerating coronavirus child hospitalizations, America had already succumbed to fear.[4] Just how far did they overestimate the number of child Covid hospitalizations: from 63,000 to 900,000. Join the Supernatural Junkies as we deflate the fear and keep hope alive for the sake of our children. After reviewing some of the disturbing ingredients of the Certificate Of Vaccination ID jabs, we are left with more questions than answers. But what does the Bible say about these happenings and where does this all lead? Join us on this episode of the Supernatural Junkies as we summarize over a year's worth of research, and unpack what we can do in these trying times. If the Covid virus was man made, then we are dealing with a massive crime against humanity. Indeed, a jab that represents a Certificate Of Vaccination ID maybe the pinnacle of the crime. Yet, did the Bible tell us that a “cause” would come into the world whose effect would be to gain access to our bodies? Did the Bible tell us that if we did not give them access, then we would not be able to “buy or sell? Hopefully, you already know the answer to these questions. Around the world, societies have been brought to their knees with lockdowns and vaccine passports. People are being forced to take a dangerous jab that they don't need and doesn't even work. Yet, every day we are hearing and seeing more of the disturbing ingredients and side effects of the supposed vaccines. Unfortunately, these discoveries have left us with more questions than answers. At this point, Tribulation need zero introduction since they have been a powerhouse of both death metal and gothic metal over the course of four full lengths. And, with Where the Gloom Becomes Sound the band fully cement their gothic meets death metal stance. It's January but already we're feeling vibes of "best of 2021" with this album since it truly is their best yet and fully fleshed out album to date. And, that's saying a lot since any fan of the band would already say they've climbed that hill. Such is the power of Tribulation. Just ahead of the album's release, guitarist Adam Zaars took the time to chat with Buke about Where the Gloom Becomes Sound and how it was to craft an album in the midst of a pandemic, Jonathan Hultén's exit and Joseph Tholl's entry and how he fits in, how genre labels don't always do justice, influences for donning the makeup, a brief history of the band and a timeline discussion, Adam's "nerding out" with heavy metal in his younger days and changes in listening habits over the years, Adam's favorite track off the new album and why. All that and discussions on their collective kids, gaming, Tribulation's live presence and what 2021 may hold for the band.Where the Gloom Becomes Sound will be available January 29 on Metal Blade Records and Century Media Records. To Keep up with all things Tribulation, visit their official website, Facebook page, and Instagram page.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
In 1996 Emory University's Michael A. Bellesiles, published an article in the Journal of American History: "The Origins of Gun Culture in the United States, 1760-1865." His provocative argument was that there were nowhere near as many guns in early America as people had previously assumed and that American gun culture was born in the lead up to the Civil War. To prove his thesis, Bellesiles pointed to low counts of guns in probate records, gun censuses, militia muster records, and homicide accounts. While his article caused some debate, it received wide praise and eventfully served as the basis for Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture (2000) publish with Knopf.Upon publication Arming America received rave reviews from some of the academy's most respected figures and the only early negative reviews were from conservative or libertarian voices. Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture would go on to win the Bancroft Prize, the highest honor for historians of American history. But criticism continued to mount, and more and more scholars began to investigate the claims being made by Bellesiles and the numbers he offered. As criticism increased and charges of scholarly misconduct were made, Emory University conducted an internal inquiry into Bellesiles's integrity, appointing an independent investigative committee composed of three leading academic historians from outside Emory. The investigation agreed with his critics that Arming America had serious problems within its thesis, and called into question both its quality and veracity. In 2002, the trustees of Columbia University rescinded Arming America's Bancroft Prize. Alfred A. Knopf did not renew Bellesiles' contract, and the National Endowment for the Humanities withdrew its name from a fellowship that the Newberry Library had granted Bellesiles. Bellesiles issued a statement on October 25, 2002, announcing the resignation of his professorship at Emory by year's end. In 2003, Bellesiles released the second edition of Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture with Soft Skull Press and a response booklet to his critics, Weighed in an Even Balance. James Lindgren recounted much of the Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture saga and the criticisms against it in his article "Fall From Grace."-Joyce Lee Malcolm is the Patrick Henry Professor of Constitutional Law and the Second Amendment Joyce Lee Malcolm is a historian and constitutional scholar active in the area of constitutional history, focusing on the development of individual rights in Great Britain and America. She is the author of eight books, most recently The Tragedy of Benedict Arnold: An American Life. Professor Malcolm has written many books and articles on gun control, the Second Amendment, and individual rights. Her work, To Keep and Bear Arms: The Origins of an Anglo-American Right, was cited several times in the recent U.S. Supreme Court opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller. She was also one of the first critics of Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture.

