"Top Of The World" The Emmy Award-nominated Mark Bacino is more than just a craftsman of pure pop magic--he's a producer, composer, educator and journalist. I first got on board with Mark's music in 2003 for his brilliant album Million Dollar Milkshake, which was the follow-up to his equally brilliant debut, Pop Job. Since then, he's put out Queens English in 2010 and fifteen years later he's backed that up with his brand new album Top Of The World. A sterling ten-song set, Top Of The World is filled with hooks galore, but it's also Bacino's most observational and philosophical work yet. Filled with tracks like the thrilling percussive stomp of Not That Guy to the horny swagger of Flop Of The World, Bacino has never sounded more assured. Falling somewhere between Marshall Crenshaw and Mike Viola, Bacino's music is a refreshing and charming streetsmart pop. I call him the Cole Porter of Queens because his lyrics are clever, his timing impeccable and his humor and wisdom always on full display. Bacino is the owner of The Queens English Recording Co., a boutique studio-music production house where he produces fellow artists and composes for TV/advertising. He currently serves as Producer of New Media and Audio Content for Queens Public Television in New York City where he's earned those two Emmy nominations for his audio engineering work and he hosts both the “Queens Creative” and “Queens County USA” podcasts. He also writes for Guitar World, SonicScoop and Songwriter's Market. www.markbacino.com (http://www.markbacino.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast

At The Disco" rund um Sänger Brendon Urie. Ranking The Beatles

We're into the top 100 songs in our rankings! We can't turn back now!! Paul McCartney seems to have a knack for making sure he finishes things. "Now and Then" is a good example; he saw something there worthwhile and though it took a couple of decades, he saw it through to completion. The same can be said for "I Will," a song for which he had a melody kicking around a long time before he was able to complete a lyric for. After tossing lyrics he worked on in India with Donovan, and after John declined to help, he came up with what on paper are incredibly simple lyrics, but say so much more. And that melody...what a winner. He looped in Ringo and John to add percussion, and a brilliant vocal bass, cramming the final song with hooks in a simple arrangement. It makes for one of the more beautiful and light-hearted moments on an album that can sometimes be viewed as really dark. To discuss this song, we're thrilled to welcome back this week's guest, Mike Viola! Mike (who joined us back in 2021 to discuss #165 "Your Mother Should Know") is a wonderful singer, songwriter, and producer, who's worked with acts like Panic! At the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Mandy Moore, Jenny Lewis and more, and has written songs for numerous films like Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. He's also the voice you hear singing the brilliant "That Thing You Do!" from the film of same name. Since we last spoke, he's released the fantastic "Paul McCarthy" album, which we highly recommend you check out. And he's going to be on a solo acoustic tour in the early part of 2024, which we also highly suggest you get tickets for if he's in your area. We chat with Mike about manic creativity, songwriting responsibility, the best way to watch Get Back, and more! What do you think about "I Will at #99? Too high? Too low? Or just right? We discuss the slings and arrows of a career in music, what you can and can't get from music school, what it's like to be part of a string-playing pair, and much more. Kate Reddish is a Los Angeles-based freelance violist. She enjoys a busy and varied career subbing with nearly every major orchestra in the Southern California area, performing as a chamber musician, and teaching and coaching individuals and groups. Kate can be heard on hundreds of film scores, albums, and TV shows, and has appeared on television and on film. Kate comes from a “numbers” family: her father was a tax attorney and CPA and her mother a bookkeeper; her sister followed that path to work as a bookkeeper and financial analyst. Meanwhile, Kate, who started playing the viola through the public school system in Riverside, was certain that a life in music was the only life she wanted. Kate earned her BA and MM from UCLA (go Bruins!), studying with former Los Angeles Philharmonic principal violist Evan Wilson. Feeling nothing like a Master, she then trotted across town to USC (go Trojans!) to complete an artist's diploma with eminent pedagogue Donald McInnes. Since finishing her formal schooling, Kate has also participated in intensive courses with Burton Kaplan, Rob Knopper, Noa Kageyama, and Nathan Cole. In June of 2021, Kate started her own business, KMR Creative, consulting for online educators and coaches. She currently works closely with Nathan Cole to design and implement his many online offerings and to build the communities that rise up around those courses. Kate enjoys yoga and dance, good food and wine, card games and crossword puzzles, and creating order out of chaos. She currently lives in South Pasadena with her husband, violist and composer Eric Lea, and their sweet kitty, Misha. Eric Lea is a reasonably tall violist. He has a BM from the University of Arizona and an MM from USC (see above re: Trojans), both in viola performance. He has subbed with many symphonies and played and recorded with many bands. As the violist for the band Get Set Go, his playing could be barely discerned by millions under snappy dialogue in several episodes of Grey's Anatomy, and he has toured Japan with songwriter/producer Mike Viola (coincidence?), with whom he and Kate recorded an album called Acousto de Perfecto. He fancies himself as something of a composer now, and his song cycles can be heard at ericlea.bandcamp.com.

