English episode!

Johnny Burgin has been making waves in the U.S. and abroad as a blues player entrenched in the Chicago blues style. He has performed and recorded with blues legends like Tail Dragger, Sam Lay, Billy Boy Arnold, and Pinetop Perkins. Johnny made a name for himself in the late 90s in Chicagoland blues clubs, a record deal with Delmark, and several European tours. He plays on average more than 200 shows a year, which is why he has such an appreciation for the stage, audiences, and other blues players.   I performed with Johnny in and around Queretaro last month, the pinnacle of which was a headlining performance at the Queretablues Festival. This week I received a message from Johnny to ask what I thought about doing some shows with him in Mexico City, so to be continued (possibly).   We recorded this conversation at the end of a busy ten days here in Queretaro while enjoying cervezas Bohemia, after which we went out for local cuisine. Johnny was feeling a little off and his last morning with us here in Queretaro, I think he was just experiencing a bit of exhaustion or perhaps still acclimating to our altitude. I've since gathered he made it home feeling great. Johnny is a lot of fun to perform and hang with. He's still showing me the ropes of Chicago blues, which is an exercise in restraint from my improvisational ways. But it's also an education in nuance.   We talk about Queretaro Mexico, The Queretablues Festival, his guitar masterclass (at the Queretablues Festival), his YouTube channel, moving to Memphis, leaving Chicago, and his forthcoming album. He bears an uncanny resemblance to his father both in his looks and in his musicianship.  MUD MORGANFIELD is the eldest son of blues great Muddy Waters and he shares the same perfect blues phrasing as his dad. Mud is a bit of a late bloomer. He didn't begin a professional career in his native Chicago until after his father died in 1983 and he was nearly 30.  Born Larry Williams in 1954, Mud grew up surrounded by music, and particularly the Blues, and he's played music all his life, starting out with the drums his Dad gave him as a child, then moving on to the bass guitar. Supporting himself as a bus driver, just like his father did in the early years, Mud cut his teeth in south Chicago Blues clubs where he proved a popular draw on both the club and festival circuit. Audiences couldn't get enough of his mix of his dad's songs and original works. He says of his performances of Muddy Waters' songs that he started to sing to show the world what his dad left behind. Mud is proud to sing his father's songs and says while he's not pretending to be Muddy, when he gets up on the stage, he can feel his ‘pops' with him. Mud tells me he had to go out and get himself some blues before he could sing and play with authenticity. He recalls his childhood and the role that his dad played and explains that growing up he never realised how important and influential his father was.  Today Mud Morganfield is a mullti-award winning artist himself and an established star in the world of Blues music.  His singing is firmly rooted in the best traditions of Chicago Blues, but he is also a writer of wonderful, new, soulful songs and he is backed by some of the best musicians playing today. He is acclaimed by both critics and artists such as Buddy Guy and Jools Holland for his own musical ability, Mud Morganfield's latest Delmark album PORTRAIT is out now and receiving critical acclaim all over the world. During our chat, Mud makes it very clear that his entire career is dedicated to Muddy Waters. He credits his love for music to generational influences and is so proud that he inherited it.  For more information about Mud Morganfield head to his website https://www.mudmorganfieldblues.com/ If you'd like to get in touch with me to suggest a guest or to provide feedback or comments on any of my episodes, please jump onto my website www.abreathoffreshair.com.au and send me a message. We open with some glorious tracks from the golden age of Chicago blues, with releases by the legendary Delmark label that take us back to the middle of the twentieth century. We then travel to the future, with more US popular music about to be released. Ronni Boysen of Denmark is well known as one of the best European blues guitarists. Check out his eclectic and sophisticated approach in the musical clips he provided for