Nicholas grew up in Rhode Island, United States, where he formed his first band, The Vikings. The band performed cover versions of popular rhythm and blues hits of the time, along with songs by the Rolling Stones. In the mid-1960s, he formed the Black Cat Blues Band with Duke Robillard, Fran Christina and Steve Nardella. Around 1970, he formed the Boogie Brothers with Nardella. After attending the Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1970, the band eventually moved on to San Francisco, California in 1972 per-request of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. By 1974, Nicholas had moved to Chicago, Illinois and began playing with Big Walter Horton. During his time in Chicago, he would record music with Horton, Boogie Woogie Red and Robert Lockwood, Jr. In 1974, he created his own single, "Too Many Bad Habits" for Blind Pig Records. Moving to Providence, Rhode Island, he formed his own band, Johnny Nicholas and the Rhythm Rockers, which included Kaz Kazanoff on saxophone, Terry Bingham on drums, Sarah Brown on bass guitar and Ronnie Earl on electric guitar. Nicholas began his stint with Asleep at the Wheel in 1978, when the band asked him to perform with them. During his off time, he would travel to various cities for solo shows, but would often visit Louisiana to play with Link Davis and Cajun accordion player Nathan Abshire. By 1980, however, Nicholas decided to take time off from music in order to raise a family. in 1991 Nicholas returned to recording blues music with Johnny Shines and Snooky Pryor on the album Back to the Country. After returning to music, Johnny has released one studio album and three live albums on Topcat Records while also returning to regular live shows.

It's a real good time in the next hour of The Roadhouse. I've got three artists who are new to The Roadhouse, a couple more tracks from the Alligator 50th anniversary collection, and some folks who make fairly regular appearances in the show. GA-20, Jamiah Rogers, Tom Feldmann & Noah Levy, William Clarke, and Johnny Nicholas all take the little bandstand in the corner. I'm sure you'll agree that it's 15 great tracks to fill another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

For the last 18 years, Netto Rockefeller's been working with his own band, running the Blue Crawfish record label, and touring with US and European musicians in Brasil such as Willie Buck, Tail Dragger, Lazy Lester, Johnny Nicholas, Quique Gomez, Wallace Coleman, and Steve Guyger, just to name a few. He was inspired as a teenager by Brazil's most successful blues band, Blues Estilicos. Netto describes the communal spirit of Brazil's blues scene, being mentored by Flávio Guimarães and other older Brazilian blues musicians. His ninth CD, The Latin American Mojo Style of Netto Rockfeller, was his first one to be recorded in the US (at Kid Andersen's famed studio Greaseland in San Jose CA), and features John Blues Boyd, Whitney Shay, Kid Andersen, Jim Pugh and June Core. As the title indicates, it's an upbeat CD with both Latin American and straight ahead American blues sensibilities, featuring songs sung in Portuguese and a cover of a Los Pakines hit (Peru's answer to The Shadows). Netto talked to us from his studio at Blue Crawfish records in São Carlos Do Pinhal, Brazil. Take a blues journey with No Border Blues, the only blues podcast focused on international blues artists and hidden blues scenes around the world. Delmark recording artist Johnny Burgin and producer Stephanie Tice shine a spotlight on notable international blues performers, discuss the blues scenes in their home countries, and present intimate and exclusive musical performances. Stef couldn't make this interview, sorry!-- but she will be back in the next episdoe. Regresan los románticos escoceses Del Amitri con su reflexión sobre el brexit inglés y los suaves Belle and Sebastian con un disco en directo repleto de sus éxitos y acabamos con Mike Viola y su tristeza sobre el confinamiento (...todos los bares están cerrados…) y una vieja canción de Juan Pablo, a la espera de su álbum, The Rhythm of the City.⦁ Graham Parker, One Guitar ⦁ James Maddock, She's Got My Heart ⦁ The Boxcar Suite, Lit Hunk ⦁ The Moons, Today ⦁ The Moons, Maybe I'm The Perfect Man (For You)⦁ John Paul Keith, How Can You Walk Away ⦁ Chickenbone Slim, I'm A Vampire Baby ⦁ Chickenbone Slim, Little Victory ⦁ Chickenbone Slim, My Bad Luck ⦁ Johnny Nicholas, Mistaken Identity ⦁ Johnny Nicholas, Tight Pants ⦁ Del Amitri, Close Your Eyes & Think Of England ⦁ Belle And Sebastian, My Wandering Days Are Over (Live) ⦁ Mike Viola, USA Up All Night⦁ John Paul Keith & Will Sexton, A Little Bit Of Loving
The next hour of The Roadhouse is another hour of fitting together puzzle pieces to make a beautiful whole. Chickenbone Slim, Johnny Nicholas, Harmonica Shah & Howard Glazer, Kirk Fletcher, and Indigenous fill out the edition. While it's hard to tell how those artists all fit together, let's give it a shot in the hope that it really will turn out to be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 827th Roadhouse.

