New Orleans has given the world all kinds of music. We refer to ourselves as the birthplace of jazz. We’re one of the principal breeding grounds of funk, bounce, and brass band music. And then there’s a style of piano playing that’s so identifiably from here it’s simply called, “New Orleans piano.” Generations of legendary New Orleans piano players became identified with the places they played. Fats Domino at the Dew Drop Inn. Professor Longhair at Tipitina’s. James Booker at The Maple Leaf. Today you can hear masters of New Orleans piano like Jon Cleary, Tom McDermott, Joe Krown, and others at clubs around town, like Chickie Wah Wah, The Bon Temps, and Buffa’s. Or, you can hear them at your place. You can have an A-list New Orleans piano player show up at your place - with a grand piano - and play your birthday party, wedding, or just a random Friday night, thanks to Jacques Ferland’s business, Piano On A Truck. Piano On A Truck is pretty much what it sounds like. It’s a grand piano on the back of a yellow, 1972 International pick-up truck. And it comes with, or without, a piano player. In our seemingly never-ending attempt to place order on a chaotic world, we like to categorize things into twos - either/or. Tall or short. Black or white. On the rocks or straight up. Today, for a lot of white-collar occupations, the either/or distinction is either working in the office or working from home. Well, like so many things in life, it turns out there’s a 3rd way. Billy Schell describes himself as CEO, owner and van driver of an apparel company called NOLA Shirts. NOLA Shirts designs and manufactures New Orleans themed Polo shirts, T-shirts, and hats, and sells them online or at various brick-and-mortar stores around New Orleans. The “van driver” in Billy’s job description is a reference to the company’s headquarters which are also Billy’s living quarters – a Mercedes Sprinter van that’s been his principal home and office since 2021. Around 5,525 years ago - it was probably a Thursday - in ancient Mesopotamia, the wheel was invented. To say it was a revolutionary invention is not just a bad pun, it’s also the understatement of several millennia. And just when you think every possible use of the wheel has already been thought of, along comes the 21st Century - and hashtag-van-life and Piano On A Truck, two New Orleans entrepreneurs discovering yet more places the revolutions of a wheel can take us. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. For this episode we're joined by a living musical legend whose career as an A&R man, manager, producer, label-owner and writer spans over 60 extraordinary years. On the day his monumental "journey through Global Music" And the Roots of Rhythm Remain is published, the peerless Joe Boyd visits RBP's Hammersmith HQ to talk about the book — and the 17+ years it took to write the follow-up to 2006's acclaimed memoir White Bicycles. After we hear about the 1987 meeting that led to the adoption of the now-discredited term "World Music" as a marketing category, discussion touches on the sound, rhythms and political impact of music from South Africa, Brazil, Bulgaria and — inevitably — Jamaica. Clips from John Hutchinson's 1982 audio interview with the late great Kate McGarrigle – mother of Rufus and Martha Wainwright — lead to our guest's recollections of working with her and sister Anna on their magical eponymous debut in 1975. Joe also reminisces about Junco Partner, the 1976 album he made with New Orleans piano genius James Booker. Talk of the week's featured RBP writer Robert Shelton — coinciding with the imminent reissue of the latter's epic Bob Dylan biography No Direction Home — prompts memories of the late New York Times critic from Joe, who (lest we forget) worked as stage manager at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival in which Dylan first "went electric". Many thanks to special guest Joe Boyd. And the Roots of Rhythm Remain is published by Faber in the UK and Ze Books in the US; visit Joe's website joeboyd.co.uk for more details. Pieces discussed: Joe Boyd: Freaky Galahad, Joe Boyd: An Interview, Joe Boyd on White Bicycles, Kate McGarrigle audio, Bob Dylan at Gerde's Folk City, New York, Pop Singers and Song Writers Racing Down Bob Dylan's Road and Bob Dylan: How does it feel on your own?.