this interview-- we think you'll agree that Ronni's playing is truly special. He discovered the blues at his high school library, stumbling on to a copy of Muddy Water's "Hard Again" It all came full circle as he's been backing one of Muddy Water's sons, Mud Morganfield, all over Europe since 2009. Strictly a sideman, one of Ronni's specialties is to back harmonica players; he's worked extensively with great harpmen including Lazy Lester, James Harmon, RJ Mischo, Paul Orta, Bob Corritore and Peter Nande. Since 2012, he's played with SE's The Kokomo Kings, a purist rock and roll outfit with a cult following on Rhythm Bomb records-- they were nominated for an Ameripolitan Award in 2018. During the pandemic Ronni formed an "exotica" band, Los Palmeras, which explores burlesque, Cuban r and b, and vintage instrumental styles. They'll have a recording out in the Fall of 2022. Hanna PK grew up in Korea and came to the US as an adult. She fell into the Rochester blues scene after hearing a local blues guitar hero, John Cole. She ended up sharing the stage with John and later on, blues legend Joe Beard. She'd briefly met the Baton Rouge bluesman Kenny Neal when she was competed in the 2019 IBCs, but she got a break when Kenny saw a video of her playing the 30s blues classic "Decoration Day" on her "tom thumb" piano in her U-Haul storage locker (see link below). He offered to produce her at his studio in Baton Rouge, LA, and the result is "Blues All Over My Shoes", a joint production of Kenny's label, Booga records, and Vizztone Label Group. For twenty two years The Headcutters have been building their own blues scene in and around the sunny beach town of Itajaí in the state of Santa Catarina. They looked and sounded quite incongruous in their suits, with their vintage amps and guitars, singing 50s Chicago Blues music in English-- but they persevered and by the end of the show everyone loved them. Along the way they have toured in Argentina, all across Brazil and even came to the US-- I loved their tour movie "Walkin' in USA" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aKEf...). They have backed great blues artists such as Billy Branch, Kim Wilson, Mud Morganfield, Eddie C Campbell, James Wheeler, Wallace Coleman, Omar Coleman, and bassist Bob Stroger, with whom they appear on the upcoming Delmark CD "That's My Name". Just don't call Joe Marhoffer and Ricardo Maca of The Headcutters bluesmen! In Joe's words "we are just four white guys from Brazil, and we could never call ourselves a bluesman-- that belongs to the African American greats who are the owners of this music.." Prakash Slim grew up in poverty outside the town of Lalitpur, Nepal. Drawn to music since childhood, he traded a bicycle for a guitar and threw himself into learning and listening to blues and blues rock. By his early twenties he was in a blues, rock and instrumental band as well as working as a guitar instructor. An invitation to the Walden School of Music in San Francisco was a big break for Prakash, but then came the devastating Nepal earthquake of 2015. Work as a musician in Nepal was impossible during the earthquake aftermath, and to make matters worse, in 2017 Prakash fell seriously ill. During his convalescence he happened to scroll across the facebook group "Acoustic Guitar Pickers", and he completely changed musical directions; developing an obsession with Robert Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and many of the other pre-war blues greats. They provided Prakash Slim both solace and as a way to continue his musical career. Although it is difficult for many to travel outside of Nepal, Prakash has connected with the online blues world in a big way! In recent years, he's garnered an impressive amount streaming/radio play, blues press coverage and great reviews of his music. His goal is to tour in America, Europe and South America-- his first destination? The Crossroads in Clarksdale MS, of course! Check out Prakash's original tunes "Living In Memory", and one sung in his native language "Corona Blues"-- he performs both in this video. Adam Sikora is a Polish harmonica player who completely by chance became obsessed with the pre-war harmonica styles of Sonny Terry, Johnny Woods and Billy Bizor. Luis (Gigi) de Cicco is an eclectic multi-instrumentalist from Benevento, Italy, who, like Adam, found a home in the thriving Berlin arts scene. Capo, acoustic