Brody Buster was a child prodigy on the harmonica and was already making appearances on major television shows like the Tonight's Show with Jay Leno and the 90's sitcom staple Full House, all before he turned 10 years old!!! Brody was baptized into the blues scene in Kansas City at a very early age and began forging a career that has allowed him to share the stage with the likes of B.B. King, Keb Mo, Quincy Jones, Chaka Kahn and others! As you'll hear in the episode, his battle with addiction nearly took him completely out of the game altogether, but thankfully, he's in recovery and back to playing live and he's got a brand-new record perfectly titled, Redemption, coming out in the Spring of 2025. Brody will also be playing one of the most unique gigs a guy could ever land this summer by performing on the Durango Blues Train in both May and August. Enjoy the episode! This week, it's a very special episode of Time Signatures as your host, Jim Ervin welcomes another legendary bluesman, Steve Nardella. Join Steve and Erv as they discuss his relocation to Michigan from the east coast in 1971-just to be closer to Chicago, the early Blues hangouts in Ann Arbor (Blind Pig, Mr. Flood's Party, Rick's American Cafe, etc), and his appearance in a supporting role at the 1972 Ann Arbor Blues Festival for Boogie Woogie Red, Lightnin Slim, and Johnny Shines-a recording he didn't know anything about. Steve also talked about his 1964 or ‘65 New York trip where he saw Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, and James Cotton. Great stories about jammin' with Stevie Ray Vaughan, and definitely an episode well worth your time.Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2CfHxv1Ha614CY85E8x017 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/steve.nardella.5 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rare3P56NWo&list=PL2C46EF8DE7B9D84D _________________________Facebook: Time SignaturesYouTube: Time SignaturesFacebook: Capital Area Blues SocietyWebsite: Capital Area Blues SocietyFriends of Time Signatures _______Website: University of Mississippi Libraries Blues ArchiveWebsite: Killer Blues Headstone ProjectWebsite: Blues Society Radio NetworkWebsite: Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation

Periodically on TRUST ME I KNOW WHAT I'm DOING , we share a SPOTLIGHT conversation and feature brief chats with an individual from the community about a special topic or a unique endeavor. In this spotlight episode, Aki Kumar shares his journey as a blues musician, discussing the universality of blues themes, the importance of being a lifelong student of the genre, and how his Desi identity influences his music. He reflects on the emotional outlet that blues provides and the lessons learned from performing. Aki also explores the relationship between art and identity, expressing optimism for the future of music and his upcoming album. Check out his website (akikumar.com) for news and details about upcoming shows! Now there are lots of people who love Bollywood music, and there are certainly a lot of people who love American blues music. But what happens when those two worlds meet? And that's what set the stage for a conversation I shared with Aki Kumar, a musician and singer who for over the past decade has been trying to ensure that the intersection of these two musical genres is a space that you need to pay attention to. Aki was born and raised in Mumbai and came to the US to study computer science - ok that part isn't without a playbook or blueprint. But with a passion for Indian music and a deep new embrace for American blues history and local blues performances, Aki set about to express himself by blending melodies from Hindi films with blues music, garnering a buzz for his performances everywhere, many local awards along the way, and the title of “San Jose's king of Bollywood Blues”. Now I have to tell you, that I caught one of his shows here in the Bay Area, and from experiencing Aki on stage, his singing, his killer harmonica style, and his superb band, I could not have asked for a more entertaining way to enjoy both true Americana mixed with some soulful imaginations of Indian music. Now for me this was all a pleasant surprise because I had made some natural assumptions about what Bollywood Blues might be, so as we began chatting, I asked him if he also made assumptions about persona or expectations when it came to his unique brand of making music?Like many, my heart and soul go out to those who are struggling as a result of the Los Angeles wildfires. Please help contribute to the American Red Cross, Mutual Aid LA Network, various Go FundMe efforts, Save the Children, and Baby2Baby. Hoping for a safe, peaceful, and supportive recovery for everyone.