Matt Medeiros continues Season 8 with the roundtable format asking the question is there change in the WordPress ecosystem? John Turner and Phil Derksen are the special guests that share what significant changes they have made in their careers and what they see in the WordPress ecosystem. Listen to this episode: Matt Report - A WordPress podcast for digital business owners Why exiting solopreneurship is the right move Play Episode Pause Episode Mute/Unmute Episode Rewind 10 Seconds 1x Fast Forward 30 seconds 00:00 / 00:47:53 Subscribe Share RSS Feed Share Link Embed Download file | Play in new window | Duration: 00:47:53 John Turner joined Awesome Motive through their customer accelerator portal to help his company grow. Syed Balkhi, Awesome Motive's owner, suggested that John join the company as a partner since his product and strategy aligned with Awesome Motive. (3:10) Phil Derksen recently joined Sandhills Development LLC after running a one-man shop company called WP Simple Pay, which is a stripe payment and subscription program. Sandhills Development, LLC has a whole suite of products that was founded by Pippin Williamson. (4:20) What you will learn in this Episode: Startups in the WordPress economy were easy to start as a fully bootstrapped business. It can be a roller coaster ride of going solo and joining a company, then trying to go solo again. (6:48) John – Worked for 6 or 7 years and did not feel like he was continually growing. When the opportunity became available with Syed and Awesome Motive John decided to give it a try and take the growth to the next level. It was difficult where the uncertainty and change is concerned, but he is excited to be a part of the company. (7:48) Phil – Phil had many happy customers with his product and support. Although he had a level of comfort with his company, he did not feel like he could release the features that customers were requesting. For example, EDD could offer many things that his product couldn't do. Phil had one product to focus on, but it was distracting to jump from being a developer, then marketing and support. It is exciting to work with a team and see the growth of the products. (11:11) Product Growth – Marketing or the Product Alone? Phil – Product features and planning for the future is critical. Then the focus needs to change to marketing to get the word out to the customers. (11:59) John– Marketing is the most important focus and the lesson to learn. You can have an awesome product, but you need to have the time and focus on marketing. (12:23) Matt – For people to scale their business they need to market their product successfully and make more money. It takes a lot of time and money to do marketing correctly. (13:41) Marketing John – There is no magic bullet when it comes to marketing. When you find out what is working you need to concentrate on it. When your business is small, you don't have a lot of money to spend on marketing. You need to focus on one or two channels (like Facebook and Content Marketing) and focus on what is working for you. It could take awhile. (15:19) Phil – Phil has recently spent money and time on content marketing. Finding what works and knowing that changes over time are important. It is tough to get noticed with new plugins or themes on WordPress.org. Sandhills Development has a marketing team that reaches out and promotes products. (17:19) Matt – Some businesses try a blanket approach with marketing and cover too much. The person in the WordPress Community that is doing marketing well seems to be Brad Touesnard from Delicious Brains. His company does a great job with their brand and content marketing. Pagely is another company that does a great job with their quality and material. Phil: Chris Badgett at LifterLMS does a great job with content marketing and his podcast concentrating around learning systems. John: LifterLMS has very focused content with their brand and audience. The material has intent. Content Marketing Focus: Matt – Content Marketing is very expensive and very hard to do as a business owner. If you are preparing webinars and podcasts, it takes a lot of time when launching a podcast. It can be hard to produce quality content consistently. (19:54) John – To test the market in the WordPress space getting on WordPress.org is the best place to start and get some eyes on your product. It is essential to focus on the product name and reviews. You need to start somewhere and then figure out how to rank it. (21:03) Phil – Some people go to the content route first without a free version of their product. Phil likes the podcast/YouTube style. Joe Howard has started the WPMRR Podcast and focuses on monthly revenue. When you find something that is working, you can double down on it. While you are adjusting your approach, you should be concentrating on your email list. (22:09) John – Many niches are very competitive in the WordPress space. You need to build up the business and take baby steps slowly. It is not easy. (22:53) Matt – There are two sides to this. You can try to rank in WordPress. org. But as competition starts to grow, some new business owners find they start too late with the ideas for marketing. One great idea is to leverage customer stories with a podcast and repurpose the content. (24:21) Forecasting the Future of WordPress: Matt – WordPress is becoming more competitive, and pricing in the marketing is still a challenge. How is pricing changing in the WordPress space? (26:07) John – Many themes and plugins have gone to automatic subscription. Many customers are renewing without a discount in subsequent years (especially with hosting or SaaS products) (26:46) Phil – Larger companies can adapt to charge more because they have a reputation and support behind the product. The customer can count on them with staying power. (28:04) Matt – Prices in the space