First, we go back to 17 May, 2022 were we turned down the noiseregarding how NOT to talk about workers, inflation, and the cost of living crisis if you are a politician, office holder, commentator, or just a decent functional adult. We find an example and teachable moment via a minister from the UK who recommended folks "take on more hours" or "move to a better paid job" to explain why that is just as tone deaf and condescending as it sounds. Then, we revist a Good Talk from March 15th, 2022 and guest Dennis Sanders talking about unions, labor, and how things have changed in the world of organized labor. Dennis draws on being the son of autoworkers and growing up in Flint, Michigan to talk frankly about the good side of unions, their limitations, and how unions should be adapting to the modern world and economy to help workers instead of hindering them. Also, from the June 16, 2022 episode of Heard Tell, after COVID being particularly brutal on service sector employees, new data is out that hints part of the labor issue falls to some old fashioned bad management, we'll talk how shift workers are getting the shaft on scheduling. And finally, from the February 21st episode of Heard Tell, Gabriella Hoffman of Young Voices joins us to talk labor issues, regulation, unions, politics, and political appointments, and more. Recent actions involving the NLRB, David Weil's nomination, and legislative fights over unionizing, the gig economy, and categorizing workers are all in the news and are ongoing battles in a very long war over government involvement with big labor, worker rights, and an ever-evolving work force and economy. From the UK guest Lettice Bromovsky from the UK returns to Heard Tell to discuss new UK Prime Minister Liz Truss. Lettice and Host Andrew talk the process of Liz Truss defeating Rishi Sunak, her background and political rise, and the weeks of news media coverage and narratives leading up the her first day in No. 10. Lettice walks us through the tough political reality PM Truss is walking into, heading a post-Boris Tory Party, facing a reinvigorated Labour Party, the pressing issues of cost of living and energy crisis, and the looming general election that in reality only give her a matter of months to make her mark and a very steep political hill to climb. Lettice also deals with the comparsion - fair and unfair - of Liz Truss and previous prime minsters, and the inevitable comparisons to Theresa May and Margret Thatcher. Then, another Best of Heard Tell covering the Law as we review conversations with attorney's Burt Likko and Em Carpenter.Plus, guest Mike Viola of FEE.org and a Young Voices contributor. Mike talks about how excessive regulation leaves us less - not more - prepared for true crises like COVID-19 and the food and energy crisis caused by Russia invading Ukraine. Mike also explains how the regulatory state is a huge part of the economy all the time, how regulation affects almost everything in the marketplace, and some better ways for us to think about and discuss the economic impact of government policies. Mike also explains what the pyramids in Egypt have to do with economics, and has a hot take on Alfredo to round out our conversation. We play part of the Heard Tell Podcast and the incredible story of Frances Hui on how see went from protester in Hong Kong to political asylym in America, and now a speaker and educator for the Dissident Project teaching the next generation the dangers of authoritarianism and what happens when you lose your freedom. Dissident Project manager Grace Bydalek also joins to explain how Frances and the other speakers of the Dissident Projec turn personal experiences into teachable moments for high school and college students. Finally, our guest is FIRE First Amendment lawyer Adam Steinbaugh who joins us to talk 1A, free speech, and censorship. Adam is part of FIRE's lawsuit against the Florida "Stop WOKE Act" and discusses why they are opposing the law, what academic freedom should and should not be, and how vague language and government overreach make for a poor law that violates more freedoms than it protects. Adam also helps us work through terminology like "woke" and "academic freedom", explains how free speech must be equally defended for everyone, and works through some common misperceptions and online bad takes about 1A.