Vachana expression has till now been identified with a sect of Shaivism called Virashaivism/Lingayatism. Its historical framework is considered to be 12th century, in Kalyana, the imperial capital of the Chalukyas and later, of Kalachuryas. The main progenitor of Lingayatism, say scholars, was Basavanna, Finance Minister of emperor Bijjala. The literature also further assumes that Basavanna set-up in Kalyana Anubhava Mantapa, an assembly of saint-poets. The Vachana poets are supposed to have gathered in this assembly to debate matters spiritual, compose, read, and discuss each others' compositions. The Lingayat literary harvest is said to be contemporaneous with the active period of Basavanna's tenure with the emperor. This brief but intense poetic efflorescence was cut short by political upheavals caused by the violation of traditional caste rules. The questioning of the caste order and gender subjugation irritated the hegemony so much that it led to the unleashing of violence against the followers of the new sect. This episode of BIC talks which outlines the new approach to literary and cultural context of Vachanas was the second of the four part masterclass titled The Paths of the Hand, Heart and Void, by Prof H S Shivaprakash on the Vachana efflorescence of Karnataka examines the neglected contribution and philosophy of artisan Vachana poets, to show that it was an independent soteriological approach different from Bhakti and mysticism. Kunjan Nambiar's Kalyana Saugandhikam… Kalakkathu Kunjan Nambiar, a poet, performer, satirist and the inventor of the art form, Ottamthullal. In this story, Bheeman, in search of Kalyanasaugandhikam, meets an old monkey blocking his path, and arrogantly says, ‘Nokkada nammude marge kidakkunna Markada neeyangu mari kidasada' And what followed was an enchanting 'Samwadam' between the two brothers, born across two different yugams
Two essential ceremonies are conducted in Brahmin Households in the South. These are followed as a More than as one sanctioned by Sruthi or even Smriti. More is a Group of practices followed by a specific group rather than as a matter of personal choice. These are followed in the South of India, in the States of Tamil Nadu,Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra. One is Samaradhanai and the other is Sumangali Prarathanai. Samaradhanai is conducted before or after an auspicious occasion like Ayush Homa, Upanayana, Pilgrimage , Marriage. This is conducted for any auspicious occasion. This is conducted either before or after the event . In Samaradhanai , Family Deity is worshiped at Home and people are fed. In Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya, this is called Dhadhiyaarathanai. In those case where people are not sure of their Family Deity, the Pooja is offered to Lord Subrahmanya, in the case of Iyers, and in the case of Sri Vaishnavas, Lord Balaji. The other ceremony is the Sumangali Prarthanai. This again is a custom practiced and it does not find a reference in the Sruthi or Smriti. This function is more of sentiments practiced in the Family. This has to be performed, as a thumb rule, following the practices of the ancestors .While it is not advisable to start this practice if it has not been practiced by the ancestors, it is equally essential note that the practice is not to be discontinued if it had been in vogue in the Family. This is a function meant for women, married with Husband being alive. This has to be performed once a year for one Gothra and more than once in year should not be conducted. Tuesdays and Saturdays are to be avoided. Fridays during the Waxing of the Moon is advisable. Wednesdays/Thursdays are also permissible. Ashtami,Navami Thithis are normally avoided. Panchami is preferable. In this function the Blessings of the departed Sumangalis, those whose deaths precede the death of their husbands are sought and those who died young before getting married. Generally, if the daughter is getting married, the event is done before the marriage. In the case of a son getting married, this is performed after the marriage, with the Daughter-in-law conducting it. 7 ladies and 2 young girls (preferably below the age of 10) are invited to participate in the function, partake the feast and receive thamboolam. The total number of ladies should always be in Odd numbers. The maximum number of ladies allowed normally is 11. Minimum is 5 +2. Advisable that unmarried Girl is about Eight Years as it is believed that she represents the Devi. The ladies who sit for the puja represent all the women of the family who are no more alive. The function is presided over by the elderly lady members of the family. Usually the kartha is a sumangali from the family. The gifts to the ladies vary among families and depend on the financial status of the kartha, very similar to the nandi sradham. The menu for the feast is also very similar. 