In 'Meanwhile', Jacqueline Woodson and Catherine Gund weave together the words of literary legends to explore the intersection of art, grief, and social justice.Description: James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Muhammad Ali and Nina Simone are some of the artists featured in the moving new film “Meanwhile”, from National Book Award-winner Jacqueline Woodson and Emmy-nominated producer & director Catherine Gund. Their meditations on grief, art, breath and more are beautifully woven together as the film poses the question, how do you keep breathing amidst the chaos? Catalyzed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the police killing of George Floyd, Gund and Woodson tap into our shared existence. The artists featured in the docu-poem, with a haunting soundtrack by Meshell Ndegeocello, work through questions of race, political violence, resistance and identity — so much of what shapes our lives and relationships. “This is not a love letter to this country but to us inside this country,” says Woodson in the film. “We see us. We love us. We make eye contact and nod to us”. In this conversation with Laura Flanders, the trio of longtime friends discuss the film from Aubin Pictures, the losses they experienced in the 80s, and how the arts and poetry can compel us to enact change. Can we reclaim the “meanwhile”? All that, plus a commentary from Laura on hers.Guests:•  Catherine Gund: Producer & Director, Meanwhile; Filmmaker & Founder, Aubin Pictures•  Jacqueline Woodson: Writer & Performer, Meanwhile; Author, Brown Girl Dreaming; Founder, Baldwin for the Arts;  The Elders Project, ColumbiaWatch the special report released on YouTube May 16th 5pm ET; PBS World Channel May 18th, and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). After so many years of writing-as-response, she reflects on the value of sustained research into one subject. “I'd been wanting to explore new directions I could take my writing, and at the L.A. And for the last two weeks, since the Oct. 7 Hamas massacre in southern Israel, Harary has been on the ground in Israel distributing 25,000 toys for Israeli kids and their families who have been affected by the war with Hamas. And that's not all. His personal charity is buying new beds for the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem to boost capacity ahead of expected casualties. Meanwhile, the Canadian philanthropist has also personally driven boxes of socks and supplies to army bases all over Israel, and his charity is helping a Canadian-led operation sending a food truck to feed soldiers before they embark on what's expected to be an unprecedented ground assault on the Gaza Strip against Hamas. Speakers: Eric Bishop-von Wettberg (he/him), Travis Reynolds (he/him), and Dan Tobin (he/him) We are launching the Consortium on Crop Genetic Heritage, a group of researchers and practitioners who view the maintenance and promotion of crop diversity as critical to building resilient agricultural systems positioned to address climate change, increase access to culturally meaningful crops, and promote empowerment and self-determination. Through our work, we conduct basic and applied research, collaborate with domestic and international partners, build networks and capacity, facilitate convenings, offer training, train students, and publish report and peer-reviewed publications. We value diversity, equity, inclusion, participatory processes, community engagement, and action-oriented scholarship based on the principle that crop diversity must be viewed and supported as a public good. Our partners include non-profit organizations, farmer collectives, BIPOC communities, smallholder farmers, international research institutions, and seed libraries, among others. Eric Eric von Wettberg is a Gund fellow, an associate professor of Plant and Soil Science at the University of Vermont, director of UVM's Graduate Program in Food Systems, and a member of UVM's Consortium for Crop Genetic Heritage. As a conservation geneticist working to preserve the genetic diversity of legume crops, his research uses a combination of laboratory, greenhouse, and field approaches. Working in the legacy of the great crop geneticist, Nikolai Vavilov, many of Eric's recent projects have supported international crop genebanks by exploring and adding to the genetic diversity held in their collections. Travis Travis Reynolds is a Gund fellow and an assistant professor in the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics at the University of Vermont. Dr. Reynolds' has studied the relationships between farm management, economic development, and ecosystem services – with an emphasis on poverty alleviation – for the past ten years. His work has been published in top interdisciplinary and agricultural development journals including World Development, Journal of Development Studies, Journal of Agricultural Economics, and Food Security. Dan Daniel Tobin is a rural sociologist who is an assistant professor in Community Development and Applied Economics, a Gund Fellow, and graduate faculty in Food Systems. His research focuses on how small- and medium-scale farmers respond to external influences like market forces, policy mechanisms, and environmental changes. Particular interests include sociology of agriculture, development sociology, the political economy of agricultural development, crop diversity conservation, and seed systems. Eric, Travis, and Dan spoke at UVM on December 10th, 2021.

