Man muss ihn einfach lieben.
Is now the worst time ever to be a high school baseball player hoping to be recruited by a D1? Loden Sports co-founder Matt Pajak joins Dustin McComas to discuss the upcoming changes to college baseball's scholarship limit for D1 programs and roster sizes and how that impacts high school players. Plus, the two highlight examples of big league players who didn't take the traditional power conference route, and discuss the importance of athleticism, speed and how to measure it with the help of Loden Sports.
“I don't have anything. Never did have anything. Never will have anything.”The Tale of Barbara Loden's Unsung MasterpieceIn the late 1960s, actress Barbara Loden came across a newspaper article about a woman on trial for bank robbery who thanked the judge for her sentence. Perplexed by what could drive a woman to such a point, Loden crafted a story that would become her sole feature film, Wanda. Despite being married to acclaimed director Elia Kazan, Loden struggled to get the film made, eventually scraping together a meager budget and shooting on 16mm. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the One-and-Done series with a conversation about Wanda.A Portrait of Aimlessness and Apathy in Rural AmericaOn the surface, Wanda may seem like a bleak and meandering character study, but it's precisely those qualities that make it such a fascinating film. We dive into Loden's raw, cinema verité-style approach to storytelling, which eschews traditional Hollywood structure in favor of a more naturalistic portrayal of its titular character's directionless existence. From her passive acceptance of a divorce that leaves her children in the care of their father to her listless drift into a life of crime with a small-time thief, Wanda's journey is one of quiet desperation and longing for purpose.Throughout our discussion, we grapple with the film's deliberate pacing, sparse cinematography, and lack of a traditional character arc. While Pete finds the film's unrelenting bleakness and Wanda's apparent lack of agency challenging, Andy argues that the film's power lies in its unflinching portrayal of a marginalized woman's experience.Wanda may not be an easy watch, but it remains a powerful and uncompromising portrait of a woman adrift in a world that offers her little in the way of hope or purpose. Barbara Loden's singular vision and commitment to telling an untold story make this a film that demands to be seen and discussed. Despite our differing reactions to the film, we both agree that Wanda is a work of undeniable importance and a testament to Loden's talent as a filmmaker. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in.

Hello Brave Friends! On this story episode, #163, we are exploring one mom's experience, when not one but TWO of her seemingly thriving, healthy children were diagnosed, right in the middle of high school, with a rare genetic disorder. Megan Loden was blindsided, not only by her twin daughter's diagnosis, but by the slow fade of her typical community into the background, as she stepped into her own medical motherhood. And then a doctor recommended she look up groups online and the rest is history. Welcome to today's story episode: Community is Everything Megan Loden was a freelance writer before her world was turned upside down and she would love nothing more than to help others feel less alone through her writing now, as many seasoned veterans to the rare parenting world did when she was lost and terrified of her childrens' diagnoses. Having a child (or two) with a rare genetic disease is not for the faint of heart, but she wants to assure you, if she can manage, so can you!Find Megan Loden on Instagram here.Find Megan Loden's Website here. Ever found yourself face to face with unexpected health complications during pregnancy, wondering how to navigate the path ahead? I invite you to join me in this special episode, featuring Dr. Amy Tiffany, a board certified physician specializing in internal and lifestyle medicine, and a board certified health and life coach. Dr. Tiffany bravely peels back layers of her own birthing stories, fraught with challenges including gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and heart failure. From weeks-long hospital stays away from her other children, breastfeeding hurdles, to forming that elusive bond with her newborns, Dr. Tiffany's journey is a harrowing tale of resilience in the face of adversity. However, a silver lining emerged when she took the reins of her health—her struggle with gestational diabetes inspired her to become a fervent advocate for women's health, educating them about the high risks of type II diabetes and heart disease that can occur post-pregnancy. This journey led her to become her own doctor, offering a unique perspective on self-advocacy and the importance of health education for all mothers-to-be.Parenting is no stroll in the park, and Dr. Tiffany isn't one to shy away from the hard truths. As our story unfolds, she shares her take on raising children in an environment that encourages learning from failure and resilience. She stresses the importance of intentional parenting, and maintaining a positive mindset, even when times get tough. As we delve into her experiences, we find precious nuggets of wisdom that all parents, new and seasoned, can take away. Tune into our episode and join Dr. Tiffany on this emotional journey of life, learning, and self-discovery.Connect with Dr. Tiffany at vitalitymwc.com Coaching offerSupport the showConnect with Kelly Hof at kellyhof.comMedical Disclaimer:This podcast is intended as a safe space for women to share their birth experiences. Team Vintage Sand returns to the airwaves with our October episode, a neat bookend to Episode 31 wherein we explored our favorite final films by great directors. Here we present Episode 41--Gala Premieres: Our Favorite First Films by Great Directors. To begin, we decided to establish some parameters to spare you, our tenacious audience, any pointless discussion.. The first is that we tried to avoid directors about whom we have already discoursed at great length in these pages. The second, what we termed the Julie Dash Rule, is that we would only focus on first films by directors who went on to long and predominantly successful careers in feature films. That's why you won't find movies like "Boys Don't Cry"(Kim Pierce), "One False Move" (Carl Franklin), "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (Benh Zeitlin) or one-hit-wonders like Laughton's "Night of the Hunter" or Loden's "Wanda" here. Plus, we already did a full episode on one-hit wonders—that would be Episode 10. (The fact that the brilliant Dash has only been able to make one film in three decades is a mystery to be explored in another episode or two—utterly inexplicable). Our last rule is the Rosebud Rule; we tried to exclude any first films that were too obvious to spend time on. That would include "Citizen Kane", "The Maltese Falcon", "The 400 Blows", "Breathless", "Badlands", "Boyz ‘n' the Hood", "Reservoir Dogs" and similar fare all the way through "Get Out". So join us as we bring back those wonderful moments where you wandered into a film by a new director and left the theater realizing that you had just witnessed the birth of a new voice to be reckoned with.