guitar and fingerpicks in hand, Gigi has found his own blues groove by delving deep into the styles of Mississippi Fred McDowell, RL Burnside and other Hill Country masters. Adam and Gigi formed the duo Juke Joint Smokers in Berlin and started to record an electric record together, but decided to go acoustic. They have a great blues feel and mood and we look forward to their first recording. We also recommend their other bands; Adam's the leader of The Soul Thrivers, a collaboration with a Jamaican/UK based singer Dvora Davis and American/French guitarist Nick Morrison. Gig's band Caboose is an ambitious psychedelic/African/rock/blues gumbo that competed in the IBC in 2019. By the way, neither of these bands have a bass-- they both go for a raw, stripped down sound in their own way. This is an inspired duo and both Adam and Gigi are players to watch. LITTLE HAT is not a person, it's a band from The Netherlands that plays a their own furious and raw version of blues and early rock 'n' roll. Like kindred spirits Jesus on a Tortilla from Milan (see No Border Blues #3), they are inspired by the deep cuts of obscure blues pioneers such as Joe Hill Louis and Sunnyland Slim, but play with a heaping dose of frantic energy. Little Hat employs the rare trio instrumentation of harmonica /vocals (Machiel Meijers), guitar (Willem van Dullemen) and drums (Paolo de Stitger). Little Hat is also intergenerational: Paolo's in his 20s, Machiel's not yet 40, and Willem recently turned 70! Machiel and Willem were in the long-running and popular Dutch blues band Stackhouse, but they are finding a new freedom with the "three-man-one-man-band" approach of Little Hat. Sometimes it sounds to me like Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers with harmonica! Little Victor, who we've interviewed in Episode 14, produced Little Hat's latest CD "Wine, Whiskey and Wimmen" for the German label Rhythm Bomb Records. The purity of their vintage tones together with the forceful sonic attack of the recording proves this to be a fruitful pairing. Little Victor was raised in Italy and Memphis and was dubbed "The Beale Street Blues Bopper" by his cousin-- the avant garde-blues filmmaker, producer and performer Tav Falco. While in Memphis, his uncle, noted blues writer David Evans and family friend Alex Chilton also encouraged the young Victor, who was already playing harp and singing, to pick up the guitar. He was soon performing weekly on Beale Street with Uncle Ben Perry. With influences such as these it's no wonder Little Victor is deeply rooted in traditional blues sounds, but also has a fiercely independent artistic sense of purpose. He's made several of his own records for Wild Records, El Toro records, and Germany's Rhythm Bomb records, and his most recent effort, "Deluxe Lo-Fi" features Kim Wilson, Carl Sonny Leyland, Big John Atkinson, Willie Buck, and Tomi Leino and Jo Buddy from Finland. Victor is probably best known for his long and successful association with Louisiana Red and the significant crossover success of their "Back to the Black Bayou", on Ruf Records. They worked closely together until Red's passing in 2012-- check out Victor's emotional performance in this video of his original "The Death of Louisiana Red". In the last several years, Victor has used his strong musical vision to produce artists such as The Jelly Roll Men (see NBB Episode 7), Shakedown Tim (see NBB episode 11), Sophie Kay of Paris, Harpdog Brown of Canada, Mo Al Jazz of France, Little Hat of the Netherlands and many others. Jason Stein is among the mere handful of improvisers who play the bass clarinet exclusively. Stein leads the acclaimed trio Locksmith Isidore as well as his quartet. He contributes to several of the leading bands on Chicago’s new-music scene and has brought a vital voice to the freest of free-jazz shows. Stein’s playing showcases an extraordinary expertise on the bass clarinet, which ranges from powerful post-bop lines to ear-grabbing wails in the altissimo range. Chicago writer Neil Tesser notes that “Stein’s playing has a rawboned swagger particular to Chicago jazz in all its manifestations – from the trad playing of Bud Freeman and Jimmy McPartland in the 20s, through the tenor titans of the 50s, through the adventurers who formed the AACM in the 60s, and right up to the city’s renowned modern cadre of new-music improvisers.” Stein moved to Chicago in 2005 and has since recorded for such labels as Leo, Delmark, Not Two, Atavistic, 482 Music, Clean Feed, Astral Spirits, Sunnyside, Ears, and Eyes, and Northern Spy. Stein has performed throughout the US and Europe as both a bandleader and sideman and has amassed a discography of over 40 albums. You can also find more Richard Listens content on Instagram (@RichardListens), Facebook (@Richard Listens), and RichardListens.com. Blues in Chicago with Dave Katzman and an interview with vocalist Petra Van Nuis and guitarist Andy Brown.   