Today on the take on board podcast, I'm speaking with Karen Tisdell, about LinkedIn and what board directors need to know about using LinkedIn for networking and being visible to board searches. Many of you already know that I'm a fan of LinkedIn, today, you'll get to hear from somebody else about why it's important.Karen says: "I started using LinkedIn in 2005, I was an early adopter, using LinkedIn to headhunt for people and went on maternity leave was a bit bored, had an argument with my husband about returning to work. And so now just start writing LinkedIn profiles from home, and it has just grown and grown and grown. So I do also do quite a bit of LinkedIn training as well. But LinkedIn profile writing is my core thing. So I'm really thrilled to be giving lots of tips to your audience today."ResourcesKaren Tidell on LinkedInKarenTisdell.comYou might want to:Get early bird pricing (before Aug 10) for An introduction to cultural competency with Jillian West on Wednesday 17 August 2022 | 7.30 am - 9.00 amJoin the Take on Board Facebook communityJoin the Take on Board LinkedIn communityFollow along on TwitterWork with meJoin the Take on Board: Kickstarter group programJoin the Take on Board: Accelerator group programFind out more about meContact me Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. LinkedIn, networking and community An early adopter of LinkedIn, Karen Tisdell recognised the platform's potential when working as a recruiter. Foreseeing the importance of how business leaders are perceived online, Karen began her LinkedIn profile writing business. Now in her 12th year of business, Karen regularly facilitates LinkedIn training for some of the biggest companies in Australia. Her true love, however, is writing profiles for business owners. Located in Sydney, Karen asserts her family complains that her voice travels through walls and so given the challenge of time differences, she doesn't work or connect with people located outside the Asia-Pacific region. Links: www.karentisdell.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/karentisdell/ www.facebook.com/KarenTisdellLinkedIn www.twitter.com/karen_tisdell Interesting facts about Karen - she loves collaboration and runs a regular Friday LinkedIn Live session with Michelle J Raymond - a company page specialist. Karen loves LinkedIn personal profiles. They enjoy robust discussions on what LinkedIn strategies are best and 'compete' to add value to our audience. Check out the LinkedIn RoundUp with Raymond & Tisdell. Karen does not connect globally unless the person is also a LinkedIn trainer or LinkedIn expert. Pick your Pond We talk about the importance of 'picking your pond.' You want a pond that's kind of connected to another pond, maybe there's a little stream connecting them. And you want to pick a pond and know where the big fish are, the ones that go through multiple ponds. It's all about finding the right people. So pick your pond and and look at who's in the waterways near you and the other ponds and play in that. We talk about how generous Karen is in business, sharing tips and opportunities to fellow trainers. Karen says she love connecting with people who do the same thing as she does. She thinks about "who can I introduce this person to?" "How can we grow great together?" It's not about carving up the pie. It's about making your pie bigger. Questions Karen asks her clients In order to deliver an excellent service, there are a lot of questions asked including: what do you do? What's your process? What's your call to action? What do you want people to do when they hit your profile? What is your objective? We are more connected than our parents. We are far more connected than our grandparents. All the studies are saying that we know far more people. Yes. Fact: the average American meets 80,000 people in their lifetime. So, you know, LinkedIn is, it's really important. Because when you meet so many people, it's hard to stay front of mind. We each think that we're special and memorable. But to the other person, they're meeting so many other people as well! So having a LinkedIn profile, makes you stand out that much more and a winning LinkedIn profile, really good profile converts. To build trust, you need to be seen in three different places, Somebody hears you on a podcast, and then they see you on a stage and then they write something. Profile Writing Tips Does your profile align with your goals for being on LinkedIn? Does your background banner align with what you want to be known for. For example - on your background you've got a picture of a beach. That tells us you want to be on holiday! We love the beach, but on't have it in your background banner as that doesn't tell me anything about how you work with technology. So think about your goal and make sure that you're putting that that strategic goal, that strategic intent, sort of all through your profile. Creating a winning LinkedIn profile that projects the difference you deliver helps let others know about you. A stand-out profile also ensures collaborators see you as credible, and in being aware of your specialist knowledge and expertise, are more likely to refer business to you. If you want to be noticed, you have to know how to use LinkedIn as a personal branding tool. If you want to make money and funnel clients, you have to see LinkedIn as a database of people you can partner and grow with - of how reciprocity, authenticity and a willingness to help others will further your own professional goals." In the Business Conversation, LinkedIn trainer and profile writer Karen Tisdell and I discuss: •Creating a winning LinkedIn profile •Creating versus curating content - what to publish, why to publish. •Building relationships online An early-adopter of LinkedIn, Karen Tisdell recognised the platform's potential when working as a recruiter. A decade on, she has written thousands of profiles for C-level executives and is ranked as one of the top 10 independent LinkedIn trainers across Asia Pacific." Karen's consistent sharing of knowledge has seen her ranked one of the top independent LinkedIn Trainers across Asia Pacific (SMMI 2019 & 2018) winning the support of clients that include HPE, Telstra, Dicker Data and Getinge as well as numerous small and mid-sized companies. There was a number of common topics and activities that experts kept telling me were 'must do' strategies in many of the conversations we had over the first 20 episodes.Whether it was a LinkedIn trainer like Brynne Tilman, a profile expert such as Karen Tisdell or a marketer like Joe Apfelbaum or Tim Hyde. On more than one occasion they said the same thing. So I thought it was worthwhile to bundle all those together to make it easy for you to get the BEST of the first 20. With 20 episodes now completed we've certainly covered some ground. I've talked to some real social legends and learnt a bunch of new and valuable stuff. With thousands of downloads already I have to say thank you to the listers for the support and, please keep on interacting with us both on social and via email. It's great to hear and see how you are all applying the strategies we uncover here. This episode is a mini wrap up of those previous 19 Episodes and we provide some commentary around the main takeaways from those interviews. But don't worry, rather than have you listen to me talk endlessly, I've enlisted the help of, The COO Of, The Social Revolution, sometime business partner and good friend, Tino Ho. I'm delighted to have Tino join me to co-host this review. The main points we walk through today include. Automation – why are people so wound up about itConnection requests – why are LinkedIn ‘trainers' so wound up about them (And what really works to improve connection rates – it's probably not what you think).Video – “how to use” as part of social outreachProfile – Why are we still talking about this. And the network quality over quantity piece. I'm sure you'll enjoy this slightly different episode and please help us to let everyone who needs to know about this podcast to find it – by liking, sharing and rating us. We are referencing the work of Joe Apfelbaum, Karen Tisdell, Stuart Turner, Bill McCormick, Tim Hyde and Matt Barnett in this episode. Karen has been ranked one of the top LinkedIn trainers across APAC and has been included on many 'best of lists' over the years Karen is in high demand and highly successful. In this episode Karen takes us deep into the various parts of our profile that, whilst on the surface, might look to be unimportant, actually have a big impact on how we are perceived by others on the platform.
