Sruthi Lanka is clearly not the only CFO who began her professional career at blue chip investment house Goldman Sachs. However, she may be one of the only CFOs—if not the only one—who can trace her career roots to Goldman's technology engineering team. Back in 2009, as the economic downturn dispatched a daily dose of bad news, Lanka was tasked with separating Goldman's nervous bankers from their long-tenured messaging device of choice:  the BlackBerry.   “Most banks would not even entertain the idea of switching because the BlackBerry was so locked down and considered to be ironclad,” explains Lanka, who notes that while Apple's iPhone had become a popular alternative to the BlackBerry inside a number of different industries, bankers were known for clutching their BlackBerrys—and Goldman was no exception. According to her, “We found that most Goldman employees were already living on the iPhone, but meanwhile they would still carry this clunky BlackBerry.” After 3 years with Goldman Sachs, Lanka found herself being led into another realm by the same curiosity that had once caused her to become an engineer and subsequently drawn her to all things tech. A typical self-question of the time was “How did bankers make the decisions that they made about about whether to invest or not invest?” “This was all lost on me as an engineer,” recalls Lanka, who would return to school for an MBA and subsequently open her next career chapter as an investment banker. With Royal Bank of Canada, Lanka advised clients during pivotal moments of their company's trajectory. She found investment banking to be empowering, as she was able to work with seasoned CEOs and CFOs, but at the same time it was frustrating for her. Lanka tells us that it was then when she realized that she wanted to build a company rather than just advise others about theirs. This experience led her to MoneyLion, where as head of strategic finance she leveraged both her finance acumen and tech engineering skills to build a data team to help to realize the early-stage start-up's data-driven vision—a combination of skills and collaborative approaches that she would once more rely upon after stepping into the CFO office at Public.com in 2020.      Says Lanka: “It's not about having all of the answers but about knowing the right questions to ask.” –Jack Sweeney

Two essential ceremonies are conducted in Brahmin Households in the South. These are followed as a More than as one sanctioned by Sruthi or even Smriti. More is a Group of practices followed by a specific group rather than as a matter of personal choice. These are followed in the South of India, in the States of Tamil Nadu,Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra. One is Samaradhanai and the other is Sumangali Prarathanai. Samaradhanai is conducted before or after an auspicious occasion like Ayush Homa, Upanayana, Pilgrimage , Marriage. This is conducted for any auspicious occasion. This is conducted either before or after the event . In Samaradhanai , Family Deity is worshiped at Home and people are fed. In Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya, this is called Dhadhiyaarathanai. In those case where people are not sure of their Family Deity, the Pooja is offered to Lord Subrahmanya, in the case of Iyers, and in the case of Sri Vaishnavas, Lord Balaji. The other ceremony is the Sumangali Prarthanai. This again is a custom practiced and it does not find a reference in the Sruthi or Smriti. This function is more of sentiments practiced in the Family. This has to be performed, as a thumb rule, following the practices of the ancestors .While it is not advisable to start this practice if it has not been practiced by the ancestors, it is equally essential note that the practice is not to be discontinued if it had been in vogue in the Family. This is a function meant for women, married with Husband being alive. This has to be performed once a year for one Gothra and more than once in year should not be conducted. Tuesdays and Saturdays are to be avoided. Fridays during the Waxing of the Moon is advisable. Wednesdays/Thursdays are also permissible. Ashtami,Navami Thithis are normally avoided. Panchami is preferable. In this function the Blessings of the departed Sumangalis, those whose deaths precede the death of their husbands are sought and those who died young before getting married. Generally, if the daughter is getting married, the event is done before the marriage. In the case of a son getting married, this is performed after the marriage, with the Daughter-in-law conducting it. 7 ladies and 2 young girls (preferably below the age of 10) are invited to participate in the function, partake the feast and receive thamboolam.   