About Andy Brown   Andy Brown is a guitarist based in Chicago. Born in New York in 1975, he has played professionally for over twenty five years. He has had a varied performing career that has included stints in Cincinnati and New York City. Since coming to Chicago in 2003, Andy has been fortunate to work at many of the area's finest jazz venues with his own bands, as well as playing his unique brand of solo jazz guitar. He has backed visiting jazz names at places including The Jazz Showcase, Ravinia and the Harris Theater. Currently he plays solo guitar every Thursday at The Green Mill, leads his quartet every Wednesday at Andy's Jazz Club and performs with his trio bi-weekly at Winter’s Jazz Club. As a sideman he has performed with internationally know jazz musicians including Scott Hamilton, Howard Alden, Harry Allen, Warren Vaché, Ken Peplowski, Hod O’Brien, Rebecca Kilgore, Judy Carmichael, John Pisano, Michael Feinstein, Anat Cohen, Kurt Elling and many others. He has also worked with many names on the Chicago jazz scene including Russ Phillips, Don Stiernberg, Chris Foreman, Eric Schneider, Bobby Lewis and Judy Roberts. His love of great tunes, as well as accompanying skills have made him a favorite with vocalists. Married to frequent partner vocalist Petra van Nuis, Andy has worked with many of Chicago's finest singers. Andy also had the good fortune to accompany Barbra Streisand when she appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009. Andy has made many festival and club appearances around the world. Highlights include Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Chautauqua Jazz Party, the Chicago Jazz Festival, the Cleveland Classic Jazz Party, as well as festivals in Rio de Janeiro, the Netherlands, Germany and throughout the United States. Andy has provided the music for a wide variety of parties and private events. In 2012, his trio was invited by the Chicago Mayor's office to perform for the Nobel Peace Prize dinner in Chicago where invited guests included U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, as well as the Dalai Lama and Mikhail Gorbachev. Also in 2012, Andy's trio was hired by the U.S. State Department to provide music for the opening night gala at the NATO summit held in Chicago. Andy enjoys being a member of several bands besides his own. He works often with vocalist Petra van Nuis, either in duo or larger groups, including Petra's Recession Seven. They have worked together all over Chicago and in venues throughout the country, as well as tours of Europe and Canada. Since 2009, Andy has co-led a two-guitar quartet with renowned guitarist Howard Alden. In 2013, Delmark Records released a CD of the group entitled "Heavy Artillery" which received four stars in Downbeat magazine and was featured in their annual Albums Of The Year issue. Andy plays regularly with jazz mandolinist Don Stiernberg's trio. They have worked at festivals in Germany and Brazil, as well as throughout the United States. He is also a member of trombonist Russ Phillips' group, both with Russ' Quartet and his Windy City All-Stars. Andy has been featured on a wide array of recordings. As a leader, his latest is the 2016 Delmark Records release “Direct Call” which received four stars in Downbeat magazine. His previous Delmark release “Soloist” was his first solo jazz guitar recording and received warm reviews from critics and fans alike. 2015 marked the release of organist Chris Foreman's debut recording "Now Is The Time” which featured Andy on several cuts. In 2016, mandolinist Don Stiernberg released a CD titled “Good Numbers” featuring Andy on acoustic archtop guitar. Andy has collaborated on four CDs with Petra van Nuis, the most recent being their 2017 duet release “Lessons Lyrical." Andy had the good fortune to learn directly from several guitar masters, including Cal Collins, Ted Greene, and Howard Alden. His most important mentor was the late Kenny Poole, who called Andy his protégé.   