The million-dollar question within conservatism these days is what happens now?  After the tumultuous years of the Trump administration and with a Republican party gearing up for civil war to determine who owns the heart and soul of the Right, to say nothing of looming questions of the role of nationalism and populism competing against conservatism, it’s difficult to predict how all of this will ultimately shake out.   Joining Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis to try to offer some clarity in our murky times is Cal Davenport, co-host of In The Trenches Podcast, a show of two young conservatives having conversations with people who are in the arena of ideas.  Josh and Cal discuss what a future coalition of the Right might consist of and what conservative giants of old taught that might benefit us in our present dilemma.  Cal offers three prescriptions for how our American political discourse might turn from its current dangerous trajectory and how conservatism might regain its footing.   Cal Davenport is co-founder and co-host of the In the Trenches Podcast  on conservative intellectual thought.  He has written for The Wasington Examiner, RedState, The Resurgent and more.  He has worked in Congress, for political campaigns, for think tanks, and in political consulting.  Cal received his M.A. in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Witten/Herdecke University.

The sad truth is that 60 percent of small businesses fail in the first five years, and it’s not because most businesses are offering a bad product or service — it’s because they make poor financial decisions. And the only reason that people keep making bad financial decisions is that they don’t know what they don’t know! Michael had this experience when he was thrust into a leadership role at his organization after spending 11 years in the Navy. For the first time ever, he had P&L accountability… but he didn’t even know what P&L meant, and he had a hard time figuring out how to translate all of the financial jargon. That’s why Michael started KFE Solutions, where he helps other business owners create strong business foundations that they can build sustained success off of. What significance does the month of February hold for you? In the U.S., this is a time to acknowledge and celebrate Black history. No matter what cultural background you identify with, Black History Month holds significance in what it represents for this country as well as what it causes us to consider. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: www.heartfelthippie@gmail.com Black male identity development - it's a bit of a mouthful, but it's an important topic in today's world. There are massive disparities and gaps in the achievements of racial subgroups in America, particularly when we look at college attendance and completion. Enter Justin! Justin Rose is the Director of the Diversity Center at the University of Illinois Springfield and also has the personal experience of being a minority student in college to draw from. Justin is not only doing amazing work on his current campus, but he is also working on his PhD in Higher Education so that he can continue making an impact on the lives of college students. Justin and I met while in school together, and I have always appreciated his welcoming attitude that has made me feel comfortable in sharing my thoughts and opinions. I think you'll be able to tell exactly what I'm talking about when you hear Justin speak in this episode! In today's conversation, Justin addresses some stereotypes surrounding Black males and also talks about the challenges faced in both getting to college as well as staying in college. Even if you are not involved in a higher education sector like Justin and I, you are going to hear how you can make a difference when we look at some of these disparities that exist for minority groups. Justin makes clear that we have the choice between being a part of the problem or being a part of the solution. This is a societal issue, not one that's specific to one group of people, and we all hold power to make a difference! You are truly going to be enlightened in this conversation and probably hear some things that you've never thought of before. Perhaps you've never considered why Black History Month is significant, or what the point of Affirmative Action is! My hope is that after today, your mind will be racing. We all have value to contribute to this society, and it's time that we decrease the achievement gaps that separate us and prevent us from putting forth our assets. Also, you're going to love Justin's personality and wish that you could get a motivational pep talk from him every day. Do you wrestle with the hot topic issues in our culture? Do have a hard time wrapping your own mind around them? Are you looking for ways to start having these conversations with your children of any age? If you answered yes to any of those questions, this is an episode we hope you will find very helpful. Leila Miller, our guest, considers this day and time an age of unreason. Far too many issues of the day are looked at and judged using human feelings in the name of mercy. We need to use our reason and most importantly, we need to teach our children to use theirs. The understanding of the objective truths in today’s tough moral issues will keep us rooted in Christ, our Catholic faith, and freed from the yoke of secular slavery.    