It only takes a few seconds of watching Mike Bram play drums to know how much joy it brings him. The same can be said of talking to him about music and the incredible journey he’s been on since he climbed behind his first kit at just five years old. While Mike has spent the last several years on tour with Jason Mraz as both his drummer and musical director, it hasn’t stopped him from being kept busy by the likes of Cindy Cashdollar, Willie Nelson, Zac Brown, Joss Stone, G. Love and Special Sauce, and Johnny Nicholas, to name just a few. Currently, you can catch Mike behind his Gretsch Brooklyn series drum kit on the road with The Weight Band, performing the songs of the Band, with Jim Weider, Marty Grebb, Brian Mitchell, and Albert Rogers.
This edition of The Roadhouse moves along like a train down the rails. I've got a feel for some West Coast blues. Of course, that West Coast sound is really almost a migratory blues sound - moving from Texas to the coast. So, there's some Texas in this edition, too. Kirk Fletcher, Johnny Nicholas, Floyd Dixon, Nappy Brown, and The Mannish Boys all make for an hour of uncontrollable chair-dancing and what's clearly a solid hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Johnny Nicholas, Little Charlie & The Nightcats, Mitch Woods & His Rocket 88s, and Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne take us on an hour of uptempo blues - another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
The 360th Roadhouse is a bag of gems - little surprises and shining moments spread across an hour. Larry McCray, Ruthie Foster, Johnny Nicholas, Shemekia Copeland, and the Reba Russell Band provide some very nice moments in the hour. And, as I always promise, it's another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

Two years on, the Roadhouse rolls on with an edition that rolls back the calendar. The two-year anniversay of The Roadhouse is an hour of some of my favorites fro the previous 103 editions, but certainly not all. Some of the great artists include Joe White, Susan Tedeschi, Kelly Richey Band, Shannon Boshears, and Johnny Nicholas. Thanks to everyone who has subscribed, listened, mentioned, or written about The Roadhouse since its inception. It's not the finest blues you've never heard, but it's still the finest.

There's definitely a theme to this edition - let's just call it road music. It's the perfect blend of upbeat uptempo blues cuts to make your drive - wherever that may be - a little bit more sane and enjoyable. Percy Strother, Lonnie Mack, Johnny Nicholas, Candye Kane, and Holland K. Smith lead us down the road, with seven other great artists and another Roadhouse Rewound bringing up the rear. So, let's put the troubles in the rear-view mirror, even if only for an hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

This is the show the doctor ordered, providing your minimum weekly requirement of golden guitars, hip horns and happenin' harp. Byther Smith, The Mitchell Blues Band, Tab Benoit, Glamour Puss, and Johnny Nicholas step out from the pack this week. But, don't fool yourself – any of the other seven artists are fully capable of stealing the show. Throw in listener comments and a snappy Roadhouse Rewound segment, and you've got one full hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

Twelve cuts strong, The Roadhouse 030 is a bit more acoustic than the norm. Credit that to the dog days of summer at The Little Blue House On The Wetlands. Billy Jones, The Turnarounds, Louisiana Bob Kirkpatrick, Susan Tedeschi, and Johnny Nicholas lead the music. Listener comments, best wishes to Derek and thoughts on Katrina round out the 30th edition of The Roadhouse – the finest blues you've never heard.
