This Podcast is a little "inside baseball" and focuses on both General Conference of the United Methodist Church in Charlotte this Spring as well as Jurisdictional Conference in Washington State in August.   My guest for this podcast is District Superintendent, Mark Calhoun.  Mark is a thoughtful observer of all things United Methodist.   If you like it, forward it to someone, or more than one!   This is Mark Calhoun's second visit and his first Mindful Leader Podcast is HERE. Mark's' first conversation focused on context and how much that matters in our local church leadership.   Discussion with Lonnie Brooks, Alaska Conference Lay Delegate to General Conference, about Regionalization is HERE.   Conversation with Gayla Jo Slauson, Lay Delegate to General Conference from Mountain Sky Conference, is HERE.   I mention, positively I hope, Jeremy Smith and his blog Hacking Christianity.  The blog I specifically addressed is HERE.    HERE is a Chart I created of Episcopal Elections in the West since 1968.  I think it is quite telling.   Send me a note:  dennis@mantuan.org if you want to discuss.

During the show we mention that as a quote sometimes attributed to John Wesley that he didn't say:  A thought piece on the origin is HERE.

In this episode of Exploring the Blues in Chicago, Brett David Stewart sits down briefly with Keith Dixon of the Blues Heaven Foundation to discuss the important role independent record labels played in the formative years of Chicago blues. Dixon’s grandfather was Willie Dixon, and the foundation is located at the old Chess Records building and studio. Furthermore, Stewart discusses the blues with Bruce Iglauer, the founder of Alligator Records in the city of Chicago. With a catalog of over 300 releases, Alligator is responsible for some of the most legendary blues recordings in history. Koko Taylor, Lonnie Brooks, Johnny Winter, Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, amongst countless others, have had their music released on Alligator.

Of course, his context is unequivically Chicago and the legendary blues scene in that city. So, this hour is centered in Chicago, focused on James Cotton, and surrounded by artists who also helped to contribute in making his time in the blues some of the best. Buddy Guy, Lonnie Brooks, Koko Taylor, Luther Allison, and, of course, James Cotton make for another hour in The Roadhouse of the finest blues - the 629th Roadhouse Podcast.

The Brooks family is known for the business of blues. Their patriarch is the legendary Lonnie Brooks, formerly known as Guitar Jr whose two sons Ronnie Baker Brooks and Wayne Baker Brooks are receiving the torch; not just for the family legacy but the blues as a whole. Ronnie Baker Brooks has three successful contemporary blues albums under his belt produced by the legendary Minnesota based Jellybean Johnson, a veteran collaborator for Prince and Janet Jackson. His recent project pairs him with Mud Morganfield, Billy Branch and Erica Brown as a member of the Big Head Blues Club created by Todd Park Mohr who leads the popular Denver based rock band, Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Their album is called Way Down Inside and pays tribute to the late Willie Dixon.

Episode 10 - April 10, 2016  If you don't know Graham Nelson's harmonica playing, you should. He's performed with everyone from Lonnie Brooks to Gypsy jazz guitar great Alphonso Ponticelli to Donovan (whom he has a long history with being the son of Donovan's longtime road manager). We talk about his music-filled upbringing, his love of Middle-eastern and other ethnic musics, and his penchant for not only customizing harmonicas but making his own flutes.
