COVID-19 has the potential of permanently closing 30% of small businesses. One business where that happened is Sudden Coffee. This powerful and vulnerable interview with Josh Zloof, founder of Sudden Coffee will shed light on the challenges that many small businesses face.Per Josh:Unfortunately, the COVID outbreak hit us pretty bad and we're permanently closing Sudden :-/ I'm in the midst of it as we speak. For a little more context - we actually had our best revenue months on record in Jan & Feb, we were getting strong traction/ product market fit. However, we needed additional funding and feedback from the VC world was that they did not want to fund food manufacturing because it was a physical goods business. Amidst all of this of course, the outbreak happened.I'm planning on writing a retrospective on it once the dust settles - its a strange case to have 'product market fit' but are forced to shut down because its difficult to capitalize. Framework for Determining What Career Opportunities to Pursue - Josh tried out 10+ different business ideas over 1.5 years. It wasn't until he identified his values (Purpose, Community, Growth, and Excitement) and matched them to his ideas that he shut down all of the companies that didn't align and launched Sudden Coffee.https://www.suddencoffee.com/pages/products
Josh Zloof is the co-founder and CEO of Sudden Coffee, the creators of the first specialty instant coffee. Sudden Coffee works with 30 coffee roasters worldwide, companies like Equator Coffee, Intelligentsia Coffee and Ritual Coffee. Josh got his start as an operations consultant at McKinsey and Company and later was a product manager at Groupon, building a point of sale for restaurants. After developing a passion for hospitality and good food and drink by throwing events, Josh founded Sudden Coffee to use his skills in operations to share hospitality driven experiences with more people.
Josh Zloof, Co-Founder & CEO of Sudden Coffee, is passionate about more than just serving up a great cup of coffee. After launching several businesses that ended in some success and even more failures, Josh knew he needed to find his “why.” This led to him founding Sudden Coffee on the idea of “making one billion people happy.” Today, Sudden has served over 100,000 cups of their single-origin, specialty grade, instant coffee (delivered right to your door). With over $3.3M raised from investors, Josh and Sudden Coffee have been featured in the New York Times, Food & Wine, and GQ. Josh chalks a lot of his success up to manifestation. Simply stating your goals, telling people about them, and envisioning the future you want is enough to make them a reality - Josh calls these “Black Swan Events,” and he’s experienced many of them. At Burning Man, every exchange of goods or services is an opportunity to connect. What if we could break down those same barriers in “real life” with your server, bank teller or barista? Josh can share how this philosophy is inspiring the way Sudden Coffee aims to enhance human interactions in the simplest of ways. For Josh, it started with a $1,200 investment in a life coach, a decision many scoffed at. Now, with a disciplined morning routine, regular meditation practice, therapy sessions, and working on his dream company, Josh can share a vision of an individualized approach to self-care. Switching their business to a B2B model helped them cut out most of their marketing dollars. He's attended Burning Man 9 times, and after his first experience there, he started his company. Invest in yourself, pay someone to help you get through this process. Take the money you'd use for a vacation to hire a coach Figure out what your core values are. Instant coffee has a bad reputation, and you may think it's well earned. But that means there's room for disruption, and Josh Zloof's company, Sudden Coffee, has patented a process for capturing all the flavor of the world's best coffee and packaging it in a convenient test tube. In this episode of Hack the Process, Josh will tell us what drew him away from a stable career to lead a startup, how he pivoted from selling consumer subscription plans to partnering with artisanal coffee roasters, and what he's learned from avoiding traditional business books in favor of reading fiction. What would you do if you started a company and it failed? What if you started multiple companies and they failed? Most people would stop. So many of us take those experiences personally and create a narrative about what it says about our abilities. That's what I love about Josh's story! After going through some successes and even more failures, Josh Zloof didn't give up on his entrepreneurial dreams. Instead, he realized that he simply needed to get intentional about his values, acquire the skills he lacked, and create a well-balanced support system. Josh made a conscious decision that his next company would make one billion people happy. And that is exactly what he is on the road to accomplish. Josh is the co-founder and CEO of Sudden Coffee, a company focused on producing single origin, specialty grade, instant coffee (delivered right to your door). To date, Sudden Coffee has raised over $3.3 million dollars and served over 100,000 happy customers. In