Please consider financially supporting our Podcast Our Guest:   Co-author of Made This Way: How to Prepare Kids to Face Today’s Tough Moral Issues (with Trent Horn), Leila Miller worked in advertising before becoming a wife and stay-at-home mom. From home, she wrote a regular editorial column for The Arizona Republic  before starting her blogs, Little Catholic Bubble and LeilaMiller.net. Leila is active on facebook and has been featured on Catholic television, radio, and in print. Her previous two books, Primal Loss: The Now-Adult Children of Divorce Speak and Raising Chaste Catholic Men, address in simple terms the Church’s timeless teachings on marriage, family, and the moral education of children.  She and her husband Dean have eight children and several grandchildren.   Show Notes: Find more from co-author, Trent Horn Modesty as an Act of Charity, Thriving in the Trenches Podcast   Call to Action –  Let us start educating ourselves and forming our reason so that we will be able to tackle the issues of our current day. Then, we will be to start forming our children (according to their age) so that they might stand firm against the thoughts of the world. Scripture –  “I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:1-2 Saint Quote –  “It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal.” – St. Pope John Paul ii

Welcome to episode 102 of the Within the Trenches Podcast, a podcast based on the experience of being a 911 dispatcher. The show is going strong and while stories are the main focus of the podcast, 911 companies and organizations are coming on the show to talk about what they are doing. The way I look at it is that if I can supply dispatchers with some free training through the podcast, why not? On episode 101 I spoke with Eddie of St. Louis County, Missouri and he shared his 911 story as well as what it was like for him in the dispatch center during the Ferguson riots. If you missed that episode, please make sure to go and listen and share.  The Sons/Daughters of Dispatch decals are currently up for a second round and available for only 2 weeks (end date April 2nd 2016). They are 5X5 decal’s at $9.99 + shipping. A portion of the money made goes to fund a scholarship for the 2016 National NENA conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. There are also t-shirts of the logo made by Threadsy Tee that will be going up for sale as well so keep an eye out for them. As for the scholarship it includes, Complementary registration to the conference & expo Complementary registration for a one-day pre-conference course of your choice A $500 travel stipend Official Within the Trenches t-shirt To register, make sure to go to thejabberlog.com/scholarship/scholarship.php Today’s guest is known throughout social media and the blogosphere as Dispatch Monkey but today we find out who the man is behind the monkey…or curtain. This person is a police dispatcher working for an agency in western Canada and his given name is Lloyd. Welcome to episode 101 of the Within the Trenches Podcast. Last week I posted the 100th episode of the podcast and in that episode I took a trip back in time to how everything started out and what’s to come. I played clips from episodes 1, 6 and 12 and I hope you enjoyed them because they were so much fun to record. Since that episode I have received many emails for the Sons and Daughters of Dispatch vinyl decals. Because so many people wanted a second round I opened up the vault and they are available once again. They will only be available for 2 weeks so get them while you can. They are 5X5 decals at $9.99 + shipping and can be found here. A portion of the money made goes to fund a scholarship for the 2016 National NENA conference in Indianapolis, Indiana.   Scholarship includes: Complementary registration to the conference & expo Complementary registration for a one-day pre-conference course of your choice A $500 travel stipend Official Within the Trenches t-shirt To apply for the scholarship make sure to go to thejabberlog.com/scholarship/scholarship.php   On today’s episode I got to speak to dispatch trainer Eddie from St. Louis County, Missouri. Eddie shared his 911 dispatch story along with what it was like for him when he was working in dispatch during the heated situation that was the Ferguson riots. I must preface this by saying that no specific incidents are talked about because of open/pending court cases, but it focuses more on Eddie's stress level during that time. Eddie attended many hours worth of stress management but nothing could prepare him for what he dealt with.   This is a must listen so make sure to check it out and share! If you've been following this blog for any period of time, you know I've recorded several interviews with game-changers, status-quo challengers, and creative insurgents on topics like creativity, writing, publishing, bootstrapping, and entrepreneurship. All of those interviews I hosted via dropbox - which meant you could download the episode to your computer, but it came with a bunch of limitations. After a conversation with Jeff Goins (www.goinswriter.com), he suggested I make this series into a legitimate podcast series - one you can find on iTunes, Zune, etc... So, I did it. Now you can: Stream the file from this website Get the file on your iPhone, Mp3 player, Zune, etc... Find this in iTunes (may take a few days to populate the first episodes), Zune, and other podcast websites Download the file to your computer (because they're so good you'll want to listen to them ALL the time) I have definitely upped the quality.  