For Ben Folds, coming back on the scene with a new studio album feels like a breeze, literally:“I Feel like the expectations are lowered but I have the wind on my back”.In June 2023 Ben releases What Matters Most, his fifth studio album and his first in over six years, almost an ice age in today's breathless music biz. But part of the reason and the joy it has taken him so damn long to make, is a focus on the craft that is part of Folds' raison d'être as a musician some three decades into a professional career.“I have carried a tradition of craft, that is not easily come by, in an era when it was always going away, until now” It might sound cocky to say that this is a lesson in songwriting but I dunno, it is.”This is coming from someone who in the past decade has committed part of his career to promoting and campaigning for better music education. Come to think of it, a conversation with Ben Folds is a music education class in itself. His role as music scholar and teacher is now part of his legacy but his contribution to music is easily underestimated. For starters he sandblasted a music scene that in the mid-90s was dominated by grunge, Britpop and pretty soulless boy & girl band pop. And he did it with a fucking piano. Aided and abetted of course by belting bass (Robert Sledge) and drums (Darren Jessee) combo that made up Ben Folds Five - a refreshingly guitar-free rock band. After the trio disbanded following the usual music industry roller coaster ride (a familiar story beautifully told in Fold's 2019 book A Dream About Lightning Bugs) Folds went solo - sometimes quite literally. He made ‘sustainable touring' a thing, by going on the road with himself and a piano. That's something now essential for bands in the mid-tier - the so called “working class musician” - to tour with a minimalist set up. Fold's truly took to it - improvising and bantering with the audience - even creating a song (Bitches Ain't Shit) that became a sort of regrettable classic. He found the experience scary but took his inspiration from James Booker. “I was playing standing places - rock venues. I was shaking in my boots the first time I went out on tour like that, but I felt the need to do it”.Folds is a pioneering independent artist. He called the creative shots even when first signed to a major label imprint with Ben Folds Five. He paid for vinyl masters to some of his albums knowing full well it would come out of his royalty account. He was an early adopter of the direct to fan model with his Patreon site, recently expanded to include a private Discord channel. It's very much the modern fan-centred business model for up & coming artists these days. Through it all, Folds is one of those artists that can always rely on the ability to write a song. It's something that has seen him through the thick & thin years as he transitioned from a band to a solo career and then later as he expanded into soundtracks and orchestral works. That songcraft is firmly intact on What Matters Most on songs such as Back To Anonymous, Winslow Gardens and Kristine From the 7th Grade. But Folds can strategize the biz side too these days, and his plan is to make this new album an event. “I know we're making movies in a way when we make records but I wanted to make a record that you could date on all counts. The event is powerful, because you are either expressing an ideal, a design - or you are expressing an event”. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

In this episode we invite former Creem editor and Newsday critic Wayne Robins to reminisce about his journalistic journey from the Berkeley Barb to NYU's graduate school of journalism — and to hold forth on his (and our) beloved Steely Dan.Wayne recalls the suburban East Coast childhood he had in common with the Dan's Donald Fagen— and the music that set them both free from it. Jumping forward to 1969, he describes the Rolling Stones show he saw in Oakland a month before Altamont. He also paints a vivid and amusing picture of Bard College, the upstate New York institution he attended at the same time as Fagen and Dan co-founder Walter Becker. Clips from RBP audio interviews with the duo and original Dan member Denny Dias accompany an in-depth discussion of every rock egghead's favourite group, not to mention Fagen's 40-year-old solo album The Nightfly. The episode concludes with a swift survey of recent additions to the RBP library, including pieces about Juliette Gréco (1961), James Booker (1976), Mark E. This week, we have a very special episode featuring not one but two wonderful guests. First up, we have the return of the talented Los Angeles-based writer and a Senior Vice President