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/heard-tell/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Happy 1 year birthday to us! Thanks to everyone who's joined us on this ride so far! We're releasing this episode 1 year + a day on from our first episode, and we couldn't be more chuffed to have made it this far. We're so glad you're all here with us! Paul's made no bones about his admiration for the music of his parents' generation, the music hall numbers his family loved that must've filled the Macca home, either on record or when dad Jim played during family gatherings. He claimed to have written "When I'm 64" when he was 14, so it's safe to say he's always had a soft spot for this style of music, though John may have scoffed at it (though his brilliant guitar solo on "Honey Pie" shows that he knew EXACTLY what it needed, so he was better versed than he admits). During one of those Macca family gatherings in 1967, Paul came up with "Your Mother Should Know," a tribute to women before his generation, whom he thought, may be a bit hipper and wiser than the growing generation gap may think. The song serves as the big song & dance number which finishes the Magical Mystery Tour film, and much like the film itself, can be a divisive entry in the Beatles' catalog. As mentioned by our guest this week, to put out a song like this during the height of psychedelia & rock and roll, well, it's a pretty punk rock move on Paul's part. We're joined this week by one of our favorite singers & songwriters, Mike Viola, who first entered the scene in the late 90s with his band Candy Butchers, and as the singer on the song "That Thing You Do!" from the Tom Hanks' directed film. In addition to writing songs for films such as "Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story," and "Get Him To The Greek," Mike is an in-demand songwriter and producer, having worked with artists such as Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, Mandy Moore, Shania Twain, Dan Wilson & Semisonic, The Monkees, and more. We chat with Mike about what makes this song tick and why it's such a classic Paul song despite some of its quirks, creativity being born out of trauma, basing one's entire music career on Ram, meeting Paul (legit some of the best meeting-Paul stories ever), and his absolutely fantastic new album, 2020's Godmuffin, which we at RTB strongly suggest you pick up because it's wonderful. “I Haven’t Written My Favorite Song Yet” Mike Viola has written some of my all-time favorite songs. But the Massachusetts-born singer/songwriter tells me in this interview that what keeps pushing him creatively is that he hasn’t written his favorite song yet. Viola's musical career began when he was a teenager, playing in a hard rock band that garnered some pretty serious regional attention, including opening for Todd Rundgren and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. Viola’s solo career started with an EP in 1985 and since then he’s put out nearly 25 albums of some of the most perfect pop music you’ll ever hear. He’s produced for everyone from Ryan Adams to Fall Out Boy, recorded with Shania Twain, The Monkees, Jenny Lewis and Rachel Yamagata and he’s written tracks for and with Matt Nathanson, Mandy Moore, and John Wesley Harding. Along with his buddy Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, Viola wrote and co-produced the Oscar Nominated title track for the 1996 Tom Hanks film That Thing You Do. Viola also wrote must for the film Walk Hard and Get Him To the Greek and he currently is the VP of a and r over at Verve Records. Viola’s new album Godmuffin is a thing of wonder. Filled with songwriting finesse and masterclass pop phrasing, it might very well be his best effort yet. From ruminative tracks like "Ordinary Girl" to the aching grind of “Creeper" to the bluesy pop ripple of "Drug Rug," on Godmuffin Viola has proven once again that he’s a practically peerless songwriter who knows how to land a hook better than anyone I can think of. Godmuffin is the album that we needed in 2020 to remind us that there are still good things in their world. In this conversation, Viola talks about his love of horror movies and monsters, giving up his ticket to see Randy Rhodes, parenting during a pandemic and memories of hanging out in L.A. with Dan Bern.