are tiered for support for products. Customers seem to value the product and as an end user, they see the value. (28:50) John – Customers are buying the products and making money. There was a positive response from his customers with his joining a larger company. Phil – There were no complaints coming from customers when features were released and annual subscriptions were occurring. SaaS products seem to do this annually. Phil got a great response from his customers when he joined Sandhills Development. They were excited with the partnership and the solutions that can be offered. (30:32) Balancing User Requests and Feedback: John: He would produce a yearly survey to stay on pace with his customers including the feedback that he received over the year. Every feature that you include will be a support burden down the line. (33:16) Phil – Sent out a survey as well as tracking support requests that looked like new features. Phil collected responses all year and weighed those requests with what it would take to develop and support. Phil was very cautious about adding features while trying to not take any feature away. (33:59) Monetization with Gutenberg and WordPress 5.0 John – Waiting to see what happens after the release. There seems to be a lot of opinions about what will happen with the newest release. (35:47) Phil – Is expecting support to be overwhelmed after the release. Documents and videos will help people with the release. WP Simple Pay will not be that impacted. The page builder and themes could be impacted but uncertain by how much and in what way. (36:36) Matt – There are a lot of folks jumping into the opportunity around Gutenberg with an opportunity to sell to customers. The release seems to be a way to create a SaaS around WordPress.org. With Jetpack enabled you will be able to remind the customer about what is coming and create upsells. Matt Medeiros continues Season 8 with this interview discussing changes in the WordPress community. Liam Dempsey and Tara Claeys are running WordPress businesses, they are consultants and produce a Podcast together called Hallway Chats. He and Tara Claeys started the Podcast called Hallway Chats for the WordPress community and share how people use WordPress in their lives. Tara and Liam have known each other through the WordPress community and each had thought about having a podcast. This show came together out of a common interest in the WordPress community and giving back. Tara Claeys is a small business agency owner of DesignTLC. She is a co-host on the Hallway Chats podcast that explores the personal side of WordPress with each guest and investigates how WordPress has changed lives of so many people. This podcast was a first for Liam and Tara. Together they have a great interviewing style and make a strong team. Tara wanted a podcast that did not overlap with many others in the space that concentrate on the technical side of WordPress. What you will learn in this Episode: The longevity of a WordPress podcast can be a challenge. Hallway Chats does not have a set format and is very unique because each guest shares a personal story. The podcast is not used as a business tool and is not being used as a lead generator or as a revenue maker. Liam – the professional focus has been to have a podcast that is scalable and not be an overwhelming task for either host. It cannot compete with other daily work needed to run a WordPress agency. Matt – Discusses what the costs are for scheduling and producing a podcast. Episodes can run $2,000 – $4,000 a year. You can spend a couple hundred dollars a month and can look to sponsorship to help cover the show costs. A WordPress podcast is unique where a person needs to understand the product. Is Success Possible with a podcast? Tara – Success is related to your goal. Hallway Chats is a podcast that enables guests to tell their story. The ultimate goal is to have a conversation. When Tara attends WordCamps it is a great feeling to know that you have interviewed many of the people on the Hallway Chats podcast. Liam has become a good business support as well. Liam – There were about 50 shows in the first year of Hallway Chats. The show has been an avenue for people to share their stories from around the world. It is amazing to find out about people and what they are dealing with in their lives. The opportunity to work with Tara Claeys has been a great experience. Matt – Thinks the mix of having a co-host on a podcast with you is a strong business model that can work with compatible personalities. Matt has done seasons with a co-host and has handled his podcast alone. Change of WordPress with Gutenberg Matt – Sees things calming down a bit around the release of WordPress. He also has observed things tightening up in the WordPress community with the competition. He has noticed that people are partnering with companies and often taking on a job. There is a concern about the rush to get the latest release of WordPress out there. Tara – There have not been many discussions around Gutenberg and changes in the WordPress community on the Hallway Chat podcast. She does acknowledge there has been a challenge around the release of Gutenberg. There is nervous discussion around a community that has usually been supportive and excited about new releases. It almost appears that you need to choose a side around the release and have an opinion about it. Liam – Hallway Chats has actively avoided conversations around Gutenberg and WordPress. When the conversation has been touched on, most guests are excited about the changes coming with the release of Gutenberg. Some guests have shared concerns about the release of Gutenberg, leadership, and communication. Balancing and Monetizing work with a WordPress Agency Tara – small businesses coming to a small agency for work usually don't care about what you are using to build a website. They want a site that looks good and works well that is easy for them to maintain. She has not tried