Tony Braunagel, Terry Wilson & Snuffy Walden Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson What do you get when you Zoom with three amigos from Texas who go back over 50 years? A whole lot of fun, rock stories galore, and a ton of love. The Grammy, Emmy, BMI, and Blues Award Winning trio of Snuffy Walden, Tony Braunagel, and Terry Wilson took us back to the 60s in Houston, playing at the Cellar, a strip club in Houston, Tony and Terry off with Johnny Nash and Snuffy off with Stray Dog to open for Emerson, Lake and Palmer. They all ended up in London, there was Rabbit, Paul Kossoff, Free, Back Street Crawler, Pete Townshend, and Eric Burdon for all of them, at least twice. Some great war stories along the way… there was Michael Ruff, some crashed cars and trashed hotel rooms. Tony took us through his time with Rickie Lee Jones, Bonnie Raitt, and The Blues Brothers backup band, leading to be an actor and musician on According to Jim. Snuffy getting Chaka Khan, Donna Summers and then segueing to TV, Thirty Something and The Wonder Years, his first foray in––both Emmy-winning shows that year, leading to the West Wing and his own Emmy. Terry partnering with Teresa James in music and in life, their Grammy nod, his song-writing, producing through his latest for Back Street Crawler's Terry Slesser which reunited him with Tony and Terry. They've shared many stages and sessions over the years, but it's their rock-solid friendship borne in decades-long history that sweetens their song. What a joy to be in their joy. A great time was had by all. Lucky me and you to be a fly on that wall. Tony Braunagel Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson What a long great trip it's been. Grammy and Blues Music Award Winner, Tony Braunagel, took us through his early days in Houston, playing nightclubs at 15 with soul bands, to connecting with a certain Snuffy Walden and Terry Wilson a few years later, playing together on and off over the next 50 + years, including next Wednesday at The Write Off Room with the amazing Teresa James. Tony told great stories about Johnny Nash, London, Rabbit, Bob Marley, New York, Ahmet Ertegun, Paul Kossoff, Back Street Crawler, opening for Foreigner, Kansas, and Robin Trower, LA, Eric Burdon, thrice over the years, including producing three of his albums, Michael Ruff, Katy Segal, Rickie Lee Jones, Bette Midler, Etta James, 8 years with Bonnie Raitt when she rose to superstardom, Buddy Guy, Keb Mo, The Blues Brothers, he's still doing those gigs, 8 years on According to Jim as a player and an actor, Taj Mahal with whom he still plays in the Phantom Blues Band, winning that Grammy, Lyle Lovett, Robert Cray, producing dozens of artists including the before mentioned Taj. Tony's got at least a half dozen projects currently on his plate, in addition to playing with as many bands. Busy, busy man. Lucky, lucky us. Love this crazy talented man behind a drum kit, on a mixing board, a Zoom screen, or hanging in life. Always a treat. As is his girlfriend Stephanie's, Delassa… yummy, healthy chocolate. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Teresa JamesTeresa James and the Rhythm Tramps are on quite a roll. Her persuasive pipes slathered in honey and soaked in Texas-bred sass, keyboardist Teresa James and her band, the Rhythm Tramps, have long reigned as one of Los Angeles' leading contemporary blues outfits, even though their uncommonly imaginative repertoire, much of it supplied by Terry Wilson, James' husband, producer, and bassist, is by no means strictly limited to the 12-bar form.  Their 2019 CD Here in Babylon was nominated for a Grammy in the Contemporary Blues Album category.