“Rock and Roll’s Best Relief Pitcher" Dan Bern is always ready in the bullpen. A bona-fide songwriting machine, the Iowa-born Bern stays loose by being one of the most prolific guys out there and he’s always ready to take the mound with a new track. Bern has consistently been one of the most inventive, exciting, literate, intelligent and brilliant songwriters of the last 30 years. With close to 30 albums to his name, including his latest Mitch Marine produced effort Ivan’s Barbershop, Dan Bern is one of our very best. He’s written songs for movies like "Walk Hard" and "Get Him To The Greek," he’s toured with Ani DiFranco and he’s dueted with Emmylou Harris. But he doesn’t just write songs—he’s an accomplished painter, the author of several books and a pretty solid tennis player. He and I are going to bash it around one of these days on the tennis court, but until we do, our rallies will be conversational. In this particular rally, we chat about teasing Marshall Crenshaw in Alaska, the songwriting magic of Mike Viola and the quiet magic of Peter Fleming. With a few 20-minute sessions, you can get your brain to relax - as if you were a seasoned meditator.  You can use your smart headphones or simply buy some inexpensive headphones, to be used along with a free app on your phone. In this show you will learn: What are “Binaural Beats” What Binaural Beats do inside your brain How Binaural Beats can calm your brain or intensify your orgasms (referred to in this way as “mindgasms”) The safety of Binaural Beats and who should NOT use it. How your brain “beats” and “sounds” when you are in deep sleep, in state of calm, in a state of agitation and in a tantric state. How the concept of Binaural Beats has been used in war and in peace marches. Mike and Dr. Lindsey waxing on about the “dog beach” they visited yesterday and what it means to be in “sync” with someone. What is brain “entrainment” and how it affects you, your relationships and your brain. And, in addition, Why and how melatonin protects you against “getting” Covid and “reduces complications from COVID” even in the ICU. Any headphone works. The ones that have cushioning on the sides minimize bone conduction to brain sound, so it gives the most optimal effect. But you don’t have to use cushioned headphones, this is just an explanation of why they are the top of the line for these purposes. Andrew Curry returned to The Time Machine this week to debut two more songs from the upcoming album project "Here Comes The Reign Again: The Second British Invasion". Andrew shared Ken Stringfellow's arrangement of The Blow Monkey's "Digging Your Scene" and the Madness classic "Our House" performed by The Corner Laughers. Both songs made their world broadcast debut this past week and it was a perfect opportunity to have singer-songwriter and producer Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, Big Star and R.E.M.) on the broadcast to discuss his participation with the forthcoming release along with singer-songwriter Karla Kane talking about her bands The Corner Laughers and Agony Aunts. This week also saw the release of Fernando Perdomo's latest song "Girl With A Record Collection" off of his upcoming album "Warm" along with a music video of the single to coincide with National Record Store Day. Susanna Hoffs Returns To The Time Machine With UNDER THE COVERS Vol.3

Rockers Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have just released their third album together. "Under The Covers Vol.3" is their third album of covers that the duo put together from the songbooks of other artists that they both feel passionate about. Susanna returned to The Time Machine Radio Show last week to share the latest batch of songs. The gifted artist discussed the inspiration behind some of the songs off of the new album. She also discussed with The Time Machine's radio show host, Michael McCartney, the previous two albums from the duo known affectionately as Sid 'n' Susie (Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs), as well as her 2012 album "Someday", which became the most played album on the air for The Time Machine out of all of the records released in 2012. If you're not familiar with the album series that Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have been recording and releasing, what you essentially need to know is that the first album covered sixties material (with the exception of the early seventies classic Bee Gees song "Run To Me"). The second album "Under The Covers Vol. 2" dove into the seventies and this latest album naturally dips into the eighties. Dips may not be the correct choice of wording. This new album plunges into the eighties and both Matthew and Susanna's song choices are so inspired that this collection of songs are a must have for your music collection. Susanna is a core artist of The Time Machine's radio format going back to the eighties with her fellow band mates Vicki Peterson, Debbi Peterson and Michael Steele of The Bangles. The band, along with The Traveling Wilburys, were the most played act on The Time Machine and helped define a sound for the radio broadcast that embraced a sixties musical sensibility with the modern music scene of the time. All four albums from The Bangles in the eighties solidified their status as radio core artists on The Time Machine and their return in 2003 with "Doll Revolution" was welcomed with open arms. The domination of that album's airplay was so strong that it became the most played album of the decade followed by Rachael Yamagata's debut album "Happenstance", "Not Ready To Make Nice" by The Dixie Chicks, Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising", Alice Peacock's self titled sophomore album, "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones, John Mayer's "Room For Squares", "Mondo Magneto" by Brian Ray, "Lurch" from Mike Viola, "Brainwashed" by George Harrison, Nushu's "Nevermind Lullabye" and Rilo Kiley's "More Adventurous". Susanna found this old flyer to share for a June 13th, 1981 performance of The Colours, before the band became The Bangles, in the basement of the Echo Park Methodist Church Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include The Bangles, Rachael Yamagata and Ronnie Spector.
