The year was 1987. In Bedford, Ohio, a high school junior who had never played sports was invited to a drug awareness retreat at a local recreation center. During a break in the retreat, he would walk over to a basketball and a hoop and begin to shoot baskets. When he got home from the retreat, he told his mom “I think I want to play basketball.” His mom simply said “well, then watch the games on TV.” From that retreat to this very day, that kid from Bedford Ohio has loved the game of basketball. He would lay in his bed at night and listen to the voice of Joe Tait and games on AM radio. When games were on local TV, he would watch them too. He would study the players and their moves. They were his coach. The TV was his practice gym. There was one player that he really liked. A point guard. He identified with the player, although he was a FAR better shooter. Maybe the best shooter ever. That player was Mark Price. That kid from Bedford, Ohio was me. Today, I have the absolute honor to interview one of the few heroes I have in my life. I use that word “hero” very carefully. I am particular about who I would give that label. Today, I get to interview a man of faith. A man respected by fans not only in Cleveland but across the NBA landscape. Today I get to interview a player that represented Cleveland in an amazing career with our hometown Cavaliers. My guest today is my new friend, one of my few heroes and former Cleveland Cavaliers guard, Mark Price.

I love this. I'm going to share with you my top five picks for best NBA broadcasters. You may agree with me or not but I'll give you backup and observations on why I chose who I chose. I'll give you a few in my notes here. #4) Joe Tait..."Have a good night everybody." #3 Bill King...think about this, he called the A's games, the Raiders games and the Warriors games. "Holy Toledo!" And he's a recipient of baseball's highest honor for broadcasters, the Ford C. Frick award. How about #5? Al McCoy. The radio broadcast voice of the Phoenix Suns since 1972. Yeah, that says 1972! He's the longest tenured NBA announcer with 49 years on the air for the same team. And, for all you load management folk, Al has only missed, get this, one game in the entire 49 years. One. That's suiting up and coming to play every day. "Shazam!" Play along and see if you can figure out who I have at the top. You can probably get there on your own but you'll have to listen to find out who it really is. And let me know yours. Hit me up on twitter or comment on YouTube. @grantnapearshow
The Cleveland Cavaliers took the best team in the Association, the Phoenix Suns, into an overtime battle, finally running out of gas at the end 134-118. The Cavs were greatly undermanned with only a seven man rotation, but that didn’t stop Isaac “Ice” Okoro, who went toe-to-toe with one of the brightest young stars in the NBA, Devin Booker. Ice turned in a career performance tonight with 32 points on only 16 shots and six assists, while chipping three rebounds AND taking on the defensive assignment of Devin Booker. Nate “the Podcap Shaman” Smith shepherded first time (ever!) podcast guest Chris Francis into a deep dive on all things Cavaliers, covering all aspects of one of the more entertaining games of the year in a manner that would hopefully make the late great Cavs legend Joe Tait proud. They pay tribute to the man they call “Ice,” Nate allows Chris to nerd out on all the obscure stats, and they cover recent Cavs’ news regarding Anderson “Wild Thing” Varejao’s return, Love’s buyout/trade prospects, and a status report on sometimes controversial Cavs’ figures, Collin Sexton and JB Bickerstaff (#FREEBUCK shoutout to EG!). And of course, it wouldn’t be a complete CtB Podcap without some recommendations for your entertainment.

On today's Locked on Cavs Chris Manning and Evan Dammarell discuss the passing of Joe Tait, the Cavaliers making the playoffs, Kevin Love's role, and Collin Sexton's future with the team. Plus, a live reaction to the Cavs signing Quinn Cook. Here are the bullet points: Joe Tait spent 39 years as the voice for the Cleveland Cavaliers and his calls are iconic like Tom Hamilton with the Indians and Jim Donovan with the Browns. Tait set the standard for what it takes to be a radio play-by-play announcer for the Cavaliers and also had an impact on the television side of things as well. The Cleveland Cavaliers have a brutal stretch in March and early April to start their second half of the season. Because of this, the team's goal of making the playoffs feels a lot more unrealistic. Kevin Love is expected to return to Cleveland's lineup at some point. When he does, his impact will be immediate as it will allow the Cavaliers to run a more modern offense in terms of three-point shooting. Cleveland general manager Koby Altman called this season an evaluation period for the team. The second half of the season will be an evaluation period for Love in particular on whether or not he's tradeable this upcoming offseason. Is Collin Sexton worth a maximum contract? If he wasn't playing in Cleveland probably not. But, because of the smaller market, the Cavaliers will have no choice but to pay top dollar for Sexton's services. Tim Alcorn has been a fixture calling high school sports in Northeast Ohio. More than 30 years and many awards. But due to the tragic passing of longtime Cavs tv play by play guy Fred McLeod, the Cavs restructured their broadcast lineup, and hired Alcorn to handle radio play by play. He is now doing what his idol, and mentor Joe Tait did. And the biggest irony is that as a kid in New England he used to listen late at night to Tait call Cavs games on 1100 Radio, which boomed into his New Hampshire home radio. I hope you enjoy the listen. As I post this, Tim is starting his play by play call of the Cavs and the Toronto Raptors at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/john-telich/message