at The Black List, Kate Hagen.Having bonded last year over our affection for the career of actor James Spader whom we did two podcast episodes about (one here on Watch With Jen & one on Screen Drafts), Kate joined me once again on this show a few months back for a rich, soulful, wide-ranging conversation with one of our favorite filmmakers - the wondrous Allison Anders.Later that night, we hatched an idea for our next podcast conversation where we looked forward to learning and seeking inspiration from talented women by inviting Allison's wildly gifted daughter Tiffany Anders to come and talk to us and all of you about her stellar career and a trio of her favorite obscure music documentaries as well.A Los Angeles native who was recently selected by Variety as one of the Music Supervisors to Watch in 2022, in addition to her outstanding work in the field on acclaimed TV shows such as Reservation Dogs, You're the Worst, Pen15, The Chair, Sorry for Your Loss, she's been the music supervisor on films such as To the Stars, Rust Creek, The Circle, and The End of the Tour. Having also worked as a musician, journalist, Radio DJ, plus a co-founder/co-head curator of LA's Don't Knock the Rock Film Festival, Tiffany's critically lauded debut album as a singer-songwriter, "Funny Cry Happy Gift" was produced by the legendary PJ Harvey as well.Taking you behind the scenes of her incredible life and career, in this candid, fascinating conversation, Tiffany shares her thoughts on the music business and also introduces and educates us about the obscure music documentaries Scott Walker: 30 Century Man (2006), Bayou Maharajah: The Tragic Genius of James Booker (2013), and Syl Johnson: Any Way The Wind Blows (2015) and their subjects as well.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveLogo: KateGabrielle.comPatreon Link: https://www.patreon.com/posts/68064737

That happend in 1960 during Mansura's Centennial celebration when over 10,000 people converged on Mansura. From that weekend on, Mansura has been known as the Cochon de Lait Festival of the world. After celebrating for 12 years straight and a record crowd of 100,000 in 1972, the town of Mansura took a little break. That all changed in 1987 when the Cochon de Lait festival was revived and Mansura has been never been the same again. We continue the tradition again this year. The Mansura Chamber of Commerce invites you to come pass a good time and join us for the 46th annual Cochon de Lait Festival! Postcards from Louisiana. Lauren Sturm sings and plays piano. Anti-racism educator and author Tim Wise joins me for this iteration of Our Social Landscape. Author of 9 books on race, and a prolific public speaker and blogger, Tim began his activism as a student at Tulane in the late 1980s and has been involved in the struggle for racial equality and social justice ever since. The conversation starts with a discussion of how he began activism work against South African apartheid and neo-Nazi politician David Duke. We then touch on civil unrest, particularly in the wake of the 1-year anniversary of the January 6th, 2021, insurrection, before moving onto the intersection between race and social class in America. Next comes a discussion of Critical Race Theory, plus the role of racism, individualism, and animosity towards the public good, that has impacted the current Covid-19 pandemic. We conclude with some suggestions moving forward, and Tim finishes with a quick discussion of how he keeps his eyes on the prize, even if the prize continues to appear unreachable. More information about Tim Wise and his work can be found here: https://timjwise.medium.com/ http://www.timwise.org/ The podcast features a live version of “True” by the late New Orleans piano legend James Booker. As broadcast January 7, 2022 with plenty of extra Joan & Tone for your podcast spirits. Tonight for our first guest artist selector show of the new year, we couldn't be more thrilled to have welcomed Joan As Police Woman to the show to discuss the creative process that went into her latest album with Tony Allen and Dave Okumu. A surprising one night jam session in Paris in 2019 bloomed into the glimmering, brooding flower that is The Solution Is Restless, one of our favorite albums of the year. Joan talked quite specifically about what moved her to create some of the tunes on the LP, and also how she met the late, great father of afrobeat and kind of "took a chance" asking if he'd like to record with her. Not to be missed for fans of the artist or the album.