Shownotes: As a podcast host one of my biggest joys is celebrating incredible people making a difference. People who I know through my work or because of my podcast or from my networks who have raised the bar either in their personal or professional life.My guest on the 129th episode of The Elephant in the Room podcast is Ashima Tyagi, our lives intersected briefly in the late 2000s when we worked in different divisions of one of India's largest PR and PA agency. At the time Ashima was a rookie, getting to grips with operating in male dominated and patriarchal metals and mining industry in India. Fast forward to 2024 when I bumped into her on LinkedIn. I was chuffed to see Ashima Tyagi was Economics Associate Director, at S&P Global Market Intelligence unit in Singapore.I had a lot of questions for her – about the move from Delhi to Singapore, her experience of living and working in a new country and culture away from her family. I was curious to understand how she was navigating work-life balance and what it meant to her, especially considering that we have it drilled into us, that hard work (long hours) and sacrifice is the route to success. We also spoke about her leadership style has evolved over the years, the impact of imposter syndrome, how organizational culture can drag women down or enable them to thrive, her role in WINS S&P Global, networks and networking, her advice to young women joining the industry today, what motivates her and ambition……While Ashima's may not recognize it her move to Singapore was a brave decision at many levels a) She had never moved cities before b) She was leaving behind her husband and one year old son c) Her motivation was personal growth. Not many young women in this part of the world are able to priorities their personal and professional ambitious and it continues to stymie and disadvantage them. So, kudos @Ashima Tyagi, every little step counts……To hear more about Ashima's personal and professional growth head to the podcast (link in comments)

In this episode, I have the privilege of speaking with Vaishnavi Sundar, a self-taught filmmaker and advocate for women's rights, about her groundbreaking documentary, Behind the Looking Glass. This film delves into the often-overlooked experiences of women whose male partners “transition,” shedding light on the emotional turmoil and coercive control they face. Why is it that these women, often silenced and marginalized, feel compelled to redefine their identities in the shadow of their partners?Vaishnavi shares powerful insights into the dynamics of narcissism and gaslighting that permeate these relationships. How do societal expectations and gender ideology contribute to the erasure of these women's voices? As we explore the metaphor of the "looking glass," we uncover the disturbing reality of men who, in their quest for self-identity, leave their partners feeling like mere ghosts of their former selves. What happens when these women finally muster the courage to leave? What challenges do they face in reclaiming their autonomy and identity? Join us as we navigate these complex questions and hear the poignant stories of resilience and hope from those who have endured this unique form of domestic violence. You won't want to miss this eye-opening conversation that challenges the narratives surrounding gender identity and the often-unseen victims of this movement.Watch Behind the Looking Glass on YouTube.Vaishnavi Sundar is a writer and a self-taught filmmaker from Chennai, India. In this episode of The Free Radical Podcast, Swami Padmanabha and Arcana-siddhi, a marital counselor and practicing Vaishnavi for almost 50 years, consider a wide range of topics circling around the necessity to debunk the false myth that the grihasta ashram is intrinsically inferior to other ashrams and redeem the conception of the grihasta ashram from being the “deep, dark well of material existence” into the sacred position it is meant to hold, just like the sannyasa ashram can be both in potential. Everything is about how we approach it. Some of the topics included:•OVER-ESTIMATION of monastic superheroes•EFFECTS OF DENYING VALUE OF FAMILY : disappointment, guilt, shame, marital discord, abuse, broken vows, and child and spousal neglect.•POSITIVE ATTACHEMENT and affection•SACRIFICES in the grihasta ashram that lead to a healthy self-forgetfulness•DENYING THE POTENTIAL SACREDNESS of marriage and family, feelings and emotions, our humanity•SACRED SEX REQUIRES the proper intimacy with one's own emotions—it is not a cheap thing. THE MAIN ISSUES for which devotee couples seek counseling:1.SEXUAL AND EMOTIONAL INTIMACY-a lot of discord is in relation to the idea of “sex for procreation only”. This topic lead to the discussion of taking standardized vows, 1 size fits all, which are known to cause dysfunction either because many who make them know they will break them, or they go neurotic in trying to keep them for the sake of fitting. 