Teresa James & Terry Wilson Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson They may sing the blues but they sure make me happy. Grammy nominees Teresa James and Terry Wilson treated us to our first live mini-concert in Game Changers history. And it was spectacular! With their brand new album of reimagined Beatle songs, With a Little Help From Her Friends, which debuted at #9 on the Billboard Blues chart at the fore, the last third of the show was devoted to cuts from said album, and one of my favorites of theirs, Don't Make A Habit of It. Joining them was longtime Rhythm Tramps guitarist Billy Watts (Eric Burdon, John Mayall), and drummer, Richard Millsap (currently touring with John Fogerty). Special thanks to Louie Kovic for making it happen. Celebrating Teresa's nomination for Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year, from The Blues Foundation, we talked their early years in Texas, separately and eventually together. Terry, who goes back with my beau, 50+ years, then London calling and forming Back Street Crawler with Paul Kosoff (Free) and John Bundrick (The Who), to playing with Eric Burdon, which Teresa eventually did as well. There were lots of bands, sessions, and tours for both, with parenting taking precedence for a number of years, limiting Teresa's roading for a spell. She recorded with Eric Burdon, Spencer Davis, Tommy Castro, Stephen Bruton, Randy Newman, Neil Diamond, and many others and performed with Levon Helm, Lloyd Jones, Delbert McClinton, and Eric Burdon & the Animals to mention just a few, and did many before-mentioned sessions. A gifted and proficient songwriter, composer, producer, and bassist, Terry never stops working and creating. Numerous albums for different artists are currently in the works and another upcoming kick-ass studio album with Teresa and the Rhythm Tramps will drop in September. Teresa James and The Rhythm Tramps play regularly in LA. For upcoming shows, music, and access to all things James/Wilson visit TeresaJames.com These folks are the real deal. The music, the songs, that voice. WOW! I could listen to them all day. And many days, I do! Dean Parks Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson Dean Parks has played with everyone on every album ever recorded. Close. His discography is so long I had to take rest breaks as I was scrolling. How many did we get to? Well, we polished some of the gemstones. A 5-year-old with a steel guitar, he was playing with the big boys at 6. Clarinet followed, and saxophone, which he still plays brilliantly, before focusing on guitar, where he is lord and master of the sessions. Starting with Sonny and Cher, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder's Innervisions (in my top 10 of all time), Songs in the Key of Life, spectacular memories there, meeting Snuffy Walden and the years of work he did with him, Jimmy Webb, Dolly Parton, Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, The Jackson Five, great fun there, Crosby, Stills and Nash, then Crosby and Nash, then Croz, having just rehearsed for an upcoming tour before his passing. Lovely feelings recounted. Touring with James Taylor, as his hands when he broke his, and the challenges of that. Lyle Lovett, and the wonderfulness there, Teresa James, Herbie Hancock, The Fabelmans… the man hasn't stopped since he started, nor has he ever had to choose even a temporary alternative to his talent and his passion. With no end in sight, if you're in LA you can catch him live at The Baked Potato. If not, just turn on your radio––songs past, present and no doubt well into the future will be featuring the skilled, soulful, spectacular virtuosity that is Dean Parks. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Teresa James of Teresa James and the Rhythm TrampsHer persuasive pipes slathered in honey and soaked in Texas-bred sass, keyboardist Teresa James and her band, the Rhythm Tramps, have long reigned as one of Los Angeles' leading contemporary blues outfits, even though their uncommonly imaginative repertoire, much of it supplied by Terry Wilson, James' husband, producer, and bassist, is by no means strictly limited to the 12-bar form.  Their 2019 CD Here in Babylon was nominated for a Grammy in the Contemporary Blues Album category.

This weeks guest: Teresa James & Terry Wilson Hello and welcome to Call & Response: A Blues Podcast! I'm your host Ben Forrester. Over the years as a professional guitarist, I have had the opportunity to make music with some very cool musicians from all all over the world. In this podcast I'll be interviewing Musicians and Artists that are not only my friends, but my colleagues on the stage and in the studio. With my guests I'll discuss everything about blues music itself and music that has stemmed from it. I also want to chat with my guests about their music, their influences and inspirations, their career in music, and hopefully some behind the scenes stories and memories of life on the road, and in the studio. And at the end of each episode I'll feature a song from my guest. I'll be recording and releasing plenty of blues filled episodes, so please follow and subscribe on your favorite podcast platform to Call & Response: A Blues Podcast for notifications on when new shows are released. It's the first holiday edition of The Roadhouse for 2016. With a holiday track in every set, I've also got Sugar Ray & The Bluetones, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Leavell, Rory Block, and Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps in an hour that contains a set focused on the great Bukka White and, all around, has a great mix of new music and old. With an ad-free version for everyone, I do believe it'll be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