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Take Me To Your LeaderGhost Funk Orchestra – Fuzzy LogicOrions Belte – Cherchez La GhostThe Rebels of Tijuana – Et le blizzard s'estompeLeenalchi – Ultimate PrescriptionPart II (30:36)Robert Glasper – So Beautiful (Live at Capitol Studios)James Booker – Black Minute WaltzJ Dilla – Waves Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – MasqueraderTony Allen – Politely Part III (60:43)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Geometry Of YouTony Allen feat Damon Albarn – Go BackKrystle Warren & The Faculty – If It Wasn't For The LakeBaths – Lovely BloodflowMeshell Ndegeocello – Forget My NameHere We Go Magic – Over The Ocean Part IV (99:55)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Get My BearingsTony Allen feat Theo Parrish, ESKA, & Andrew Ashong – Day Like This ReworkBridget Kearney – Who Are We KiddingThe Flamingos – I Only Have Eyes For YouConnan Mockasin – Momo'sMadlib – The StrollSly & The Family Stone – Skin I'm In
A month has passed & we successfully refrained from exploring new music of any kind...but what did we learn? In our quest to complete the infinite collection, we often found ourselves moving on to the next thing prematurely. Diving into the archives gave us a reboot of sorts & brought previous discoveries back to the forefront.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/SchizoMusic)

Although he grew up in a small town just south of London, England, spend some time listening to Jon Cleary and you will swear he is the result of some sort of super-engineering experiment that sought to combine the absolute best of New Orleans/Funk/ Soul music into one performer- it's in his DNA- from the way he plays to the subtle ways it permeates his native English accent. In addition to being a pianist and guitarist of impeccable taste and feel, he is also a gifted vocalist. Cleary, who has 8 solo records to date, recently won a Grammy last year for Go Go Juice, (a record I had the pleasure of being a part of). He was also a member of Bonnie Raitt's band for 10 years - (she once referred to him the “9th Wonder of the World”. ) He frequently plays at the world famous Maple Leaf Bar, a place that he has had a connection with since the early 80's, as well as touring all over the world with his band. In this interview we discuss piano, guitar styles, his early years and passion finally making it to New Orleans, James Booker stories, Bonnie Raitt, what makes the New Orleans sound unique to other styles, and much much more. We do a fair bit of playing in this one too. This interview took place at Jon's home/studio in New Orleans, LA on June 2nd, 2017.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
My guest today is Mr. Johnny Vidacovich- In a town that is filled with great drummers, all with their own unique style and approach, Johnny Vidacovich easily qualifies as an institution in the New Orleans music scene. His career spans 5 decades and he's played with a who's who of New orleans music royalty- Danny Barker, Professor Longhair, James Booker, Johnny Adams, Astral Project, and many many others- as well as those from outside of New Orleans who have relied on Johnny's signature street beat grooves - John Scofield, Joe Sample, Charlie Hunter and the list goes on and on. He has also taught many students including Brian Blade and Stanton Moore. Johnny is such a great person to chat with, and as you can hear in the interview he is highly animated and super passionate about life and music. He frequently gets up to dance or move his body in a certain way to illustrate a point. He is a highly musical drummer and one of my favorites- a real poet on the drums. As you'll hear in the interview, I first met Johnny when I moved back to New Orleans. We went on to work together here and there throughout the years recording and doing some gigs from time to time….one highlight I remember is getting to do a gig with both Johnny AND Idris Mohammed- that was fun! If you like the music in this podcast check out Johnny's solo works- Mystery Street, Banks Street, Vidacovich and my solo record The Grease Factor. In the interview Johnny talks about singing what you play, phrasing, the music scene in 1950's and 60's New orleans, we go over some traditional New Orleans grooves together, his poetry, love of Paul Motian (sorry for mispronouncing his name over and over !), play a few tunes, how colors relate to sound and music and much more. Hidden behind one of the more unique and quirky personalities that is Johnny Vidacovich is a treasure trove of wisdom learned from a lifetime of playing and teaching. This interview took place at Johnny's house in the Mid City section of New orleans, LA in Feb of 2016. I hope you enjoy!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