About Petra   Petra van Nuis (pronounced Pay-tra van Nouse) is a Chicago-based jazz vocalist who has been described in Downbeat Magazine as having "a light, gorgeous, and fairly delicate voice...a gift for melody and plenty of rhythmic confidence." A Chicagoan since 2003, Petra sings at all the finest jazz venues in town including the Jazz Showcase, the Green Mill, Andy's Jazz Club, Winter's, Fitzgerald's, the City Winery, and the Old Town School of Folk Music. Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs has presented Petra's groups at the Chicago Cultural Center and Chicago Summer Dance. The Jazz Institute of Chicago has featured Petra's Recession Seven band at the Chicago Jazz Festival and Jazz City. Petra has been interviewed and her music featured on Chicago's WGN for Rick Kogan's "After Hours" show and on WBEZ's "Morning Shift" with Tony Sarabia. Outside of Chicago, Petra plays at jazz festivals such as the Cleveland Classic Jazz Party, the Roswell Jazz Festival and Joe Boughton's Chautauqua Jazz Party with such renowned musicians as Dan Barrett, Nicki Parrott, Ken Peplowski, John Di Martino, Dan Block, Scott Robinson, Frank Tate, Hal Smith, Rossano Sportiello, and Duke Heitger. Petra's latest project, Because We're Night People, is a live recording of night-themed standards which was awarded 4 stars by DownBeat Magazine and included in their "Top Rated Albums of 2019" listing. Revered Chicago pianist Dennis Luxion blends his signature impressionistic harmony with Petra's lush vocals. This CD was re-issued in Japan on the Japanese label Muzak in October 2018 and was used as in-flight music on All Nippon Airways (Japan's largest airline) in January/February 2019. Germany's Jazzpodium Magazine hails Petra's seventeen year musical collaboration with her husband, guitarist Andy Brown, as "a magical musical dialogue, which can only partially be described as blind understanding." Petra and Andy's romantic style has been enjoyed in intimate club settings around the country including Shanghai Jazz (Madison, NJ), the Kerrytown Concert House (Ann Arbor, MI), Night Town (Cleveland,OH), the Saugatuck Center for the Arts (Saugatuck, MI), and the Blue Wisp Jazz Club (Cincinnati, OH). Several European tours have brought the duo to Germany (Traditional Jazz Hall Stuttgart, Jazzhaus Heidelberg, Mampf Frankfurt, Le Pirate, Jazz Club Neustadt, Jazz Club 77, Musikhaus Birlkehof) to the Netherland's (Gorinchem Jazz Festival, Culuurschip Thor, Jazz Hall 72, Stichting Jazz Zevenbergen) and to Belgium (Jazz Cafe Hopper). With the re-release of the duo's 2017 CD Lessons Lyrical and their 2009 CD Far Away Places on Japan's Muzak label, Petra and Andy continue to spread their swinging sounds far and wide. Petra and Andy often augment their duo with bass and drums forming the Petra van Nuis/ Andy Brown Quartet. In addition to Chicago performances, the quartet frequently tours the Midwest having played for the West Michigan Jazz Society (Grand Rapids, MI), Polyrhytms (Davenport,IA), the Firefly Jazz Club (Ann Arbor, MI), the Wilson Center for the Arts (Milwaukee, WI), the Detroit Institute for the Arts (Detroit, MI), and headlined the 32nd Michelob Women In Jazz Festival (Dayton, OH). At the start of the Great Recession in September 2008, Petra's Recession Seven, a Chicago-style early swing/trad jazz band was born at Chicago's legendary Green Mill. This seven piece ensemble features an all-star line up of internationally known Chicago veterans including trombonist Russ Phillips, reed man Eric Schneider, and trumpeter Bob Ojeda. Festival appearances include the 32nd Elkhart Jazz Festival, 33rd annual Chicago Jazz Festival, the 34th, 35th, 37th, 40th and 42nd annual Cedar Basin Jazz Festival, Fitzgerald's 29th annual American Music Festival, the Juvae Jazz Society's 25th anniversary Festival, and the Illiana Club of Traditional Jazz's 40th anniversary Jazz Festival. The band regularly travels to regional jazz societies such as the Madison Jazz Society, the Starr-Gennett Foundation, the "Masters of Swing" series at Cincinnati's Xavier University, the Lafayette Jazz Club, and the Indianapolis Jazz Club. The American Rag, in a review of the band's 2011 on location recording Live In Chicago praises "a killer of a band that grabs your attention