Riders Update with Britton Gray/Johnny Manziel did not enjoy his time in the CFL Johnny Manziel has been making the podcast rounds and he doesn't hold back about playing in the CFL. While he states that he fell out of love of playing football and competing, he also took shots at the Canadian Football League by saying the league "used him" for clicks and likes. The CFL faithful have responded heavily by calling out Manziel for trying to cover up the fact that he wasn't good enough to play in the CFL. Britton Gray joins us to discuss Johnny's comments and he has an update from Riders camp as well. Date: May 29, 2024 Name of podcast: Backstage Pass Radio Episode title and number: S6: E9: Bill Brown (Houston Astros Hall of Fame Broadcaster - Voices of the GameSHOW SUMMARY:My neighbor and Hall of Fame sportscaster Bill Brown, "Brownie," steps up to the mic, not for play-by-play, but for a heart-to-heart on his 30-year love affair with sports broadcasting and the Houston Astros. As we peel back the curtain on the meticulous world of commentating, from gripping hockey games to the narrative-laden pastime of baseball, Brownie opens the vault of his personal and professional highs, including his cherished induction into the Astros' Hall of Fame. But it's not just about the roar of the crowd; we swing into his life's other passions—golf, photography, and the community ties that root us all, inspired by figures like my own father. With Brownie's storytelling, we're carried through the rhythms of a broadcaster's game day—an early rise, pre-game prep through the final call, and the post-game wrap-up. Discover the unseen challenges, the dedication to craft, and the importance of staying nimble on your feet, especially when the unexpected rain delay throws you a curveball. Then, we step into the bittersweet reality for local broadcasters during the postseason, where the deep-seated connections to their team are put on pause, and the airwaves are commanded by national voices—a stark contrast to the familiar cadence they provide all season. But wait, there's more than just calls and commentary. Brownie guides us through the world of sports memorabilia, sharing a poignant tale involving Nolan Ryan, and the complexities of baseball's unwritten rules, from retaliation tactics to when to hang up the headset for family time. In a reflective swing, we return to the broadcast booth after retirement, diving into Brownie's passion for writing and the controversial MLB sign-stealing scandal he experienced firsthand. Lastly, we capture the essence of life's richness as Brownie illustrates his journey into photography, threading it with the joy of golf, and the powerful act of giving back within our community, leaving us inspired to find those intersections in our own lives. Welcome to Church Pew Sports Ep 123 - A Candid Conversation with Dan Patrick - Hall of Fame Broadcaster We welcome in the legendary Dan Patrick for a rollicking conversation about his new book (more infor below) and pretty much everything else in the sports world...plus his church connections and a most "unique" interaction with the offering plate as a kid. Cohen team up with some of America's greatest* comedy writers to tell you everything and nothing about America's sport!** *“greatest” is actually just a bad type-o for “mediocre” **No, not darts, we mean pro football. (book on professional darts coming never) Did you know . . . Tom Brady is a very good quarterback. (True, but only according to statistics and accomplishments.) The formation of the NFL took place in an auto dealership. The founders started an institution and also were convinced to buy rust-proofing for it. (Half true.) The Carolina Panthers originated as a book club but turned to football when they couldn't agree on which John Grisham novel to read. (Maybe true. Research isn't our thing.) The Occasionally Accurate Annals of Football is a love letter to America's favorite game, full of highlights, history, great plays and players, scandals, Super Bowls, and a series of lies, idiotic theories, baseless conspiracies, a diet that may kill you and, of course, a poorly-written haiku. The book takes the credibility Dan Patrick has built up over a stellar broadcast career (ESPN, NBC Sports, something called “Peacock”) and risks it all with these falsehoods, half-truths, and even some quarter-truths.

Pittsburgh Penguins Hall of Fame radio play-by-play announcer Mike Lange is taking a cautious approach to returning to the broadcast booth for the new NHL season. It will be Lange's 46th season. The Penguins announced earlier this month the 72-year old Lange will sit out the beginning of the 2021 season as a precatuion due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I've decided to opt out of the start of the season after huddling with doctors about the course of COVID-19," Lange said in a statement. "They suggested it probably is best to receive the vaccinations before going back in the booth." It was in 2013 during the NHL lockout that Lange sat down with SportsJam host Doug Doyle to tlak about his amazing career and his love of music. Doyle admits Lange was one of his idols and it was listening to Lange's thrilling play-by-play calls that got him interested in sports broadcasting at an early age. In 2001, Lange received the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his outstandign work as an NHL broadcaster.

My friends, the coronavirus pandemic is affecting each of in some way. I urge you, Live Inspired community, to keep you + your loved ones happy + healthy. I want today's episode to be that reprieve, instill some sense of normalcy and provide positivity + hope in this uncertain time. Dick Vitale became a legendary voice in college basketball through his charisma, drive, and passion. As one of the pioneers of ESPN, Dick has been inducted to 14 Hall of Fames, is recognized for his trademark vernacular and exuberates an unrivaled enthusiasm that truly sets him apart. Today, Dick shares the challenges he's had to overcome, his focus and attention on his family, and his passion for advocating for cancer research through The V Foundation. This conversation reminded me and will remind you, that we are called to be a champion. SHOW NOTES: Dick's parents were uneducated factory workers that worked hard and gave him love, direction and guidance. "Richie, don't ever believe in can't. You can be what you want to be." "Richie, be good to people and they will be good to you." As a young child, Dick faced ridicule from his peers because he lost an eye. His mom helped him see his worth. Dick started chasing his dream of being a college coach by coaching junior high. What is it that allows a failing team to become one that is successful? The leader has to set the tone. "I want to be everybody's friend. I look for the good in people." Disco Dick: A highlight of Dick's career is coaching at University of Detriot and in 1977 defeating eventual NCAA champion Marquette during a 21-game winning streak. To celebrate, Dick danced at center court. "My personality, intensity and emotion did not belong in the NBA." Weeks after being fired from his job as head coach of NBA's Detroit Pistons, Dick was hired to call ESPN's first college basketball game. He's still calling games 41 years later. "I have pride in myself. I work harder now than I ever did." Dick is proud to serve on the board of Jim Valvano's V Foundation for Cancer Research and its contribution of over $230 million for cancer research. Watch Jim Valvano's iconic ESPY speech here. "I'm obsessed with raising money for kids battling cancer" "I'm so blessed. If it ends today, it's been a ride that's exceeded any dream I ever had." "The only place you'll find success ahead of work is in the dictionary." To learn more and donate, visit The V Foundation for Cancer Research.