addition to making people happy, Sudden Coffee has been featured in The New York Times, Food & Wine, and GQ. Josh's journey shows that you don't have to give up at the first, or second, or even the 5th sign of failure. What you need most in those moments is to take a step back, reassess, and try again. Here is what we chat about in this episode: Why not succeeding at first isn't a reflection on who you are as a person. The importance of being clear on your values. Why you should create a support system that will help you succeed. And so much more! In this week’s episode of Taste Radio Insider, we’re joined by Josh Zloof, the co-founder and CEO of Sudden Coffee, an innovative brand of specialty instant coffee. Founded in 2015, Sudden is attempting to revolutionize the $40 billion market for instant coffee by emphasizing its proprietary production process and by focusing on “scalable hospitality.” As part of our conversation, Zloof spoke about Sudden’s mission of using an instant product to democratize access to speciality coffee and why it was designed to be “Grandma proof.” He also explained how the company has zeroed in on Gen X as its key consumer demographic, discussed the challenges of managing both manufacturing -- Sudden operates its own production facility -- and marketing as a small company, and why he believes that the product attributes of Sudden are more important that the brand itself. Show notes: 1:42: A Few Sips of “Mud Water,” Canned Wine and Candy Milk — You know it’s a special episode of Taste Radio Insider when the host gulp Snickers-flavored chocolate milk and wash it down with chai and wine. There’s also discussion about people stealing John Craven’s Instagram photos, the emergence of the canned wine segment, how Abbot Kinney Blvd. in Venice, Calif. is the epicenter of food and beverage innovation, and why it’s a no-brainer for entrepreneurs seeking investment to attend BevNET Live and/or NOSH Live. 13:40: Interview: Josh Zloof, Co-Founder/CEO, Sudden Coffee -- Zloof was visiting from San Francisco to attend the 2019 Specialty Coffee Expo and stopped by BevNET HQ to record an interview with Taste Radio editor/producer Ray Latif. Zloof spoke about the origins of the company and how prior jobs in supply chain logistics and hospitality fueled his interest in coffee. He also discussed how speciality coffee roasters including Intelligentsia have supported its development and reshaped its business model, how Sudden is attempting to create experiential moments for its customers, and why the long-term vision is about “branding the process.” Brands in this episode: Snickers, Twix, MUD/WTR, Cha Cha Matcha, Four Sigmatic, Besa Mi Vino, Lila Wines, Oskar Blues, Sudden Coffee, Taster’s Choice, Folgers, Intelligentsia, Starbucks, Equator Coffee, Ritual Coffee, Spark Coffee, Keurig, Dunkin’
Customer research is the core of every good marketing strategy. Finding product-market fit is nearly impossible if you don't talk to a ton of people about your product, test it out, and find the audience who truly loves it. This is exactly the method that helped Josh Zloof find the right customers for Sudden Coffee. He faced what seemed like an insurmountable challenge -- how do you change the bad reputation of instant coffee? To most people, it's seen as cheap, fast, and pretty tasteless. In comparison, Sudden Coffee offers coffee snobs everywhere a fast and delicious cup that you can buy today on Amazon or at Whole Foods. But it wasn't an easy path to get there! After working at Groupon, Josh was determined to start a company in the food space, but couldn't settle on the right idea. It took him tons of experimentation, a lot of customer research, and a complete re-brand before Sudden found its identity and core market.
EP 55: Brewing Up a Great Marketing Strategy with Sudden Coffee In episode 55 of the Lion’s Share Marketing Podcast, Tyler sits down with Josh Zloof, the CEO and Co-Founder of Sudden Coffee, to discuss building a startup. The pair cover lessons marketers can use to understand their customers, marketing efficiently, and turning initial growth into long-term success. Before the interview, Tyler sits down with another one of Fidelitas’ PR interns, Maria, to discuss “Peelgate”, Samsung’s latest controversy around their new foldable smartphones. Tyler and Maria talk about the costs in quality control when racing to be first to market, discussing Samsung’s pitfalls, differences their competitors take in product development, and applicable PR lessons for our listeners at home. Tyler also speaks with Josh about co-founding Sudden Coffee, an innovative company providing high-quality specialty coffee in a convenient instant form. Josh opens up about Sudden Coffee’s rebranding, including re-identifying their target customer and choosing the right brand-development partner. Tyler and Josh later dive into the importance of balancing data and storytelling when creating effective marketing campaigns. Finally, Josh gives his key takeaway: to look outside your company for solutions and not focus solely on engineering solutions in-house. He emphasizes the value, especially with startups, in looking outward to source ideas and information for new and creative solutions.