and doesn't give it back until they are finished playing." You may have heard selections from Petra's 2006 debut CD A Sweet Refrain on digital cable's Music Choice, where it regularly rotates on the "Singers & Swing" channel. In a review, Los Angeles Jazz Scene critic Scott Yanow notes "a sweet voice, a straightforward delivery....one hears touches of Billie Holiday, Blossom Dearie, and Mildred Bailey in her phrasing, but not in the sound of her voice which is distinctive." This CD is a throwback to the classic vocal recordings of the 50's with a blend of duo, quartet, quintet, and tight two-horn sextet arrangements by bassist/arranger Joe Policastro. In 2012, these arrangements were recreated with the teaming of Petra and Andy with four Canadian musicians at Edmonton's famed Yardbird Suite. In 2015, two songs from this CD were selected by famed Japanese jazz writer/historian/record producer Yasukuni Terashima to be included in the compilation CD For Jazz Vocal Fans Only on the Japanese label Disk Union. Petra continues to play with Chicago's finest instrumentalists including Bobby Lewis, Art Davis, Kim Cusack, Larry Harris, Greg Fishman, Chris White, Joe Adamik, Joe Policastro, Bob Rummage, Andy Schumm, Jeremy Kahn, Judy Roberts, Phil Gratteau, Don Stille, Dan Delorenzo, Tom Bartlett, Mike Schlick, Bill Overton, Bradley Williams, Ron Dewar, John Otto, Stewart Miller, and Don Stiernberg.

On ne peut s'empêcher d'éprouver un peu de condescendance mâtinée de jalousie envers les peuples qui n'ont pas tranché avec la royauté. During the 70’s while performing with Willie Dixon and Koko Taylor, he was hailed as a prodigy and touted as the future of blues in Chicago; but his personal battles with depression and substance abuse threatened to derail his career. Nicole Mitchell, flutist, composer and bandleader is our guest on today's show. . Around 2001, Ms. Mitchell began to receive notice for her work around Chicago, quickly releasing a flurry of releases on the Delmark, RougeArt nad Firehouse 12 labels, all capturing her spirited flute and her deep well of memorable compositions. Her reputation began to stretch out to Europe and worldwide collecting accolades and commissions and fronting groups like The Black Earth Ensemble, The Black Earth Strings, Ice Crystal and Sonic Projections. In 2009, she became the first female President of the AACM, the legendary Chicago-born collective whose initials stand for The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and has been home to many of the greatest jazz musicians of the last fifty years. Ms Mitchell has been a Downbeat poll winner, was the Chicago Tribune's 2006 "Person of the Year," and in recent years has left her home in Chicago to live and teach in California at UC Irvine. If musically Mitchell wears her passions on her sleeve, she did in conversation too, easily discussing family dearths, the racism and other obstacles she has faced as well as her worries and fears. But she also laughs easily and often. We talked about musicians Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy and her teacher Jimmie Cheatem as well as The Hunger Games, the travails of being an adjunct professor, jazz in Chicago, dwindling student diversity, the writings of sci-fi author Octavia Butler and more.

WILLIE BUCK special guest. Buck has been leading notable bands in Chicago for over 50 years. He arrived on the scene during the 50’s in the midst of the Chicago blues heyday-after a short period of singing as a teenager in the south on the Chitin Circuit. He quickly became a force on Maxwell Street singing with Dave & Louis Myers, Little Mack Simmons, Fred Below and Big Moose Walker who he would later record his first full length album with. His earlier LP singles are often sought out by collectors, they include how can “I be Nice to you,” “I Want my Baby” and the “Disco Blues.” For many years Willie was operating his own tow truck business and singing on the weekends but during his recent resurgence he has recorded an album for Delmark with the Rockin’ Johnny band and an album in Europe with JL Pardo. His singing style is simple, powerful and channels the spirit of Muddy Waters who is his primary influence. Many of today’s blues stars credit Willie for helping to give them a start in the blues. Willie had a small part in the movie Hoop Dreams and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2004.