1-size anything is not very personal.2.ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES—often the wife works outside the home but is still seen as responsible for all of the house hold duties such as cleaning, cooking, shopping,3.LEGACY BURDENS—paradigms that we have imbibed from prior generations and transmit without noticing. Each generation bears the responsibility to stop the hand-me-downs of trauma. One big one to retire is MISOGYNY: if women are considered “less than” then how can they be valued in a relationship. The discussion wound its way to the Enneagram and how it can help us more clearly see the traps of our particular ego, the paradigm thru which we filter reality, the key to open our cell, and reveal our strategies working against us. The exploration concluded speaking about the importance of having a regular and steady practice of meditation. Arcana-siddhi provided personal account as well as that of studies and her own experiences with counseling couples that a regulated practice has an affect on all levels—psychic, emotional and physical—of both the individual and the couple. This documentary is about the lives of women whose partners have or want to ‘transition'. What is it like to create a modern, feminist retelling of an ancient, foundational text? Vaishnavi Patel–author of the instant New York Times bestselling novel Kaikeyi, a reimagining of the Hindu epic the Ramayana–paints a vivid picture in this episode of Book Dreams. Vaishnavi's novel “tells the story of the evil stepmother character [Kaikeyi], who sets off the whole epic by exiling Rama, and then just sort of disappears. [The novel] asks, What if she had reasons for doing what she did? What if the story was a little bit different and we can understand her actions rather than them just being spur-of-the-moment jealousy, which is what we get in the Ramayana?” In this conversation with Eve and Julie, Vaishnavi relates why she became fascinated by Kaikeyi's story; how her research led her to surprising evidence of feminism in the Ramayana source material; how she's handled backlash from people who “believe in some sort of Hindu supremacy” and who deem her novel a threat; and why the novel in fact strengthened her relationship with Hinduism, as well as the connection of some of her readers to their Hindu faith. Vaishnavi Patel is an attorney focusing on constitutional law and civil rights and the author of the New York Times bestselling novel Kaikeyi. She writes at the intersection of Indian myth, feminism, and anti-colonialism. One more thing: Book Dreams Inc.—a nonprofit that Julie and Eve founded that provides books to kids who lack them—is co-hosting a holiday event for students at the Monarch School, which serves homeless children in San Diego. They're covering the cost of filling a bookmobile with books for all 300 students. The bookmobile will arrive at the school, and each child will be able to choose a book for themselves, just in time for the holidays. If you'd like to help, go here and click on the yellow donate button. No amount is too small, and any extra funds will add books to the school library. All donations are tax-deductible. Vaishnavi Sundar, a writer and self-taught filmmaker from Chennai, discusses her film Dysphoric (2021) that explores the social, medical, and institutional constructions of “gender identity” and her forthcoming film Behind The Looking Glass (2023) that gives voice to the women who's partners “transition.” Analysing the influence of western theories within India in recent decades, Sundar addresses how the theories of “gender identity” have come to infect academia, NGOs, the fields of psychology and human rights advocacy, and even the very groups most affected by this narrative and its medical procedures, the Dalits (those born into India’s most marginalised castes). While Dalits have faced enormous violence and oppression on the subcontinent for thousands of years, Sundar notes that it is precisey this groups which has become the target for “gender identity” in the transitioning of India’s most oppressed who view “queerness” and “transgender identity” as an escape route from historical economical, political and social oppression. Where “transgender” ideology has taken hold of the more socially affluent in the west, Sundar notes that in India many Dalit women captured by the “gender identity” myth view this narrative as a panacea, an escape from the brutal reality of being female and impoverished in India today. Along with talking all things middle grade, writing nuanced characters, portraying trauma in a second world fantasy, and so much more, we also talk about Vaishnavi's own writing journey.