out any new Content Management Systems. Liam – does not do any affiliate marketing. He tries to use the best solution for his clients which has been offering WordPress websites. WordPress is so prevalent and can be delivered in many different ways for a client. However, many agencies are delivering websites without the same level of quality. Matt – it was easy to customize WordPress but the basic coding practices are changing with JavaScript and may need more advanced developer skills. Website agencies will be paying more attention to the customers and what they are attempting to do with their websites. You will really need to understand the customer's intention. Advice that has helped in your life or career? Liam – Be mindful and aware. It has been quite a journey. When you are saying and doing things, stop to ask Why am I doing this? Analyzing why is something that has helped personally and professionally. This has helped with defining success as not being just about profit or fame. Tara – Striving to be a mindful person has been a goal. Recognizing your personality and where you are in life also impacts your approach. Aim higher and do more. This helps as an entrepreneur. Matt Medeiros continues Season 8 with the third roundtable episode talking to Naomi Bush, Brad Williams, and Rebecca Gill. Matt discusses a recent podcast with Matt Mullenweg and Kara Swisher where he says that he is staying with WordPress for the rest of his life. (0:33) Rebecca Gill – Owns a WordPress agency called WebSavvy Marketing that is located in Traverse City MI. Rebecca is an SEO Consultant and provides a lot of education about SEO. (0:50) Naomi Bush – runs a company called Gravity Plus. She builds products to help people do more with Gravity Forms. (1:03) Changing WordPress Marketspace: Naomi – Has a focused product centered around Gravity Forms in her business. Ninja forms keeps up with the changes and offers an inexpensive forms solution for WordPress users. There are a lot of people that wanted to get into the WordPress “gold rush”. Even though there is a lot of competition in WordPress it still has a broad ecosystem. (2:23) Rebecca– would not consider going back into a market with stock themes. She would consider the plugin market. You need to think carefully about the saturated theme market and support that comes with Themes. There is not a lot of money in that market anymore. (2:56) Brad – There is saturation in the WordPress market. There are many agencies and freelancers that build websites using WordPress. (4:05) Future of WordPress: There has to be an effort to simplify the WordPress experience. Brad – WebDevStudios is 100% WordPress. They can have applications that evolve using APIs and integrate with other systems. They are always looking at what is new and interesting but they still plan on building on WordPress. (5:51) Rebecca – Many businesses are coming to agencies after they have flopped on an in-house experience. They are looking for external expertise. People are realizing that they have made a big mistake sometimes after their SEO drops on a redesign and their traffic has changed. (12:15) Naomi – Gravity forms has been waiting for the new editing experience before making a lot of changes. Add-ins will need to integrate with the software. Naomi has seen that different 3rd parties to plugins have had different approaches to blocks. She will wait to see how this changes in newer releases. (17:16) Brad – Automattic is in the business to make money. There is a new verticle for blocks with vendors. Website builders will need to make a decision on what they use. Brad does not feel that Gutenberg WordPress users will have an advantage in the development space of WordPress. You still need a design eye when creating websites so it is nice to be able to use structured themes when you can. He fears that the impact of Gutenberg may influence the reputation of WordPress. (14:15) Opportunities for Growth in WordPress: Rebecca – a freelancer or small business agency can concentrate on Gutenberg support for users. Many clients will just want somebody to do the work and not want to learn the blocks themselves. There will always be service opportunities for SEO with website audits and training. (21:15) Training: Rebecca uses Learndash and WooCommerce for courses. She uses GoToMeeting for group or one on one training. There are still clients that just want you to do the work and will pay for that. (27:21) Naomi – Pick a space to specialize and find a niche if you can. Understand your customer and provide a solution for what they need. (22:39) Training: Naomi creates field guides and links to relative documentation for her customers. (28:36) Brad – freelancers will need to understand their WordPress product and also the customer. Many WebDevStudio customers have not shown an interest or desire to know what Gutenberg is about. The Gutenberg discussion has brought the conversation to using page builders like Beaver Builder. (23:54) Training: Documentation with screen sharing is provided to clients. There is training provided around user permissions for clients so they can understand how to add a user who can safely navigate the site. The more information you provide to your clients, the better off they will be. Matt continues with Season 8 with the second roundtable episode talking to Jennifer Bourn, Davinder Singh Kainth and Chris Badgett. This panel represents the thought leaders in the WordPress community and they have been working in the WordPress space for a long time by adapting to the changes in WordPress that are impacting their businesses. They finish the episode with projections of WordPress.com and WordPress.org. She co-authors a course called Profitable Project Plan that helps designers and developers improve their business. Jennifer is a co-organizer of the Meetup in Sacramento and also WordCamp Sacramento. (0:46) Davinder Singh Kainth – Designs and develops for direct clients and white label clients