"Súvisí to napríklad s výchovou detí a s detskými ambíciami. Keď všade počúvame o politikoch, vedcoch a rôzne iné dôležité profesie sú veľmi často označované mužským rodom, tak dievčatá si niekedy ani neuvedomia, že by mohli byť političkami, profesorkami, vedkyňami. A potom naozaj chýbajú v tom verejnom priestore," hovorí Lucia Molnár Satinská a odporúča malé cvičenie. Z pozostalosti svojho otca Júliusa Satinského pripravila rozšírené vydanie Rozprávok uja Klobásu a knihy Listy z onoho sveta, Expedície, Listy Oľge a Gundžovníky. He also reflects on spending the first two years of his pro career in Cleveland - the last year of the Richfield Coliseum and the first year of "The Gund."

The golf conversations no one else is having after Tiger Woods won his 5th Masters. When Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City has an Iron Throne on its concourse for Royals fans to sit on and pose for pictures, this Game Of Thrones phenomenon has officially gotten out of hand. Slovart - Knihy v slovenčine a češtine

Július Satinský bol vášnivým pisateľom listov. Korešpondoval si počas svojho života so slávnymi osobnosťami kultúrneho života, širokou rodinou aj s deťmi svojich známych. V 60. rokoch 20. storočia jeho švagrovia emigrovali zo Slovenska. Julo sa rozhodol udržiavať rodinné vzťahy pomocou vlastnoručne vyrábaného časopisu – Gundžovníka. Gundžovníky vyrábal poctivo od roku 1967 do roku 1984. Dochovalo sa 87 čísel. Chýba len prvý ročník, 1967. Časopisy majú kronikársky rozmer, informujú o dianí v Bratislave a v Československu. Vychádzali v dvoch exemplároch, jeden smeroval do Ameriky, druhý do Švajčiarska. Po 50 rokoch sa Gundžovníky vynárajú zo Satinského pozostalosti vďaka editorskej práci dcéry Lucie Molnár Satinskej. číta: Božidara Turzonovová, pripravil: Dado Nagy

He has spent the 45 years since working to defeat that disease, to prevent related blindness and even to restore sight to the blind. Over $700 million later, he now hopes that “within a generation we will be able to eradicate blindness caused by retinal disease!” In 2013, I first connected with Gordon for a Forbes piece that included a live interview we conducted then. It is hard to imagine how one copes with the complete loss of one’s vision. Gordon partnered with his wife. He says, “After coming to terms with how our lives would be altered by the disease, my wife and I committed ourselves to a comprehensive research effort that would make something positive for others out of our own difficult experiences.” “When I was diagnosed with RP almost 50 years ago very little was known about the retina. There was very little research and no evidence-based treatments for retinal disease,” he adds. Gordon continues, “We recognized that first building a critical mass of sound scientific knowledge about the retina and retinal diseases was essential to finding treatments and cures. That year we teamed with a number of other families affected by retinal disease to create the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation, now called the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Our collective dream was to drive the research that would find treatments and cures for all retinal degenerative diseases.” ------------------ Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/29EbS4t. This Sunday Robert Breining and Aaron Laxton will be speaking witht he founder of Dab the AIDS Bear Project. Back in 1981 when Dab 1st had friends starting to die from AIDS, the hospitals wouldn't allow visitors into the patient's room unless you wore protective garments (gowns, masks etc.) because they were afraid of this new disease and were not sure how the virus was passed. Because of this, people were usually close to death and had at least one opportunistic infection when they were diagnosed and hospitalized. You could see even seasoned health care professional recoil in fear and not wanting to touch the patients. Even close friends were hesitant or scared to visit their friends in the hospital. Dab started buying Gund teddy bears and giving them to friends so they wouldn't have to feel so alone, abandoned and afraid.