The total number of ladies should always be in Odd numbers. The maximum number of ladies allowed normally is 11. Minimum is 5 +2. Advisable that unmarried Girl is about Eight Years as it is believed that she represents the Devi.     The ladies who sit for the puja represent all the women of the family who are no more alive. The function is presided over by the elderly lady members of the family. Usually the kartha is a sumangali from the family. The gifts to the ladies vary among families and depend on the financial status of the kartha, very similar to the nandi sradham. The menu for the feast is also very similar. 9 yds saree in silk or cotton is be bought along with a Blouse piece. The preferable colours are red, yellow and green. Invite and procedure. Those to be invited, kumkum, haldi, oil, shikakai, vasanai podi  are to offered at thier Home a day earlier On the morning of the day, wash the 9 yds saree & a blouse piece with madi (shuddam)after bath & dry. The Person conducting the Sumangali Prarthana should not take an oil bath. Kalyana kolam/Rangoli in the entrance, and semman & tie “ mavilai” at Home. For the pudavai kalam – put a square kolam, (padi kolam), over that keep a palakai & put kolam on that. In front of that, put a kolam to keep the elai. On both sides of the Pudavai(Sareee) kalam put kolam for 2 elais , beside for elais facing North, East is preferred next Fold the dry saree so that the “ pallu” comes on the top. The corner of the same should face N. Fold the blouse & keep on that. The term Brahmacharya means, ‘going after Brahman' ,The Reality. This has two connotations in practice. One is engaging oneself in the pursuit of Reality. The other is the virtue of practicing celibacy. Let us study the Etymology of the word. The word brahmacharya stems from two Sanskrit roots: Brahma (ब्रह्म, shortened from Brahman), means “the one self-existent Spirit, the Absolute Reality, Universal Self, Personal God, the sacred knowledge”. charya (चर्य), which means “occupation with, engaging, proceeding , behaviour, conduct, to follow, going after”..This is often translated as activity, mode of behaviour, a “virtuous” way of life. So the word Brahmacharya literally means a lifestyle adopted to seek and understand Brahman – the Ultimate Reality. In historic literature of Hinduism, it means “devoting oneself to Brahman”. In modern literature, it is commonly translated to mean celibacy for those unmarried, and fidelity to one's partner when married. In ancient and medieval era Indian texts, the term brahmacharya is a concept with more complex meaning. Brahmacharya embodies in its meaning an overall lifestyle that helps the pursuit of sacred knowledge and spiritual liberation. It is a means, not an end, and usually includes cleanliness, ahimsa, simple living, studies, meditation, voluntary restraints on certain diet, intoxicants and behaviors (including sexual behavior)' So, one interpretation, which is basic, is that Brahmacharya means making efforts to Realize Brahman, The Reality. Brahman can be realized, according to scriptures, with the help of a Preceptor, Guru.. Though the Smritis  /Sruthi declare that Brahmacharya begins with Upanayana, at an early age with the Upanayana, which is recommended at ages between 5 , 7, and 9,people were aware that the quest for Brahman might arise in an individual at a later date, say at the age 25, 30, 40 or even 50. In such cases  by following of the enquiry into the nature of Brahman, one becomes a Brahmachari, a Student. He could be a married man or woman. Being married or unmarried , man or woman is no hindrance in pursuing the Reality Brahaman. We have many Grahasthas, married people as great Rishis, Vasishta,Krupar,Kashyapa, Agastya, Gargi , Maitreyi. Therefore these great souls, though married are students, Brahmacharis, as they pursued Brahama Gnana. Hence a Married man is also a Brahmachari in this sense. Brahmacharya indicates a Stage of life,  that of study. The four Asramas are Brahmacharya, Gruhastha, Vanaprastha and Sanyasa. These relate to the dispositions and the actions being contemplated upon by the individual, while Celibacy is a part of Sadhana marga which expedites spiritual journey. Coming to Celibacy, Celibacy is essential in preserving the Semen from falling to the ground or flowing down as this hinders the spiritual growth, It is called Urthvarethas, Meaning that the semen flows upwards through the Chakras in the body to reach the Sahasrara in the head, This Celibacy is called Naishtika Brahmacharrya.