for several agencies. He has several niche websites for training and recently launched his first podcast called Smart Web Creators. (1:06) Chris Badgett – Chris is the co-founder of LifterLMS, a WordPress solution for creating, selling and protecting online courses. He has worked as a freelance WordPress implementer and built a successful freelance agency. He has the podcast for course creators called LMSCast. (1:34) What you will learn in this Episode: Changes in WordPress: Jennifer – Day to Day interaction with clients is showing how much WordPress has matured. It used to be a growth area across the board. Now there is growth at the bottom and the top. Jennifer is seeing a squeeze in the middle where there is so much competition. Onboarding a client with processes is so important to see continued success with the middle clients. The “race to the bottom” has so much competition that in order to be profitable you need repeatable processes. (2:53) Chris – The landscape is changing for online courses because of the ease and power of page builders. The tools make WordPress so much easier to use. It becomes less important now that a website is built on WordPress. Chris is still seeing stable growth on the product side and WordPress is still great for a customized solution where extendibility is needed. Enterprise and larger businesses will pay for premium solutions. (6:15) Davinder – people are finding out that WordPress is not “free” even though it is open source. Themes and plugins that are needed for added functionality cost money and will not fit into the $30.00 a month solution offered by a WIX or Squarespace. Davinder is seeing agency level pricing going up and WordPress tools are now being priced correctly. WordPress still allow you to have total ownership and control of your design and data. (10:29) Theory of New Customer Cycle: There are still customers that are growing their businesses where a startup website no longer works for them. Davinder – efficiency of the page builders lets freelancers handle the middle market and create a niche. It allows a freelancer to work with the business to see how much revenue is being generated from a client's website. (13:47) Chris – is seeing the diffusion of innovation in the WordPress community. Customers who purchased LifterLMS may need additional customization to build a solution. A client can look at themes, content and request help from freelancers that are considered successful LMSLifter builders. (16:22) Adding Verticles for Agency Business Growth: Jennifer – She has seen the client base shift in Bourn Creative. Their agency work is no longer focused on startups with limited budgets. Many of her clients are approaching her agency with a website design that needs added features and functionality along with great design. The focus in the business has shifted to long-term partnerships with clients and they have fewer partnerships. The agency has been successful with the shift using retainer projects. She has found if you do not diversify your income stream, you may just burn out. (24:02) Jennifer has also found that offering continuing support for that client with content management or ongoing service often works. You need to ask the client to focus on one thing and try to master it and make it a habit. Then you can offer products that have the biggest impact and provide the most money per hour. (37:22) Davinder – The WordPress has expanded geographically and across many continents. There are more and more people coming into the WordPress space and creating SASS products. Titles in the WordPress space (such as a developer or designer) are being shed as well. There is more opportunity for implementors. (28:15) It is important to get things right and educate the customer. You cannot help the customer much that wants the cheap solution. A client does not care about the back end because they do not interact with it. Try to recognize the “Perfectionist Bug” and do not deliver more than the customer requests. Restrict yourself to the domain you are most comfortable in and reach out to other people in your community for specific expertise. (18:45) Chris – People are no longer buying a WordPress website. They are looking for a platform or business opportunity and need a solution. A consultant needs to adapt with the times and help a client get results with a small investment. You can advise but have resources available to offer a solution. (33:37) Chris has noticed that the market ranges. His strategy is to get the client to build the site and then let them come back when they realize they need a more robust solution. It is possible to address the market. (35:56) Forecasting the Future of WordPress: Davinder – Thinks the WordPress community will remain as it is now but free features will be offered on WordPress.com. WordPress has never been a good product maker but has built a strong open source community around WordPress.org. WordPress.com will offer more features that can make Automattic more money. There will always be a blurred message around WordPress.org unless you address the hosting dilemma. (45:34) Jennifer – WordPress.com will continue to grow and compete with WIX and Squarespace and will become easier. WordPress.org will still continue for the enterprise that needs functionality and full control. There seems to be a divisiveness with Gutenberg around core but it will continue to grow. (46:56) Chris – WordPress.com is trying to have its cake and eat it too with 3rd party plugins. The support channels may end up being stressed because of the knowledge needed to support all those plugins. The open source WordPress.org will still see a struggle in the marketplace around the branding issue. (49:12) Matt – sees WordPress.com becoming more of an app like experience. WordPress.org may be selling and supporting functionality to WordPress.com. Features may be offered for a cost through the application with a 3rd party marketplace being expanded.