Let me know what you think! But for those new to my website and content... What's the In the Trenches Podcast all About? In the Trenches is a bi-weekly podcast series meant to inspire and motivate you to do creative, important work. Every broadcast, I sit down and have authentic conversations with game-changers, status-quo challengers, and creative insurgents; individuals who write, draw, produce, publish, create, break, build, invent and lead. All of the people I interview are actually on the ground making things happen – they’re in thick of the creative fight, working to produce something epic, bold, and unconventional, day in and day out. Each day, they go to work, doing the tough, painful and scary work of creating something new; each day, they struggle to create for the rest of us something that impacts our lives deeply and meaningfully; each day, they add to their vast, growing resume and portfolio of incredible content...but they don’t do the work to build a portfolio nor to create a resume. They do the work because it matters. These artists, writers, entrepreneurs, warriors and leaders struggle and strive, day in and day out, doing the hard, creative work, not because it’s pretty or glamorous (it’s usually not), but because it’s a part of who they are.  They truly are IN THE TRENCHES, and the world is better for it. None of these conversations are pre-scripted or edited.  These are all rough takes – gritty and authentic conversations with real people doing real work. How Can In the Trenches Help You? The goal with each conversation and with every broadcast, is to give you a deep, meaningful and authentic look into the lives of the people who impact our lives with their work. That’s why I don’t read from a script, nor edit the dialogue – I want each conversation to feel like you’re right there with us in the coffee shop, listening in on some seriously incredible stories and thoughts. It helps, too, that every interviewee is someone I highly respect, and often, a good friend.  There’s something very real about a personal conversation – something that gives you true insight and real emotion that gets lost on cookie-cutter talk shows, or pre-rehearsed interview series. So I say all of that to say this: this podcast is designed to inspire you to make something worthwhile; to get you to instigate and create something meaningful; and, finally, to get you to lead – truly lead – and make an impact – one that’s even greater than the stories you’ll hear in these conversations. Which means, if you listen to these broadcasts, you have an end of the bargain to uphold – and that’s to do something awesome, and to let me know about it. So Why Am I Doing This? Well, first, it’s selfish. I love creativity, and art, and business, and philosophy, and leadership; and I love talking about these things. Getting to know all these wonderful people and hear their incredible stories really motivates me to keep doing the hard, creative work.  Even if I wasn’t recording these conversations, I would still have them on a consistent basis, because, deep down, I NEED to hear these stories and know others are there with me, fighting the creative war, in the trenches right beside me.  So, first and foremost, it is selfish. But the second reason is entirely unselfish. The second reason is because I want to share these stories and this knowledge with you.  Period. I’m doing this podcast series because I want to share these incredible insights and stories with likeminded individuals…people like myself who love this stuff and like nothing better than to really get inside the brain of creative, successful people. I think of it as my contribution to the creative fight; that I can, somehow, through these podcasts, help you with YOUR creative struggles; that I can keep you from going off the metaphorical ledge into the pit of ‘I never did anything with my life’ and instead, inspire you to create something incredible. Real quick: something incredible doesn’t have to be conventional art…it doesn’t mean painting, writing, designing, etc…though it CAN mean this, it doesn’t HAVE to be this.  It can be anything you want, that you believe in, that's worthwhile to you, but it requires one thing: Individual Choice: You made the conscious choice to pursue it.  Someone else isn't forcing your hand.  Nobody told you to do it.  You decided to go and you went. No, doing something incredible doesn't have to fit in a box.  And that's the point. What's in this Broadcast? In this episode, I'll share with you: What In the Trenches Podcast is all about What you can expect How it will help you to start, finish, and ship your great project How it will get you to create your life's work Why I'm creating this podcast A little about me (Tom Morkes) Thanks so much for reading and listening! Check back next week for the beginning of a life changing series. I really hope this series inspires you to create your life’s work. Whatever you do, don’t stop creating... - Tom Morkes

Hello everyone! Whitney and I are back with an epic episode 18 of Within the Trenches. It has been about a month or so since Whit and I were together for an episode but we are back to hook you up with another excellent show. This week both Whitney and I have been battling some health issues but my minor cold and Whit's ear were unable to hold us back. On this episode we had the pleasure of interviewing none other than the very popular KMK of Diary of a Mad Dispatcher. KMK shared some awesome stories from her dispatch career including her very first 9-1-1 call and another call from a drunk who called in saying that he had fallen off a cliff but what he didn't realize was that there are no cliffs in the area he was in. Get ready to hear from the Mad Dispatcher herself and make sure to check her out on Facebook and her t-shirt store on etsy.com by searching "The Mad Dispatcher." As always you can email the show at thejcast@thejabberlog.com and 'Like' our new Facebook page! In this episode I said it was just Within the Trenches but it's actually Within the Trenches Podcast.