(not allowing the semen to flow down) Bhishma is a Naishtika Brahmachari. He is the only Naishtika Brahmachari, apart from Hanuman. This is  the reason, why Devavrataha, was  called Bhishma, one who does the Impossible. In the case of the Grahasthas, so long as their object of physical interaction is to produce progeny without Lust, they are also rated high in the scheme of things. King Janaka is one such. Therefore a married one can also be called a Brahmachari, provided he/ she is after the enquiry into the Nature of Brahman. Today, we will be discussing the importance of ocean conservation with conservationist, Sruthi Gurudev.  According to the National Ocean Service, our oceans cover 70% of the earth's surface and produce over half of the world's oxygen and absorb 50 times more carbon than our atmosphere.  As Sylvia Earle, an oceanographer so aptly put; “With every drop of water you drink, every breath you take, you're connected to the sea.  No matter where on Earth you live.  Most of the oxygen in the atmosphere is generated by the sea.”And right now, our oceans need our attention.  The oceans do so much for us and it is now time we return the favor.  Sylvia Earle also stated; “Many of us ask what can I as one person do, but history shows us that everything good and bad starts because somebody does something or does not do something.”  Sruthi Gurudev is doing something to help our oceans.  She is a passionate ocean conservationist.  While diving in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Sruthi recognized the coral was bleached which transformed her understanding of what was really happening to our oceans.  This dive inspired Sruthi to create an e-magazine called An Hour in the Deep, where she gives young conservationists a platform to tell a story while incorporating science about the threats our oceans face.  Sruthi has been recognized as a National Geographic Explorer for her work in ocean conservation.  She is also a youth council member of Reserva: The Youth Land Trust whose mission is to empower young people to make a difference for threatened species and habitats through story-telling, education, and conservation.During this podcast, Sruthi will share her origin story as to how she became a young conservationist and why our youth are critical to helping reshape the way we address conservation.  She will also address issues with overfishing, why marine protected areas are vital for ocean health, and what simple measures we can take to help conserve our oceans.

Every now and then you meet someone and immediately feel energized and inspired. In this conversation with Sruthi, you’ll hear how she leans into her strengths in the midst of unprecedented circumstances, and what she’s learned about marketing in a digital must environment.  What does Sruthi think it takes to be a B2B Difference Maker? Find out in this episode. Takeaways:   1.Field Marketing is More Than Just Events   Supporting Quote:  Sruthi: When people just equate field marketing with events, I'm like, “okay, well, you know, the field marker you're working with, maybe he didn’t do it justice,” because really you're running a digital campaign through and through. Even when we were meeting physically, even when we were meeting in person, we were like, we had to be the masters of the digital campaign. So for out of the box, we've done a ton of emails. Like how else are you really supposed to reach people these days? We do a lot of social. And so we have a great content team and we've really utilized like video and media. That's something that we've seen a lot of our followers, uh, prospects and customers interact really well with.   2. Lean Into What You Know   Supporting Quote: Sruthi: We decided let's just lean into what we could continue doing, and that was content and co-marketing. So I think in those moments of like, Doubt or uncertainty or challenging moments, like just lean into what you already know and you know, that you can do well because those things won't let you down. And once you kind of lay a foundation with that, then being able to go out and experiment.   3. Rely on Your Strengths   Supporting Quote:Sruthi: Lean into what your superpowers are. Everyone brings something different to the table, so don't be afraid, like. To look into yourself and be like, this is what I'm really good at. This is what I can bring to the table. And for me, like that thing was, I'm like a natural networker. I'm very friendly. And so in my personal life and my professional life, that's helped me a lot, like meet the right people and make the right connections.