Welcome to another episode of Twice 5 Miles Radio. I'm your host, James Navé. Today, I have the pleasure of bringing you a conversation with a remarkable blues musician, Henry Jones. Let me set the scene for you: it's mid-July 2024, and I'm emceeing at the Black Mountain Blues Festival at the outdoor stage of Bush Garden Restaurant. As I introduce myself to Henry, I'm immediately struck by his ease in conversation. We hit it off right away, diving into a discussion that danced around metaphorical and poetic nuances of life, even though, on the surface, it seemed like we were just passing the time. Henry's use of language, his sparkling eyes, and his genuine eagerness to engage left a lasting impression on me. When he took the stage, I settled back, anticipating a good set. I was not disappointed. Henry's performance was a masterful blend of blues music and storytelling that not only made everyone feel like summertime was theirs but also left us all eager for more of his captivating narratives. The next day, I had the pleasure of introducing Henry once again. Both shows were distinct yet equally captivating, showcasing the very best of old-school blues. Henry proudly identifies as an old-school blues player, drawing inspiration from the blues legends of the 30s, 40s, and 50s who emerged from the porches of the southern United States. Henry resides in Tupelo, Mississippi, where he plans to host a monthly blues gathering on the porch of Elvis Presley's childhood home. Henry Jones's journey into music began in the Midwest, born to parents with roots in Mississippi. After a house party where the DJ left behind crates of records, Henry immersed himself in music, listening to everything from ZZ Hill to Johnny Cash. He sold an old car to buy a pawn shop guitar, and the blues became the backbone of his unique style. Henry's sound is an original blend of pre-war acoustic blues, hill country blues, rock, and folk, a unique fusion that is sure to captivate any audience. His shows are a captivating mix of original songs, reimagined classics, and rich storytelling. Join me on this episode as we explore the life, music, and stories of Henry Jones, a true torchbearer of the blues tradition. Please tune in and let Henry's music take you on a journey through time and soul, reminding us why the blues is essential to the human experience.

Blues musician Robert Lighthouse may have grown up in Sweden, but as soon as he turned 18 he came to the United States to live with a native American family on a Hopi reservation and learn about his beloved Mississippi Delta Blues. He had no idea that decades later, he'd travel to a war zone to make music for people living with daily terror. He also had no idea how profoundly that trip would affect him.
Brian interviews David Deacon. David talks about the launch of his new album Wednesday and his eclectic career: stock broker, endurance car racer, Ontario Liberal party president, general manager of Porsche Canada, CEO turnaround artist and poet, and Blues Musician. He has a voice that sounds like it could have an atomic decay number attached to it. His bluesy, old school rock/ballad storytelling spends time digging into the psyche of both someone who has travelled a lot of roads and the people who he met along the way. If you like Dire Straits or Tom Waits, maybe Leonard Cohen (if he rode motorcycles), Dylan for sure, perhaps Van Morrison, you will definitely love this. He's like them, but not like them all at the same time.

As the political divide deepens through disinformation campaigns about the election results, vaccines, 9/11, and more, it can feel like unity and consensus are shrinking on the horizon. And yet, the only way to address the pandemic or the fault lines in our democracy is if we can bridge the divide and find an enclave of common ground. Our guest today has decades of experience finding common ground and, in some cases, persuading people to change their minds about deeply held beliefs. Daryl Davis is a Blues musician by profession, but has devoted a lifetime to reaching out to KKK members and starting a dialogue. Since he began the work, he has persuaded over 200 KKK members to leave the organization. He joins us to discuss how he manages to persuade people to abandon long-held beliefs and how these tactics might help the national crisis of polarization.
Our guest is the acclaimed African-American artist Lonnie Holley, born in Alabama in 1950, who has three pieces now on view at Philbrook in that museum's "From the Limitations of Now" exhibit, which closes on September 5th. Known for his mixed-media and found-and-discarded-object art pieces, Holley is also an "experimental blues" musician who's made several albums. He will perform with his band tomorrow night (Friday the 3rd) at Philbrook's garden space, beginning at 7pm.