9 yds saree in silk or cotton is be bought along with a Blouse piece. The preferable colours are red, yellow and green. Invite and procedure. Those to be invited, kumkum, haldi, oil, shikakai, vasanai podi are to offered at thier Home a day earlier On the morning of the day, wash the 9 yds saree & a blouse piece with madi (shuddam)after bath & dry. The Person conducting the Sumangali Prarthana should not take an oil bath. Kalyana kolam/Rangoli in the entrance, and semman & tie “ mavilai” at Home. For the pudavai kalam – put a square kolam, (padi kolam), over that keep a palakai & put kolam on that. In front of that, put a kolam to keep the elai. On both sides of the Pudavai(Sareee) kalam put kolam for 2 elais , beside for elais facing North, East is preferred next Fold the dry saree so that the “ pallu” comes on the top. The corner of the same should face N. Fold the blouse & keep on that. On the saree keep the following: https://ramanisblog-in.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/raman --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ramanispodcast/message

How do we go beyond the duality of subject and object, self and other, to experience the true nature of reality? There is no real Buddhism if it’s all about self liberation. We have to see other people as like ourselves. Jnanavaca, telling the story of Meghiya, unequivocally draws out the importance of sangha and kalyana mitrata as the means to bring the Dharma to life in the world. Excerpted from the talk What is Sangha & Kalyana Mitrata? From the series entitled The Bi-Tendential Value of Being & The Greater Mandala given by Jnanavaca and Subhadramati at the London Buddhist Centre, 2019. *** Subscribe to our Free Buddhist Audio podcast - a full Dharma talk every week! Here Karunadhi introduces us to the Red Rite of Fascination. Friendship emerges from love for our friends, but also can evoke strong attachment. Communication and the samgrahavastu (means of unification) of loving speech are the antidote for grasping and projection. This week, The Musafir Stories speaks to Neeharika Satyavada who is a digital strategist turned blogger from Hyderabad! Sit back and enjoy as Neeharika takes us on a roadtrip through Karimnagar! Today's destination: Karimnagar, TS Nearest Airport: Rajiv Gandhi Intl airport, Hyderabad Nearest Railway Station: Karimnagar railway station Prerequisities - n/a Packing - comfortable clothes and shoes as there might be some climbing to do at the forts! Time of the year - Monsoons is the best season to go see the forts and ruins surrounded by shades of green. Length of the itinerary: 2 days Itinerary Highlights: Day 1 Molangur Fort Built during the reign of Kakatiya dynasty/ Prathapa Rudra: 1163 - 1195 (12th centry) This is also a transit point between Warangal and Elgandal The fort is located on a granite hill and has unfortunately been a victim of incessant quarrying. Still no concrete efforts to stop the degradation The fort also houses the Molang Shah dargah, named after a famous saint who visited the region Additionally, two temples dedicated to lord Shiva are also present so is a well famously called as Doodh bawli Elgandal Fort This is a magnificent fort on the banks of Manair river It is famous for 3 minars that gives us some insight into the architecture of the kakatiya dynasty. The minars are a part of a mosque situated right on top of the fort. There is also a small Hanuman temple while scaling up the fort steps which is functional. The fort was eventually occupied by Qutub Shahi dynasty, the Moghuls and Nizams after a period of rule under the Kakatiyas and Bahamanis. The fort was rebuilt in 1754 AD by Zafaruddhaula during the reign of Sikendar Jha. - Karimuddin was a khilledar and Karimnagar was named after him, gives us an idea of the significance of the fort and the rulers. After spending the second half of the day at Elgandal, you can head back to Karimnagar town for lodging. The town also boasts of some silver filigry work and miniatures of charminar and other monuments. After spending the night at Karimnagar, you can head off to visit more temples on Day 2 Day 2 Manthani ruins This historical place is also known as Mantrapuri or village of hymns, center for vedic learning It is famous for the Gautameshwar temple with Shiva as the residing deity. The ruins have an eerie look about them, specially during the monsoons when the area is covered by lush green grass and moss. Situated on the banks of river godavari adds to the great views at the temple This place has been famous as the home to 1000 brahmin families, often refered to as house of mantras (hymns) The ruins are reminiscent of the scens from the Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book (Indian version) where Mowgli ends up a the ruins of the ancient temple. Nagnur ruins These ruins are of Kakatiya and Kalyana temples, some built by the Chalukyas The mainstay of the area is the Trikuta temple (3 idols of Shiva) Lord Shiva is the residing god of the Trikuta temple. The temple is currently being restored and conserved. Other places of interest: Dhulikatta (buddhist shrine) which has relics and stupas attributed to Buddhism.