At a school where I taught radio, in the mic booth, there was a photo of Studs Terkel hanging on the wall. Under it, someone wrote “Talk to Studs.” The picture was there to help with tracking. Narration will sound more conversational if you pretend you’re talking to Studs, the thinking went. After all, that’s the goal, right? To track like you’re just talking to someone. Hanging up a picture and talking to it may be a good (and slightly weird) first step toward tracking naturally, Sruthi Pinnemaneniof Reply Alltakes things a whole lot further because she’s driven to avoid sounding like she’s reading something written. She very much wants listeners to fall into a story because her voice sounds unaffected and genuine.  “(At Reply All) we try to track in a way that is closer to ‘I’m telling a story to somebody,'” she says. “When we’re tracking, we almost always have a producer or someone in the room where we’re trying to recreate that feeling of ‘I’m here and I’m feeling the excitement and joy that I know exists in this story.'” She says it’s not just a matter of talking to that person in the room. They help, too. They offer feedback, of course. But, they also play tape. Sruthi listens to a quote in her story then, right as it finishes, she narrates. “The tape always carries a certain kind of emotion,” she explained to me. “Either you’re surprised by what the person is saying or what the person is saying makes you laugh. And so you want the tracking, the line that you’re saying out of it, to carry that emotion.” What else does she do? Sruthi lays it out in this episode of HowSound.

It's the podcast that has everyone asking, "Who the eff is King Diamond?" In this episode, we'll hear from Sruthi about what went into creating the world's latest must-listen-to podcast. Then the panel will give their two-cents on the case and whether Sruthi is the one who finally stuck the landing. There's also a correction or two. The song says "Don't you forget about me," but we might have forgotten about them. Finally, you'll be repeating the Crime of the Week over and over again. Also...can't get enough wisdom and insight from the incarcerated? Here are some blogs written by inmates, for future inmates (...if you're not careful). On the Inside - Paul Modrowski's blog, edited by his mother, that started Reply All's four-episode profile of Paul and his case. Between the Bars - a blog platform for prisoners in the US without internet access, done through MIT. Live from Lockdown - a blog written by various inmates in the federal prison system, including highly influential gang-leaders and those held in solitary confinement. Ben's Prison Blog - written by Ben Gunn, imprisoned in Sudbury (HM Prison), Derbyshire, England, 2009–2012. Since his release, Ben has continued his blog. Lastly, for those looking for deeper meaning, here's King Diamond's song, "No Presents for Christmas." Additional music this episode provided by Uncanny Valleys. Support the show.

In the fall of 1902, twelve young men in suits regularly gathered for dinners in the basement of a government building in Washington, D.C. The men ate what they were served, even though they knew that their food was spiked with poison. The mastermind behind these experiments was Harvey Washington Wiley. Before you condemn him, though, you’d be surprised to know that you probably owe him a debt of gratitude. Incidentally, Wiley is the founding father of the Food and Drug Administration. Inside the Episode: The intention of these experiments was not to induce digestive discomfort for its own sake. Rather, they were part of an extensive study on how chemical preservatives in food — before regulations existed — could harm human beings over time. You might cringe at what was once used to keep food “fresh.” Producer Sruthi Pinnamaneni gave us a closer look inside the story. About diving deep into archival materials, she says, “I spent hours [at the Library of Congress], reading thousands of [Wiley’s] letters and squinting at his tiny journals.  It is when you know every curve and squiggle of a man’s handwriting that you feel as though you’re starting to get to know him!” One surprising fact that she discovered while researching the piece was that while Wiley’s experiments contributed so much to food regulation, today’s practices still leave something to be desired: “…The FDA doesn’t really test food additives anymore.  There are more than five thousand additives commonly found in processed food and most of them haven’t been tested on animals and almost none (except for dietary supplements) have been tested on humans.” Sruthi sent us some photographs of the Poison Squad, Wiley, and some (how shall I put this?) unconventional tools that were used during the experiments. Full serving of intrigue and radio in this piece. Bon appetit. The Poison Squad won Best Radio & Podcast Media at the Jackson Hole Science Media Awards in 2014.
